Bayview is Back
By Katie McFadden

The Bayview is back! Nearly

three-and-a-half years since the
Broad Channel restaurant met
the bay during Hurricane Sandy,
the Bayview is finally ready to
open its doors. Its opening with
a new name, Bayview Grille &
Marina, and a completely different look that is sure to blow
people out of the water.
When you walk into the new
and improved Bayview, the
word, wow may slip out of
your mouth. Those who remember the Bayview Restaurant &
Lounge will find themselves
walking into a completely different place, but its a transformation that wont disappoint.
With a variety of blues on the
walls, decorated with beach and
nautical items, the new Bayview
feels like its meant to be right
on the water, which can be seen
through its many glass doors
and windows. Taking advantage
of the view and waterfront spot,
the owners made the back deck
even larger, with 100-square-

feet of space that will feature

an outdoor bar, live music and
bayside dining. Inside, youll
find a 28-person bar featuring 12 different taps, 16 bottled
beers, wine, and frozen drinks
and specialties like the Colossal
will make a comeback. The bar
will feature 10 65-inch TVs all
around, which will play all of the
sporting events you could want,
even things like UFC fights, boxing and soccer. The owners, including Rob Pisani and Nicky
and Anthony Martelli, put in
careful consideration to detail,
making sure to match the stainless steel and light tan wood of
the ceiling with the tables on
the floor. Not wanting to give it
all away, customers can expect
other big surprise changes.
As much of the area has recovered since Sandy, threeand-a-half years may seem
like a long overdue return, but
the Bayview comeback almost
didnt happen. Everything
was destroyed. The doors were
gone, the retractable glass atrium was gone, the deck disap-

peared, the kitchen basically fell

into the bay, the wood flooring
lifted and cracked. There had
to be $750,000 in losses and we
werent covered by anything. I
wanted to bring this place back.
I had it since 1999, but we did
the paperwork for FEMA and
got nothing, we went to SBA,
which said they would give us
a $330,000 loan, but after a few

months, they came back and

said they dont offer money to
places over wetlands. Thats
when I gave up, Pisani said.
Financially I couldnt do it. It
wasnt even a thought to come
back until a year ago, around
February or March, when the
landlords came to me and said,

New York Yucks

These politicians come and try
to prove how New York they are.
Theyre all lame. Consultants,
probably hired through a de Blasio non-profit, are paid gobs of
money to tell their candidates
to fold and eat pizza with their
hands. With pizza, you dont
use a fork in New York.
What consultants cant do is
tell them how to be New York
funny. The Daily News took aim
at Ted Cruz because the Grandpa Munsterin-the-making had
maligned New York Values.
The front page of the tabloid offered directions to the candidate
upon his visit to here last week:
Hey Ted: Take the FU train to the
Bronx.
Its a pretty good bet The Daily
News headline writers are from
New York. But I wonder if theyll
be replaced. Cleaned up and

gentrified. Like too much of old

New York. I dont miss the graffiti or crime of the old days but I
think New York might not be as
funny.
Good thing Rockaway is so far
behind the times. We should be
able to hang on to real New York
long after its left the other boroughs. Our collection of kooks
and characters isnt going anywhere any time soon. And Im
guessing well keep our humor
too. Its the only way to manage
our insanity.
Every now and then we get
fooled into thinking Rockaway
is the next hot spot because Williamsburg shows up. But the
thing is, hipsters are like migratory birds. They flock here
in the summer and after Labor
Day they return to cooler places
along the L train line. Its just a
summer fling.
Theres hardly any evidence
they were here at all.
Rockaway goes back to being
Rockaway. Rockaway fads are
another places nostalgia. Any

Gentrification, schmentrification.
Theres a lot to be said about
these intrepid kids from Kansas
and Iowa who move into high
crime areas and help places
turn around. They move in and
a coffee shop follows. And then
a restaurant and a bike shop.
But theyre like aliens from
outer Disney World. They come
in peace but not equipped.
They speak English but they
dont speak New York.
Some people dont like gentrification because, they say, it
displaces poor people. Maybe,
but its hard to argue that classic
street characters and humor are
being displaced, too.
Maybe they exist but I dont
think anyone funny ever came
from Kansas or Iowa or the entire Midwest if you subtract Chicago. Im pretty sure people
who are gentrifying neighborhoods like The Big Bang Theory.

I dont know if you get this in

other places but when a rather
large woman tries cutting a movie line and a guy in a thick Brooklyn accent says, Hey, Queen
Latifah theres a line here. You
know in youre in New York.
I forget where I heard this one
but it kinda captures New York
as well as anything Ive heard.
The guy says, you know how we
sometimes greet people with,
How ya doin? You might
step on an elevator and nod at
the guy and say How ya doin?
You might even say it as you pass
someone on the street. But Im
standing on a checkout line and
look at the guy behind me for
like a second. So I say, How
you doin? The guy gives me this
look and says, What, are you my
doctor?
The guy who tells the story
adds: Pretty rude, huh? But funny as hell.
Youre not getting that in Kansas. You might not hear it in New
York much longer. But in Rockaway, wiseasses still rule.

Foul Wind:
Parts of Boardwalk And Beaches
Wont Open Until July
A city official sent the following to the Rockaway Times:
We are moving the expected
open date for the smaller section - from Beach 108th to Beach
126th - to July 2016, as a result of
safety measures put in place last
month following the tragic crane
collapse in Lower Manhattan.
These new safety regulations
required that all crawler cranes
cease operation and go into safety mode whenever steady winds
were forecast to exceed 20mph
or gusts to exceed 30mph; as a
result of these safety measures,
work along the boardwalk has
been halted a number of times
in recent weeks to ensure the
safety of pedestrians and those
working on the boardwalk project.
As The Rockaway Times was
going to press more disappointing news arrived. In addition to
an unfinished boardwalk, beach
access will be limited for about

a mile. According to the Parks

Department access to the beach
from Beach 106 to Beach 126
will be restricted to three access
points. Through July, beach access will remain open at B108
and B116th Streets. Access will
be provided at B126th St starting on Memorial Day 2016.
Residents and visitors on other streets will have to make it to
those access points to get to the
beach.
Many residents were not
pleased with the news. Some
of the comments on the Rockaway Times Facebook page included: What about the mild
winter? If they worked like they
should have the wind wouldnt
be an issue.How many days
were there gusts over 30 miles
an hour? Those few days pushes
the boardwalk back six weeks?!
.If theyre using wind as an excuse in Rockaway, itll never be
finished.

CB 14 Monthly Meeting Recap

By Pat Morgan

Community Board #14 held its

regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 12 at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Beach 90th Street.
Queens Borough President,
Melinda Katz, kicked off the
meeting with an overview of various topics. She said the design
phase of the Far Rockaway library
is moving; there will be $2M for
Sandpiper Park, and money for
upcoming work at Tribute Park
(repaving and improved lighting).
She noted that the Broad Channel Street Raising Task Force is in
Phase II (14 & 19 Road).
BP Katz remained neutral on
the Rockaway Beach Rail (aka
Queens Rail) Line. She cited that
this solution as well as the Queensway option have significant issues
and she is letting these plans play
out before she supports either one.
CB14 welcomed three new
Board members (Desiree Maple,
Edward Benson, and Khaleel Anderson).
CB14 District Manager, Jonathan Gaska, announced that NYC

has provided funding to update

the CB14s currently lame website and improvements should
be made by July 1. He noted the
Department of Sanitation will be
cleaning the usual areas that are
breeding grounds for mosquitoes and that we can do our part
by emptying any containers filled
with rainwater. He moved on to
the park in Arverne (B62-72 north
of the El) and how Arverne By The
Sea will donate $3M to the Parks
Department once they start their
final phase, which is estimated
as being two years from now. The
$3M is not enough and Gaska
stated that a Parkhouse with bathrooms with a few swings will cost
$1.2M alone. More funding from
elected officials will be needed to
make this happen.
A number of people spoke during the Public Speaking portion
of the meeting including NYPIRG
(help with small claims court process), Jeffrey Williams-Maisonet
(who is making a documentary on youth struggles in failing
schools), Rosyln Mason from
Sheltering Arms (supporting safe

