What is ODEFSEY?
ODEFSEY is a prescription medicine that is used to treat HIV-1
in people 12 years of age and older:
who have not received HIV-1 medicines in the past and have an amount of HIV-1 in
their blood (viral load) that is no more than 100,000 copies/mL, or
to replace their current HIV-1 medicines in people who have been on the same HIV-1
medicines for at least 6 months, have a viral load that is less than 50 copies/mL, and
have never failed past HIV-1 treatment.
It is not known if ODEFSEY is safe and effective in children under 12 years of age or who
weigh less than 77 lb (35 kg).
When used to treat HIV-1 infection, ODEFSEY may help:
Reduce the amount of HIV-1 in your blood. This is called viral load.
Increase the number of CD4+ (T) cells in your blood that help fight off other infections.
Reducing the amount of HIV-1 and increasing the CD4+ (T) cells in your blood may help
improve your immune system. This may reduce your risk of death or getting infections
that can happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections).
ODEFSEY does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. You must keep taking HIV-1
medicines to control HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses.
Ask your healthcare provider about how to prevent passing
HIV-1 to others. Do not share or re-use needles, injection equipment, or personal items
that can have blood or body fluids on them. Do not have sex without protection. Always
practice safer sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom to lower the chance of sexual
contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood.
Pregnancy registry: there is a pregnancy registry for women who take HIV-1
medicines during pregnancy. The purpose of this registry is to collect information about
the health of you and your baby. Talk with your healthcare provider about how you can
take part in this registry.
are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed if you take ODEFSEY.
You should not breastfeed if you have HIV-1 because of the risk of passing HIV-1
to your baby.
At least one of the medicines in ODEFSEY can pass to your baby in your breast milk.
It is not known if the other medicines in ODEFSEY can pass into your breast milk.
Talk with your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby.
Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription
and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Some medicines may interact with ODEFSEY. Keep a list of your medicines and show
it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine.
You can ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for a list of medicines that
interact with ODEFSEY.
Do not start a new medicine without telling your healthcare provider. Your healthcare
provider can tell you if it is safe to take ODEFSEY with other medicines.
How should I take ODEFSEY?
Take ODEFSEY exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to take it. ODEFSEY is
taken by itself (not with other HIV-1 medicines) to treat HIV-1 infection.
healthcare provider. Stay under a healthcare providers care when taking ODEFSEY.
When your ODEFSEY supply starts to run low, get more from your healthcare provider
or pharmacy. This is very important because the amount of virus in your blood may
increase if the medicine is stopped for even a short time. The virus may develop
resistance to ODEFSEY and become harder to treat.

A federal appeals court on Tuesday
ruled in favor of a transgender student
who sued his Virginia school district over
its policy that bars him from using the
boys restroom or locker room.
The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in
Richmond issued its ruling in the case that
Gavin Grimm brought against the Gloucester
County School Board over its policy.
The Gloucester County High School
student alleges the regulation violates
Title IX of the U.S. Education Amendments
of 1972, which prohibits schools from
receiving funds from discriminating on
the basis of sex. Grimm also claims the
policy is unconstitutional under the 14th
Amendments Equal Protection Clause.
The 4th Circuit in January heard oral
arguments in Grimms case. It was the rst
time a federal appeals court considered
the question of whether Title IX allows
trans students to use facilities that are
consistent with their gender identity.
I feel so relieved and vindicated by
the courts ruling. said Grimm in a press
release the American Civil Liberties Union
released after the 4th Circuit announcedits
decision. Todays decision gives me hope
that my ght will help other kids avoid
discriminatory treatment at school.
The Justice Department argued in the
Grimm case that Title IX requires school
districts to allow trans students to use
restrooms that correspond totheir gender
identity. The Department of Educations
Oce of the General Council also led a
brief in support of the trans student.
Todays Fourth Circuit decision is a
vindication for Gavin and a reinforcement
of the Department of Educations policy.
said Joshua Block, a senior sta attorney
at the ACLU Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and
Transgender Project, in a press release.
With this decision, we hope that schools
and legislators will nally get the message
that excluding transgender kids from the
restrooms is unlawful sex discrimination.
FCPS Pride, a group that represents
LGBT employees of the Fairfax County
School District, in a statement said its
members are heartened by the 4th
Circuits ruling. The Northern Virginia
Chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight
Education Network noted it strongly
supports the decision.
This case comes down to the simple
principle that transgender students, like
all students, should have the opportunity
to go to school, get an education, and
be treated fairly, said Transgender Law
Center Executive Director Kris Hayashi

Throughout my 32 years of heroin addiction, HIV treatment wasnt a real priority. But after getting clean in rehab,
I found hope and have been on HIV treatment ever since. Now that Im living a healthy life, I have the strength and
passion to help others as an HIV testing counselor. Ive been where they are. So when newly diagnosed people see
what treatment has done for me, its the hope they need at a critical time. Now, as a musician and Sunday school
teacher, Im able to reach out to my community and share the benefits of my experience.

