If cloud computing is so great,

why isnt everyone doing it?

Companies are still afraid to use clouds

The cloud acts as a big black box, nothing inside the

cloud is visible to the clients
Clients have no idea or control over what happens
inside a cloud
Even if the cloud provider is honest, it can have
malicious system admins who can tamper with the
VMs and violate confidentiality and integrity
Clouds are still subject to traditional data
confidentiality, integrity, availability, and privacy
issues, plus some additional attacks
15

Cloud Advantages
Reduce spending on technology infrastructure. Maintain easy access to
information with minimal upfront spending. Pay as you go based on demand.
Globalize your workforce on the cheap. People worldwide can access the cloud,
provided they have an Internet connection.
Streamline processes. Get more work done in less time with less people.
Reduce capital costs. Theres no need to spend big money on hardware, software
or licensing fees.
Improve accessibility. You have access anytime, anywhere, making your life so
much easier!
Minimize licensing new software. Stretch and grow without the need to buy
expensive software licenses or programs.
Improve flexibility. You can change direction without serious financial issues at
stake.

Article What every CEO should Know about

Cloud
Background & Objective

The Cloud

In 2010 an IBM survey of more

than 1,500 CEOs
worldwide revealed a troubling gap: Close to 80% of CEOs
believed their environment would grow much more
complex in the coming years, but fewer than half thought
their companies were well equipped to deal with this shift.
The survey team called it the largest leadership challenge
identified in eight years of research.
Cloud computing is one of the most talked about
information technology topics these days.
And, we illustrate what every CEO needs to know about
cloud...

The Cloud is not a trend or a fad. Nor is it simply Silicon Valleys

flavour of the month. It has become, in fact, a fundamental part
of the engineering that drives the world. Our entertainment,
our social networks or our communication systems would
simply not work without Cloud technology. Unfortunately the
strategic importance of the Cloud today also means that it is no
longer a subject purely for your technology teams. Whether it
be transforming how you engage your customers, how your
teams work or how quickly you can bring to market new
services - the Cloud is a business revolution that no CEO can
ignore.

A Spatial View of Cloud Computing

For CEOs,The main theme of the future? The

cloud...
Information will no longer be consumed while sitting at a
computer and desktops will be only for serious work
Companies need to develop mobile platforms to be competitive
Mobile phones and devices will become increasingly sophisticated
and workers will be productive from anywhere
Data and software will be run and stored using the cloud
The cloud will become simpler and companies that run on thick
clouds, like Facebook, will need some serious restructuring to
adapt to the new marketplace

Cloud computing model (adapted from Craig-Wood)

12/30/2015

Why CEOs should adopt cloud technology for

their businesses:
Switching to the cloud could save you thousands even
millions of dollars a year: companies can downsize in-house
IT staff in favor of cloud-based email systems, web hosting, and
file servers
Disintermediation of complex software infrastructures: instead
of implementing and maintaining complicated and expensive
software systems, software-as-a-service applications are less
expensive and easier to implement and maintain, and also
allow employees to access important information from
anywhere
Increase company agility: You change software quickly and
easily, unlike expensive enterprise systems
Enhanced data security and systems reliability: cloud vendors
will have more sophisticated security than your internal

systems to shield you from cyberattacks

5 Things Every CEO needs to know

about cloud technology

Cloud Deployment
Cloud computing technology does not require the use of
public networks. If your data is too strategically critical and
sensitive to be deployed on the Internet, you could instead
deploy a private cloud that is strictly for your organization.
A Private Cloud is more expensive and it needs trained staff.
Private cloud lets an organization benefit from cloud
technology without the risk of possible public disclosure of
its data.
Another alternative could be a community clouda private
cloud that is shared by several organizations for specific
needs. For example, a group of hospitals might create a
community cloud to hold patients medical records.

1.Re-Imagine Work
As part of your evaluation of the Cloud, take a closer look at the
the tools people use to work. Ask more questions. How might
the planned Cloud migration support a new culture of
collaboration? Is there a better way for your people to share
great ideas and innovative practices? How might your teams
identify other projects in the organisation relevant to them? Can
you make it easier for freelancers and partner organisations to
work inside your building? Creating an office of the future
requires more than just re-imagining your physical spaces. You
have to re-imagine work as well.

technology

2. Reboot IT
Behind the discussion of Cloud is a deeper debate about the
future of the IT profession. The next generation of IT leaders
already know they should be spending less resources on
installing servers, deploying patches and fixing computers - and
more time negotiating vendor relationships, managing
integrations and collaborating with line of business managers.
Technology is no longer a barrier to achieving those aims, but
organisational design and legacy IT management teams might
be.
Security in a Cloud environment is more complex and nuanced,
and there are constantly shifting consumer and regulatory
expectations of how a organization manages privacy.

3.Re-Invent Engagement:
In the past - innovating around the customer experience was
more complex. In the Cloud centric enterprise, Company can
start to think of data and services as modular components that
can be combined in intuitive ways. What kinds of mobile
applications might be deployed that was not possible to a few
years ago? An Organization can partner with other companies
and platforms and create compelling new services through
inter-connected Clouds?

technology
4.Re Write the Rules:
Here is the challenge - how might technology impact the plans
for re-writing the rules of the industry? Front office business
functions are not the only opportunity. Sometimes the most
interesting ideas come from when CEO makes services like
business analytics more available to front line people, or start to
integrate realtime information from back office functions. How
might it change the way it runs manufacturing, logistics, or
supply chain - and in doing so, disrupt product or service
offering to the market?

technology
5. Re Evalute your cost curves:
The final, and perhaps most important thing you need to know
about the Cloud is how it changes the way you think about costs.
In a traditional IT based organisation, costs are a step function.
Launching a new division, adding more people or planning a new
product or service will in the short term dramatically shift your
cost base to a new level, amortised with time over new revenue
growth.
The Cloud offers leaders a very different calculus. Even the
smallest of companies or startups can access world class
applications, storage or computation services on a per user basis,
12/30/2015
allowing them to ramp up very quickly as demand increases.

12/30/2015

Cloud Concerns

Last but not the least...

In survey after survey, security is listed as the top concern of

Cloud Computing.
Cloud Security Alliance (CSA), the industry group that
provides security guidelines and education, states that
security controls for the cloud computing are, in most part,
no different than the security controls in any IT
environment, [however] cloud computing may present
different risks to an organization than traditional IT solutions

Delegating the move to the

cloud to traditional IT people is
like putting the crew running the
boiler and steam turbine in
charge of electrifying a factory.
