A perfect manager is a boon for any company. A good manager needs to have a
strong knowledge about the functioning of a company. There are few who are born
with natural skills where as there are some that needed to work their way towards
it.
2. Professional Skills:
 A good manager should have all the basic leadership skills. There are
various ways in which a person can handle different situations through
various leadership roles. A good leader should be able to guide his/her
teammates to be able to perform well. Leadership does not mean dominating
people.

 One of the most important skills of a good manager is the knowledge of


effective time management. A person who manages to plan the schedule and
divide time equally between tasks can be an asset for the organization.
 A good manager should also have a visionary sight for the benefits of the
company. He/she should plan the future steps for the growth of the
company.

 For a team to perform well, a good manager should be able to motivate the
team for their tasks. He/she should encourage talents. In case of people with
low performances, he/she should tackle the situation with professionalism to
reach a positive conclusion.

 Even in a crisis situation, a person with good managerial skills should be


able to perform well. He/she should be mentally tough to handle any kind of
situations.

 He/she should also be responsible enough to maintain a good office


atmosphere. A manager should be sensitive towards others in the workplace.
A happy atmosphere would only lead to more productivity for the company.

 High level written communication skills.

 High level analysis and interpretation skills.


 High standard computer software and hardware skills.

 High level research and practical problem solving skills.

 High level technical design and fabrication skills.

With these skills, a person can definitely strive to be a good manager and thus be
an asset for any organization! These are the basic professional skills, if any
manager don’t have these skills it mean he is not perfect for management post.

3. Interpersonal skills:

3.1. Leadership:

The process of successfully influencing the activities of a group towards


the achievement of a common goal. A leader has the ability to influence
others through qualities such as personal charisma, expertise, command
of language, and the creation of mutual respect. As well as requiring
strong Communication Skills and Personal Skills, leadership uses the
Background skills of mentoring, decision making, delegation and
motivating others.

3.2. Networking

The ability to actively seek, identify and create effective contacts with
others, and to maintain those contacts for mutual benefit. In addition to
strong Communication Skills and Personal Skills, Networking uses the
Background skills of network building and motivating others.

3.3. Teamwork

Involves working with others in a group towards a common goal. This


requires cooperating with others, being responsive to others' ideas, taking
a collaborative approach to learning, and taking a responsibility for
developing and achieving group goals. Teamwork uses the Background
skills of collaboration, mentoring, decision making and delegation.

I am working as a Human Resource Manager AT Ptcl office situted in lahore,


and the main duties that I performed are:

5) PAKISTAN TELECOMMUNICATION COMPANY LIMITED

Seven years into a new century, the telecom sector of world finds itself at
crossroads after changing itself almost beyond recognition over the last 25
years. Privatization and competition are the order of the day, with a majority of
countries having adopted these policies to advance their telecom sector. The results
have been impressive; the industry has grown at unprecedented pace. Although
there
has been a phenomenal growth in Pakistan, especially in the cellular mobile
communication and in the internet, yet the late density remains almost stagnant.
So far PTCL is the sole land line service provider of Pakistan. PTCL is the giant of
Pakistan telecommunication industry and enjoying the monopoly. This part of the
report contains a brief introduction of PTCL.

6) THE HUMAN RESOURCE DEPARTMENT

The Human Resource department of the company operates in an auxiliary,


advisory, or
facilitative relationship to other departments in the organization. Any staff unit,
whether
it be personnel or otherwise, exists to help the line effectively. It has been created
in the
first place to take advantage of specialized talent and knowledge.
The H.R department of the company generally performs the following roles:
 Policy Initiation and formulation
 Advice
 Service
 Control
The transformation from a legacy public sector organization into a responsive and
competitive enterprise in the deregulated era could not have been possible without
implementing a forward looking Human Capital development and management
strategy. One of the most important objectives of this new strategy was to optimize
the workforce which was implemented by offering the voluntary option of
separating from PTCL in exchange for financial compensation. Around 29,920
employees opted to pursue other career opportunities after accepting terms of
voluntary separation from PTCL. The VSS marked the single largest most
successful exercise in the history of Pakistan. In the highly challenging
marketplace, PTCL HR wing stepped forward to facilitate the emergence of new
Corporate Culture by becoming Equal opportunity employer, inducting fresh blood
from the market, improving the way PTCL runs and reducing the number of
employees having outdated skill set.

The Training & Development wing of the HR Department also organized a


comprehensive six months “Urgent Training Needs” program in technical and
managerial fields to enhance soft skills. An MoU was also signed with Etisalat
Academy to benefit from their experience in training programs. Healthy
improvements have been made in the area of Recruitment and Retention as the
whole recruitment process has been redefined to cope with the changing business
requirements. Detailed facilitation programs have been initiated for the orientation
of newly hired employees. PTCL employees have been provided excellent
international placement opportunities across various Etisalat International Business
Operations.

