Acela primary up next

after Clinton, Trump
triumph in N.Y.
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
After dominating wins by Hillary Clinton
and Donald Trump in the New York
primary, their competitors are looking to
the upcoming Acela primary on Tuesday
which consists of Maryland, Delaware,
Rhode Island, Connecticut and Pennsylvania
to dig themselves out of the hole of
delegates, although the trajectory of the
races seemsunlikely to change.
The Acela primary, so named because of
the train service connecting the states, will
yield 409 delegates for Democrats and 172

for Republicans, the third greatest number

of delegates on a single day this primary
season after Super Tuesday and MiniTuesday.
After a 16-point loss for Sen. Bernie
Sanders (I-Vt.) in New Yorks Democratic
primary, hell need unexpected wins in the
upcoming states, and by large margins,
to overtake Clinton in securing the 2,383
delegates needed for the Democratic
nomination.
On the Republican side, the loss by Sen.
Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in New York made it
mathematically impossible for him to
obtain the Republican nomination outright
a situation that was already the case for
Ohio Gov. John Kasich. The remaining issue
is whether Trump will win a total of 1,237
delegates to win the nomination on the rst

including the placement of AIDS stickers on his locker.
The lawsuit names the city and the MPD as

of discriminating against him on the basis of his
sexual orientation and gender.
It says the harassment and discrimination against
Lilly began in December 2010 when without Plainti

It says the alleged harassment escalated in January

Brief Summary of Patient Information

about ODEFSEY
ODEFSEY (oh-DEF-see)
(emtricitabine, rilpivirine and tenofovir alafenamide) tablets
Important: Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist about medicines that
should not be taken with ODEFSEY.
There may be new information about ODEFSEY. This information is only a summary
and does not take the place of talking with your healthcare provider about your medical
condition or treatment.
What is the most important information
I should know about ODEFSEY?
ODEFSEY can cause serious side effects, including:
Build-up of lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis). Lactic acidosis may happen
in some people who take ODEFSEY or similar medicines. Lactic acidosis is a serious
medical emergency that can lead to death. Lactic acidosis can be hard to identify
early, because the symptoms could seem like symptoms of other health problems.
Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any of the following
symptoms which could be signs of lactic acidosis:
feel very weak or tired
have unusual (not normal) muscle pain
have trouble breathing
have stomach pain with nausea or vomiting
feel cold, especially in your arms and legs
feel dizzy or lightheaded
have a fast or irregular heartbeat
Severe liver problems. Severe liver problems may happen in people who take ODEFSEY.
In some cases, these liver problems can lead to death. Your liver may become large and
you may develop fat in your liver. Call your healthcare provider right away if you
get any of the following symptoms of liver problems:
your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice)
dark tea-colored urine
light-colored bowel movements (stools)
loss of appetite
nausea
pain, aching, or tenderness on the right side of your stomach area
You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or severe liver problems if you
are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking ODEFSEY or a similar
medicine for a long time.
Worsening of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. ODEFSEY is not approved to treat
HBV. If you have HBV and take ODEFSEY, your HBV may get worse (flare-up) if you stop
taking ODEFSEY. A flare-up is when your HBV infection suddenly returns in a worse
way than before.
Do not run out of ODEFSEY. Refill your prescription or talk to your healthcare
provider before your ODEFSEY is all gone.
Do not stop taking ODEFSEY without first talking to your healthcare provider.
If you stop taking ODEFSEY, your healthcare provider will need to check your
health often and do blood tests regularly for several months to check your HBV
infection. Tell your healthcare provider about any new or unusual symptoms you
may have after you stop taking ODEFSEY.

What is ODEFSEY?
ODEFSEY is a prescription medicine that is used to treat HIV-1
in people 12 years of age and older:
who have not received HIV-1 medicines in the past and have an amount of HIV-1 in
their blood (viral load) that is no more than 100,000 copies/mL, or
to replace their current HIV-1 medicines in people who have been on the same HIV-1
medicines for at least 6 months, have a viral load that is less than 50 copies/mL, and
have never failed past HIV-1 treatment.
It is not known if ODEFSEY is safe and effective in children under 12 years of age or who
weigh less than 77 lb (35 kg).
When used to treat HIV-1 infection, ODEFSEY may help:
Reduce the amount of HIV-1 in your blood. This is called viral load.
Increase the number of CD4+ (T) cells in your blood that help fight off other infections.
Reducing the amount of HIV-1 and increasing the CD4+ (T) cells in your blood may help
improve your immune system. This may reduce your risk of death or getting infections
that can happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections).
ODEFSEY does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. You must keep taking HIV-1
medicines to control HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses.
Ask your healthcare provider about how to prevent passing
HIV-1 to others. Do not share or re-use needles, injection equipment, or personal items
that can have blood or body fluids on them. Do not have sex without protection. Always
practice safer sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom to lower the chance of sexual
contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood.

Who should not take ODEFSEY?

Do not take ODEFSEY if you also take a medicine that contains:
carbamazepine (Carbatrol, Epitol, Equetro, Tegretol, Tegretol-XR, Teril)
dexamethasone (Ozurdex, Maxidex, Decadron, BaycadronTM)
dexlansoprazole (Dexilant)
esomeprazole (Nexium, Vimovo)
lansoprazole (Prevacid)
omeprazole (Prilosec, Zegerid)
oxcarbazepine (Trileptal)
pantoprazole sodium (Protonix)
phenobarbital (Luminal)
phenytoin (Dilantin, Dilantin-125, Phenytek)
rabeprazole (Aciphex)
rifampin (Rifadin, Rifamate, Rifater , Rimactane)
rifapentine (Priftin)
the herb St. Johns wort or a product that contains St. Johns wort

What should I tell my healthcare provider

before taking ODEFSEY?
Before taking ODEFSEY, tell your healthcare provider if you:
have liver problems including hepatitis B or C virus infection
have kidney and bone problems
have had depression or suicidal thoughts
have any other medical conditions
are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if ODEFSEY can harm your
unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you become pregnant while taking ODEFSEY.

medicines during pregnancy. The purpose of this registry is to collect information about
the health of you and your baby. Talk with your healthcare provider about how you can
take part in this registry.
are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed if you take ODEFSEY.
You should not breastfeed if you have HIV-1 because of the risk of passing HIV-1
to your baby.
At least one of the medicines in ODEFSEY can pass to your baby in your breast milk.
It is not known if the other medicines in ODEFSEY can pass into your breast milk.
Talk with your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby.
Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription
and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Some medicines may interact with ODEFSEY. Keep a list of your medicines and show
it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist when you get a new medicine.
You can ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for a list of medicines that
interact with ODEFSEY.
Do not start a new medicine without telling your healthcare provider. Your healthcare
provider can tell you if it is safe to take ODEFSEY with other medicines.
How should I take ODEFSEY?
Take ODEFSEY exactly as your healthcare provider tells you to take it. ODEFSEY is

taken by itself (not with other HIV-1 medicines) to treat HIV-1 infection.

Take ODEFSEY 1 time each day with a meal.

Do not change your dose or stop taking ODEFSEY without first talking with your

healthcare provider. Stay under a healthcare providers care when taking ODEFSEY.

Do not miss a dose of ODEFSEY.

If you take too much ODEFSEY, call your healthcare provider or go to the nearest

hospital emergency room right away.