Are State School

Tests Easier
This Year?
By Kathy Louis

For the past two weeks,

Rockaway and Broad Channel students in grades 3
through 8 have been dutifully slogging through
New York State mandated
English Language Arts and
Mathematics
assessment
tests. This is the third year
the tests have been used to
measure achievement in
Common Core standards.
However, this year there
have been reportedly fewer stress-induced tears and
stomach aches as well as
fewer parents opting their
children out of taking the
tests. Time limits for the
individual tests have been
waived this year as announced by the NYS Education Department in January.
Public school teachers
and school administrators
have also been under less
stress this year. In December 2015, the state Board of
Regents voted in favor of a
four-year moratorium on
using state test results as a
measure of teacher effectiveness and school success.
NYS DOE spokesperson
Jeanne Beattie affirmed last
week that student results of
the 2016 state tests would
not be used to evaluate the
performance of teachers or
schools until the 2019-2020
school year.
Another big change in
the state tests this year is
the publication company that designed them. In
July 2015, the state Education Department dropped
London-based testing giant Pearson in favor of USbased Questar Assessment,
Inc. The new tests purportedly have fewer questions
and the questions are supposedly more appropriate for the grade levels for

which they are intended.

Changes this year are the
direct result of parent and
teacher protests the previous two years of NYS Common Core assessments.
Teachers protested the use
of tests as tools for professional performance evaluation. Parents and educators
believed the tests were inappropriately difficult. Statewide, nearly 20-percent of
students opted-out of
math and reading tests last
year.
A look at the results of
last
years
assessments
may well justify the teacher and parent protests. Not
made public until August,
NYS Education Department
scores for public (and charter) school students indicate only 31.3 percent of
test takers passed ELA and
just 38.1 percent passed the
math test. Although these
results are a bit higher than
the previous two years, they
are still indicative of failure to meet Common Core
standards.
Test results are presented
in four levels : Level I, well
below standards ; Level II,
below standards ; Level III,
proficient ; and Level IV, excels in standards. (NYC DOE
report card or progress report grades use the same
level designations.)
NYC
District 27, which includes
Howard Beach, Ozone Park,
Woodhaven, Richmond Hill
and parts of Jamaica, 2015
test results were significantly lower than those of
the state as a whole. PS 114
in Belle Harbor and PS 47 in
Broad Channel were among
some of the highest scoring
schools in the district. MS
53 in Far Rockaway, designated a struggling school

by the state, had one of the
lowest scores in the district.
Although it takes some
effort to find the 2015 test
results for your childs individual school, you may
do so by going to www.p12.
nysed.gov/irs/pressRelease/2015800/home.html.
This is a PDF file nearly
2000 pages long. District
27 school results begin on
page 1024. Charter school
results are found there as
well. Charter schools are
public schools administered by private boards under contract to the city.
Private and parochial
schools must teach children
according to Common Core
standards as well. However, the testing schedule is
different. Catholic schools
within the Brooklyn Diocese used the same standardized tests on the same
days the past two weeks,
but only grades 4, 6 and 8
were tested. Individual pri-

vate schools may or may not
choose to make their scores
on the tests public. The
reason private schools have
different rules is complicated stated the State DOE
spokesperson. Those differences will be explained
in a future article.
The Federal No Child Left
Behind Act of 2001 supported standard-based education reform with the
premise that setting high
standards and establishing
measurable goals could improve individual outcomes
in education. In 2013, NYS
redesigned
assessment
tests to align with national
Common Core standards.
It was one of the first states
to do so.
To date, roughly 60 to 70
percent of our students do
not meet those standards.
Results of last years tests
did not reach schools until late July or early August.
The state spokesperson
said this years results may
be published sooner than
last year.

Keep the Dragon Boat Alive

By Katie McFadden

The Dragon Boat has been

slayed and is in need of a life
preserver. The colorful vessel
that makes its way around Jamaica Bay was severely damaged by 60 mph winds during
a storm in early April. Her
supporters are hoping to bring
her back to life, but they could
use some help.
Her real name is The Dragonflys Banquet, but is affectionately known as the Drag-

on Boat. The dragon-inspired

vessel was designed by Poppa Neutrino and built in the
1990s. Poppa Neutrino aka

Dear Editor:
Just wanted to let you know
that your article a couple of
weeks back inspired Coastal
Frozen Yogurt to participate
in the 1010 WINS small
business grant contest. We
were actually chosen as one
of the top 10 finalists with our
business idea for the grant!
Unfortunately,
we
were
not the top winner (we still
received a Canon Printer for
being top 10- so not a total
bust).
Lizzmonade
was
the
overall winner, you may have
seen her lemonade stand up
at the Riis Park bizarre last
summer.
Overall, it was a great
experience and we had the
opportunity to meet and
network with Gregg Bishop,
the NYC Commissioner of
Small Business Services,
his staff- who were very
knowledgeable
and
informative, as well as other
small business owners from
around NYC. At the very
least we had some Rockaway
representation at the contest,
which is a good thing!
Thanks for including the
article in the paper!!

Dear Community:
After three - plus years
of service to the Rockaway
community, I have been
transferred out. It has been
my honor to serve as the
Commanding Officer of the
100th Precinct. I am sad to
go and will always have fond
memories of my experiences
while I was here. There are
so many great people I would
like to thank, but there are too
many to list. My replacement
is captain Janice Holmes
who I know will continue the
great relationship that we
all fostered together. I wish
everyone the best of luck
and I truly will miss serving
as your commanding officer.
Thank you all.

Between The Bridges

38.5 Billion Miles and No Frequent Flyer miles?

By Peter Mahon

This month I celebrate my 66th

birthday on this planet. Given
the fact that both the Earth and
I travel some 584 million miles
each year as we orbit around our
sun, I figure that to date, I have
rolled up some 38.5 billion miles
of travel in my lifetime. Impressive, right? At least until you realize that no commercial airline,
or even NASA, will honor your
frequent flyer miles.
I never really thought too much
about getting old but perhaps I
should have. After all, like the song
by the Five Man Electrical Band
back in 1970, the signs were always
blocking out the scenery... right in
front of me, staring me in the face.
Shortly after I turned 30 my
dark brown hair rapidly turned
white over a period of weeks. In
and of itself that wouldnt have
been too bad, but it soon got a
whole lot worse. Just prior to the
color change, on a dare, I had my
hair permed because I was told
it would make me look like Mike

