A Neuro-Cognitive Perspective on theProduction


and Comprehension of Discourse Coherence

Abstract. This paper analyzes the cognitive foundations of discursive coherence. Thetheoretical models that equate language with grammar and linguistic
processing with sentence processing explain discourse coherence in terms of
thelinear relations of cohesion between consecutive sentences. Against such models, this paper shows that discourse coherence cannot be interpreted in reference
to thecohesive ties between theindividual sentences. Through thediscussion of
theoretical arguments and empirical data, it is shown that coherence is not dependent on linguistic features but is rather aproperty that is processed by cognitive
systems that are not specific for language. Thehypothesis is that discourse coherence primarily concerns theorganization of thoughts rather than theorganization
of language, and that it is dependent on executive functions responsible for action
planning and monitoring.

Introduction
In this paper, we analyze apeculiar property of language: coherence of
discourse. Specifically, assuming thepoint of view of cognitive sciences,
we examine this property through thestudy of themental capacities at
the basis of its processing. This type of analysis allows us to highlight
specific aspects of theconstruction of discourse and to give more general
consideration to the nature of human verbal skills and better ways to
investigate them. In fact, through the study of the cognitive processes

that govern the construction of discourse coherence, it is possible to


show thekey role that cognitive pragmatics should have in thestudy of
thefeatures of human communication.
Discourse processing is anissue that has been ignored for along time
in cognitive sciences. The reason lies in the fact that in cognitive sciences, thehighest level of linguistic analysis is represented by grammar
(more specifically, by syntax), and theprevalent idea is that to explain
linguistic processing means to explain theprocessing of thesyntactical
features of theindividual sentence (the relationships of theinternal traits
of thesentence). Our goal in this article is to show that such aperspective
is largely unsatisfactory because it fails to account for some fundamental properties of human communication, such as those that guarantee
the contextual appropriateness of linguistic utterances as coherence of
discourse. Through thediscussion of theoretical arguments and empirical data, we show that coherence does not depend on linguistic devices
but is rather aproperty that is processed by cognitive systems involved
in theorganization of behavior in general. Specifically, our hypothesis is
that coherence is aproperty that primarily concerns theorganization of
thoughts rather than theorganization of language, and that is dependent
on executive functions responsible for action planning and monitoring.
Ahypothesis of this type has two important consequences with respect
to the classical tradition in cognitive sciences: the critique of the idea
that grammar (syntax, specifically) constitutes theessence of language
(e.g., Chomsky 1975; Pinker 1994), and calling into question the idea
that theprocessing of thesentence is theessence of language processing
tout court (cf. Crocker et al. 2001).

1. The classical model of cognitive sciences


and theprimacy of grammar
The hypothesis proposed in this paper is opposed to amodel of language
very influential in contemporary cognitive sciences whose main point
of reference is Noam Chomsky. In Chomskys model of language, it is
possible to stress two concepts that are particularly relevant to thetopics
discussed in this article: thepriority of syntax on other dimensions of language and theprimacy of thesentence on any other linguistic expressions
(e.g. Chomsky 1975). According to Chomsky, knowledge of language

coincides with knowledge of grammar and in particular with knowledge


that allows thespeaker/hearer to produce/understand thesentences (e.g.
Chomsky 1986). From this point of view, language processing coincides
with microanalysis namely, with theanalysis of theinternal traits (lexical and morpho-syntactic elements) of thesingle sentence.
Although theability to produce and understand sentences constitutes
an important part of linguistic competence, in this work, we criticize
the idea that the sentence is the essential constituent of language and
that, consequently, the phrasal processing (microanalysis) can explain
the overall processing of language. We show that processing based on
microanalysis fails to account for some fundamental aspects of language
such as the appropriateness of verbal expressions. In fact, when one
moves from thelevel of thesentence to thelevel of discourse (macroanalysis), abasic property of language emerges coherence and calls
into question the pragmatic dimension before the grammatical one
(Adornetti 2012, 2013; Cosentino et al. 2013; Ferretti, Adornetti 2011;
Ferretti et al. 2013).
Coherence can be generally defined as theconceptual organizational
aspects of discourse at thesuprasentential level (Glosser, Deser 1990).
What governs thecoherence of discourse? Theprevalent idea, especially
among linguists, is that coherence of discourse (oral or written) depends on thecohesion between pairs of consecutive sentences, namely,
on the linear relationships between the content of adjacent sentences
(e.g. Halliday, Hasan 1976; Reinhart 1980; Bublitz 2011). In atext, cohesive relationships are accomplished through grammatical and lexical
mechanisms. Grammatical cohesion includes elements such as reference, substitution, ellipses, and conjunctions; lexical cohesion is based
on repetition (repetition, synonymy, etc.) and location (co-occurrence
of lexical items). What is important to stress for the purposes of our
argument is that in this perspective, cohesion is anecessary condition
of coherence. Bublitz (2011), for example, argued that the coherence
of atext is not given except through cohesive ties because they help to
ensure the unity of the text and act as signals that the speaker offers
to thelistener to show him or her theway to follow in order to interpret theverbal utterances in acoherent way (cf. also Tanskanen 2006).
Theidea, in other words, is that discourse coherence relies on linguistic
elements and capacities.