6.1. SERVICE:
The service responsibilities of the H.R. department are apparent when one
examines such things are as the employment, training, and benefits functions. The
tasks of recruiting, interviewing and testing job applicants are performed in the
H.R. Dept. Training programs are planned, Organized and often staffed through the
H.R. Dept. H.R. Dept must see that adequate instructional materials and facilities
are available.Once pension and insurance programs have been setup, all claims
must be through the H.R. Dept. The maintenance of adequate employee records is
a service function that permeates all functional specialties within the personnel
field.

6.2. Control:
The H.R. Dept carries out important control functions. It monitors the performance
of line department and other staff departments to ensure that they conform to
established personnel policy, procedures, and practices. The control function of the
personnel department is quite comparable to the activities of a quality control
group that measures product variables to ensure conformance to engineering
specifications or to the activities of the auditing staff that inspects accounting
records to ascertain conformance with prescribed standards.

6.3. Compensation Administration:


The work of designing and installing a job evaluation program is handled, for the
part, by the H.R. department with some consultation with line managers. The
decision to adopt a particular pay structure with pay grades and fixed minimums
and maximums for the grades is a top management responsibility.
The day-to-day work of analyzing jobs, evaluating their worth according to a
formal job evaluation plan, and maintaining suitable records is are H.R. dept.
functions Periodic wage are conducted by the H.R. dept, but any firm decision to
rise or change the entire schedule is particularly always reserved for the chief
executive officer of the organization.

Following three types of compensation packages are being served to PTCL staff.
 N.B.P.S (National Basic Pay Scale)
 N.C.P.G (New Compensation Pay Grades)
 N.T.C (New Terms and Conditions).

7) Structure of organization:

The head of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited is called “President”.


Then come the SEVPs (Senior Executive Vice Presidents), i.e. SEVP (Finance),
SEVP (Operations), SEVP (Technical), and SEVP (Human Resource
Management), SEVP (Marketing & Business Development). Then there is a chain
of Executive Vice Presidents (EVPs) like EVP (Finance Central), EVP
(Marketing), EVP (HR Central), EVP (Accounts), EVP (Operation), EVP
(Information Technology, Training & Research), and EVP (Revenue).

All these are appointed at Pakistan Telecommunication Company, Headquarters at


G-8/4, Islamabad. Apart from these EVP, there are also EVP (Operation), EVP
(HR) etc who are heading the other regions of PTCL in major cities country wide.
Then there are Chief Engineers and General Managers at H/Qs who report to their
relevant EVP. Then there are Senior Managers, Deputy Directors, Assistant
Directors, Account Officers, Assistant Account Officers, Financial Analysts,
Marketing Managers, Computer Programmers, and IT Specialists etc.
There are also Regional Heads (General Managers) to head PTCL Regions then
come the Senior Managers (Operations), Senior Engineers (Operations), Engineers
to look after the telecom system of Regions. There are also Senior Managers
Finance, Account Officers and Accountants to Handle Regional account and
billing matters. Manager HR & his staff are responsible to take care of Personnel
affairs at Regional Level. In non-gazetted staff there are Engineering Supervisors
Operations /Switching /Power plant /Optical Fiber system/M.W Media, Account
Assistants, Stenographers, Assistants, Key Punch Operators, Telecom Technicians,
Upper Division Clerks, Lower Division Clerks, Line Men, Wire Men, Drivers,
Exchange Cleaners, Naib Qasids and Peons etc.

All the staff is recruited by the HR Department headed by SEVP HR. The HR
experts are responsible for hiring & to further streamline its recruitment process.

8) Managment style:

The choice of management style or its effectiveness varies from one organization
to the next and within different sections of the organization. The effectiveness
depends on certain major factors. They are as follows:
 Nature and complexity of tasks and its interdependence.
 The nature of employees in terms of their skill, abilities, personal
characteristics, motivational factors, communication skills.
 The nature of organizational culture.
 The size of the organization.
 The nature of the external environment in terms of its dynamism and its
predictability.
 The nature of social, economic, political, legal, cultural, ethical as well as
environmental factors.

9) Objectives of PTCL:

To be the leading Information and Communication Technology Service Provider in


the region by achieving customer satisfaction and maximizing shareholders' value'.
The future is unfolding around us. In times to come, we will be the link that allows
global communication. We are striving towards mobilizing the world for the
future. By becoming partners in innovation, we are ready to shape a future that
offers telecom services that bring us closer.