Brady, the father of the Brady

Bunch on television. Unfortunately after my hair turned all
white, I was simply told my new
found do only reminded everyone of a Q-tip farm. It took me
three months to grow out of that
fashion indiscretion!
The eyes were the next to go. I
have always been an avid reader but suddenly I found that my
arms, even when fully extended,
would not serve to help focus the
printed word. So what? Reading glasses are no big deal, right?
Everyone uses them. At first it was
magnification 1.0, then 1.25, then
2.50 and so on until today when
I can only get my reading glasses
from the guys at NASA who made
the Hubble Space telescope.
Then, adding insult to injury, I
finally hit the half-century mark
and my very first birthday card
comes from AARP, an organization that has hounded me ever
since trying to sell me life insurance to help defray final expenses. I keep writing them back tell-

ing them in no uncertain terms

that once I am gone, any final
expenses are between them and
Hillebrand Funeral Home, dont
bother me!
Next in line was my hearing.
Slowly I have come to realize
the words most spoken to me in
the household are For the love
of God would you turn the volume down, they can hear that
in Howard Beach! At the same
time I found my most often spoken words to others are now
What did you say? My family keeps urging me to have my
hearing checked but I quickly
realized that when you live in a
home with three women, a dog,
four cats, a guinea pig, a bearded
dragon and two turtles, theres a
lot to be said for not quite hearing everything that is going on
around you.
One mini stroke (TIA), two
back operations, a bad gall bladder, a hernia, skin cancer, a broken foot and a bum right knee
now makes it difficult for me to

without discomfort. Last year at
Disney World in Florida, I finally relented and took my familys
suggestion and rented a motorized scooter to transport me
around the parks. Initially I was
totally embarrassed until I discovered that I could drink my way
around the world at Epcot Center
and nobody was the wiser!
Each morning now I follow my
late mothers sage advice to routinely check the Irish comics (the
obituaries for all you non-Irish
out there) to ascertain if I still
remain attached to this earthy
realm. Its really not hard to do as
they tend to list everyone alphabetically and I simply go right to
the Ms. When I dont see my
name among the departed, I remain very grateful for a family
that loves me, friends who put up
with me and for everything else I
enjoy each day here in our Broad

It has been sailing around Jamaica Bay for the past 18 years

The Dragon Boat had an

The Lazer Speaks

THE BRIDGES

By Lou Pastina
Ever come over the Crossbay or Marine Parkway Bridge
after a hard day at work or
school and look out upon the
ocean, with the sun reflecting far off over the horizon?
As soon as you hit the bridges
you can immediately feel the
breeze, slightly cooler than
wherever you were before,
and welcomed.
The horizon stretches out
forever and its just at the top
of the bridges that you realize
that the world is really round
because you can almost see
the crested edges of water just
drifting off into infinity. An
occasional cloud drifts by as
to say, hey you, come on over
to this spit of land and enjoy
the sandbar called Rockaway.
Its at those times that you
really love that you live here.
The peninsula beckons to the
driver to park their car, forget

your troubles and enjoy life a

bit. In the summer, there are
ships that line the waterways
waiting to enter New York
harbor. They stretch all the
way toward Long Beach. On
Saturday nights the cruise
ships move in the opposite
direction heading to adventures and points unknown.
But I am happy to just be
here, because the warm
winds caress, and the gentle waters rehabilitate. From
time to time, fish run along
the shore and chase the baitfish causing a stir and ripple
along the waves.
Its at this time of year
that the seagulls own the
beach, alone in their search
for scavenged relics. Those
brave enough to walk their
dogs along the beach, give
their pets that sense of freedom, unbounded by a leash.
They chase the seagulls from
jetty to jetty. The sun is get-

ting stronger, and despite

the March winds that have
followed us into April, May
flowers are on their way.
Trees are beginning to
bloom too, and a few daffodils have been tricked into
blooming as well. Can tulips
be far behind? The cherry
blossoms, redbuds and Bradford pear trees are preparing
to unfold before us, and despite allergic reactions, will
thrill us all with their splash
of colors against the blue sky
and ocean.
Yes despite winters protests, spring is breaking
through, and with it the hope
that is summer. Soon the peninsula will be a buzz with visitors, and we will have to share
our paradise with our neighbors. Buts that ok, when we
needed help they came and
they helped us, so they are
most welcomed to enjoy this
physically beautiful area we

call home, Rockaway. And

hopefully our aquatic friends
will visit us too, as in past
years, the whales and dolphins that poke their heads
above the waterline to say
hello. And maybe, just maybe when we look out over the
horizon, perhaps a mermaid
or two. Ah, spring is here at
last, time to hope for summer
as we cruise over the bridges
into Brigadoon.

MONTHLY MEETING

Continued from Page 6

streets in Far Rockaway), Florence Ferguson from Friends of

B59 Playground Association.
Other local residents expressed
their concerns about the need
for speedbumps on B60 and
B62, lack of parking on RBB
(B98-99) and dog feces on the
beach (B96).
Jose Velez from the CB Parks
and Public Safety Committee
closed the meeting by discussing
three issues. The first was the Department of Parks Enforcement
Patrol (PEP) who will be the shoreline patrol from 6-9 pm during the
beach season. They will have approximately 36 Park Security Officers, who do not have the power
to arrest anyone and will basically
ask people to get out of the water.
There will be nine peace officers
that have the capability of issuing
summonses and arresting people. This staff is responsible for all
of the Rockaways. The Committee
has asked the City for more PEP
officers as well as details on how
they will be deployed.
The topic of kayaks on the
ocean was discussed as there are

THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2016

no landing facilities on the beach.
This will be discussed at the next
meeting.
The most popular issue discussed during this segment was
the bikes on the boardwalk. The
Parks department has agreed to
allow bikes on the boardwalk seven days a week with no time restrictions. CB14 passed this after a
15-minute debate on whether the
appropriate signage for the bike
lanes should be displayed. The
DOT representative at the meeting could not commit to putting
signage on the entire boardwalk.
The committee moved on to
the $1.5M allotted to the handball courts by the boardwalk from
B103-B105. There will be eight
courts, a 16-foot fence and three
separate entrances among other
amenities. The implementation
design is scheduled to be completed in 2017 and construction
sometime in 2018. The design
presented to the committee included everything that was discussed in the prior workshop.
The next monthly board meeting is on May 10 at the Knights
of Columbus Hall located at 333
Beach 90th Street at 7:15 p.m.

Eating Around The World: In Rockaway

Drunken Noodles at TKBTS

By Pat Morgan

The borough of Queens is the

most ethnically diverse urban
area in the world. We boast over
150 different ethnic groups and
we speak 138 different languages.
We have the unique advantage of
having access to the wonderful
cuisines of these countries, some
in our own back yard and the rest
less than an hour away. In this column, well visit some of the lesser
known dishes at the more recent
arrivals to the peninsula and surrounding areas, as well as our
tried and true local institutions.
Thai cooking places emphasis on
lightly prepared dishes with strong

aromatic components plus a spicy

edge. It is known for its complex
interplay of sour, sweet, salty, bitter, and spicy. Sitting in the middle
of Southeast Asia, the cooking of
Thailand has been influenced by
India to its west, Laos and Vietnam
to its east and China to the north.
Drunken noodles (or pad kee
mao), is a Chinese-influenced
dish popular in Thailand. In the
Thai language, kee mao means
drunkard. It is a stir-fried dish
typically made with the combination of broad rice noodles, soy
sauce, fish sauce, garlic, some sort
of protein, vegetables and various
seasonings. Chili and holy basil
provide its distinctive spiciness.
There are several theories on how
the dish was named. My two favorites are that it was either invented
by someone who came home drunk
and threw available ingredients into
a wok or someone thought the dish
was so spicy that drinking a beer was
necessary to cool down the palate.
Like any ethnic cuisine, the

BROAD CHANNEL BACK Celebrates
IN THE DAY 1929
Its 10th
Anniversary
The infamous Dead Mans

By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & his daughter

Katie Lucev

Todays aerial oblique view is

of the Broad Channel Community back in the late 1920s.
Old Hamilton Beach is shown
at the top right with the old Long

Island Railroad coming down

through Goose Creek, The Raunt
and then Broad Channel Station.
To the left of Hamilton Beach
is Howard Beach and the North
Channel Bridge leading to
Crossbay Road heading down to
Broad Channel.

