WELCOME

MGEI
Dear Colleagues,
The Indonesian Society of economic Geologists (Masyarakat Geologi Ekonomi
Indonesia/MGEI) as a commission of the Indonesian Association of Geologists (IAGI) has
introduced a series of seminar on economic geology of the Indonesian islands which
has attracted economic geologists, other experts and contractor/mining companies
interest and open to the public. It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in MGEI-IAGI
Annual Convention 2013. This event will mainly focused on three (3) stages comprising
pre-convention workshop (gold, copper and laterite deposit), the main convention of
seminar on the mineral, coal and nickel resources in Papua and Maluku Islands (PMR), as
well as post-convention field trips.
This 2013 annual convention of the Indonesian Society of Economic Geologists will be
held in Kuta - Bali on 30th November to 3rd December 2013, with a fresh and exciting
program planned, the PMR 2013 seminar will feature an impressive line-up of high quality
keynote and guest speakers and seminar topics to enlighten to all delegates.

PAPUA & MALUKU RESOURCES 2013

IAGI
Dear all Indonesian Economic Geology members, delegates and participants,
It is my honor for me to welcome you all to this important event of gathering for
Economic Geology community of Indonesia. Welcome to Bali, the famous tourism place
of Indonesia. I believe you will enjoy the hospitalization provided by the committee.
The main theme of the 2013 annual convention of the Indonesian Society of Economic
Geologists (Masyarakat Geologi Ekonomi Indonesia/ MGEI), is Papua and Maluku
Resources, should be appreciated as this area still has potential hinder by the lack of
geological knowledge. This discussion seminar hopefully will uncover the unknown
geology of the hinder potential of mineral, coal, nickel and also gold and laterite deposit
on the Pre-Convention Workshop, the Seminar and also Post Convention Field Trip, a
perfect three activities to gain information.
As a chairman of the Indonesian Geological Association (IAGI), I always support MGEI
program specially the successful certifications for Competent Person and KCMI
(Indonesian Mineral Resources Code). These projects have been long developed by
MGEI/IAGI and PERHAPI and and showing the result also enlightens the Indonesian Stock
Exchange to discuss on the draft revision of the special regulation on initial public offering
(IPO) for mining sector. This achievement has been highly appreciated by IAGI and the
members.
So, by the time we will conclude this 2 days convention Seminar event, each of the
participants and delegates received an enlightenment with a new knowledge, and also
dont forget make these two days with a refreshment moment to enjoy the tourism place
of Bali Island.
Enjoy the meeting, thank you

MGEI IAGI ANNUAL CONVENTION, BALI 30 Nov 3 Des 2013

PAPUA & MALUKU RESOURCES 2013

BACKGROUND
Mineral exploration and mining along Papuan Belt and Maluku Islands have been
reported since the colonialism era and continued until the modern exploration and
mining techniques applied in recent time. The mineral commodities explored for and
mined up comprising gold, copper, silver, base metals (Pb, Zn), manganese, nickel, and
other various metals as well as coal.
Documentation of the exploration and mining aspects of this region, and sharing
knowledge among the exploration geologists, mining players, government agencies,
university staff, and other stakeholders are essential in order to optimize the utilization of
mining resources for the benefit of the nation.
The Indonesian Society of Economic Geologists (Masyarakat Geologi Ekonomi Indonesia/
MGEI), in affiliation with the Indonesian Association of Geologists (IAGI) will organize the
seminar on the Papua and Maluku Resources (PMR 2013), also to implement its vision
and mission, i.e. committed to (1) fostering professionalism of Indonesian economic
geologists, (2) actively playing a role in improving the quality of economic geology
education, and (3) promoting best mining practices in Indonesia.
This kind of seminar series was raised through a serial discussions and correspondences
among MGEI members. It now becomes a routine seminar and a trade mark for MGEI as
the Annual Convention. The PMR 2013 seminar is the fifth Indonesian mineral seminar
series after the Sumatra Metallogeny seminar held in January 2009, Kalimantan Coal and
the Mineral Resources (KCMR) that was successfully conducted in March 2010, in
Balikpapan; Sulawesi Mineral Resources (SMR) that was also very attractively carried out
in November 2011, in Manado; and Banda and Eastern Sunda Arc Seminar that was also
successfully conducted on November 2012, in Malang East Java.

