Kapauns Men: Will resume meeting in the fall
Today and tomorrow, St. Michaels at Girard and St. Josephs at Arma will have a special
celebrant, our chief shepherd for the Wichita Diocese, the Most Rev. Carl A. Kemme. With such a
large area to cover, we dont see our bishop as often as wed like, but this weekend is special as
Bishop Kemme will administer the Sacrament of Confirmation tomorrow at the 10:00 Mass at St.
Michaels. He is celebrating Mass at both parishes and hearing confessions in addition to his
Confirmation duties.
As stated last week, Confirmation is one of our more obscure sacraments and because it will be
spotlighted this weekend, it seemed fitting to grant it more aura to further its understanding by all.
Ill begin with these words from the Acts of the Apostles: 2:1-4
When the days of Pentecost were drawing to a close, they were all together in one place. And
suddenly, there came a sound from heaven, as of a violent wind coming, and it filled the whole
house and there appeared to them parted tongues as of fire, which settled upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in foreign tongues, even as the
Holy Spirit prompted them to speak.
The mark of maturity is responsibility. All the actions of a new-born child center about himself.
It takes years before he is motivated to do for others. Gradually, he assumes more and more
responsibility as he matures. A similar growth from childhood to maturity takes place in the
supernatural life. Here, the growth is not gradual; it comes about immediately through the
sacrament of Confirmation. The Church actually was born on Good Friday, so to speak, when
Jesus died on the Cross; however, it wasnt until the Holy Spirit descended upon the Church at
Pentecost that she was truly born to the world and assumed the responsibility of bearing witness to
Christ. And now, we get to connect all of this to what Bishop Kemme will do tomorrow morning
at the Confirmation Mass. As the Church grew more responsible, so will the Christian who seeks
that closer relationship with Jesus. At baptism, he was born into a new life, but, at Confirmation,
when Bishop Kemme places his hand on the head of each person and anoints them on the
forehead with holy chrism in the form of a cross, they receive the Holy Spirit with special graces
and strength to enable them to practice their faith in a courageous manner. This is the
PENTECOST happening in our own lives, similar to what the apostles received on that First
Pentecost. We acquire the willingness to guard a treasure and share it with others, despite the
worlds ridicule.
In conclusion, I quote from the Catechism of the Catholic Church: #1304 Like Baptism
which it completes, Confirmation is given only once, for it, too, imprints on the soul an indelible
spiritual mark, which is the sign that Jesus Christ has marked a Christian with the seal of His
Spirit by clothing him with power from on high so that he may be His witness. Again, we welcome
Bishop Kemme to our Church.