When your ODEFSEY supply starts to run low, get more from your healthcare provider

or pharmacy. This is very important because the amount of virus in your blood may
increase if the medicine is stopped for even a short time. The virus may develop
resistance to ODEFSEY and become harder to treat.

What are the possible side effects of ODEFSEY?

ODEFSEY may cause serious side effects, including:
See What is the most important information I should know about ODEFSEY?
Severe skin rash and allergic reactions. Skin rash is a common side effect of
ODEFSEY. Rash can be serious. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get a
rash. In some cases, rash and allergic reaction may need to be treated in a hospital.
If you get a rash with any of the following symptoms, stop taking ODEFSEY and
call your healthcare provider right away:
fever
skin blisters
mouth sores
redness or swelling of the eyes (conjunctivitis)
swelling of the face, lips, mouth or throat
trouble breathing or swallowing
pain on the right side of the stomach (abdominal) area
dark tea-colored urine

Depression or mood changes. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have

any of the following symptoms:

feel sad or hopeless
feel anxious or restless
have thoughts of hurting yourself (suicide) or have tried to hurt yourself
Change in liver enzymes. People with a history of hepatitis B or C virus infection
or who have certain liver enzyme changes may have an increased risk of developing
new or worsening liver problems during treatment with ODEFSEY. Liver problems
can also happen during treatment with ODEFSEY in people without a history of liver
disease. Your healthcare provider may need to do tests to check your liver enzymes
before and during treatment with ODEFSEY.
Changes in body fat can happen in people who take HIV-1 medicine. These
changes may include increased amount of fat in the upper back and neck (buffalo
hump), breast, and around the middle of your body (trunk). Loss of fat from the legs,
arms and face may also happen. The exact cause and long-term health effects of
these conditions are not known.
Changes in your immune system (Immune Reconstitution Syndrome) can happen
when you start taking HIV-1 medicines. Your immune system may get stronger and
begin to fight infections that have been hidden in your body for a long time. Tell your
healthcare provider right away if you start having any new symptoms after starting
your HIV-1 medicine.
New or worse kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare
provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys before you start and
while you are taking ODEFSEY. Your healthcare provider may tell you to stop taking
ODEFSEY if you develop new or worse kidney problems.
Bone problems can happen in some people who take ODEFSEY. Bone problems
may include bone pain, softening or thinning (which may lead to fractures). Your
healthcare provider may need to do tests to check your bones.
The most common side effects of rilpivirine, one of the medicines in ODEFSEY, are
depression, trouble sleeping (insomnia), and headache.
The most common side effect of emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide, two of
the medicines in ODEFSEY, is nausea.
Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or that
does not go away.
These are not all the possible side effects of ODEFSEY. For more information, ask
your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to
FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
This Brief Summary summarizes the most important information about ODEFSEY. If
you would like more information, talk with your healthcare provider. You can ask your
healthcare provider or pharmacist for information about ODEFSEY that is written for
health professionals.

Federal court rules in favor of Va. trans student

Grimm challenged school
districts restroom policy

The sponsor of Tennessees so-called

papers to pee bill withdrew it earlier
this week amid concerns that the state
could lose federal funding. The South
Dakota House of Representatives last
month failed to override Gov. Dennis
Daugaards veto of a measure that would

By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
A federal appeals court on Tuesday
ruled in favor of a transgender student
who sued his Virginia school district over
its policy that bars him from using the
boys restroom or locker room.
The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in
Richmond issued its ruling in the case that
Gavin Grimm brought against the Gloucester
County School Board over its policy.
The Gloucester County High School
student alleges the regulation violates
Title IX of the U.S. Education Amendments
of 1972, which prohibits schools from
receiving funds from discriminating on
the basis of sex. Grimm also claims the
policy is unconstitutional under the 14th
Amendments Equal Protection Clause.
The 4th Circuit in January heard oral
arguments in Grimms case. It was the rst
time a federal appeals court considered
the question of whether Title IX allows
trans students to use facilities that are
consistent with their gender identity.
I feel so relieved and vindicated by
the courts ruling. said Grimm in a press
release the American Civil Liberties Union
released after the 4th Circuit announcedits
decision. Todays decision gives me hope
that my ght will help other kids avoid
discriminatory treatment at school.
The Justice Department argued in the
Grimm case that Title IX requires school
districts to allow trans students to use
restrooms that correspond totheir gender
identity. The Department of Educations
Oce of the General Council also led a
brief in support of the trans student.
Todays Fourth Circuit decision is a
vindication for Gavin and a reinforcement
of the Department of Educations policy.
said Joshua Block, a senior sta attorney
at the ACLU Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and
Transgender Project, in a press release.
With this decision, we hope that schools
and legislators will nally get the message
that excluding transgender kids from the
restrooms is unlawful sex discrimination.
FCPS Pride, a group that represents
LGBT employees of the Fairfax County
School District, in a statement said its
members are heartened by the 4th
Circuits ruling. The Northern Virginia
Chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight
Education Network noted it strongly
supports the decision.
This case comes down to the simple
principle that transgender students, like
all students, should have the opportunity
to go to school, get an education, and
be treated fairly, said Transgender Law
Center Executive Director Kris Hayashi

consistent with their gender identity.

A North Carolina law prohibiting trans
people from using public restrooms that
are consistent with their gender identity
has sparked widespread outrage across
the country.
The 4th Circuit encompasses the Tar
Heel State along with Virginia, Maryland,
South Carolina and West Virginia.

GAVIN GRIMM prevailed in a decision this

week.

in a press release that Lambda Legal

released. Todays ruling sets a legal
precedent conrming what the federal
government has made clear again and
again: Schools cannot ban students from
using the restroom that matches the
gender they live as every day.
U.S. District Judge Robert Doumar last July
said the Gloucester County School Districts
policy does not violate Title IX. He later
rejected Grimms request for a preliminary
injunction that would have allowed him to
use the boys restroom and locker room at
Gloucester County High School as his case
proceeds through the courts.
The 4th Circuit in its decision orders the
lower court to rule on the injunction.
The court today opined that the case
should go back to the lower court for that
judge to determine which denition of
sex should be enforced in our schools, the
one found in an advisory letter from the
Obama administration, or the one used
by the Gloucester school board thats
based on actual science and reality, said
Family Foundation of Virginia President
Victoria Cobb in a statement.
A society cannot function properly
without basic, social norms like male and
female, she added. The social chaos
that would ensue from ignoring biological
reality will inevitably bring tremendous
harm to our children and limit freedom,
not expand it.
The 4th Circuit decision comes against
the backdrop of a national debate over
trans peoples ability to access restrooms
and other public facilities that are
consistent with their gender identity.

