Disk Preparation for ASM

Go to the Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc) snap-in.

Shrink the existing Volume to reclaim space for new drives.

For ASM usage, this has to be done on the Basic disk, not Dynamic one.

Create a new partition. This can be primary partition or extended partitions.

On the un-allocated space of a new partition, create a new volume from “New Simple Volume”.

Do not assign a drive letter.

Again, do not format the volume.

I created three volumes – one 1G for clusterware files (planned for external redundancy), two
20GBs for two diskgroups. Note that the required space for clusterware files is just 520MB. If
you plan for High or Normal redundancy, you can create more volumes of the same size.