4. Sometimes I am unable to hanlde so many tasks which I disperse among
others.
5. I Like perfcetion, i want to see everything perfect, which take my too much
time and concentration.
6. Sometimes incapable to cope up with the activities like Cashflow, start-up
cash-drain.

11) Learning Styles:

Initially i would like to complete my studies with higher grades. Because grades

along with experience, skills and confidence are also very important. As some

companies preferred grades and others confidence and skills.

I want to learn and grasp on all the basic skills which are very important for

Human Resources Management and different market strategies and prescriptive

lesson plans,develop detailed lesson plans, create tactical unit plans, and

implement approaches that design a

variety of learning experiences, allowing for the greatest opportunity for learning

to take place.

To be successful and satisfied person in my life, I make many palns.


I believe that with the classes, information and knowledge I have learned in this
course and all of my classes at LONDON COLLEGE that I will be a successful
manager in whatever I may choose to do and my studies will assist me to be a
successful person.
My short term and long term Goals are:

1. I want to make practice of Initative, because they are the first step towards

success.

2. I want to improve my personal effectiveness.

3. I also want to improve my Human relation handling skills. These are the

basic skills without knowing them we cant get success in any field.

4. As Leadership skills are very important. A professionals personality is not

complete if this skill is missing.so i want to clasp on this skill.

5. The hierarchy is an integral part of the corporate world. It goes without

saying that a person should be comfortable working in any part of the

hierarchy. I want to be capable enough to know the workings of all the parts
of the hierarchy so that i can have cordial work relations with the entire

hierarchy of a company.

6. I want to learn Professional knowledge of Hr, because it is very important

for having a good and safe future in this field.

7. I want to develop a habit of Continuning learning in me .

8. An increase in responsibilities generally means that the job profile and the

position of a person are increasing in the company. So, I will not only

 Manager of Managers/CEO:
Without any doubt, my top most long term goal is to achieve one day the
highest position in the company, so as to complete the full circle of the
professional life.

I am adequately preparing myself to face the forthcoming challenges of
deregulated environment. Appropriate structural changes have either been
initiated or these are underway. To face the challenge, I want to learn new
Marketing and Business Developing stratgies.

 New Technology:
Prior to the start of the competition, I want to learn new technologies,
billing, marketing & customer care infrastructure, skilled trained
professionals skills with focus to win business and earn customers and
employees loyalty.

 To be Good at Personal Life:

i believe the best manager one can be is to be good at managing their own life
before they can manage other's. It seems to me that if you can't manage your own
life how can one possibly manage others in a way that will not only benefit their
employees but keep each and every employees best interests in mind at all
times.So my long term goal is to be successful in my personal and professional
life.
 To accept changes:

My long term goal is to always accept change and to adapt with an ever changing
society. I have seen throughout my life that one of the best skills to have is to adapt
with change. I feel that one needs to be able to adapt to changes in order to be a
good manager. If a person is not open to new ideas, ways of thinking, habits,
routines, etc. than not only is it difficult for the employees to work but it also is
difficult to keep one's clientele. So will polish my these skill for becoming a good
manager.

faster should be more effective, efficient, and flexible. Helping individuals and
teams learn together should, therefore, enhance an organization's ability to
compete.

I want to get command on An appreciation, knowledge, and comprehension of
understanding and catering to unique learning styles because these skills are the
keys of achieving efficient learning process and success.

14) Current Status:

Now I am doing Advance Professional Diploma in Management Studies leading to

Masters of Business Administration (MBA), and it will complete in 2011.

In 2011, I will b HR Manager.

In next 4 years, I will be CEO of respected organization. Or may be I start me own


Business.

14. Personal Development Plan (PDP):

 I have to develop human resource planning, polices and procedure skills and

want to make good practice so that it facilitate me in my future.

 I have to develop the skills like recruitment, training needs, industrial

relations, selection of strong and benefited project plans, employee

development and employee relations because without commanding on these

skills i cant progress in my field.


 I have to develop problem solving approach, stress tolerance, planning and

evaluation, flexibility, mathematically reasoning and attention to details.

 I have proactively contributes to the change management, people

management, team development, new technologies health and safety

management, as management is like backbone of any organization, so

handling management in an organized way is very important and basic skill.

 I have to develop the skill of staff amenities. Because staff facilities and

satisfaction is very important for getting outstanding results.

 I have to get approaches to the improvements of process capability.

 for bringing a performance oriented, strategic view of HR management to the


top of the organization I have to come up through HR specialties, and have
demonstrated that I understand broader business and strategic realities, not