2. The primacy of global coherence on local coherence


Although cohesive devices play animportant role in theconstruction of
discursive coherence, in our opinion, they are not anecessary condition
of coherence. Central in this regard is the distinction between global
coherence and local coherence (cf. Glosser, Deser 1990). The former is
themanner in which discourse is organized with respect to anoverall
goal, plan, theme, or topic. Agar and Hobbs (1982: 7) stated that therequirements of aglobal coherence say Given theoverall goals Iam trying
to accomplish what can Isay next that will serve them?. Thelatter refers
to the conceptual links between individual sentences or propositions
that maintain meaning in a text or discourse. According to Agar and
Hobbs (1982: 7) therequirements of alocal coherence say Given what
Ijust said, what can Isay that is related to it?. Cohesion is responsible for
local coherence. Therelevant point is to clarify whether local coherence
is anecessary condition for global coherence. From our point of view,
global coherence does not depend on thelocal; thecohesive bonds between adjacent sentences are not anecessary requirement of theoverall
coherence of thediscourse. Specifically, our hypothesis is that global coherence is independent of cohesive devices since it is aproperty related,
first of all, to theorganization of thoughts (it is theway in which thoughts
are connected to each other) rather than to theorganization of linguistic
relationships between sentences. Since cohesion is just the surface expression of adeeper level of coherence that concerns theorganizational
level of thoughts, our idea is that discursive coherence can also happen
without thehelp of linguistic elements.
One of thestrongest and most convincing arguments in support of
theidea that global coherence does not depend on thecohesive bonds
between pairs of consecutive sentences is offered by Giora (1985).
The author argued that coherence does not rely on cohesion and that
cohesion is a by-product of coherence. Central to this hypothesis is
the distinction between sentence topic and discourse topic. According
to Giora, thedifference between cohesion and coherence lies in thefact
that the former is the result of linear relationships between sentences
and is based on thenotion of sentence topic. Coherence, on theother
hand, depends on thenotion of discourse topic, alist of features shared
by thesentences of discourse that do not depend on linear relationships
between consecutive sentences. Consider thefollowing example:

a. Ibought aFord. Thecar in which President Wilson rode down theChampslyses was black. Black English has been widely discussed. Thediscussions
between thepresidents ended last week. Aweek has seven days. Every day
Ifeed my cat. Cats have four legs. Thecat is on themat (Enqvist 1978: 110
111).

In (a), the sentences are linked through the mechanism of cohesive


repetition. However, theset of sentences, despite theabundance of cohesive ties, does not constitute aunitary whole. Thereader cannot help
but judge thetext as inappropriate. As pointed out by Giora (1985: 701)
The inappropriateness [] lies in that it is not clear what they discuss.
[it] does not seem to make up a discourse interpretable as discussing
some topic. To use Enqvists (1978) words, this discourse is pseudo-coherent: thecohesive formal links that characterize thesurface level
of thetext do not adequately reflect therelationships of coherence that
underlie thetext in terms of textuality and contextuality. Consider, instead, thefollowing text:
b. Georges high pass was headed to theright. Theforward shot at once without
dribbling and made a goal. The referee declared the kick off-side (Enqvist
1978: 111).

