■ An AARP Driver Safety Program
will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30
p.m. on May 11 and 13 at the Mecosta
County Commission on Aging in
Mecosta.
The classroom course helps older
drivers become more aware of the
changes in vision, hearing and reaction
time due to aging and how to adjust
driving accordingly.
There are no tests. The class is
taught in two, four-hour sessions over
a two-day period. The course reviews
basic rules of the road and the typi-
cal types of violations that occur with
older drivers, such as failure to yield
the right-of-way, improper left turns
and entering and exiting expressways.
Tips are given to improve these situa-
tions.
The state of Michigan passed
legislation encouraging auto-insurance
companies to grant seniors (50 years
and older) a discount on their auto
insurance payment for successfully
completing a qualified course in driver
safety. People who take this course
meet this requirement. Consult your
insurance agent.

There is a $12 fee for AARP members
and $14 fee for non-members. The

us with pollen and other al- al
lergens. But it’s not just the
great outdoors that cause al- al
lergies. The Environmental
Protection Agency reports
that indoor organic air pol-pol
lution levels can be two to
five times higher than their
outdoor equivalent.
It’s time to learn how to
fight back against allergies
and the pollutants in our
homes that trigger them.
More than 67 million
Americans suffer from al- al
lergy symptoms, ranging

from hay fever to asth-
ma. And many indoor

ing dust mites and
pet dander -- are
the top asthma
and allergy trig-
gers in young
children.

make your home relatively
allergen-free.
Suck It Up
Vacuuming is one of the
fastest ways to eliminate
many home allergens and
smart
learning to vacuum smart-
er can help. Always clean a
room from top to bottom,
starting with curtains, tops
of dressers and windowsills.
A good vacuum cleaner also
is critical, such as those with
stretch hoses and special
brushes to clean difficult
surfaces.
Consider bagless upright
models with more powerful
motors that can suck up dust
mites from tough crevices,
such as Panasonic’s new MC-

relies on a powerful twelve-

It Comes Out In
The Wash
Regular washings of lin-
ens is key, and the hotter the
water the better. Wash bed-
ding weekly with 140-degree
water, which is hot enough
to kill dust mites. So long
as the water is sufficiently
hot, it isn’t necessary to have
an expensive washer with a
steam cycle.
If you prefer to limit
your hot water heater to 120
degrees or less to prevent
scalding, consider a wash-
ing machine with a “sanitary
cycle” that superheats wa-
ter internally. You also can
choose special anti-allergen
detergents.
Work The Room
Limiting clutter is one of
the simplest ways to reduce
home allergens. And if you
really want to make your
home as allergen-free as pos-
sible, there are several easy
and inexpensive homemade
cleaning solutions.
For sanitizing counter-
tops, spray a 50-50 mixture of
water and hydrogen peroxide
(the kind in a brown bottle)
and wipe with a dry cloth.
Tough bathroom mildew can
be cleaned with a 50-50 mix-
ture of water and white vin-
egar, while soap scum can be
removed by sprinkling bak-
ing soda and scrubbing with
a warm moistened cloth.
There’s only so much you
can do to combat outdoor
contaminants during allergy
season. Take that fight in-
doors and you’ll have a better
chance at breathing freely.

named Isabel. She’s about 8 to

for adoption at the Montcalm
County Animal Shelter in
Stanton. She has beautiful brown
and white fur, and is looking for
a new house with a big yard and
kind owners. Isabel has been
started on all her vaccinations
except rabies, but will need a
booster shot after she is adopted out. This dog is available for
adoption starting May 4 and has a shelter ID# of 10/04/47.

Meditation and Relaxation

One of the tools we can learn to use to help us deal with the memories of past trauma is Meditation.
In the early 1980’s I was working in the plant medical department at Diesel Equipment, one of the General
Motors factories in Grand Rapids. The job was very stressful and I decided to attend a class to try to learn
how to relax. I had developed an ulcer and had high blood pressure. The weekend fun of sailing, partying
with friends, and excessive drinking was making things worse instead of better.
I realized that I did not know how to relax; I did not know how to slow down my mind and let my body
recharge and rejuvenate. So I attended a four hour relaxation class. It turned out to be one of those life
changing experiences.
For the first time in years, I realized that the pressure I had in my chest was not normal. With the daily
practice of the mental training exercises I had learned, the blood pressure returned to normal and the ulcer
healed. The effects of this was so profound, I decided to explore further. I took a training program call “The
Silva Method”. This was a four day course targeted at teaching people to learn to use their own minds for the
benefit of their own health.
We had learned to meditate. Meditation is a way to relax the body and recharge all the chemicals that are
constantly being used up. I had always viewed meditation as something strange and
odd. I had seen pictures of the Guru with folded arms and legs, chanting in a blue
haze of incense. In reality it is very different.
Meditation has three parts. The Induction helps us change quickly from an active,
awake state of mind to a more passive, restful state of mind. The Programming Phase
involves mental pictures and statements, much like daydreaming. When we mentally
see ourselves at an ideal place of relaxation, our brain thinks we are actually there
and it begins to manufacture the chemicals associated with relaxation. Positive
affirmations (statements) help up-date our operating programs. The Ending is a