Gay man settles lawsuit

against Library of Congress
Former employee alleged
unlawful dismissal
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
With no public notice, a gay man last
December agreed to settle a potentially
groundbreaking gay rights lawsuit he led
in 2012 accusing the Library of Congress
of violating the U.S. Civil Rights Act of
1964 by ring him because of his sexual
orientation and gender.
A document led in the U.S. District
Court for the District of Columbia on Dec.
8, 2015, says former Library of Congress
management analyst Peter TerVeer,
33, and representatives of the library
agreed that TerVeer would ask the court
to dismiss the case in exchange for a
payment of $235,000.
This payment is in full and nal
satisfaction of all of plaintis claims in
this case, according to an 11-page Joint
Stipulation of Settlement and Dismissal
document, which is part of the courts
public records.
TerVeer and government attorneys
representing the library jointly drafted
the stipulation document. U.S. District
Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly signed
the document three days later when she
dismissed the case on Dec. 11.
Although TerVeers attorneys called two
news conferences to announce the ling
of his lawsuit in August 2012, no public
announcement and no known media
coverage accompanied the decision to
settle the case in December.
[T]his stipulation is not intended
and shall not be deemed an admission
by either party of the merit or lack of
merit of the opposing partys claims and
defenses, the document states.
Without limiting the generality of
the foregoing, this stipulation does not
constitute, and shall not be construed as,
an admission that defendant, the agency,
or any of the agencys present or former
employees or agents violated any of
plaintis rights or any laws or regulations,
or as an admission of any contested fact
alleged by plainti in connection with this
case or otherwise, it says.
TerVeer charged in his lawsuit that
his supervisor, John Mech, subjected
him to a hostile work environment
after discovering he was gay by, among
other things, repeatedly quoting biblical
passages condemning homosexuality
during work-related oce conversations.
The lawsuit says library ocials
denied TerVeers repeated requests to
be transferred to another assignment in

an oce not under Mechs supervision.

It says Mech, meanwhile, gave him work
assignments he knew TerVeer wasnt
trained for in a thinly veiled eort to
set him up to fail and receive negative
performance reviews.
The stress caused by the hostile work
environment prompted TerVeers doctor
to advise him to take an extended
medical leave, the lawsuit says. It says
that although library ocials agreed to
his request for disability leave he was
red after his leave time expired and he
did not return to work.
The lawsuit called for the Library of
Congress to reinstate TerVeer to his job,
provide him with back pay, compensatory
and punitive damages for emotional
distress, and an order prohibiting Mech
from harassing and discriminating
against him.
A Library of Congress spokesperson
declined to comment on the lawsuits
allegations at the time it was led.
Gay rights attorneys considered the
case important because a ruling arming
that anti-gay employment discrimination
is a form of sex discrimination and is
covered under the famed 1964 Civil Rights
Act, as TerVeer maintained in his lawsuit,
could potentially lead to full employment
non-discrimination
protection
for
lesbians and gay men nationwide.
Jon Davidson, national legal director of
the LGBT litigation group Lambda Legal,
which led a friend of the court brief in
support of TerVeers lawsuit, said the
settlement eliminates any chance of an
appeals court setting a legal precedent
in the case conrming that the 1964 Civil
Rights Act covers gays and lesbians.

Schilling posts anti-trans meme

BOSTON Former Red Sox pitcher Curt
Schilling on April 18 posted a picture to his
Facebook page that appeared to criticize eorts
to allow transgender people to use restrooms
consistent with their gender identity.
The Boston Globe reported that Schilling,
who is an ESPN analyst, posted a meme that
showed a man wearing a wig, a ripped shirt
and stockings and holding a handbag. The
picture contained the message: Let him in! To
the restroom with your daughter or else youre
a narrow minded, judgmental, unloving, racist
bigot who needs to die!!!
The Boston Globe said that the former Red
Sox pitcher has deleted the post.
An ESPN spokesperson told the Boston

reviewing it. The Human Rights Campaign is
among the organizations that have criticized
Schilling over the post.
Curt Schilling demonstrated a disgusting view of trans people in a Facebook
post yesterday, wrote Cyd Zeigler, Jr., co-founder of Outsports.com, on April 19.
Given ESPNs long largely positive history with the LGBT community, he has to
be red over this.
Schilling defended his post.
This latest brew ha ha is beyond hilarious, he wrote on his blog. I didnt post
that ugly looking picture. I made a comment about the basic functionality of
mens and womens restrooms, period.

Man sentenced for Islan Nettles murder

NEW YORK A Manhattan judge on April 19 sentenced a man to 12 years in
prison for beating a transgender woman to death in 2013.
The New York Times reported that James Dixon admitted earlier this month
in a plea deal with prosecutors that he attacked Islan Nettles on a Harlem street
on Aug. 17, 2013.
Nettles died from her injuries ve days later. Dixon pleaded guilty to
manslaughter before his trial was to have begun.
The New York Times reported that Nettles mother, Delores Nettles, told the
court before state Supreme Court Justice Daniel P. Conviser sentenced Dixon
that the sentence was not enough.
As far as James Dixon, I would hate you, I would hate you for the rest of your
life, Delores Nettles told Dixon through tears as Gay City News reported. I hope
you die, I hope you rot.
Islan Nettles death sparked outrage among LGBT rights advocates in New
York and across the country.

Mass. guv booed from LGBT event stage

BOSTON Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker abruptly left the stage at an
LGBT networking event on April 13 after members of the audience challenged
him over his refusal to speak in support of a transgender rights bill.
The Boston Globe reported that Baker had been speaking at a networking
event that Boston Spirit magazine organized at a Boston hotel. The newspaper
said that audience members booed the Republican governor and chanted
sign the bill that would ban discrimination against trans people in public
accommodations.
Governor Baker concluded his speech where he reiterated his belief that no
one in Massachusetts should be discriminated against, praised attendees for
their courage and urged the transgender community to continue to advocate for
their beliefs, said Bakers spokesperson in a statement released to the Boston
Globe after the event.
A state law that bans anti-trans discrimination in employment, housing and
credit took eect in 2011. The Massachusetts Senate is expected to consider
a measure that would add public accommodations to the statute next month.

McCrory deant over

N.C. anti-LGBT law
Court ruling delivers
blow to measure
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Despite snowballing opposition to
his states recently enacted anti-LGBT
law, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory
remains deant and continues to defend
the measure as a means to prevent
government overreach.
McCrory defended House Bill 2
which has garnered national headlines
as LGBT advocates and business leaders
continue to call for repeal during an
interview Sunday with NBCs Chuck Todd
on Meet the Press.
The city of Charlotte passed a
bathroom ordinance mandate on every
private sector employer in Charlotte,
North Carolina, one of the largest, 15th,
16th-largest cities in the United States
of America, McCrory said. And I think
thats government overreach. Its not
governments business to tell the private
sector what their bathroom, locker room,
or shower practices should be. Not only
the private business, but also the YMCA
and other non-prot organizations.
Signed by McCrory after the North
Carolina Legislature approved the
measure with only a single day of
debate, House Bill 2 undoes all proLGBT ordinances in North Carolina,
including the recently approved one in
Charlotte, and prohibits transgender
people from using the public restroom
in schools or government buildings
consistent with their gender identity.
Defending the law on Meet the Press,
McCrory pointed out Houston in November
rejected by a large margin a pro-LGBT nondiscrimination ordinance similar to the one
Charlotte tried to pass. The governor also
noted 29 states do not have these types
of restroom, locker room, and bathroom
policies, referring to states that dont have
laws prohibiting discrimination against
transgender people.
Todd pressed McCrory on the brevity
of time a single day in which the
legislature debated and approved the
law before the governor penned his
name to the measure.
When McCrory shot back by saying
Charlotte approved its measure on a
single evening with very little debate,
Todd noted in the months prior to that
vote, the public was able to discuss
the ordinance, but the state measure
emerged and passed in just one day.
Again pointing to the example of Houston
even though defeat of the ordinance

North Carolina Gov. PAT MCCRORY

anti-LGBT law.

