Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor

Do You Believe?

In the recent Christian film, Do You Believe?, our

Ultimate Man Day speaker for this year, Brian Bosworth
(The Boz), played the role of a flawed believer. Brians
testimony touched the hearts of about 1,000 men and
boys recently. Like Mary and Martha, he answered the
question, Everyone who lives and believes in Me shall
never die. Do you believe this? (John 11:26).
In 1 Corinthians 15:3-7, Paul expressed one of the
early church creeds concerning Christ: He died for our sins according to
the scriptures, was buried and raised on the third day. Remember that
the first book in the New Testament was not written until 15-20 years after
Jesus rose from the dead, and it was another 30 years or so before all the
books were completed in the canon scriptures. How did Christians know
what to believe in the absence of inspired writings which told of Christs
life and teaching? They had the guidance of the Holy Spirit, apostolic
teaching, and special creeds which were led by the Spirit. These were
short statements of faith which could be easily memorized and were
summaries of Christian theology. Some scholars believe that over 30
creeds were used to express basic beliefs.
We certainly see some creeds listed in the New Testament, as in 1
Corinthians and when Paul wrote to Timothy: He was manifested in the
flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the
nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory (1 Timothy 3:16) and
If we have died with Him, we will also live with Him; if we endure, we
will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He also will deny us; if we are
faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy
2:11-13).
It is not enough to recite a creed, but to know Christ. So do you believe?
The result of that faith is According to His great mercy, He has caused
us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus
Christ from the dead (1 Peter 1:3). Natural hope keeps the farmer on
the tractor; it keeps the prisoner alive; it helps the student stay in the
books; it urges the patient to watch for the morning. Spiritual hope keeps
the grieving one who believes in the One who conquered death to say
through tears, not Good-bye, but Ill see you later. We do not just grit
our teeth or wish upon a star, but have a settled hope in the living Lord.
When the invitation time comes at the end of the message, turn from your
sin and turn to Christ that you may be born again. Your life will never
be the same. If you believe in your heart, you will affirm it with your lips
(Matthew 10:32).