Curve can be seen at the north

end of Broad Channel proper!
At the south end of the channel
are the Broad Channel Baths and
bathing beach and then the original
Crossbay Bridge to The Rockaways.
The Crossbay Road officially opened in late 1926. If you look closely,
you will notice there are NO TOLL
BOOTHS at the south end of Broad
Channel. Tolls came in the late 1930s.
You can see that the marsh
islands shown are much larger than in present times, due to
erosion over the years caused
by higher water levels and over
dredging of the bay bottom for
channels and landfill.
Back in the early 1800s, Jamaica
Bay was described as one big mud
flat at low tide, with one navigable
channel to Far Rockaway along the
Rockaway Beach bay front. The
Rockaway Inlet was located in the
area of P.S. 114 in Belle Harbor.

Where do you think New

York Citys Largest Sports and
Events venue is located?
Well, its right across the Marine Parkway Bridge at Aviator
Sports & Events Center. Their
space includes a whopping
175,000 square feet of indoor
sports and event space, along
with the adjoining outdoor
turf fields, plus free parking
for 2,000 cars. By the way, they
have two NHL-size skating
rings.
Did you know that they are
celebrating their 10th anniversary this year?
I sat down recently with Katrina Doell, Aviators Director of Marketing. She and the
entire organization are very

excited about this milestone.
Theyve revamped their website and are launching campaigns on social media.
For 10 years, Aviator has
been a family friendly, affordable and safe destination
for families in the Rockaways,
as well as all across NYC. Between the open activities like
rock wall and public skating
and the instructional sports
with world class coaches, we
are a place where families
have grown up. Were proud
of our Aviator family, Doell
said.
If you havent been there
lately, theres a ton of activities that they offer. There are
sports leagues of programs for
baseball, basketball, figure
skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse,
pickleball (a paddle sport),
soccer, tennis and volleyball.
There is also sky jump and the
arcade.
For anyone wanting to unwind, there is Aces Lounge
and Patio on the second floor.

This summer, Aces will be

home to Summer Series, featuring some of the top bands
in the area. Doell explained
how they also have expanded their food selection. We
also added Kosher food to our
food court. Aviator partnered
with Eat n Run caf to provide
this often asked for food court
option. They are also our official Kosher caterer.
In the celebratory spirit,
Aviator is having 10-Year Anniversary Monthly Promotions. She went on to say We
added a new day pass as part
of our anniversary celebration. We thought it was time
to offer this added value to
our customers. It includes unlimited public skating, unlimited rock climbing, unlimited

sky jump, and one session of

open basketball and volleyball. Its been going very well
and customers are happy that
we have created this value for
them to spend the day with us.
Its available on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holidays
and school breaks. I checked
their website and the All Day
Pass is currently $32.50 per
person (plus tax).
Doell added Were doing a
lot of special promotions for
this year. We have a different
discount for every month of
the year at AviatorSports.com/
10yearpromos. They range
from free trial classes to sales
on parties and summer camps.
The Aviator Staff pride
themselves on delivering the
highest standards of customer service. They want you feel
like part of the Aviator family.
Doell loves telling stories of
kids who took their first step
onto the ice years ago and are
now playing hockey in college. She has similar success
stories for members who are
active in gymnastics and other sports.

The Rockaway Times

She explained that a lot has
changed as far as the programs. Our camps program
is COMPLETELY overhauled.
A new director brings in a
wave of changes, including
new age-appropriate divisions, new science, reading,
and math programs, pedal carts and healthy menus.
Every day will be a different
activity, and kids are building
on what they learn. Remember, camps are about making
memories and having fun
while enhancing social skills.
We are available to schedule
private tours.
The weather is getting nicer,
so cross the bridge and check
out whats going on. Aviator
Sports & Events Center is located at Floyd Bennett Field,
3159 Flatbush Ave Brooklyn,
NY. Telephone: 718-758-7500.
Their hours of operation are:

THANK YOU ELAINE

Without love, life would be
challenging. We are connected
to one another by the essence
of love. Our true self is pure
love. Often we are comforted by
simple words, a soft touch or a
kind face. Recently, our community suffered the loss of our
dear dance studio owner Elaine
Freeburg.
The kindest, most loving person I have ever known. Generous, big hearted and so happy
to be herself. We strive all the
time to be in the moment and
to be ourselves but somehow

Page 23

Elaine knew how to do this effortlessly. It was love that kept

Elaine going. Her love for her
family, dance, and community.
She lived a full life and taught
us all so much about what love
is. To be kind is the greatest attribute one can have and Elaine
was full of kindness. When your
life is turned upside down you
need to have a strong support
system and love. It is only with
this love that you can move forward. Community, sangha, is of
utmost importance.
We are meant to live in a nur-

The Awning WarFIPVTFt

turing environment. For the

dancers at Mrs. Elaines School
of Dance they are at home
dancing with one another in the
beautiful space Elaine provided. Elaine created an environment for children where they
felt safe, loved and respected.
It wasnt only about the competition, Elaine taught the children to be good to one another.
In fact, I believe one of her last
wishes to the girls were, Be
good to one another. Profound
and life changing. If only we
were all good to one another.
Thank you Elaine for teaching our children to be kind and
good people. You will be forever in our hearts and we will
make you proud.
The yoga community at
Ocean Bliss was overflowing
with love and support during
this time. Their compassion
and kindness was felt in the
studio every day. As teachers
it is our job to guide, comfort
and support the students. We
are their leaders. The students
showed so much concern, love
and affection that the studio
became a healing sanctuary.

We realized how strong and

connected our yoga community had become. Elaine was
responsible for allowing us to
be a community. The seed was
planted and we fed it with love
and devotion.
In life there are a few things
that can really make for a
good life. Love, community
and kindness. If you are lucky
enough to have these three
things, you will always be happy. When darkness clouds your
vision, light will shine through
with love. Be thankful for the
love you have in family and
community. It is a blessing to
be surrounded by love. There
is no greater gift in life than to
have had love in your life, even
if its for a short time. We are in
a world created by love. All creation comes from this place of
love.
Thank you Elaine for the love
you gave to us all. You will always be remembered as the
kindest, loving dance teacher,
mother, wife, sister, daughter
and friend. You lived a great
life and we will always love and
miss you. XOXOXO

for her story Dear Old Dad,

a tribute to her father, Danny
McFadden, which was published before Fathers Day in
the June 18, 2015 issue. The
story was about Dannys role
as a United States Park Police
officer, a father and a neighbor. The Better Newspaper
Contest judges called the story, A heartfelt tribute that
was very, very interesting and
touching.
NYPA, founded in 1853, has
held the Better Newspaper
Contest since 1930. Each year,
more than 150 newspapers
across the state enter for a
chance at a prestigious award
that recognizes newspapers
and its staff for excellence in
writing, photography and advertising. This is the first solo
NYPA award for McFadden,
who has been a local journalist for more than three years
and has worked for the Rockaway Times since August 2014.

Teachers will use the technology to differentiate materials to

meet the needs of their scholars
and integrate Computer Science
for All, the new initiative announced by Chancellor Faria.
The IPads will also support Watersides work with many gifted
students who will continue to receive advanced instruction over
the Summer of 2016! For more
information, please contact Ms.
Amira at 718-634-1128.

