Unison Scripture
iSAiAh 40:28-31 (niV)
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the
everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He
will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one
can fathom. 29He gives strength to the weary and increases
the power of the weak. 30Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall; 31but those who hope in
the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings
like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk
and not be faint.

Fasting For The Lenten Season

As we prepare for our churchwide Lenten season fast, keep in mind our 2016 Theme The Fruit of the
Spirit: Taste and See! Our reset cards for 2016 reflect the monthly Bible scriptures that support our
theme, focusing on a separate fruit each month. For the time of our fast, they will focus on Joy and
Peace. You are encouraged to use this resource as one of your sources of inspiration during our fasting
period and beyond. Fasting is a spiritual discipline designed to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ.
We do not fast to lose weight; we fast to be empowered by Jesus Christ. In 2016, as we seek to renew
our relationship with God, God will reveal Gods purpose and plan in your life if you dare fast, pray,
study and learn the power of quiet time. Jesus had to steal away from the crowd and spend time with
his Father in the mountains, to pray, study, reflect, meditate, and center his spirit. If fasting and prayer
were the disciplines of Jesus, should not this be followed by us? Join with us this season and witness a
breakthrough, as we fast, pray, study, reflect, meditate, and learn the power of quiet time.
Question: i have never fasted before?
Answer: Consult your doctor first!* Fasting is not
the removal of all food from your diet. Fasting is
learning to discipline your mind, body and spirit
to remove something you know hinders your
ability to function at your highest capacity, from
your life or diet.
Question: is fasting biblical?
Answer: Fasting is biblical. Throughout the Old
and New Testaments, fasting was used by the
people of God to prepare for a spiritual challenge,
hear Gods voice before making a major decision,
and for removing destructive forces in your life.
Fast #1 - Fasting to confront destructive forces
February 10 February 16
Eat all your meals before 6:00 p.m.
February 17 February 23
Eat only two meals, before 6:00 p.m.
February 24 March 1
Eat only one meal a day before 6:00 p.m.
March 2 March 8
Drink only juices, water, and/or tea
March 9 March 15
Eat only fruits and vegetables, before 6:00
p.m.
March 16 March 26
Slowly begin to add meat to your diet
Fast #2 The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book
of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the
Babylonians, he asked of the Babylonians if he,
along with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,

February 28, 2016

could fast eating only fruits and vegetables so they

would be prepared to confront the Babylonian
king.

February 10 February 16
Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.
February 17 February 23
Eat only two meals a day, before 6:00 p.m.
February 24 March 1
Eat only fruits and vegetables, before 6:00
p.m.
March 2 March 8
Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m.; meat
may be added.
March 9 March 15
Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m.; meat
may be added.
March 16 March 26
Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m.

Fast #3 - Removing certain foods or items from

your diet or life. One type of fasting is to remove
certain foods from your diet, such as fried foods,
sweets, sodas, or refined sugar and/or flour.
*Please seek the advice of your primary care provider/
doctor before beginning a fast that involves restricting
food/calories and/or medication. Your doctor can help
you design a fasting plan that protects your health
and well-being. This is extremely important if you are
pregnant or have a medical condition. Medical condition
examples include, but are not limited to those who have a
chronic disease such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, hypertension,
heart disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease,
recent surgery, etc.

our Chinese interns
For three weeks, Trinity UCC was blessed to have two university students from China, Xingyu Zhong
(Vanessa) and Wei Si (Fay), who served as interns in our Accounting and Ministry Services
Departments, respectively. Vanessa and Fay were introduced to Trinity UCC by our member,
Deacon Cathy Boganey, who volunteers as a host for Cultural Homestay International (CHI), a
non-profit organization that promotes international friendship and goodwill through educational
exchanges, by immersing young people from overseas into our North American culture, business,
and way of life.
Below, Fay, Melodee, and Deacon Cathy, share their thoughts about the past three weeks. Please
remember to keep Vanessa and Fay in your prayers.
Fay describes her experiences at Trinity as colorful it was her first time working with Black
people, and she felt the team members were very nice and helpful. She was treated to a cultural
and historical lesson by Adrian Williams of Ministry Services, as well as a soul food meal of chicken
wings, greens, and fried corn prepared by Deacon Cathys mom. Fay also shared that she regularly
talked to her parents via FaceTime and that she hoped to one day return to Chicago. Fay was able
to attend one of the worship services, and because the Chinese have no religion, it was definitely
an experience she will not forget. She felt that Trinity was truly a place where people can come
and find themselves, and a place where people get together to share love. She enjoyed the music
and the Mens Chorus.
Deacon Cathy Boganey, a member of Trinity UCC for over 30 years, was invited by a friend to
consider volunteering as a host with Cultural Homestay International. Cathy has since hosted 4
students from China. She shared that Vanessa and Fay were both self-sufficient and independent,
taking public transportation all across the Chicago area, even traveling to the north suburbs to
shop at the outlet mall! Cathys mom also got involved, by cooking soul food dishes the interns
had never eaten. Deacon Cathy stated that she does not mind learning about other cultures
and sharing her own culture with others. As she thought about who she could connect the two
students with in order for them to gain knowledge about the African/Black tradition, she thought
about her church home and contacted the Human Resources department.
Melodee Wricks, HR team member, shared that she learned from Vanessa and Fay that it is o.k.
to live outside the box and step out on faith. She was encouraged by their tenacity and felt it
was time she mirrored their I can do ALL things attitude. Melody also felt that Trinity should
consider an exchange program, as well as host students from across the globe.