ABSTRACT

Research area is administratively located in Erstberg District - Tembagapura, Mimika

Regency, Papua Province and geographically, located in coordinate 736600 E 738200 E and
9548500 N 9549300 N. This study uses core data from nine wells, those are TEW03-28, TE03-25,
TE05-15, TE07-13, TE07-14, TE09-08, TE16-03, DMLZ05-05, and DMLZC07-01. Macroscopic
observation along with microscopic analysis such as petrography analysis, clay mineral analysis
using NIR, mineragraphic analysis, and also assay geochemical analysis were made on each core
samples to determine the zonation of alteration and with mineralization.
Based on these analyzes, showed that the study area is composed of three rock units,
from old to young, namely: Limestone-Shale Unit, Dolomitic Limestone Unit, and Diorite Intrusion
Unit. In the study area, there are eight alteration zones. Those are (1) Dolomite-Calcite-Pyrite
Zone, (2) Diopsid-Forsterite-Muscovite Zone, (3) Biotite-Feldspar-Quartz Zone, (4) Garnet-BiotiteDiopsid-Magnetite Zone, (5) Magnetite-Anhydrite Zone, (6) Tremolit-Actinolite-Talc-Anhydrite
Zone, (7) Sericite-Calcite-Quartz Zone, and (8) Anhydrite-Sericite Zone. Mineralization processes
that occur in the study area includes two types, porphyry skarn and supergene enrichment. The
mineralization process formed three zones, namely: Pyrite-Chalcopyrite-Pyrrhotite Zone,
Chalcopyrite-Bornit-Magnetite Zone, Bornite-Covellite-Digenit Zone.
The age of rocks in the study area is estimated Late Cretaceous-Paleocene from
calcareous sedimentary rocks of the Limestone-Shale and Dolomitic Limestone Unit, then intruded
by monzodiorit of Diorite Intrusion Unit, resulting the formation of Zone (1) by metamorphism
process as the early stage in skarn mineralization. Calc-silicate hydrothermal fluids which came
then, after the outer edge monzodiorit frozen, entered through cracks that formed by Ertzberg
Fault 1 Zones and overprinting Zone (1), and forming the zonation due to gradual metasomatism.
This prograde stage Zone (2), Zone (3), Zone (4), and Zone (5). Hydrothermal fluid has been mixed
with meteoric fluid, resulting lower acidity and temperature and formed Zone (6) and Zone (7).
Degradation in solubility of the fluids causing the retrogeade stage and precipitated Zone (8) in
some places.

the relative direction north-south, northwest-southeast and northeast-southwest. Host rock of the
mineralization are turbidite volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks of the Halang Formation, consist of
interlayered sandstone and siltstone with intercalations of breccia. There are 5 zones of alteration:
chlorite zone, chlorite-carbonate zone, smectitezeolite zone, smectite-kaolinite zone, illitesmectite-carbonate zone. Hydrothermal alteration zones that show high mineralization with the
set of ore minerals such as native gold, electrum, native silver, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena,
arsenopyrite, and tennantite-tetrahedrite is generally found in the illite-smectite-carbonate
alteration zone. Hydrothermal structures were identified as massive vein and diatreme breccia.
Various types of vein textures are present, such as massive, cockade, banded, bladed carbonate,
crustiform, and saccharoidal. Something interesting about this study is almost all of gangue
minerals present are carbonate, and minor quartz with a high grade of gold (until 83 g/t Au). The
temperature of mineralization estimated from fluid inclusion study of quartz ranges from 250o
298 C. It is estimated the depth of mineralization is 890 meters below the paleosurface. The
hidrotermal fluid is dilute, with an average salinity <0,8 wt% NaCl equiv. It is speculated that these
systems form as a result of the mixing of hydrothermal fluid (dominant by meteoric water) with
CO2-rich waters. Based on the data and comparison to existing models, its indicates that the ore
deposits types present in the research area is typical of low sulphidation epithermal especially
carbonate-base metal-gold mineralization system.

