WASHINGTON - The Atlantic coast has been removed from a plan that would have opened the ocean
floor to oil exploration and drilling, a move that environmental groups and New Jersey elected officials
said would have imperiled the Shore economy.
U.S. Sens. Cory Booker and Robert Menendez, U.S.
Rep. Frank Pallone and various New Jersey organizations announced Tuesday that federal officials heeded
their protests and removed the Atlantic coast from
the leasing program.
The federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management
was considering oil and gas exploration off the coasts
of Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina. The Atlantics inclusion in the Outer Continental
Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program worried groups
throughout New Jersey.
If another disaster like the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon explosion happened in the Atlantic, they said,

hand in the Republican race with wins in Florida,
North Carolina and Illinois but fell in Ohio to that
states governor, John Kasich.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, meanwhile, ended his
campaign after his devastating home-state loss.

DELEGATE RESULTS

OLD BRIDGE - Two men, one of them a Howell resident, and a Freehold woman died following a two-vehicle crash on Route 9 near Route 516 Tuesday that
shut down highway traffic for hours.
Two other women were hospitalized. Authorities
said the cause of the accident is under investigation.
Police Capt. Steve Daroci said the 45-year-old Howell man, driving a green Ford Escape, was traveling
south on Route 9 around 12:23 p.m. when his vehicle
crossed over into the northbound lanes. The reason
why is not known, Daroci said.
The Ford collided with a Honda Accord heading
north. Daroci said the Howell man died in the crash.