there made no requirements transgender

people be barred from public restrooms,
McCrory maintained discussion should be
more dialogue and not threats.
More than 160 major companies have
called for repeal of House Bill 2 and others,
such as PayPal and Deutsche Bank, have
cancelled expansion plans in the state
over the law. Meanwhile, acts such as
Bruce Springsteen and Cirque du Soleil
have cancelled performances in North
Carolina toprotest the measure.
In a related development this week, a
federal appeals court ruling in favor of a
Virginia transgender student seeking to
use school restrooms consistent with his
gender identity delivered a blow toNorth
Carolinas anti-LGBT law.
Although the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of
Appeals decision pertains to a school district
in Virginia, the case has bearing on House
Bill 2 because the court also has jurisdiction
over North Carolina along with Maryland,
South Carolina and West Virginia. Legal
experts say the decision has the eect of
rendering unenforceable the component
of HB 2 that prohibits transgender students
from using school restrooms consistent
with their gender identity.
Upon news of the decision, McCrory
told reporters he would make sure these
court rulings are abided to, but would
need to consult with lawyers to verify the
necessary approach.
And in another related development,
the lawmaker behind an anti-trans
papers to pee bill in Tennessee
withdrew the measure, eectively killing
it for the year.
According to The Tennessean, State
Rep. Susan Lynn (R-Mt. Juliet), the sponsor
of the bill, said Mondayprior toa planned
committee markup she planned to hold
oon actionto furtherstudythe issue.

Kasich tells LGBT people to get over it

Ted Cruz told a gay New Yorker religious liberty protections are all needs.
SCREENSHOT VIA ABC

Gay New Yorker confronts Cruz

One day before the crucial primary in New York, Republican candidate Ted
Cruz told a gay Republican protections on the basis of religious liberty are all
thats necessary despite laws discriminating against LGBT people in the name of
religious freedom.
Cruz made the remarks during a town hall-style event on ABCs Good Morning
America in response to a question from Todd Calongne, who identied himself
as an undecided, Trump-leaning gay Republican voter in a same-sex marriage
and wanted to know what the candidate would do to protect him from recently
enacted state anti-LGBT religious freedom laws.
When it comes to religious liberty, religious liberty is something that protects
every single one of us, Cruz replied. It is the ...very rst phrase protected in the
First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. And religious liberty, it applies to Christians,
it applies to Jews, it applies to Muslims, it applies to atheists. And all of us, we
want to live in a world where we dont have the government dictating our beliefs,
dictating how we live. We have a right to live according to our faith, according to
our conscience. And that freedom ultimately protects each and every one of us.
Good Morning America host Robin Roberts, a lesbian, followed by asking
whether Calongne has the freedom to be treated equally under the law. Cruz
maintained religious liberty is paramount under the U.S. Constitution.
The First Amendment protects everyone equally, Cruz said. It protects our
faith, it protects the faith of an Orthodox Jew to follow his or her faith without the
government getting in the way and regulating Kosher delis and restricting what
can be served. It protects the freedom of all of us.
As host George Stephanopoulos pointed out, Cruz has introduced an
amendment in the U.S. Senate that would overturn the U.S. Supreme Courts
decision in favor of same-sex marriage. Asked what that would mean for samesex couples who are already married like Calongne, Cruz said marriage is an
issue that belongs to the states.
That has been the case from the very beginning of this country, Cruz added.
Its been up to the states, and so if someone wants to change the marriage laws,
I dont think it should be ve, unelected lawyers down in Washington dictating
that, and even if you agree with that particular decision, why would you want
to hand over every important public policy issue to ve unelected lawyers who
arent accountable to you, who dont work for you?
Cruz concluded individuals seeking to change the marriage laws should
convince the citizenry to change the them as opposed to seeking relief before
the judiciary.
It may end up that weve got 50 states, that the laws in one state may be
dierent than another state and we would expect that, we would expect the
people of New York to adopt dierent laws perhaps than the people of California,
or Texas or Florida, and thats the great thing about a big, diverse country is that
we can have dierent laws that respect dierent values, Cruz said.

John Kasich continues to

seek a middle ground on
LGBT rights compared to
other Republican presidential
candidates,
although
he
thinks LGBT people who face
discrimination should just for
a second get over it.
The Ohio governor made the
remarks during an interview
with CNNs Dana Bash that
aired Sunday on State of
the Union in response to a
question on whether he would
take steps against state antiLGBT laws like the one recently
passed in Mississippi.
Kasich initially replied he
Gov. JOHN KASICH (R-Ohio) said LGBT people who face
wouldnt take steps against
discrimination should just for a second get over it.
those laws, then added, I
WASHINGTON BLADE PHOTO BY CHRIS JOHNSON
havent even been asked that
or thought about it.
Urging people to calm down, the governor said the country needs to protect religious
liberty, but also cant allow discrimination, so must strike a balance on the issue.
What I like to say is, just relax, if you dont like what somebody is doing, pray for
them, Kasich said. And if you feel as though somebody is doing something wrong
against you, can you just for a second get over it because this thing will settle down?
Kasich lamented the issue has become a wedge issue that can be exploited by people
on both sides, saying the country should be the United States and not the Divided
States.
The 2016 hopeful made the remarks after saying he wouldnt have signed North
Carolinas controversial anti-LGBT law and dismissing Mississippis new law that enables
anti-LGBT discrimination in the name of religious freedom.
TJ Helmstetter, a spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee, said Kasich
is trying to have it both ways on the issue of anti-LGBT discrimination in the name of
religious freedom.
Either youre for discrimination, or youre against it, Helmstetter said. To tell LGBT
victims of discrimination to just relax and get over it is disrespectful, outrageous, and
not the kind of leadership expected from a credible presidential candidate.

Clinton, Sanders to meet with HIV advocates

Following controversy last month after Hillary Clinton praised Nancy Reagans eorts
on HIV/AIDS, the Democratic presidential candidate and her rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders
(I-Vt.) have agreed to meet separately with HIV advocates to plot a way forward to
achieve an AIDS-free generation.
Clinton, who has apologized twice for the gae, but has never explained why she
made it in the rst place, indicated via a letter to HIV advocates from senior policy
adviser Maya Harris she would take part in a meeting May 13 in New York City.
As you know, the secretary has fought for decades to combat HIV and AIDS, and she
has included it as a priority issue in her campaign, Harris writes. Secretary Clinton is
delighted to accept your invitation and is available to meet on May 13th in New York
City to discuss how we can build on this agenda. We look forward to working with you to
determine a convenient time, location, and list of participants for this meeting.
Clinton agreed to the meeting after a group of more than 70 HIV advocates wrote an
open letter to her calling on her to appoint an HIV adviser, meet with HIV community
leadership and declare a commitment to end the AIDS epidemic nationally by 2025.
Among the 70 signers of the letter were New York City-based gay rights and HIV
advocate Peter Staley, the New York-based Gay Mens Health Crisis, ACT UP New York,
the National Black Justice Coalition, NMAC, Human Rights Campaign, the New Yorkbased health agency Amida Care and the D.C.-based HIV/AIDS advocacy group Housing
Works.
Sanders signaled hell meet with HIV advocates in the rst week of May via a separate
letter from Sarah Scanlon, his campaigns national director of LGBTQ outreach.