Unlike (a), there are not cohesive ties between adjacent sentences in (b).
However, thetext is pragmatically appropriate because thetopic under
discussion is clear. These examples show that thelinear concatenation
of sentences does not guarantee theoverall coherence of thediscourse
and that it is possible to have coherent discourse even in the absence
of cohesive ties. In other words, they show that local coherence is not
anecessary condition for theglobal coherence.

3. Evidence from pathologies:


thecase of subjects with traumatic brain injury
The results of several neuroscientific and neuropsychological studies
support theidea that global coherence does not depend on theskills involved in theprocessing of individual sentences. These studies showed,
in fact, theexistence of adissociation between thecapacities at thebase of
themicroanalysis of language and thecapacities that underlie themacroanalysis (e.g. Davis et al. 1997; Marini et al. 2008). Particularly relevant to

our topic is theresearch on thediscursive capacities ofindividuals with


traumatic brain injury (TBI), which has shown that TBI subjects generally
do not present serious difficulties processing individual sentences (they
have no problems processing lexical items and grammatical aspects)
and local coherence, but they have deficits in theorganization of global
discourse (e.g., Coehlo 2002; Coehlo et al. 2012; Davis, Coehlo 2004;
Galetto et al. 2013; Hough, Barrow 2003; Marini et al. 2011; McDonald
2008). Consider, for example, thefollowing transcript of adiscourse of
aTBI patient:
c. Ihave got faults and. my biggest fault is. Ido enjoy sport. its something that
Ive always done. Ive done it all my life. Ive nothing but respect for my mother and father and. my sister. and basically sir. Ive only come to this conclusion this last two months. and. as far as Im concerned. my sister doesnt exist.
(Perkins et al. 1995: 305).

As Perkins stressed, in (c) each utterance is well formed [] However,


as apiece of discourse it lacks coherence because of its sudden inexplicable topic shifts (Perkins 2007: 16). Particularly important for thepurposes of our argument is the fact that, as pointed out by Gloser and
Deser (1990) and Hough and Barrow (2003) among others, cohesion
is minimally damaged while global coherence is severely compromised
in TBI subjects. This is evident in thefollowing snippet of conversation
discussed by Perkins (2007: 86) in which C, aman with TBI, is talking
with T, aspeech and language therapist, about trade unions.

Despite the local sequential links between trade unionsgovernment, governmentTory, Torycommunist, communismChinese/Russian communism, communismequality, equalityRoyal Family, Royal
Familytourist attraction, C shows aform of topic drift: he is unable to
monitor what has already been talked about or to relate each individual
utterance to some overall coherent plan or goal.
The results of this research led to thehypothesis that global coherence appears to be controlled by higher-order processes whereas lexical
cohesion may be driven by more automatised linguistic processes that
are not disrupted after TBI (Hough, Barrow 2003: 189). In thenext section, we explain what thehigher-order processes (disrupted in TBI) are
responsible for in thecontrol of discourse coherence.

4. Executive functions and coherence production


According to many scholars, theproblems of discourse coherence that
affect individuals with TBI are due to their deficits of executive functions caused by lesions in specific areas of thefrontal lobes (e.g. Biddle
et al. 1996; Hough, Barrow 2003; McDonald 2008). Theterm executive
functions is anumbrella term that encompasses awide range of cognitive
and behavioral skills (Alvarez, Emory 2006; Banich 2009; Barkley 2012;
Jurado, Rosselli 2007). From a general point of view, it is possible to
characterize executive functions as thehigher-order cognitive processes,
mainly mediated from the areas of the prefrontal cortex (the anterior
portion of thefrontal lobes) that are needed to guide behavior toward
agoal in nonroutine contexts and in complex and conflicting situations
(Banich 2009; Gilbert, Burgess 2008). For example, according to Lezak
(1982), executive functions allow us to formulate goals, to plan, and to
carry out theplans effectively. Welsh and Pennington (1988: 201202)
defined executive functioning as thecapacity to maintain anappropriate problem-solving set for attainment of a future goal. According to
Fuster (2008: 178), executive functions are needed to organize temporal-oriented behavior, language, and reasoning.
The general idea that emerges from theshort list of theabove definitions is that executive functions are involved in theplanning and execution of goal-oriented behaviors. Two components of executive functioning play akey role in this regard: action planning and monitoring. Action