The Waterside School for Leadership, MS318, is excited about

the technology upgrades they recently received to benefit all their
students in the coming school
year! Waterside was a recipient of
a technology grant from Queens
Borough President Melinda Katz.
The school plans new up-to-date
technology which includes new
IPADs, brand new Promethean
boards in every classroom, laptops and printers.

on their recent trip to Florida.
Fred, a Rockaway Times salesman, enjoyed his time in the sun

but no doubt spent some of that

time prospecting for new advertisers. Meanwhile Kevin Dolan

Your Rockaway Garden

Container Gardening

By Alex Berkowitx

Containers are a wonderful solution to beautify your walkway, patio,

terrace, or to grow vegetables with
limited space. In fact, you can grow
an entire garden without even having
to dig a hole in your soil! From trees
to a small window box herb garden,
containers are one of the most versatile types of gardening. With my tips
and tricks for growing in containers,
you can have a beautiful and bountiful garden whether youre a novice or
a seasoned gardener.
Containers, also called planters,
can be used to grow both ornamental and edible plants. Because you
can move them around to full sun
or a shady spot, you can be in con-

trol of what youre growing. For my

clients at Sungold Design Group,
we use them as an accent around
a garden, to create a welcoming
entryway, liven up a porch or deck,
grow tomatoes on a terrace, grow
Japanese maples on a rooftop, or
arrange a few around an outdoor
seating area. Containers are one of
my favorite ways to garden.
There are three kinds of container
gardens that we can choose from.
Theres Edible (vegetables, fruits, and
herbs), Ornamental (flowers, shrubs,
small trees), and then one that I use
both in my home garden and with
clients, which is to mix it up and plant
edible and ornamental plants in the
same container. I find this way the
best bang for your buck.
Lets get started on making our
containers!
First, we need a planter. There are
so many varieties on the market:
plastic, terracotta, glazed pottery,
wood, bourbon barrels, clay, fiberglass, etc. Chose a planter that suits
your budget and your taste. Some
planter materials last longer than

others, so figure out what you need.

Second, we need to make sure we
have the proper drainage so check
for holes on the bottom of the pot. To
make sure that dirt doesnt clog the
holes, add a layer of stones, coconut
fiber, and for pots with only ornamental plants, those annoying foam
peanuts make for great drainage.
Third, buy good potting soil, and
make sure its not top soil. I like to
start with organic soil then mix
some other nutrients like bone
meal and perlite in for a boost. Be
careful not to be lured in by the
soils that promise water retention
or continuous nutrition. They can
cause more harm than good.
Fourth, make sure you have the
right lighting. Herbs and tomatoes
need full sun, certain flowers can
only tolerate the shade. I always
read the care instructions when I
buy the plant.
Fifth, make sure you water, but
not overwater! In the summer, watering everyday with a hose count
of 10 should be perfect.
Sixth, choosing what to plant.

The main rule is thriller- fillerspiller which means one tall plant
like a canna lily, one complimentary medium size plant that will
fill the space, like impatiens, and
a spiller such as a vine or trailing
flower (petunias are my favorite).
For edible plants, I have had
great results from tomatoes, peppers, blueberry bushes, herbs (lavender, basil, thyme, parsley, cilantro, chives), leafy greens like kale
and swiss chard, string beans, and
strawberries. And as always, plant
what you like to eat.
Next week Ill be talking about how
to start a Flower Cutting Garden.

Tool
Week
By Artie Wallace

Starting this week, I will be devoting the second DIYer article of

each month to tools.
Each article will cover a different tool; uses for different tools,
safety relations to specific tools,
choosing the right tool, etc. I
hope you find my Tool Week
helpful.
Angle Grinders
Hopefully it comes as no surprise to you that an angle grinder
can be used for grinding, but it
has many other uses that you may
not have thought about. With the
variety of attachments available,
an angle grinder can easily become one of the must haves for
the DIYer. I am only covering a
few uses in this article, be sure
to look online for more uses and
detailed instructions on these as
well as other uses.

Tile: As a contractor I always

had a angle grinder in with my
tile tools. With a thin diamond
blade, an angle grinder works
great for cutting the little notches and scores tile for breaking.
Angle grinders are by no means a
replacement for a tile saw, but for
those small jobs or tough angles
it is a must have.
Sharpening: With the right
touch and working on the right
angle, an angle grinder can be
used to sharpen lawnmower
blades, putting a good edge on
a shovel and sharpening most
anything with a smooth straight
edge.
Mortar: Using a thicker diamond blade, an angle grinder
can make the task of removing
mortar from around a brick (or
between stones) much easier. It
can also be used to cut thin bricks
and stones to fit that tight spot.
Metal cleaning: For that old

shovel or gardening tool that you

were about to throw out, with a
wire brush attachment an angle
grinder can clean it up to look like
new. The wire brush attachment
also makes it easier to clean rusted railings and most other metal
surfaces.
Buffing: A buffing wheel attachment for your angle grinder
is a great add-on. But beware, before you try buffing your car, try

cleaning up the old Bar-B-Que

first. It is very easy to leave swirl
marks if you dont have the right
touch.
Note: For safety reasons, it is
important that you thoroughly
research proper techniques and
safety guidelines for each use before continuing with your project.

Women of Rockaway:
Lisa Long of Rockapup

By Katie McFadden

Who runs the peninsula?

Women. A large number of
local businesses and organizations are owned and operated by females. And they deserve recognition. As part of
an ongoing series, the Rockaway Times is profiling local
female entrepreneurs each
week. This week is Lisa Long,
owner of Rockapup.
If you want to treat your
pet right, Rockapup is your local one-stop shop for all their
needs. Lisa Long, a certified

Prior to working with ani- it as an opportunity to close

With the new store, Long

little more, Long said. So she had to fight to change the poor

ly I started walking dogs to get which, she says, were poorly

against. Instead, she promotes

adoptions. On June 25, Rockapup will sponsor its biggest
adoption event yet at Riis Park
Beach Bazaar, Adopt-a-Palooza, featuring hundreds of pets
up for adoption from different
shelters across the city.
With Rockapup, Long also
takes a healthy approach to
pet care. As far as my own
health goes, Im into organic
items and through being a dog
trainer, Ive learned that its no
different for animals. When
you feed yourself garbage, it
has bad effects and the same
goes for your pet. Wellness
and preventative measures are
more cost effective than vet
bills down the line. High-end
products may seem expensive up front but youre saving on medications for an unhealthy pet later, Long said,
adding that shell be talking
more about pet wellness at the
Rockaway Wellness Expo on
Sunday, April 17 at West End
Temple..
Besides overcoming the poor
reputation of previous pet
storeowners, Long has found
competition from large, brand
name stores to be a challenge
for a small business. Small
businesses may charge an extra dollar or two and its not
because were trying to take
advantage of people. I have to
charge higher prices because
I cant buy things at the same
discount as large corporations
like Target or Petco, since stores
like that can buy larger quantities from distributors. Were
not trying to rip people off,
were trying to do the best we
can, Long says. If I could be
cheaper than Petco, I would.
However, when it comes to
whats important, Long says
small businesses are the ones
who are there during trying
times. For instance, despite
being a new store devastated
by Sandy, Rockapup coordinated with the ASPCA to offer emergency pet supplies
and services to the community right after, while Petco
remained closed for several

months. When you need us,

were here for you, Long said.
As a way to generate supplemental income to bounce
back after Sandy, Long started another business of making
Rockaway
Surfboard
Feeders, beach-themed or
personalized pet dish holders that are shaped like surfboards. When business was
horrendous, I had a panic
moment of thinking I needed
to do something else or the
brick and mortar store may go
under water after Sandy, so I
created this product that is exclusive to Rockaway, she said.
Many other local businesses, like Whits End and Umas
have gotten on board and have
them outside their establishments for pet passerbys to
have a snack or drink.
Long enjoys what she does
daily. I invest a lot of time in
this business, but if you like
what you do, its not work. Im
still excited to come here every
day. I enjoy helping people.
When someone comes in with
an issue with their pet and we
can resolve it through proper
food or supplements or training and I can give advice that
changes someones life and
they say thank you, this is
perfect, thats amazing to me.
Helping improve someones
quality of life with their pet is
really cool, she said.
To others looking to start a
business, Long says, go for it,
but educate yourself beforehand. Learning by mistake
is not optimal, but there are
many other female business
owners that would gladly advise and help you along the
way.
Rockapup, located at 145
Beach 116th Street, is open six
days a week, from 10 a.m. to
6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
on Sunday. More info about

Is Your Jewelry Making You Look Old?