Venezuelan artivist
ghts homophobia
AMHERST, Mass. A self-described gay artivist from Venezuela is using his
art to ght homophobia and other forms of discrimination.
Daniel Arzola is behind the Im Not a Joke campaign, which features a series
of 50 posters that contain a sentence and a digital illustration.
The campaign known as No soy tu chiste in Spanish has appeared
in the U.S., Venezuela, Brazil, Australia, Uganda, Russia and two dozen other
countries around the world. Arzolas posters have also been translated into
English, Portuguese and 18 other languages.
Its about being dierent, Arzola told the Washington Blade on April 14 during
an interview at Amherst College where an LGBT student group had invited him
to speak.
Katy Perry selected several of Arzolas posters for Madonnas Art for Freedom,
a project for which she is a guest curator.
Arzola told the Blade that his life changed when Madonna tweeted a picture
of one of them on Oct. 8, 2013.
At that moment Im Not a Joke was not only for activists, said Arzola. I
received a lot of interview (requests) from a lot of countries. And the people from
Venezuela who hate me knew my work because Madonna made that tweet.
Its a little clich but Madonna changed my life, he added.
Arzola, 26, grew up in Maracay, a city that is roughly 70 miles south southwest
of the Venezuelan capital of Caracas.
Arzola, who has an older brother, told the Blade that he was a very shy and
lonely child. He said that he used art to communicate with other people.
If I liked you, I preferred to give you than to talk to you, said Arzola.
Arzola said he came out to his mother when he was 5, telling her that he liked
a boy in his kindergarten class.
I told her and she beat me, said Arzola.
Arzola told the Blade that his mother, who is a teacher, is not homophobic
anymore. He said she now wears a t-shirt that promotes his art in her classroom.
Shes like my biggest fan all the time, said Arzola.
Arzola said that three of his neighbors attacked him when he was 15.
He told the Blade that they took o his pants and shoes before tying him to
a telephone poll with cables. Arzola said he was able to escape when one of his
attackers tried to nd gasoline to set him on re.
He told the Blade that his assailants destroyed all of his drawings.
They tried to burn me alive because thats the way that some people in
Venezuela react to the dierences in another person, Arzola told the Blade. Its
not only if youre gay.
Arzola said he was unable to draw for the next six years until one day I understood
that my story is not the only story and I had the luck to escape and survive. He told
the Blade that an 18-year-old man from Maracay who was attacked because of his
sexual orientation suered burns over nearly 50 percent of his body.
Theres a lot of people burning people alive or hurting other people in
Venezuela for being gay, said Arzola.
The U.N. Oce on Drugs and Crime notes that Venezuela has one of the worlds
highest homicide rates. A deepening economic crisis has caused a shortage of
basic goods, triple-digit ination and growing political and social instability.
Tamara Adrin, a Caracas lawyer who is a member of Popular Will, a leftleaning party, in December became the rst openly trans person elected to the
Venezuelan National Assembly. Anti-LGBT violence and discrimination remains
pervasive in the South American country in spite of this historic election.
Arzola, who studied graphic design and art in Venezuela, told the Blade that
he wanted to use art as a way to challenge anti-gay violence and homophobia
in his homeland.
This is the way that artivism burns in my head, he said. I need to ght violence
with other things and in Venezuela being gay is always in the media. People
laugh about being LGBT, so I was wondering (about) when we start to laugh
about tragedy, about the pain of others. In Venezuela people are always saying
that, Were so cool because we nd a joke in everything. But that everything
sometimes includes the pain of others.
Thats where the name Im Not a Joke comes in, added Arzola. I want to talk
with people like you and me, so Im not your joke. Im not a joke.

Jerusalem Pride attacker convicted of murder

An Israeli court on Tuesday convicted an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man of murder and
attempted murder in connection with a 2015 attack on a Jerusalem Pride march.
The Jerusalem Post reported that the Jerusalem District Court found Yishai Schlissel
guilty of murder and six counts of attempted murder.
Prosecutors allege that Schlissel stabbed Shira Banki, a 16-year-old teenager, to death
and injured six others who were taking part in the Pride march on July 30, 2015. The
attack took place less than a month after Schlissel completed a 10-year prison sentence
in connection with the stabbing of three people during a Jerusalem Pride march in 2005.
The Jerusalem Post reported that the court on Tuesday blasted Israeli police ocials
for not doing enough to stop Schlissel.
We condemned the attack at the 2015 Jerusalem Pride Parade in the strongest
possible terms, a State Department ocial told the Washington Blade on Tuesday.
We commend the Israeli government for holding the perpetrator accountable for this
horrendous crime.
Tom Canning of Jerusalem Open House for Pride and Tolerance, which organized the
Pride march, said in a statement that nothing can heal the immense pain we still feel
following this vicious attack and death of a innocent girl Shira Banki.
Our community still carrys the trauma and fear of violence from the events of that
day, added Canning. I hope that Schlissel will receive the maximum penalty, which will
perhaps contribute to our healing process.

Travel companies challenge Cuba regulations

A U.S. cruise line on Monday said it would postpone trips to Cuba if a policy that
prohibits anyone who was born on the Communist island from traveling there by sea
remains in place.
Carnival Corp. CEO Arnold Donald in a statement said Cuban nationals are now able
to book reservations for the Adonia, a 704-passenger cruise ship that the companys
Fathom brand operates.
The Adonia is scheduled to depart Miami on May 1 for a weeklong cruise that is
scheduled to dock in Havana and the cities of Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba. Donald
in his statement notes the Adonia will be the rst cruise ship to sail from the U.S. to the
Communist island in more than 50 years.
Ads that are promoting the cruise that will sail to Cuba from Miami every other
week are currently running on D.C. television stations.
As we continue our discussions with Cuba, and in anticipation of Fathom travelers
being on equal footing with those who travel by air, we are accepting bookings from all
travelers, including Cuba-born individuals, said Donald. However if Cubas decision is
delayed beyond May 1, we will delay the start of our sailings.
Donald released his statement less than a week after a lawyer led lawsuits on behalf
of four Cuban Americans who claim they suered discrimination because Carnival
prohibited them from booking the cruise.
Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos
Gimenez who were both born in Cuba are among those who criticized Carnivals
decision not to allow Cuban nationals to book reservations on the Adonia.

Plainti Lilly, amidst the whole precinct,
and bluntly said, Well I just know all
faggots will burn in hellso that is on
them.
Adds the lawsuit, To Plainti Lillys
knowledge, no report, investigation or
follow-up was made into this matter.
When asked for comment on the
lawsuit, Assistant D.C. Police Chief Peter
Newsham told the Washington Blade on
Monday that under a longstanding policy
the department never comments on
pending litigation.
I cant talk about a specic lawsuit,
Newsham said. But I can tell about how
we dont tolerate bias by any members
on this police department. Its something
we take very seriously, he said. And if
we become aware of it corrective action
will be taken all the way up to removal if it
was severe enough.
Robert Marus, a spokesperson for
the Oce of the D.C. Attorney General,
which is representing the city against
the lawsuit, said his oce also could not
comment on a specic case pending in
court.
Court records show that D.C. Attorney
General Karl Racine and other attorneys
with the oce responded to the lawsuit
in January of this year by ling a motion
calling for the dismissal of its rst
three counts. Those counts allege that
the discrimination and harassment
Lilly encountered by police violated
his First and Fourteenth Amendment
constitutional rights of freedom of
expression and equal protection under