RARE EARTH ELEMENT (REE) & TRACE ELEMENTS ANALYSIS OF MAGMATIC ORIGIN PROCESS
FROM THE ERTSBERG INTRUSION, PAPUA, INDONESIA
Kuat Yogiristanto & Dwi Menur Mandriati S.
Padjajaran University - Bandung
ABSTRACT
The Ertsberg Intrusion (EI) is located approximately 1.5 km southeast of the Grasberg
super-porphyry Cu-Au deposit (GIC), in the Gunung Bijih (Ertsberg) Mining District, West Papua,
Indonesia. This Ertsberg Mining District in Papua, Indonesia, contains one of the largest Cu-Au
deposits on the planet. Based on Van Nort et al (1991) statements, which conclude the EMD hosts
one of the largest Cu-Au deposits especially porphyry copper deposits that range between 0.8
3% and 0.2 5 g/t. Beside that the ranging of source approximately from 30 to 2500 Mt.
Not only known as the enrichment of Cu & Au, but also God has given another gifts for
Papuas Land such as an abundance of Trace Elements and Rare Earth Elements (REE). Traceelement data are normalized to mid-ocean ridge basalt following the procedure of Pearce (1983),
and REE data are normalized to the Orguiel chondrite following the procedure of Taylor and
McLellan (1985).
Trace-element of Large-ion-lithophile elements in both rock types are enriched
approximately 100 times that of MORB. Both Ta and Nb show slight enrichment based on MORB.
Beside that, the slight enrichment of P and Zr above MORB values can be explained based on
presence of apatite and zircon in the Ertsberg Intrusion igneous suite. High-field-strength elements
Ti, Y, and Yb are depleted with respect to MORB. The depleted Ti could be the result of sphene in

the source. The igneous rock could be determined as from an arc setting through geochemically
analysis of Ti- Zr, Y-Nb, and Rb-Y+Nb covariation plots of the Diorite and porphyry dikes. Chondritenormalized REE patterns for the Ertsberg Diorite and porphyry dikes shows diagram which
explained the Light REE are enriched 100 times that of primitive mantle and heavy REE (HREE) are
enriched 10 times. The La/Yb ratio is approximately 10 for all Ertsberg Intrusion igneous rocks.
Our method officially based on the determination of magma processes related to
enrichment of these elements. These enrichments is the result of the magmatic origin processes
occur in Ertsberg Intrusion. The volume of Ertsberg Intrusion that has been estimated by
3
3
McMahon (1994) and Porter (2004) approximately 20 km , with a minimum estimate of ~6 km . It
is the result of a two-stage process: intrusion and crystallization of a large volume of magma,
followed rapidly by intrusion of porphyry dikes. In the roof and upper sides of a crystallizing
magma chamber, trace elements and volatiles are enriched by the Soret effect (gradient magma
chamber) resulting in a compositional contrast between magma at the margin of an intrusion, and
that in the center. Covariant plots of trace elements coupled with normalized rare earth element
(REE) data support the proposal that the suite of igneous rocks in the Ertsberg Intrusion formed in
a magmatic arc setting.

ABSTRACT
Porphyry deposit is one of hydrothermal deposit which has potential to yield economic minerals
such as gold, copper and molybdenum. Studying the geological concept of porphyry deposit like
lithology, alteration, mineralization and vein type can laid to concept of mineralization
environmental which generates ore. Analysis of quartz vein density is very important to determine
the high grade and low grade mineralization zone in the study of mineralization occurrences in
porphyry deposit systems.
This research is purposed to determine the distribution of lithology, zone of alteration and the
correlation between quartz vein density and mineralization of the Batu Hijau porphyry deposit in
this case study observing on Bench 210mRL of geology model. Detail data analysis and observation
are conducted on over 121 geological cores logging which passed bench 210 in window 15 meters
cores length and several additional data from blasthole and highwall mapping.
The major wall rock units of the area is recognized with relatively ages from oldest to youngest are
andesitic volcaniclastic and intrusive quartz diorite body. These rock units are intruded by at least
two texturally distinct stages of Tonalite porphyries, which are referred to as Intermediate
Tonalite and Young Tonalite. Andesitic volcaniclastic rock are the most common rock-type
within the deposit. The hydrothermal alteration centered on the research area shows a
progression of alteration and spatially overlapping stage from central biotite-magnetite alteration