By Rosemary McGuire

Have you ever looked in the

mirror and something about
you felt frumpy and old? If
it wasnt the makeup, or hair
or clothes, take a closer look.
It might just be your jewelry
thats aging you.
Recently, while rummaging
through my jewelry, I took out
a puka bead necklace I hadnt
seen in years. I knew it was
kind of dated, but thought it
might work by pairing it with
another beaded necklace.
The result couldnt have been
further from the truth.
You know how they say listen to that little voice inside
of you? Well that little voice
started out as a whisper telling me to take off the necklace
and the longer the day went
on, the louder the voice got.
At one point while looking in
a mirror, I actually heard it
scream at me, Stop wasting
time and take it off now! It
makes you look so old. Old.
Old. Old.
So I did. Ripped it off and
tossed it in the trash. As a few
of the beads scattered and
rolled around on the bathroom floor, it got me thinking.
Was my jewelry aging me?
When was the last time I updated my necklaces?
Can jewelry make you look
old? The answer? Yes. A big, resounding, wholehearted, absolutely positively yes. Mood
rings, friendship bracelets, toe
rings and lacquer earrings
from the 80s anyone?
Rockaway local and small
business owner of the online
jewelry store Trends by Meg,
Megan Rochelle agrees. Jewelry is a great way to express
yourself, says Rochelle, It
can date you, but when done
correctly its a fun, easy way to
instantly update your outfit.
We purge our closets, our
clutter or clothes. It was time
for me to do the same with
jewelry.
Getting Started:
Lay everything out in similar groups. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings etc.
Now take a good look piece

by piece and be honest. Do

you love it?
When was the last time you
wore the piece? How does it
feel when you put it on? Fabulous? Glamorous? Finished?
Then keep it. Ambivalent?
Then get creative and try
pairing it with another item in
your pile.
Still unsure?
Try wearing it out for a day. See how
you feel when youre out and
about. At the end of the day,
if youre still unsure, it may be
time to retire it, or you may
just find yourself ripping it off
and tossing it in the trash like
the 20-year-old puka beads.
If its too overwhelming, try
enlisting a friend or family
member to help. No need to
tackle everything all at once,
do bracelets one day, earrings
the next, and so on. Be easy
on yourself. If it took you
years to amass your collection, its going to take more
than a day to debride it.
Once youve cleared out
your clutter, consider investing in one or two inexpensive
trendy costume jewelry pieces.
According to Rochelle, hot
items for spring are statement
necklaces and statement earrings as well as chunky chain
necklaces, tassel necklaces
and collar necklaces. Pendants are also big this season
and layering them is a great
way to update your wardrobe. Also new on the scene
is negative space jewelry designed with empty space as a
focal point.
However, Rochelle warns,
pick only one trendy piece to
wear at a time. Wearing more
than one oversized statement
piece at the same time is a big
no.
Rochelle reminds women
that wearing jewelry well is a
balance of incorporating new
pieces while staying true to
your own sense of style. And
staying within your color
scheme with jewelry complimenting your clothes makes
for a polished look.
Wary of accessorizing with
stripes? Dont be, says Rochelle. Black and white

stripes pair well with pearl

statement necklaces while
colored stripes go well with
crystal.
Most of all, she says to have
fun. Experiment. She shares
a quote that has stuck with
her from jeweler Jennie Kwon
who once said, Jewelry has
the power to be this one little
thing that can make you feel
unique.
Some jewelry dos and
donts.
DO:
Take inventory of what you
have before you start buying
new items.
Consider enlisting a friend
for help.
Use thin chains when layering and mix a pendant or
two in.
Mix and un-match those
boxed earrings and necklace sets to create your own
style.
Be true to your own style
and preferences.
DONT:

Layer large statement pieces. Pick either statement

earrings or a necklace.
Wear too many trendy pieces at once.
Get rid of something you
may regret later. A sentimental piece should be
saved and even framed like
artwork.
Get frustrated. If its been
years since youve purged,
it may take some time to revamp your collection.
Let a trend dictate your
style. If you hate it, dont
wear it just because its in.

On The Road With Rover And Rosa

CAMBODIA: GLORIOUS
By Wild Rover

Today, we are writing from a

short flight from Vientiane (capital of Laos) to Luang Prabang,
which is supposed to be the
crown jewel of Laos. We spent a
quiet day and night in Vientiane
catching our breath after an incredible time in Cambodia that
required some digesting before
moving on.
Irish Rosa and I fell in love with
Cambodia in a way that I dont
think either of us quite expected.
We actually stayed for almost a
week, including visiting the capital of Phnom Penh, which we
hadnt planned to do originally.
The main reason to visit Cambodia is the temples and ruins.
Sometimes you read or hear
about a place so much it is impossible to live up to the hype,
which we thought might happen
with the temples, but we couldnt
have been more wrong on that.
We both went in thinking it was
all about Angkor Wat and that
the Khmer culture/empire more
or less was a flash in the pan with
Angkor Wat, an incredible, but
isolated achievement. Again, we
were quickly disabused of this
notion. The Khmer empire lasted close to 1500 years in one respect or another and in that time
built over 2,000 temples! There
are over 600 in the immediate
area around Angkor Wat alone.
The empire also covered large
parts of Thailand, Vietnam, and
Laos and remains the dominant
cultural force across parts of
Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, as well
as all of Cambodia. The sheer
wealth of the empire is obvious
everywhere you turn, from magnificent temples of sandstone
to enormous reservoir and aqueduct construction. The urban
planning alone was extremely
impressive, much of which still
functions today, including the
enormous reservoirs that bank
the Angkor temples. I would put
the Khmer a notch above the
Mayans in terms of scale and
accomplishment, which I never
would have guessed.
We saw a total of 10-12 temples
and complexes over two days,
culminating with Angkor Wat

on day two. We got to AW at 5:30

am while it was still dark, which
was surreal in and of itself, and
then watched the sunrise over
the temples, a couple of pictures
of which we have attached. Truly unforgettable and although it
was crowded, the sheer size of
the complex made it so that the
crowds didnt detract from the
otherworldly experience. Angkor Wat has the size of Teotihuacan, the ornamentation and
carvings of the Taj Mahal, and
the symmetry of the pyramids.
Although Angkor Wat was the
top, the other temples we saw
were all fascinating in their own
right, from a complex with dozens of Buddha faces on towers to
a temple with huge tress literally
growing out of the ruins (where
some of the Tomb Raider movie
was shot). Truly an epic culture
that is much under appreciated.
The next thing that struck us
was the warmth and openness of
the Cambodian people. So kind,
so welcoming, and just a great
energy. They reminded us of
outgoing Guatemalans and even
in looks and history there are
many parallels to Guatemala. Although there are many examples
of the warmth of the people we
wont bore you with that, but we
have to tell you about our guide
who we will call Siem to protect
his privacy. Great guy and very
knowledgeable with the type
of personality that you feel like
youve known him for years after
an hour. As we are a few hours
into our tour on day one we have
been talking about his life as you
do with guides in between the
historical sites. He drops a few
references to the Pol Pot regime
and the civil war within the context of the tour and as we continue to get to know each other
and he sees we are interested in
the Cambodian culture, not just
photo opportunities, he opens
up more and more. As we are
exiting the first temple he stops
to tell us more about his story
and because English is his third
language after Russian (more
on that in a minute) he stops to
tell his story and he has to start
from the top to stay organized
because thats often easier in a