the law.
Plainti has failed to state a
constitutional claim on which relief
can be granted and this Court should
dismiss Counts One, Two and Three of
the Amended Complaint, the Attorney
Generals motion states.
The Attorney Generals court lings
as of this week have not responded
to the lawsuits specic allegations of
discrimination and harassment and other
substantive claims.
A spokesperson for U.S. District
Court Judge Emmet G. Sullivan, who is
presiding over the case, said Sullivan was
deliberating over the pending motion and
he was expected to rule on the motion
without calling a hearing.
Lillys attorney, Sameera Ali of the D.C.
law rm Ali, White & Coleman, said she
would consider answering questions
about the lawsuit submitted by the
Blade, but she had not responded as of
Wednesday.
A police source who was assigned to
the Fourth District during part of Lillys
tenure there disputed Lillys allegations,
saying that Lilly had a reputation for
odd behavior and that any ridicule or
teasing he may have encountered had
nothing to do with his sexual orientation.
The source, who spoke on condition of
not being identied because the source
was not authorized to speak to the media,
said Lilly also had a reputation of not
adequately carrying out his police duties.
The lawsuit doesnt ring true, the
source said. He had a habit of not telling
the truth.
The lawsuit says that prior to becoming
a police ocer Lilly had been previously
treated for Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder (OCD) tendencies and has
been diagnosed and treated for Attention

Decit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

since the age of 20.
It adds, Since the onset of Plainti
Lillys employment, these diagnoses
did not interfere or aect Mr. Lillys job
performance.
Lilly did not respond to a call from the
Blade seeking comment.
His lawsuit says that over the next
two years following the locker incident
Lilly led more internal MPD complaints
about the alleged harassment and
discriminatory actions, including at least
one complaint before the departments
Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)
Compliance Division. It says Lilly was
subjected to retaliation after ling those
complaints.
Plainti is a homosexual male who
engaged in protected EEO activity
when he repeatedly reported illegal
harassment, hate crimes, bias-related
disciplinary actions and retaliation to his
supervisors in the Fourth District, the
lawsuit says.
The Department has selectively
mistreated Plainti on the basis of
his gender and associated sexual
orientation, it says.
In doing this, the lawsuit charges that
the MPD and the city violated among
other laws, Title VII of the U.S. Civil Rights
Act of 1964, the First and Fourteenth
Amendments of the U.S. Constitution,
and the D.C. Human Rights Act.
The harassment and hostile treatment
toward him combined with work-related
health issues that occurred during that
period resulted in the department taking
steps to re him and later forcing him to
retire on disability in 2013, according to
the lawsuit.
The forced retirement, which the
lawsuit says was a form of termination,

came after he was hospitalized for a

mental health crisis, including a bout of
posttraumatic stress disorder the lawsuit
says was brought about by a prolonged
period of being subjected to a hostile
work environment.
Although
the
forced
disability
retirement includes a benet of
receiving 40 percent of his basic salary
as compensation, the reduction in
his income created a severe nancial
hardship for him, the lawsuit says.
With the reduced income, Plainti
Lilly was evicted from his home, resulting
in homelessness and subsequent
addiction, it says.
The lawsuit says Lilly is currently living
in Las Vegas.
It calls on the court to award Lilly
compensatory damages to be determined
by a jury up to a maximum award of
$300,000; to impose civil penalties on the
city and the MPD; and to order the city to
pay Lillys attorneys fees.
Although lawsuits of this type are part
of the public court record, neither Lilly nor
his attorney publicly disclosed that it had
been led last August. The Blade learned
about the lawsuit last month from David
Mariner, executive director of D.C.s LGBT
Community Center.
Mariner said he has spoken with Lilly
and he believes Lillys case is just one
example of what Mariner says have been
numerous instances of LGBT D.C. police
ocers being subjected to discrimination
on the job.
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has
stated at LGBT events in recent years
that she and the department do not
tolerate anti-LGBT discrimination within
the department or through MPD ocers
interactions with members of the
community.

Acela primary up next in contentious 2016 election

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

ballot, or if the GOP is headed toward an

open convention.
Much attention will be on Pennsylvania,
the largest state in Acela primary, which
yields 71 delegates for Republicans and
181 delegates for Democrats.
Malcolm Lazin, executive director of
the Philadelphia-based Equality Forum,
said as a 501(c)(3) organization, his
group doesnt endorse candidates, but
predicted the results in Pennsylvania
would be similar to New York.
Pennsylvania is the largest of next
Tuesdays Acela states, Lazin said. If,
as is expected Secretary Clinton and Mr.
Trump dominate those primaries, it will
make a compelling case that Secretary
Clinton is the Democratic presidential
nominee and that Mr. Trump will come
close after the California primary to the
needed 1,237 votes for the Republican
presidential nomination.
In Maryland, where 105 delegates are
up for grabs on the Democratic side,
a Public Policy Polling poll published
on Tuesday found Hillary Clinton looks
headed for a resounding victory over
Sanders. Among Democratic voters,
Clinton leads Sanders 58-33. Much of
that lead is the result of black voters in
Maryland, which comprise 40 percent of
the states Democratic primary electorate
and support her 70-25.
The only question in Maryland on
the Democratic side is the margin,
said Dean Debnam, president of Public
Policy Polling. A closed primary state
with a large black population is about as
tailor made for Hillary Clinton as it could
possibly be.
On the Republican side in Maryland,
where 38 delegates are up for grabs,
Trump only had a plurality of support
inthe poll at43 percent, but thats higher
than support for John Kasich and Ted
Cruz, who are closely matched for second
place at 29 percent and 24 percent
respectively.
John Fluharty, a gay Kasich support and
former head of the Delaware Republican
Party, predicted Trump would claim
all 16 delegates for Republicans in the
First State. On the Democratic side, 27
delegates are in play.
Both Trump and Kasich have set up
shop in Delaware, and are working hard,
Fluharty said. The only chance Kasich
has to move from 2nd place to 1st place
in Delaware is if Cruz/Trump split the vote
in Sussex/Kent Counties.
In Connecticut, where 121 delegates
are up for grabs for Democrats and 28
for Republicans, the projected results are
similar. A Qunnipiac poll found Clinton
has a 5142 percent lead over Sanders.
Meanwhile, Trump had 48 percent
support among likely Republicans

