Both types produce distilled water for injectable use which meets the latest requirements of the
internationalpharmacopeiasincludingUSP,EPandJP.

OperatingPrinciples

VapourCompressionStillsfollowasimpleoperation:
Preheated feed water is evaporated in a vertical shell and
tubeheatexchanger(tubeside)(8)
Thesteamflowsintotheseparationchamber(13)wherethe
decontaminationoccurs(dropletandconsequentlyendotoxin
reduction) The resultant pure, dry steam is drawn off by the
compressor(7)andreturnedunderslightpressuretotheshell
sideofthemainheatexchanger.
This pressurized steam condenses in the exchanger,
transferringitslatentheattotheincomingflowoffeedwater
being evaporate. This substantially recovers the energy
providedbythecompressor.
The condensed WFI is sent to a hydrostatic column (9) for
degassingbeforefinallybeingpressurizedbyasanitarypump
(10). Depending on the output temperature required, the
sensible heat in this WFI can be recovered via a sanitary
feedwaterpreheater(2)
Feedwaterisfurtherpreheatedwithinheatexchangers(3)&
(4)torecoverasmuchheataspossiblefromtheconcentrate
andnoncondensablegasses.
Supplementaryheatingisneededparticularlyatcoldstartup.
Thisisprovidedbyeitherbyelectricalelement(6),steamcoil
(5)orplateheatexchanger.

Therearethreeclassesofcompressortechnology:
LowSpeed:volumetriclobetypecompressor,beltdrivenwithstandard
bearings operating at below 1000 rpm. This is the most efficient
technology.
Medium Speed: centrifugal compressors with belt transmission and
standardbearings,operatingaround2000rpm.
HighSpeed:turboorcentrifugalcompressorsoperatingat4000rpmor
abovewithspecialhighspeedbearings,pressurisedlubricationsystems
andlubricantcooling.Bearingsetupandrotorbalancingiscritical.
Stilmas offer as standard medium speed compressors, with low speed
options.