different language. It turns out

his whole family was killed in
the Cambodian genocide of the
Pot regime. He escaped the killing fields because a kid whose
dad ran the fields tipped him off
and he escaped from one of the
communes never to see his family again. He hid out with a local
widow before eventually being
caught, but by this time the mass
killing of able bodied men left
the regime in need of soldiers, so
he becomes an untrained child
soldier for the Khmer Rouge
at the age of 16-17 doing nuisance raids into Vietnam. After
the Vietnamese invade he is
doing more serious soldiering
before eventually being caught
by the Vietnamese. After being
detained by the Vietnamese he
is brought into the Vietnamese
fold to fight the Khmer Rouge,
which doesnt take much convincing after what happened to
his family. After Vietnamese occupation of Cambodia firms, he
is sent to Hanoi to study in a military academy where after years
of war he asks out of military
service to become a mechanic. They accept and send him
to Moscow, where he studies
and lives for eight years before
returning after the semi-democratic elections in 1993 that returned rule to Cambodia (heavily influenced by Vietnam) where
he returns to the army to help
consolidate Cambodian independence as the country moves
on from a horrific period. Finally
in 2008 he asks the Prime Minister for an out from the army,
and after he gets rejected, he just
walks off at his wifes insistence
to become a tour guide! He says
the commander is his buddy
and he was 2nd in command so
he smoothed it over with the PM.
NBD... He only started guiding
two years ago after self teaching
all of the necessary history and
basically learning English. Oh
and hes 56 years old.
If that wasnt enough, at the
end of his story as we are listening in a combination of stunned
silence and insufficient words
of condolence, he turns into me
and starts to weep on my shoulder. At first I thought he was kid-

ding because he is such a high

energy, positive guy, I think he is
trying to lighten the mood in an
awkward way, but I look down
(hes about 55 also like Guatemalans) and hes sobbing. It only
lasts about 20 seconds before he
composes himself and we walk
on arm in arm, but it was one of
the most touching moments of
our lives. Its getting dusty on the
airplane just thinking about it.
Well, after moments like that,
we had to see Phnom Penh, the
capital thats rising from the ashes of three decades of conflict. It
was an exciting, very third world,
but on the rise city. I think the
Buddhist monks in saffron robes
on the back of motorcycles or
tuk tuks is the best logo for the
city. We went to their genocide
museum, which was in a high
school turned detention center
by the Khmer Rouge right in
the city center. We both left with
wet cheeks and an even greater
appreciation for the Cambodian spirit. On brighter notes we
did a sunset cruise on the Mekong and donated blood at the
Childrens hospital. Apparently
theres a cultural stigma against
donating blood so it was great to
do and we received much love
plus free t-shirts. What more can
ya ask for? We also donated to
the hospital, which was founded
by a Swiss doctor and has grown
to seven sites that provide free
health and accounts for 85 percent of all healthcare in Cambodia! If the spirit moves you it is
the Kantha Bopha hospital, although youll have to navigate a
crappy website to do it.
On a much lighter note, Cambodia has some good local beers
to wash the dust out of your
throat after a long day touring
with Angkor (what else) being the best of the bunch and
Cambodia beer as the peoples
champ.
Sorry for the length of this one,
but it was such an enchanting
place and powerful experience we
couldnt just hit the highlights.
More from Laos next...

BAYVIEW IS BACK

Continued from Page 3

we want to bring this back,

would you be interested?
I knew what Rob had here
before. We couldnt just let
this disappear, landlord and
co-owner Nicky Martelli said.
The rebuild began in May 2015,
with the owners paying out of
pocket for everything from the
equipment to the construction. The owners are planning
to bring back the dock so people can come by boat, but it will
take some more funds. I want
to add 200-feet of pull-up boat
slips for up to 20 boat to pull up
at a time. The goal is to have that
by Memorial Day.
Having the ability to start over,
Pisani decided to bring back a
whole new establishment, not
just in looks, but also in atmosphere. With the past restaurant, one mistake that I made
was that I kept dressing it up
more and more and it turned
into more of a catering hall to
get through the winters, so it
had a high-end menu and it lost
that vibe of being by the water,
being able to show up in shorts
and a tank. It lost that outdoor
water aspect and I didnt realize it until it was too late. When
we first started in 1999 we had
doors with portholes and a nautical theme and it felt more like a
bar. I wanted to bring that back,
Pisani said. The new Bayview

will have a more laid-back vibe.
Were going to have to figure out our identity but I want
people to be able to come by to
watch a game, enjoy tap beer
and eat some comfort food. I
want people to feel like theyre
on vacation in Broad Channel.
When you have this great view,
a good bite to eat and a frozen
drink, you cant beat that on a
90-degree day, he said.
Instead of lobster dinners, the
menu will have things like lobster mac and cheese and lobster rolls. Instead of fine cuts
of steak, the menu will feature
steak sandwiches and a variety
of burgers. With 20 appetizers,
several sandwiches, seafood
and a raw bar, theres something for everyone to enjoy. Its
a casual menu with fair prices
and I think people are going to
really like it, Pisani said.
Although the food, look and
atmosphere will be different,
Pisani says some of his former
staff members will be coming
back. We had a lot of good
employees that are returning,
which will be helpful, he said.
Some positions still need to be
filled and people are encouraged to stop by to fill out an application.
Bayview Grille & Marina, located right by the bridge at 25
Van Brunt Road, will have a private soft opening this weekend
and will be open to the public
on Tuesday, April 19. Restau-

rant hours will be 3 p.m to 9

p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with the bar
open until 2 a.m., and 12 p.m.
to 9 p.m. on Sundays. The restaurant and staff will take some
time to get back into the swing
of things, but a grand opening
celebration will be held sometime within the next few weeks.
The Bayviews comeback will
be a big positive for the community. Its another place that has
been rebuilt since Sandy and to

Page 43

see something back here feels

great. We employ several people
from Broad Channel and Rockaway, so having this back opens
up jobs, which is exciting,
Pisani said. In return, the community has been very supportive. We want to thank everyone
for all their good wishes and for
offering their help. Good wishes
are part of what keep you going,
Nicky Martelli said. Were back
from Sandy. You liked us before,
youll love us now, Anthony
Martelli said.

Good Stuff From 114 Students (Part 2)

Talented students from Mrs. Diehls writing class at PS 114 sometimes share their works with us. Enjoy!
My Dad
By Sean Hanley

Outside my small grey house

in Breezy Point, New York, on
a cool spring day, I needed
a way to get around. I was a
three-year old, blond-headed
kid and I wanted to go places. My dad announced How
about a bike? I was three and
as usual I thought he meant
his bike and I exclaimed, Are
you kidding! Im too short!
Your bike is way too big! Like
a cat in the rain I sprang away.
I was afraid of that monstrous
thing. Inside I was like a dog
with no bone to bury. Boredom towered over me like a
house. Boredom ruled me.
I played cars, watched T.V,
and played planes. Outside, I
heard happy-sounds Wow!
Wahoo! Whoa! I trudged out
like a sloth; a snail couldve
beaten me. I saw my dad; he
was having a lot of fun riding
his bike. Brave as a soldier
marching into battle I announced Ill do it! But how
do I reach the pedals? Well
this is a predicament, My dad
declared with a strange smile.
I followed the obscure smile
onto the deck and a huge
cardboard box caught my
eye. It was so big an elephant
couldve slept in it. What
could it be? A dog? No way,
my mom wont allow it. A
hippo? Nope, it smells weird
and where would it swim.
What could it be? And then
he revealed it. A shiny green
bike! At first, I was afraid but
with dads encouragement,
I hopped on. After what felt
long enough for me to grow a
beard, I zoomed around like
a stampeding bull. I did it!
I sang. Im ten years old now,
and I still remember my dads
words, Youve got to face
your fears, not fear them.
Mrs. Diehl
By Stacey Jiang

