Amazon Cloud Performance Report May 2010

Introduction
This report measures how quickly files are stored (PUT) and retrieved (GET)
between an EC2 instance and S3 in the AWS cloud. We look for both the fixed and
variable costs of each operation. In future reports we will add instance types,
platforms and timeline comparisons.

Data
We present our data using file size ranges as that best shows how the values are
determined. The first data series groups files into 1KB ranges, the second series
into 10KB ranges and so forth. There are charts showing both the fixed and
variable cost for each operation.

Methodology
We tracked the number of milliseconds it takes to store and retrieve files using
JetS3T which in turn uses Commons HttpClient. Our data does not include failed
attempts.
