This Workshop Aims for

Participants:
 To understand how technology can be
appropriately integrated into face-to-face
(F2F) courses.
 To learn about specific examples and
technologies / web-based tools that may
be used in your class.
 To discuss ideas related to incorporating
technology into your own courses.

Our Topics
1. How a Hybrid (or Blended) Class Looks
& Works.
2. Open-Source Tools.
3. Connection between Technology and
Teaching Methodology.
4. Examples and Future Ideas.

How a Hybrid Course
Looks & Works
1. Types of
Technology
2. Structure
3. Organization
4. Time Management

1a. Types of Technology

 Internet (WWW)
 Mobile Phones
 Computer software
 Other
 Clickers
 Graphing calculators
 Smart boards
 Cameras

1b. Structure
 Must choose best
options (F2F or
technology) for each
area:
 Communication
 Learning Activities
 Presentation
 Practice
 Assessment

Ideas for Technology
To Increase Time

Pre-Class Preparation After-Class Discussion Additional Work

Readings, Initial Questions, or Followup / Contination Ideas that "don't fit"
or Assess Prior Knowledge of ideas / concepts yet you might want
presented in class to include / discuss

I will use an announcement on LMS to tell students what

to expect for each class (topics, materials needed, etc.)
as well as what to do to prepare for each class.

I use discussion boards to continue class discussions or

to followup to make sure that students “got” whatever the
major ideas were from the F2F class session. I also use
DBs for “extras” that may come up but I have no time for
during F2F class.

Workshop Exercise (1):
For one of your courses:
 Choose one area in the “structure” item
(communication, activities, presentation,
practice, assessment) and brainstorm at your
table about which parts are best for F2F and
which could incorporate technology.
 Discuss your group’s ideas and expect to
share a sentence or two about what you
discussed with the whole group.

Open-Source Tools
 Scribd: place to store
documents for people to
access without having to
send personal invitations.
 GoogleDocs: place to store
documents that is more
secure; requires invitations.

Workshop Exercise (2):

For one of your courses:
 Decide upon two specific areas / assignments
(e.g. HW #2, in-class activity #5, report #1,
etc.) that you think could be enhanced with
the use of technology and write some notes
about how you think this could be done.
 Exchange your notes with someone else, read
their ideas and make a brief comment upon it.
 Expect to share briefly with the whole group
about what you’ve decided.

Technology ⇔ Teaching
Methodology
 Appropriate use of technology in teaching and
learning is more than just reading stuff online!
 Must enhance student involvement and self-
sufficiency
 Technology can augment:
 Communication
 Discussion
 Presentation

Example 3

Workshop Exercise (3):

For one of your courses:
 Which area of your course needs
improvement in terms of student
involvement, initiative, and
responsibility?
 Discuss your thoughts with your table.
 Expect to share briefly with the whole
group about what you discovered.

Examples & Future Ideas

 Cell phones & SMS  Virtual classroom
 Reminders “space” (e.g. Moodle)
 Encouragement  Hybrid courses
 Information  Online demonstrations
 Online information / teaching & assessing
 Lecture notes with technology
 Syllabus / course  Smart phones & m-
info learning
 Links & resources

Workshop No.3
Aligned Teaching in Practice
 We shall look at designing programmes, courses
and assessment in ‘alignment’ with Friday’s
principles.
 Please bring with you for Tuesday a copy of the
syllabus (or the Module Description) for one of
your courses that you teach.
 Please note down what is its place in your degree
programme.
