Education is a dynamic process which brings the changes in the behavior of the pupil and
develops him intellectually, socially, culturally and spiritually in such a way by allowing
reasonable independence keeping in view consciously or unconsciously the personal
interest, attitudes, capabilities, abilities, social ideals and needs of the pupil so that both
the individual and the society may touch the peaks of the progress.
At the present time, the aim of education is to give the students the knowledge of the
world in which they live and to train them to acquire some technical skill by which they
can earn a livelihood. Thats why there is too much craze for vocational education among
students. The students of arts, science, and commerce at the graduation level are highly
interested for vocational education because in the present age of competition, only

bookish knowledge is not sufficient for making own existence, so generally most of the
students like to join vocational education to be self depended economically and to spend a
luxurious life. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Interest is a state of motivation or set
that guides behavior in a certain direction or goal. An individual has different types of
interest towards various subjects, persons, objects, activities, trades etc. Someone wants to
be an administrative officer, someone wants to be a doctor, someone wants to be a lawyer
or a teacher or an engineer or a business man or an entrepreneur. Researches reveal that if
one is interested in some particular job and has a positive attitude towards it, he can do
that job more quickly, effectively, successfully than another person having less interest
and negative attitude towards the same. It is essential to know the ones attitude and
interest so that right person for right job may be matched. In the same way, in education, if
the students are interested in subject and have a positive attitude towards the same, they
will feel satisfaction, pleasure in the subject and will perform better. Thats why the

ASSIGNMENT-2
TOPIC- A study of occupational vocational interest of senior secondary level
students in rural and urban area.
Vocational interest is defined as ones own pattern of preferences, aptitudes, like
dislikes, preferred in any manner, wisely or unwisely by self or by another source for a
given vocational area or vocation. Therefore, the purpose of the present record is to
help students to adjust themselves to the careers, jobs and vocations, by making wise
choices. Only by making right choice the student will be able to utilize his all the
potential to the maximum extent. The choice of vocation is one of the very important
decisions a person must make for himself and this choice is a long process rather than a
simple incident. Vocational interest and choices do not appear all of a sudden during
adolescence. They appear as a result of developmental process. Vocational interest is
not as a single choice but as the sum total of many interests that bear in any way upon
an occupational career (Strong 1954). 1.2 JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROBLEM In
todays world of internet and satellite the options available to any person are far more
than what were decades ago. Many of the parents and students themselves are not
aware of their values. Hence they feel confused and end up choosing wrong vocation.
The life of youth has become very complex with the advancement in science and
technology. At times, they are distracted because they are unable to cope with and
suffer from deteriorated interests in studies, complexes, feeling of insecurity,
maladjustment, alienation. Deterioration of values among students has also been
observed. This has further affected the academic achievement of students. As there is
so much of competition in society, so student have started paying attention to
academics and owing to guidance services they are also becoming aware of their
interests and aptitudes but at the same time, they are losing their values. Youth of today
is disoriented and distracted by materialism. There have been many research studies
conducted on youth by eminent scholars in the field of psychology, sociology,
education, etc. The present study will be useful for parents and teachers to understand

the youth, their interests and values which can prove to be very useful for society and
building it towards a better tomorrow. Earlier the students had no interest in selecting
their vocations as the students preferred going in the vocation, their parents wished
them to go in. But this trend has been changed and now students wish to select their
own.
The findings of study are likely to prove of immense importance to educational
thinkers, teachers, psychologists, parents and others who are concerned with the sphere
of education. The teacher educators, teachers and parents should provide guidance for
students and children on the basis of their interests, potential and try to develop them to
maximum. One of the important implications of the present conclusion for parents,
teachers and teacher educator is that the curricula, syllabi, text books etc. should be
modeled in such a fashion that they can utilize their energies in the right direction.
Proper vocational guidance can be provided to the students on the basis of their interest
for a particular vocation. This will increase their efficiency. The most important factor
that helps in high academic achievement is need for achievement or the extent of
motivation. It is therefore, most important for teachers as well as parents that they
should infuse the spirit of motivation according to their interest. So that they can
achieve high in the academic field.
SuggestionsStudy can be conducted on a larger sample in order to get better understanding of the
relationship of the variables of vocational interest and values secondary students. The
present study may be repeated by involving more senior secondary students from other
states. The study can be conducted on other variables to see their relationship with
vocational interest.

The study can be conducted on other variables also like

personality, study habits, educational interests, etc.
