Former Russian anti-doping chief
passes amidst Russian doping
scandal
According to a statement released
by a Rusada spokeswoman, the former
chief died from what is being called a
massive heart attack on Sunday, Feb.
14.
Nikita Kamayev retired just two
months ago as the acting chief of the
Russian Anti-Doping Agency or Rusada, after allegations of widespread,
state-sponsored cheating among pro
athletes surfaced.
Ramil Khabriev, the former general
director for the agency, told TASS Russian news agency that Kamayev, 52,
was complaining about chest pains
after cross-country skiing.
Rusada saw the organizations
leaders resign in 2015 after a report
produced by the World Anti-Doping
Agency revealed cheating and corruption on a national level along with
the cooperation of state officials. It
revealed cover-ups and the close
interaction between Russian government agencies and testing labs where
samples were destroyed.
Kamayevs death came just two
weeks after the death of Vyacheslav
Sinev, Rusadas general director from
2008 to 2010. The causes of his death
are still unknown.

Nevada courts to speed up
decision on education savings
account
Nevadas new school choice law is
expected to be under scrutiny by the
state Supreme Court by mid-April due
to a motion to accelerate decisionmaking.
State Treasurer Dan Schwartz
sought the action, which is set to
shave about three months off the
process. This comes after his office
appealed an injunction issued by Carson City District Judge James Wilson.
Wilson sided with a small group
of parents who argued that the
implementation of the Education
Savings Account Program could
hinder their childrens public school
education. Parents that apply to the
program would be able to use more
than $5,000 in funds to send kids to
private schools or other educational
institutions.
Schwartzs office is accepting applications for the ESA throughout the
appeal process up until March 31.
applications will not be processed,
however, until a decision is reached to
lift the injunction.

CAMPAIGN RAMP-UP
Hillary Clinton (center) addresses a crowd in the University of Nevada, Renos Center for Molecular Medicine while student Courtney McKimmey (left) and former state Sen.
Sheila Leslie (right) listen in during a town hall on Monday, Feb. 15. Clinton is locked in a dead heat in the polls with her opponent, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
All over Nevada, there are signs of presidential campaigns working to win over
voters before the fast approaching Nevada
caucuses. Some students at the University
of Nevada, Reno, have embraced the caucus craziness and are working to get their
peers politically engaged.
The Young Democrats is a club at UNR
that is not endorsing a specific candidate
but is focused on educating potential
voters. Even though the club was lacking
focused enthusiasm last year, it is resurfacing and reigniting with the imminent
2016 presidential election, according to
the organizations president, Kyle Sharp.
The past three or four years, weve
been trying to make it something, and
all of the people who took leadership
on it did nothing with it, and ... I decided I wanted to do something with
it, Sharp said.

LEGISLATION
Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders addresses a crowd during a campaign rally in front
of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2015. Sanders has gained a
good deal of momentum in the primaries after a closs loss in Iowa and big win in New
Hampshire.
FEB. 10
Campaign
On Monday, Clinton herself came to
UNRs campus with largely the same goal
as Richards. Talking to a closed audience of
over 100 female students and other community members, she focused solely on health
care and womens health. In that vein, she
was quick to attack Republican attempts to
repeal ObamaCare and note that Sanders
stance on health care, creating a singlepayer system, is much easier said than done.
I am dedicated to building on and improving the Affordable Care Act, Clinton
said. My esteemed opponent, we share the
same goal: universal health care coverage.
He wants to move to a single-payer system
which, I can tell you, will never pass the
United States Congress. That will never happen.
Its an overture to women at a time when
the Clinton campaign needs all the help
it can get. Women voters have been a cornerstone of the Clinton campaign since it
started last year, but most of those women
are older over 45. NPR noted that among
millennial women, Sanders leads Clinton by
nearly 20 points.
Despite all that, it hasnt worried Clinton
field organizer Tyler Hendricks, who remains
confident that the campaigns get-out-thevote efforts will prevail.
Were seeing a lot of enthusiasm with
students here, Hendricks said. I think that
there are some differences [with voters]
in other states, but [in Nevada] were positioned to do a lot better and were looking
forward to caucus day.
In the Sanders camp, the focus has been
rooted in pulling out a surprise victory.
At an event dubbed Real Solutions for
Real People, Sanders spoke to a packed
room in the Jot Travis Building about his
traditional stumping material campaign
finance, wealth inequality and the like but
also Nevada-specific issues. Addressing the
current debate over solar energy in Nevada,
Sanders reiterated a stance in favor of renewable energy.
Later that day, Sanders spoke to a larger
crowd of more than 500 campaign volunteers in order to energize their canvassing
efforts. Again, Sanders emphasized the element of surprise.
We surprised them in Iowa, Sanders
said. We surprised them in New Hampshire. We are going to surprise them here in
Nevada.