compared to 28 percent for Kasich and

19 percent for Cruz.
The remaining state in the Acela
primary, Rhode Island, yields 19 delegates
for Republicans and 31 delegates for
Democrats. The Washington Blade could
not nd recent polling in the state.
In this weeks New York primary,
with 99 percent of precincts reporting
on the Democratic side, Clinton, who
represented New York as a U.S. senator,
won 57.9 percent of the vote compared
to the 42.1 percent won by Sanders even
though the Vermont independent was
born in Brooklyn. With the same amount
of precinctsreporting on the Republican
side, Trump, who claims New York as his
home state, won 60.5 percent of the vote
compared to the 25.1 percent won by
Kasich and the 14.5 percent won by Cruz.
The New York primary was considered
crucial for both front-runners after a
series of setbacks and should inject
momentum into their campaigns as
the primary season continues. On the
Democratic side, a mother lode of 247
delegates were on the table, while New
York yielded 95 delegates for Republican
candidates.
Speaking to supporters after polls
closed, Clinton seemed to make a direct
appeal to Sanders supporters as she
said: There is much more that unites us
than divides us.
We started this race not far from
here on Roosevelt Island pledging to
build on the progressive tradition thats
done so much for America from Franklin
Roosevelt to Barack Obama, Clinton said.
And tonight, a little less than a year later,
the race for the Democratic nomination
is in the home stretch and victory is in
sight.
In his victory speech in Manhattan,
Trump credited his win with frustration
felt by many Americans and looked ahead
to states in the upcoming primaries.
We expect were going to have an
amazing number of weeks because these
are places and theyre in big trouble,
theyre in big trouble, Trump said. When
you look at Pennsylvania, when you look
at Indiana, when you look at Maryland
and Rhode Island and so many places, we
have problems everywhere you look. We
are going to solve those problems, and
one of the big problems is the economy
and jobs, and that is my wheelhouse.
Clintons win makes up for a string of
losses in seven other Democratic contests
where Sanders was the victor. With a
nearly 16-point loss in New York, Sanders
seems even more unlikely to make up
the delegates he needs to secure the
Democratic nomination.
Prior to his massive win in New York,
Trump faced setbacks because of losses in
Colorado and Wyoming. Republicans allied
with other campaigns were named as his

delegates in Michigan, Iowa and South

Carolina, making it unlikely they would
continue to support him during the
Republican National Convention if he
doesnt win on the rst ballot.
Richard Socarides, a gay New York Citybased Democratic activist and Clinton
supporter, attributed what he called a
big win for Hillary in the Big Apple in part
to her support among the LGBT people.
There is a lot of enthusiasm for her
within New Yorks LGBT community and it
looks like a lot of us came out to support
her, Socarides said. She was at the
LGBT Center near Stonewall yesterday

and the crowd was ecstatic. She is clearly

connecting with LGBT Americans and
they are responding.
Roberta Kaplan, the New York-based
lesbian attorney who successfully
litigated against the Defense of Marriage
Act before the U.S. Supreme Court, said
Clintons victory in New York makes
sense.
Im thrilled, but not surprised, Kaplan
said. While we New Yorkers can be a
tough bunch, we are ercely loyal and
there is no one who has worked harder
for New Yorkers or who reects our New
York values more than Hillary Clinton.

New LGBT alumni chapter at Morgan State

A group of alumni from Morgan State University, with the support of President
David Wilsons LGBTQA Advisory Council, is planning to launch a new LGBTQA
chapter on homecoming weekend in October.
The goals of the new chapter are to support current LGBTQA students and
policy initiatives on campus, in conjunction with the Advisory Council, and to
provide a sense of community for LGBTQA alumni through social events,
communication and updates.
To join, you must have received an undergraduate or graduate degree from
Morgan and be a paid member of the Alumni Association (as of July 1, 2016).
Dues will be $30 per year in addition to 2016-17 Alumni Association dues.
I am very excited to be bringing an LGBT Alumni Chapter to our Alma Matter,
Morgan State, Vanessa Bowling Ajavon, former president of Rainbow Soul,
Morgan States ocial Gay-Straight Alliance, told the Blade.
We are asking all LGBTQA allies to join the alumni chapter so we can help
make Morgan an even more accepting community while keeping in touch with
each other, said Ajavon who met her wife while a freshman at Morgan State.
Adds Claudia Leight, a founder of Rainbow Soul: [This] is one more step in
Morgans armation of LGBTQA issues. I hope that some alumni will see that
the campus climate is improving, with a variety of initiatives, among them:
the existence since 2001 of the LGBTQA student organization, SOUL (formerly
Rainbow Soul); the formation of the presidents LGBTQA Advisory Council;
the strong Womens and Gender Studies program; and our biennial academic
symposium on Intersections of Sexuality, Gender, Race and Ethnicity--basically a
queer studies conference, unique at an HBCU.

CDC reports rst gay Zika case in Dallas

DALLAS The Centers For Disease Control conrmed another sexually
transmitted case of the Zika virus was discovered in Dallas, CBS Dallas-Forth
Worth reports.
This time the virus was shared between two men. One man traveled to
Venezuela, then came home and was intimate with his partner, according to
the CDC.
Health ocials said itsthe rst report of infection between a gay couple, and
worry that Zika will spread even faster through sex as well as through mosquito
bites, CBS reports.
On Wednesday, U.S. health ocials said that there is no longer a doubt that
the Zika virus causes severe birth defects.
Both Planos health director and Collin Countys health director point out that
Zika is dierent from West Nile virus in that the mosquitoes that carry Zika are
day-biters, and everyone will need to be more vigilant now especially as we head
into mosquito season.
Experts had previously been cautious about making a denitive link, despite a
surge of babies born in Brazil with a rare birth defect during a Zika outbreak. The
virus is primarily spread by mosquitoes, and no mosquito-borne virus before
had ever been known to cause birth defects, CBS reports.
But on Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said
that there is enough evidence now to declare the Zika virus as the cause of a
birth defect called microcephaly and other brain abnormalities. Microcephaly
is a condition that leaves babies with shrunken heads due to the brain not
developing properly during pregnancy, CBS reports.

Campus issues vexing for trans students: study

ATLANTA Transgender university and college students are at a signicantly
higher risk for suicide attempts when their campus experience includes being
denied access to bathrooms and gender-appropriate campus housing, a Georgia
State University study nds.
An alarmingly high proportion of the transgender individuals participating
in this study 46.5 percent had a history of attempted suicide, said Kristie
Seelman, assistant professor of social work in the Andrew Young School of Policy
Studies.
The rate of attempted suicide was even higher among those who had been
denied access to bathrooms (60.5 percent) or gender-appropriate campus
housing (60.6 percent), which were signicant dierences, she said.
Seelman paired data from the National Transgender Discrimination Survey
(NTDS), a study of more than 6,000 transgender adults, including more than 2,300
individuals who self-identied as transgender while in college, to study whether
denial of access to bathrooms and gender-appropriate campus housing are
related to a heightened risk for suicide attempts among transgender individuals.
Nearly a quarter of those in the NTDS who had attended college reported being
denied access to bathrooms or other campus facilities due to being transgender
or gender non-conforming. About a fth of the total sample had been denied
access to gender-appropriate campus housing. The study was published in the
Journal of Homosexuality.

When Britains digital spy chief Robert

World War II codebreaker and computer

and driven to an early grave for being gay.
The upcoming British referendum on
exiting the European Union, or Brexit for
short, threatens new harm that its supporters may come to regret. The anger
fueling it resembles that of voters on
Americas side of the pond. U.K. Independence Party chief Nigel Farage, a Brexit
leader, has insulted our president over
it. Obama, Farage says, is the most antiBritish American president ever.
Considering that George Washington
and James Madison actually went to war
against the British Crown, Obama is at
best the third most Anglophobic. But he
thinks Britain should stay in the EU, and
that sends Farage into ts. Some American conservatives have even complained
that Obama removed a bust of Winston

those who would keep Britain in the European fold at all costs. The itch to bolt is
rooted partly in racist fears of being overrun by the peoples they themselves overran, and partly in nostalgia for a prettied
past stitched together from pastoral idylls
and the glories of empire: This blessed
plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