I am a girl with hair as dark

as the color of sweet dark
chocolate, I have brown eyes
that take me to see the world
every day. Math, reading, so-

cial studies, and science facts

twirl around like ballerinas
in my head. But the subject
I like the most is writing. My
favorite writing teacher has
light brown curly hair with
a voice as lovely as the birds
chirping outside my window.
She encouraged me to be a
writer. Every time she starts
teaching, I never want the period to end. She uses me as an
example sometimes, which
makes me feel special. Before
I met her, I didnt really like
writing, but now I do! Shes a
mirror that reflected me and
pulled out the real me hiding
in the corners. She brings a
bright smile to every class. She
inspires me. She makes magic
everyday by using her magic
pen and writing magical things
on the board. Many teachers
and students talk about how
intelligent she is. Because of
all her hard work with me, I am
now a bright star shining in the
night sky. Shes the one who
really inspired me, and now I
want to be a writer.
My Dad
By Charlie Kinzie

One hot August day I

trudged to the Little League
field like a soldier to battle
with the beaming sun beating down on my baseball
cap. Today was the perfect
day to play baseball with my
dad who had an extensive
knowledge of baseball, and
was quite the player in college and high school. When
we got to the baseball field
my dad taught me the perfect
batting stance to hit a good
shot to the outfield. Come
on get a good whack at it,
my dad said. When I swung
I heard a noise like a swish
or whiff because I obviously
missed the ball by a mile. Its
okay, hit it the next time. Its
only strike one, were some of
my dads words that I soaked
up in my brain. Then it happened, I swung the bat so hard
I could have cracked stone
and the ball sailed right past
my dad. Good Hit! my dad

cheerfully yelled to me. As I

rounded third base, my dad
shouted, Slide! Obediently,
I followed my dads orders.
As I slid, Safe my dad hollered out like an umpire. You
did it, were the three words
my dad said, that I will cherish forever. Now, Im eleven
and I want to be in the MLB.

These moments with my dad

not only inspired me to play
baseball but also taught me
how to cope with moments
when I strike out in life and
my head hangs low. Because
of his inspiration, I can now
hit a baseball, and I can also
hit home runs in school too.
Thanks Dad!

2016 Rockaway Little League

Starts With Bad Weather, Good Intentions

Winter-like weather descended on the first week of the 2016

season, making games and practices virtually impossible. After a
well-attended Coaches Day that
stressed the importance of positive coaching, the first games of the
season took place a week later with
the El Caribe Reds bumping off the
L. Mahoney Real Estate Athletics in
Minor Boys action.

Rockaway Little League is blessed to have scores of great coaches

as well as hundreds of supportive
parents. Still, the competitive spirit
can get the best of any adult. RLLs
goal is to teach positive life lessons
through baseball. The leagues
commitment to the Positive Coaching Alliance is a means to make sure
all adults involved with RLL demonstrate attitudes and behaviors that
set the best example for our youngsters. This commitment will be evident through pre-game pledges,
in-game sportsmanship and postgame fun throughout the year.

While the weather-delayed

games on April 10 were the first
live action of the year, RLLs official Opening Day Celebration will
take place this Saturday (April 16)
at the fields in Ft. Tilden, Gateway
NRA. Hundreds of families participate in this gala every year. It
begins with the traditional parade
at 9:00 followed by the flag-raising
ceremony. Dignitaries like RLL patron Senator Chuck Schumer often
attend. Ceremonial first pitches
follow. Councilman Eric Ulrich,
State Senator Joseph Addabbo and
Congressman Gregory Meeks have
opened the season with a strike in
the past. Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder, sponsor or the Tee Ball Royals cannot attend since the event is
held on a Saturday.
April 16 is the true opening day
for the Challenger and Tee Ball
divisions. When those games get
started, Field 5 will be opened for
food and carnival rides. (Tickets
are required for the food and rides.)
Inside the Clubhouse, the annual Chinese auction will take place
with numerous prizes from local
business and sports clubs, including New York Knicks, New York
Giants, The Wharf, Uncle Louie G,
Wish, Belle Harbor Steak House,
Blue Bungalow, Lola Star, Daltons,

Page 49

RUGBY PLAYOFFS

Come out and support the

Rockaway Fisheads as they clash
with the Danbury Madhatters in
the first round of the 2016 playoffs
this Saturday, 1 pm at Fort Tilden.
After capping off a 9-1 season in
November with a win over archrival
Brooklyn RFC, the Fish secured their
playoff spot before entering their
winter slumber. Now, the #4 seeded
boys of Rockaway have returned to

the pitch, and have been training

hard in anticipation of this bout on
the Beach with #5 Danbury. From
the moment of kick off, Rockaway
intends to offer no quarter to their
guests from the north as they defend
the Fort.
The match will be followed by
a barbeque, complete with adult
beverages. Come out for what should
be a beautiful sunny day, a great
match, and a great after-party.

Shannon Florist, All Seasons Studio,

Chrissys Photography, Perla, Lanas
Loft, Gliders and many more.
On the field this week, the El
Caribe Reds topped the Mahoney
Real Estate As 18-8. Jack Conrath pitched three solid innings
and Jayden McMillan closed out
the game. The Reds pitching was
awesome. El Caribe received solid
hitting from Nick Bendetto, Logan

World Champions Karate Center

Hosts AAU Metro Championships
The 26th Annual N.Y. Metropolitan
Karate Championships were held
Sunday, April 3, at the Aviator Sports
Center. This prestigious tournament
brought together athletes from the
Metro area, Long Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Upstate.
This tournament is necessary
to qualify for the AAU National
Tournament, which will be held
in Ft. Lauderdale this year.
The Karateka competed in
Kata (forms), Kumite (point
sparring) and Kobudo (weapons). The ages ranged from fiveyear-old beginners to 60-yearold Black Belts. The rings were
refereed by National Level referees Sensei James Esopo, Sensei Samer Hussein, Sensei Odell
Hemby and Sensei Thomas Carrano. Advanced students Donna,
Leondra, Cameron, Richard and
Tiyanna were judges in the various rings.

World Champions Karate Center Black Belt Anna Febola ran

the beginner ring. The beginner
ring was only for students who
had never been in a competition
and were partnered with others
of the same level. This made their
day less stressful within the scope
of the larger tournament around
them. The rigorous training at the
dojo prepared all the students to
succeed.

The competition cannot function without the help of the many

parents who volunteered their
time. The matches were scored at
ringside by Todd, Amy, Tori, Damian, Amanda, Sarah and Ryan.
Jun ran the EMS table, while David and Louis staffed the door
and checked registrations.
Advanced students, Lucas, Jason, Billy and Kirk expedited the
rings and gave out the medals. In

addition, the other competing Dojos (schools) helped staff the rings.
The World Champion Karate
Team garnered many gold, silver
and bronze medals in their age
and rank divisions. Just as important as each and every medal and
the effort that goes into winning
and competing, is the fact that
every single match in Traditional
Karate starts and ends with a bow
for respect to one another.
The World Champions Karate
Team is (front l-r) Quentin, Asha,
Liam, Nadia, Jadyn, Nico, (second
l-r) James, Reggie, Jayden M., Jacob, Jack, Dylan N., Maks, Calvin,
Logan (third l-r) Obdulio, Jaydon V.,
Juan, Leila, Reiner, Dylan R., Fiorella, Ellen (back l-r) Brendon, Dylan
K., Darnell, Jessica, Kaden, Patrick,
Sean and Shahid. For more information about World Champions
Karate Center, check out the Dojo at
112-20 Beach Channel Drive.