Venezuelan artivist
ghts homophobia
AMHERST, Mass. A self-described gay artivist from Venezuela is using his
art to ght homophobia and other forms of discrimination.
Daniel Arzola is behind the Im Not a Joke campaign, which features a series
of 50 posters that contain a sentence and a digital illustration.
The campaign known as No soy tu chiste in Spanish has appeared
in the U.S., Venezuela, Brazil, Australia, Uganda, Russia and two dozen other
countries around the world. Arzolas posters have also been translated into
English, Portuguese and 18 other languages.
Its about being dierent, Arzola told the Washington Blade on April 14 during
an interview at Amherst College where an LGBT student group had invited him
to speak.
Katy Perry selected several of Arzolas posters for Madonnas Art for Freedom,
a project for which she is a guest curator.
Arzola told the Blade that his life changed when Madonna tweeted a picture
of one of them on Oct. 8, 2013.
At that moment Im Not a Joke was not only for activists, said Arzola. I
received a lot of interview (requests) from a lot of countries. And the people from
Venezuela who hate me knew my work because Madonna made that tweet.
Its a little clich but Madonna changed my life, he added.
Arzola, 26, grew up in Maracay, a city that is roughly 70 miles south southwest
of the Venezuelan capital of Caracas.
Arzola, who has an older brother, told the Blade that he was a very shy and
lonely child. He said that he used art to communicate with other people.
If I liked you, I preferred to give you than to talk to you, said Arzola.
Arzola said he came out to his mother when he was 5, telling her that he liked
a boy in his kindergarten class.
I told her and she beat me, said Arzola.
Arzola told the Blade that his mother, who is a teacher, is not homophobic
anymore. He said she now wears a t-shirt that promotes his art in her classroom.
Shes like my biggest fan all the time, said Arzola.
Arzola said that three of his neighbors attacked him when he was 15.
He told the Blade that they took o his pants and shoes before tying him to
a telephone poll with cables. Arzola said he was able to escape when one of his
attackers tried to nd gasoline to set him on re.
He told the Blade that his assailants destroyed all of his drawings.
They tried to burn me alive because thats the way that some people in
Venezuela react to the dierences in another person, Arzola told the Blade. Its
not only if youre gay.
Arzola said he was unable to draw for the next six years until one day I understood
that my story is not the only story and I had the luck to escape and survive. He told
the Blade that an 18-year-old man from Maracay who was attacked because of his
sexual orientation suered burns over nearly 50 percent of his body.
Theres a lot of people burning people alive or hurting other people in
Venezuela for being gay, said Arzola.
The U.N. Oce on Drugs and Crime notes that Venezuela has one of the worlds
highest homicide rates. A deepening economic crisis has caused a shortage of
basic goods, triple-digit ination and growing political and social instability.
Tamara Adrin, a Caracas lawyer who is a member of Popular Will, a leftleaning party, in December became the rst openly trans person elected to the
Venezuelan National Assembly. Anti-LGBT violence and discrimination remains
pervasive in the South American country in spite of this historic election.
Arzola, who studied graphic design and art in Venezuela, told the Blade that
he wanted to use art as a way to challenge anti-gay violence and homophobia
in his homeland.
This is the way that artivism burns in my head, he said. I need to ght violence
with other things and in Venezuela being gay is always in the media. People
laugh about being LGBT, so I was wondering (about) when we start to laugh
about tragedy, about the pain of others. In Venezuela people are always saying
that, Were so cool because we nd a joke in everything. But that everything
sometimes includes the pain of others.
Thats where the name Im Not a Joke comes in, added Arzola. I want to talk
with people like you and me, so Im not your joke. Im not a joke.

The Attorney Generals court lings
as of this week have not responded

A spokesperson for U.S. District

he was expected to rule on the motion
without calling a hearing.
Lillys attorney, Sameera Ali of the D.C.

would consider answering questions
about the lawsuit submitted by the

Wednesday.
A police source who was assigned to
the Fourth District during part of Lillys
tenure there disputed Lillys allegations,
saying that Lilly had a reputation for
odd behavior and that any ridicule or
teasing he may have encountered had
nothing to do with his sexual orientation.
The source, who spoke on condition of

was not authorized to speak to the media,
said Lilly also had a reputation of not
adequately carrying out his police duties.
The lawsuit doesnt ring true, the
source said. He had a habit of not telling

The lawsuit says that prior to becoming
a police ocer Lilly had been previously
treated for Obsessive Compulsive

No one should be surprised Hillary Clinton won the New York primary. She was

Creative storage
Your conventional storage options will
only get you so far in a compact kitchen.
Stretch your concept of storage to open
up a world of new possibilities.
Wall-mounted magnetic units can be
a great place to store knives, pots and
pans, freeing up limited cabinet space.
Corkboard added to the backs of pantry
and cupboard doors is ideal for hanging
light utensils, recipes and notes. Shelving
can be built under kitchen tables and
kitchen islands. The possibilities are
endless.
For happier cooking, give your compact
kitchen a functional makeover.