planning is the ability to create and carry out goal-oriented behaviors


through theidentification and hierarchical organization of theelements
necessary to achieve a goal (Lezak et al. 2004). This ability involves
a conceptual (abstract) formulation stage and an execution phase (for
a discussion, cf. Morris, Ward 2005). The conceptual stage includes
processes such as the identification of the ultimate goal of the action,
the sequencing of the final goal into sub-goals, and the prediction of
theconsequences of theactions needed to achieve thesub-goals. Theexecution phase is characterized by processes such as thecarrying out of
the plan, the verification of the correct execution of each action, and
thecorrection of possible errors.
Particularly relevant to the production of discourse coherence is
thephase relative to theconceptual formulation of theplan (coherence,
as we said, is theway in which thearguments of thediscourse are organized with respect to ageneral theme or plan). Numerous studies have
shown that theprefrontal areas more clearly involved in this phase are
thedorsolateral regions (cf. Fincham et al. 2002; Srovnalova et al. 2012;
Tanji et al. 2007). In anexperiment by Crescentini and colleagues (2012),
for example, healthy individuals were subjected to functional magnetic
resonance imaging (fMRI) while performing the Tower of Hanoi test,
one of theneuropsychological tests commonly used to measure action
planning abilities. This test involves theuse of aninstrument consisting
of three pegs in which three disks of different color and size are inserted.
The subject has to move the disks in order to get the configuration
specified by theexaminer (ultimate goal) in thefewest possible moves
(sub-goals). Theresults of theexperiment have documented significant
activation in thedorsolateral prefrontal cortex during theinitial stages of
thetask, that is, during thesubjects generation and evaluation of theabstract sequences (sub-objectives) of theresponses to be put in place for
theachievement of thefinal objective.
To successfully execute theplans, aconstant monitoring of thetask in
progress is also needed. Themonitoring can be defined as the capacity
to hold abstract coded representations of events that are expected to occur, so as to mark their occurrence or non-occurrence (i.e. monitor their
relative status in relation to each other and theintended plan) (Petrides
2005: 789). This capacity, for which themain neural substrate is theright
lateral prefrontal cortex (Stuss, Alexander 2007; Vallesi, Crescentini

2011; Vallesi 2012), requires one to calibrate the effects of actions on


theenvironment, to detect errors, to enable corrective actions if there is
amismatch between thebehavioral responses (effects) and themental
representations (goals and expectations) of those responses, and to revise
thesubsequent actions. Action monitoring is, therefore, akey process in
theorganization of thetemporal behavior; without aneffective monitoring, no sequences of action could reach agoal successfully.
Numerous studies have shown that individuals with TBI usually have
problems with action planning and monitoring (cf. Duncan 1986; Humphreys, Forde 1998; Zalla et al. 2001, 2002). Because of these problems,
their behaviors appear confused and disordered; they are not able to conceptually organize and, therefore, to accomplish agoal-oriented behavior
through theexecution of aseries of action sequences. For example, Zalla
and colleagues (2001) have shown that persons with TBI with impairments in theanterior and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex have difficulty
in theformulation and evaluation of acoherently structured conceptual
plan of action, and that these difficulties are reflected in theexecution
of the corresponding behaviors. Our proposal is that the problems of
discursive coherence of TBI patients are due to their deficits of action
planning and monitoring.
In research on thespontaneous narrative skills of children and adults
with traumatic brain injury, Biddle and colleagues (1996) explicitly put
the disorders of global coherence of TBI subjects in relation to their
deficits in executive planning and monitoring. Theauthors wrote:
the narrative impairments of the population of adult and children
with TBI in this study appeared to be result of theproblems with planning, production and monitoring discourse. [] It is possible that
thedisruptions evident in thenarrative of thechildren and adults with
TBI were related less to language impairment than to difficulties with
theexecutive processes utilized in discourse production. [] In other
words, their deficits appeared less related to basic language skill deficits
that to impairment in higher order processes required for theplanning
and organization of language. (Biddle et al. 1996: 465464)