(Potassic) through transitional hydrothermal stage of Pale Green Mica alteration (Intermediate
Argillic), distal epidote-chlorite (Propylitic) to background chlorite-calcite and late, structurally
controlled feldspar-destructive alteration (Argillic). The primary copper minerals are Bornite
(Cu5FeS4) and Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) correlate with early to transitional hydrothermal stage and
correlated to the highest quartz vein density. Pyrite (FeS) contents increases within propylitic
alteration in outer part of the deposit, in the low grade core. The quartz vein distribution are
classified as Very Strong (10-15%), Strong (5-9,9%), Moderate (3-4,9%) and Weak (0,3-2,9%). The
copper and gold mineralization is strongly coincident with the intensity of quartz vein stockwork.
The higher quartz vein density in Bench 210mRL is the higher Cu-Au assay content and generally
occurs in Bornite dominated zone. And the lower quartz vein density is the lower Cu assay content
and generally occurs in pyrite dominated zone.T he Intermediate Tonalite contains up to 15 %
quartz veins by volume and the stock working while Young Tonalite dykes, in contrast contain
much less veining and weaker mineralization; usually <0.30 % Cu.

nine wells: GRD32-02, GRD32-05, GRD32-10, GRD37-05, GRD37-07, GRD37-11, GRD40-06, GRD4010, dan GRD44-09. Based on those analysis, stratigraphy of the research area consists of
Paleocene-Middle Miocene Altered Limestone Unit which is cut by Intrusion Units which consist of
Andesite Unit, Fragmented Andesite Unit, Plagioclase Diorite Unit, Quartz Diorite Unit, Hornblende
Diorite Unit, and Biotite Diorite Unit.the order of those intrusion is based on radiometry result so
the age of each intrusion is known.
The research area had gone through hydrothermal alteration process with weak to very
strong intensity. This process created six hydrothermal alteration zone, they are the QuartzBiotite-Magnetite Zone, Quartz-Sericite-Pyrite Zone, Pyrite-Calcite Zone, Diopside-GarnetAnhydrite Zone, Mica-Talc-Actinolite Zone, and Sulphide Zone. Mineralization process which
occurred on the research area created three mineralization zone, they are Pyrite-Pyrrhotite Zone,
Chalcopyrite-Bornite-Covellite Zone, and Molybdenite Zone. The main zone of mineralization in
the research area is Chalcopyrite-Bornite-Covellite Zone, which associated with Quartz-BiotiteMagnetite Zone and Sulphide Zone.

which have intruded close to the near-vertical faulted contact between the Shale Member of
Cretaceous Ekmai Formation and the stratigaphically overlying Paleocene Waripi and Eocene
Faumai Formations.
The different protoliths have produced different skarn mineralogies. There are both prograde and
retrograde assemblages, and quartz vein stockworks, as well as over-printing hydrothermal
breccias. The ore mineralogies of the research area consist of sulfides and oxides group. The
sulfides consist of pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, bornite, galena, specularite and
pyrrhotite. While the oxides consist of magnetite and hematite. Prograde skarn alteration consists
of garnet and clinopyroxene, and retrograde skarn alteration consists of tremolite, epidote and
chlorite. The mineralization is presented by pyrite, chalcopyrite (the main ore-bearing of copper),
and galena. Textures of the ore minerals at The Big Gossan based on polished section succesively
are replacement, infilling, and exsolution. The paragenesa of Big Gossan skarn are prograde, which
contain higher Cu in garnet and clinopyroxene skarn, and retrograde, in tremolite and actinolite
skarn. Quartz and pyrite are stabile in both paragenesa.

Suhu fluida panas bumi mencapai 180C,
terperangkap sekitar 1 km dikedalaman, pada zona permeabilitas sekunder yaitu batuan klastik
vulkanik tua, berumur Kwarter. Retakan-reatakan pada tubuh batuan vulkanik purba berfungsi
sebagai zona permeabilitas primer. Potensi panas bumi tersimpan dalam reservoir yaitu sekitar 10
-20MW. Pemanfaatan sumberdaya mineral dan panas bumi yang terpola dengan baik akan
menghasilkan pendapatan yang tinggi untuk meningkatkan perekonomian daerah di wilayah
Maluku Utara.