MICHAEL BENTO
By JOEY DiGULIELMO
joeyd@washblade.com
Since its inception 28 years ago, Food & Friends has provided more than 19
million meals to about 28,700 individuals ghting HIV/AIDS, cancer and other
life-challenging illnesses free of charge in the D.C. Metro area.
Its signature event Dining Out for Life is now in its 28th year and will
be held Thursday, April 28 with about 65 area restaurants having pledged
to contribute anywhere from 25-110 percent of their proceeds that day to
Food & Friends. Ristorante Tosca (1112 F St., N.W.) and Annies Paramount
Steakhouse (1609 17th St., N.W.) are each giving 100 percent. And gay-owned
Freddies Beach Bar (555 23rd St., S. Arlington, Va.) is giving 110 percent.
Last year, the event raised more than $200,000. A full list of participating
restaurants is at foodandfriends.org/dol.
Michael Bento has been involved with Food & Friends since it started in 1987.
Hes been a volunteer and donor and has been on the board for six years.
Food & Friends began in crisis when the LGBT community organized to
provide meals to our brothers and sisters with AIDS who were literally
starving because health care workers wouldnt bring them meals and family
had abandoned them, says the 55-year-old Tiverton, R.I., native. And while
HIV/AIDS will always be core to our mission, today more than half of our
clients have cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. The LGBT community
built Food & Friends and its been our gift to the entire community.
Bento plans to dine at Thally (1316 9th St., N.W.) in Shaw that evening. Hes
been in Washington since 1979 when he arrived as a freshman at Georgetown
University. He works by day at ENGAGE Strategies, his own marketing and
communications company.
Hes single and lives in Crestwood. Bento enjoys travel, cooking and home
renovation in his free time.

MICHAEL,
Is it possible to fall back in love with
someone after youve lost interest?
Jean and I met 12 years ago in our
freshman year at a campus lesbian
group. Weve been through a lot together:
coming out to our families, getting
married in Massachusetts, ghting for
equality and social justice, and the last
few years building a life in DC.
But we are both really dierent from
who we were when we met. Jean has
become conventional.
Im not interested in pop culture, in
parenthood (now at the top of Jeans
list due to biological clock issues), in the
endless oce politics of her job or in
pretty much everything else she likes to
focus on. I have a cool job that takes me
all over the world and I just feel like Ive
moved beyond Jean and our life.
Im guilty of not saying any of this to
Jean because I dont want to hurt her
feelings.
Im worried that if I leave her, shell
be alone. I know shed hate that and I
worry she might never meet someone
with whom she could have a better
connection. I do care about her and want
her to have a good future.
We were so proud and happy when we
got married and we were uber involved in
the marriage equality movement. I know
I made vows for life, but now I feel like I
obligated myself to a boring marriage
that I dont want to be in. While part of
me hopes that my feelings can change,
mostly I want to be done and move on.
MICHAEL REPLIES:
When you married Jean, did you think
that you would never face challenges?
Being in a committed relationship
means building a life with someone
who is dierent from you in major ways,
who keeps changing in unpredictable
directions, just as you change. Were
talking one challenge after another,
guaranteed.

Washington Prodigy players AISHA SANDIDGE, left, and BUKOLA LANDIS-AINA, on the eld at the
game against the Baltimore Nighthawks last weekend which they won 14-0.
players.
Playing football is a great stress
reliever for me, Sandidge says. I want
to challenge myself to be a better athlete
and a better person.
Veteran player Bukola Landis-Aina is
one of the original players on the team
and isnt looking to retire anytime soon.
There are too many things about the
game that are still keeping her engaged.
When I am playing, I feel like there is
nothing else going on in the world, LandisAina says. If I got stagnant, I would be less
interested but I am still getting better.
Born in Philadelphia, Landis-Aina grew
up playing basketball, volleyball and
softball. Her parents ended her sports
participation in high school in hopes that
she would make it to the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology.
She more than made it. Landis-Aina
completed her degree in chemical
engineering at MIT while being a
member of the varsity track & eld team
specializing in shot put and the hammer
throw. She followed that up with a law
degree from New York University.
After moving to D.C. in 2006 to work
in patent litigation, Landis-Aina joined
a co-ed ag football league, segued to a
womens league and then to full-contact
football. She spent two-and-a-half years
with the D.C. Divas and one year with the
Baltimore Nighthawks until the Prodigy
was formed in 2012. She is also still
playing ag football.
Playing for me is all about physically
pushing myself as an athlete, Landis-Aina
says. I also love the team camaraderie and
the feeling of having my teammates backs.
Landis-Aina, who plays center and multiple
oensive line positions, was a captain last
year and enjoys the responsibilities of being
one of the veteran players.
I feel that need to step up, be on time,
be a leader in drills, you know, the front
of the line, Landis-Aina says. I want to be
there to uplift my teammates.