Similarly, McDonald (2008: 254) pointed out that the global coherence of text may be affected by executive disorders that impair theability
to plan and sequence behavior to meet specific goals. More recently,
Coelho and colleagues (2012) documented acausal relationship between

deficits of the cerebral areas involved in planning and deficits in discourse coherence. As we have seen, themain neural substrate of action
planning is the dorsolateral prefrontal area. The study by Coelho and
colleagues showed that TBI patients with injuries to theleft dorsolateral
prefrontal area had enormous difficulty managing theglobal coherence
of discourse. Specifically, the patients omitted critical information
and relevant details in their narratives and were not able to maintain
theoverall sense of thestory. Theresults of this research are thus important evidence in support of therole of executive processes of thefrontal
lobes in theproduction of coherent discourse.

5. Executive functions and coherence comprehension


Neuroscientific research has shown that theprefrontal areas are involved
not only in theproduction of discourse coherence but also in its comprehension (e.g., Ferstl, von Cramon 2001, 2002; Ferstl et al. 2002; Kim etal.
2012; Zalla et al. 2002). Ferstl and colleagues (2002; cf. also Ferstl, von
Cramon 2001), for example, analyzed and compared thecomprehension
of coherence of patients with lesions on theright temporal lobe, patients
with lesions on the right frontal lobe, patients with lesions on the left
frontal lobe, and patients with bifrontal lesions. In theexperiment, subjects were presented 120 pairs of sentences in which thesecond (the target) was pragmatically linked to thefirst (thecontext). Therelationship
between sentences could not be derived solely on thebasis of associative
links between content words; rather, comprehension required theuse of
general world knowledge. Each target occurred in two versions; thecohesive version contained one or two lexical items (e.g., pronouns or conjunctions) that explicitly signaled theconnection between thesentences.
In theincohesive version, these so-called cohesive ties were omitted or
replaced so that therelationship between thetwo sentences had to be
inferred based on pragmatic information alone. Theincoherent conditions were created by switching thecontext sentences of two coherent
trials. As for thecoherent conditions, thetarget sentences in theincoherent conditions appeared both in cohesive and incohesive versions. After
reading thesentence pairs, participants were asked to give anopinion on
thecoherence, indicating whether thetwo sentences were pragmatically
linked together (through ayes/no judgment). Table 1 illustrates thefour

experimental conditions. When the coherence between sentences is


only implicit that is, when there are not linguistic (cohesive) elements
that signal thepragmatic connection between consecutive sentences
thesubject, in order to comprehend, has to struggle to grasp themeaning of the sentences. For this reason, the condition most interesting
to identify the possible systems responsible for the comprehension of
coherence is represented by coherentnot cohesive items.

The results of the experiment showed that in such cases, patients


with left prefrontal lesions and bifrontal lesions had more difficulty than
others. These patients made, in fact, more mistakes than others, and
these mistakes were related mainly to thecoherentnot cohesive pairs.
According to the authors, one possible explanation for these frontal
non-aphasic language deficits is that discourse production and text

comprehension require theuse of executive functions, such as structuring, monitoring, and problem solving (Ferstl et al. 2002: 292). Theresults
of this research have been confirmed by subsequent studies conducted
in healthy subjects through neuroimaging techniques (e.g., Yarkoni et al.
2008; Siebrger et al. 2007; Kim et al. 2012; Loeches-Martn et al. 2008).

Conclusions
In this article, we analyzed some aspects of thepragmatics of language
from a cognitive point of view. Specifically, we examined the mechanisms underlying coherence, arguing that giving an account of such
a property is needed to move from the level of sentence analysis to
the level of discourse analysis (from microanalysis to macroanalysis).
Through reference to theresults of theresearch conducted on thediscursive abilities of head injury patients, we argued that theprocessing of
discursive coherence is strongly related to executive functions. From this
point of view, coherence appears to be afundamental property for both
theconceptualization (and subsequent execution) of appropriate actions
and theorganization of coherent discourse. Given theclose relationship
between theorganization of theaction and its actual execution, stressing
therole of executive functions in theprocessing of coherence is away to
emphasize theidea that language is grounded in thepragmatics of action.
Therefore, in aperspective of this kind, in which linguistic processing
is supported (in part) by thesame capacities and devices that regulate
theorganization and theexecution of actions, thecoherence of language
is aspecific case of themore general coherence of behavior.