A bumblebee in Anne Leonards Fleischmann Agriculture lab lands on top of a lab-made flower to collect the pollen placed

For a creature that does all of its pollination work for free, scientists and
researchers are asking the public to
watch closely and help out. A consistent decline in bee populations could
mean more than just losing the honey

REVIEW
This coming March boasts the possibility of over 10 different virtual reality
headsets hitting the market, and some are
already available for preorder. Oculus Rift
is one that is set to launch next month.
Oculus, at the forefront of the VR
revolution, started three years ago as a
crowdfunded independent business that
raised over $2 million for the products
initial development. Since then, its
released two development kits, and now
consumer versions are available.
But heres the kicker: theyre really
expensive. Despite Oculus CEO Palmer
Luckys initial promise to keep it in the
$300-400 range, the Oculus Rift currently
costs a whopping $599. In comparison,
both a PlayStation 4 and an Xbox One
currently cost $399.
Not only that, but the hardware requirements needed to run the Rift on a PC are
pretty hefty too, if youre not already a
hardcore PC gamer. Youll need at least
8 gigabytes of RAM, and an NVIDIA GTX
970 graphics card, which currently retails
at a smooth $379.99 at Best Buy.
Thats not counting the other specifications Oculus recommends for the Rift
either. A Rift plus PC bundle runs at just
under $1,500. At this point, you could
have bought four PlaysStation 4 consoles,
Joey Lovato tries on the Oculus Rift in the Reynolds School of Journalism to view
his own work from last semesters class with Professor Howard Golbaum on Oct. 1,

So no, this isnt a cinematic masterpiece,
nor is it better than the original; however,
it is better than one of the many cash-in

for both fans of the original and people

With just six games remaining in the regular season, Nevada
basketball has positioned itself to contend for a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference. Thanks to a week in which
the Wolf Pack beat Air Force and Fresno State, Nevada is just one
game back of second-place New Mexico and half a game back of
third-place Boise State.
WOMENS GOLF
Competition is stiff when referring
to the Peg Barnard Invitational
in Stanford, California. While
this may have been a concern
to other teams, Nevada played
relaxed and with poise, placing
11th overall. The team was also
strong in its individual play, as five
Pack members placed above 60th
place. Celyn Khoo and Bertille
Dupont were the teams leaders
as Khoo tied for 29th, and Dupont
tied for 42nd.
SOFTBALL
This year the Kajikawa Classic
took place in Tempe, Arizona,
from Feb. 12 to 14. The Pack was
untouchable during its first day
of competition, with a 7-6 victory
over Bradley and a 5-3 victory
over Indiana. Momentum was on
Nevadas side going into day two,
but its early wins would eventually
go to the teams head, with Nevada
dropping both games in its second
day of action. The Pack would
eventually redeem itself, with a 2-1
victory over East Carolina, during
the final day in Tempe.
WOMENS BASKETBALL
The Packs woes continue, with
its most recent losses to Air Force
and Fresno State. Nevada dug
a deep hole for itself during the
second quarter against Air Force.
This hole would prove to be too
deep to get out of, and the team
would eventually lose a close one
in Colorado, 59-53. Nevada would
then travel to Fresno, California,
to take on the Bulldogs. Nyasha
Lesure would reach a career-high
800 points this game, which
would inevitably be overshadowed
by the Packs loss. Fresno State
went on to defeat Nevada by a
margin of nine points, despite
being down going into halftime.

that will get people talking. ESPNs
Keith Law finished ranking every MLB

Angels finished at No. 30. In case
you werent sure, thats out of 30

attention in Laws article was when
he said, If the Angels want longterm success, they should consider
trading Mike Trout. I understand
the need to reload your farm system

names can do that. That being said,
that is blasphemy! That is absolute
blasphemy! Mike Trout is the present

A Wolf Pack baseball player takes an at-bat during a game last season at Peccole Park. Nevada loses six of nine hitters in this seasons lineup and will look to pitching and defense to win games.

PROJECTION
Matching Nevadas record of 41 wins in
2015 is a tough mark to reach. The team
is built differently and is replacing a lot of
major league talent, but that doesnt mean
Nevada wont be successful. At every level
of baseball, the team with good pitching and
good defense usually wins in postseason
play. UCLA has won national championships
with that formula. The San Francisco Giants
have carved out a Dynasty with that formula.
It isnt the flashiest way to win ballgames,
but pitching and defense are what win
games that matter. Will Nevada win the
Mountain West? Probably not. San Diego
State enters the season as the favorite, but
Nevada may be better equipped to win big
games down the stretch with the new formula that Bruce has been introducing since
he arrived in Reno. Do not expect 41 wins
again, but dont expect a drop-off either.
The Pack will continue to be in the top tier
in the Mountain West.