We must earn our standing anew in each

generation. Our global competitors cannot be expected to hold back out of aection as we slide into mediocrity.
Britains situation, however, is more dire.
If Brexit passes, it could lead to the breakup
of the United Kingdom and fuel separatist
movements in Belgium and Spain.
Our British cousins should heed Obama
and pause at the brink. They have nothing
but stolen artifacts and a lingering sense
of entitlement separating them from the
reality of a once-great country facing a
changed world. America may not be far
behind, with Republicans bent on starting
another arms buildup while letting bridges
crumble and replacing science with dogma, and with progressives drunk on facile
talk of revolution. Revolutions rarely produce less bloodshed and greater freedom.
Like Brexit proponents, Americans at

ses, as Secretary Clinton points out, are

not solutions. But lopsided policies driven
by domestic political pandering, as with
her bellicose rhetoric on Israel, can undermine our relationships around the world.
The clash of voices in contests for
elected ocials is less hazardous than
plebiscites on issues where voters can
be stampeded by demagogues. We can
steer a steadier course if we remember
that no leader is perfect.
It could be said that our task in this election is to choose the least unscrupulous and
delusional candidate, to return to basics like
hard work, decency and respect. We will sober up eventually; the question is whether
we will do so before we have cause to regret, like Britain with Alan Turing, the loss of
a treasure we heedlessly threw away.

Hillary poised to wrap up nomination after N.Y. win

April 26 will be game, set, match

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

No one should be surprised Hillary Clinton won the New York primary. She was
embraced by New Yorkers who rst elected her senator in 2000 and reelected her
in 2006 by a wide margin. As a born-andraised New Yorker I wasnt surprised. New
York has a penchant for electing smart,
strong, dynamic people to represent it.
New Yorkers arent worried about where
you were born they are more concerned
with what you stand for and if you can keep
up with them.
It is a state with widely varying interests,
strengths and problems. Many would say

the dierences between New York City

and upstate are too great to bring them together in support of one person. Because
of those dierences only a wise and strong
candidate can win support across the state.
Hillary is that candidate.
With her big win Hillary now has 2.7 million more actual votes than Sanders and a
lead of 250 delegates. Next Tuesday, the
primaries in Pennsylvania, Connecticut,
Delaware and Maryland, in which Hillary has
big leads, will put the nal nail in Sanders
chances of winning the nomination; it will be
game, set, match. At that time Sanders will
have to decide if and why he would keep going. If he continues, lets hope he stops doing
the work of Republicans attacking Clinton.
Hillary wins because she listens to people and doesnt talk at them. She always
understood you start with a principle you
believe in, learn from others what they believe and what they want and then craft
policies and solutions in keeping with your
own principles and goals but helping others
to also achieve their goals. It sounds simple
but few people, especially politicians, can
accomplish it.

For some in political life pragmatism and

compromise have become dirty words. But
our Founding Fathers set up a government
that requires both. Through the system of
checks and balances our Constitution made
it clear no one person or branch of government was ever going to be in full control.
Looking at our history and how far we have
come we know making change is a slow,
grueling process. It took the Civil War to end
slavery and massive negotiations to amend
the Constitution to extend voting rights to
African Americans and still today some are
trying to turn back the clock. We have yet to
include women in the Constitution failing to
pass the Equal Rights Amendment and we
are feeling the backlash against the progress made by the LGBT community.
Voters will reject the far left and far right
and elect a progressive pragmatist and the
rst woman president a candidate with
experience, proven success and a record of
ghting for progressive policies and the human and civil rights of all.
Contrary to the Sanders campaign rhetoric, Hillary is winning every state that looks
like the Democratic Party, which represents

the diversity of the nation. So while Bernie

may not drop out yet the time has come for
him to tamp down his apparently natural
inclinations to be sarcastic, negative and
invoke sexism against opponents.
Ego is dicult to contain, especially when
thousands of people come out to your rallies and buy into your shtick about free college and single payer healthcare without
understanding it wont happen even if you
are elected. Sanders has waited his whole
life, nearly 75 years, for his 15 minutes of
fame. He now has it and is making the most
of it. But he needs to face reality, tone down
the attacks against Hillary and remind his
supporters that keeping a Republican out
of the White House has to be the ultimate
goal.
Sanders can be proud he moved the
Democratic Party toward his positions. He
brought the issue of income inequality to
the forefront of political discourse and we
should all be grateful for that. But after his
loss in New York, his disastrous New York
Daily News editorial board interview, his
positions on Israel and gun control, he will
never be elected president.

A vote for Bernie is one you can be proud of

Clinton represents sameold, same-old
By DAVID HOFFMAN
Well then, voters, its time rst, inMaryland on April 26, and later, in D.C., the last
stop on the Democratic presidential nomination merry-go-round, on June 14. Yes,its
time to belly up to the ballot bar.
The time for wish fulllmentisover. Decisions must be made.
Choices, even hard choices, to use the title oftherecent book by formerSecretary of
State Hillary Clinton, must nally beselected
and in way also scores must be settled.
Because, voters, its nally comedown essentially, and in a way agonizingly, to one or
theother of just two candidatesintheDemocraticprimary.
Either we choose a consistent progressive voice, one whose election would mark
asharp turn in the right (ahem, left-of-center) direction for American politics.
Inother words, we can decide to embark
on a truly new turnof thepoliticalcycle in
which we refresh the springs of our national
journey the one, for generations now, in
which the arc ofstruggle bends long but it
bendstoward ever greaterjustice and not
only forgender issues but also for thebasic

stu of life (income, wealth, power, andultimatelythepursuitofhappiness). After all,

when we vote we place a bet on our collective future and our individual hopes and
dreams for a better world, in which we fulll the promise of American democracy in
both the economic and political realms.
Inother words, we vote for Bernie Sanders, thesenator from Vermont.
And that is my own decision as a voter
whose life has beendevotedto campaigns
to enlarge the franchise and expandthedemocracy, from my rst political hero, John
F. Kennedy, to later ones like the populist agenda in 1976 of former Oklahoma
Sen. Fred R. Harris, whose campaign declaredthatthe issue is privilege, to former
Nebraska Sen.Bob Kerrey in 1992, to former
VermontGov. Howard Deanin 2003-2004.
Or we vote for Hillary Clinton, the troubled
and ever-troubling candidate of the mostly status quo, whose cheeks have been
so very close to the jowls of Wall Street,
whose SuperPACs are an insulting way to
raise politicalmoney.
Berniessupportersaverage $27 incontributionswhile just last week in California Hillarys backersintheHollywoodeliteponied
up $353,000 each in an exclusive fundraiser
symbolicof where herinstinctstake her.
Thats the choice, friends and allies inthe
LGBT community, not the ideal, mind you,

but a hardchoice. Achoice where we let the

perfect become the enemy of the good at
our politicalperil.
Some harsh things have been said about
Sanders in these pages by other columnists, by people who I must respect as allies butwhoseexcess of zeal for Hillary Clinton have led them, almostblindly and with
ad hominem willingness to misrepresent
facts, to call Sanders a liar and to tell Sanders voters like myself that were children trying to barge into an adults game.
Playtime is over, we were admonished
in these pages by one columnist. Get realistic, the Democratic establishment has
been saying, and vote for Hillary. After all,
weve been told, that shes a progressive,
and to somedegree and in some measure,
theyre right. Much of her career has indeed
been a noble one, including working for the
Childrens Defense Fund and ghting for expanded health insurancecoverage.
But lets be honest. Her foreign policy
has been a virtually unmitigated disaster,
including her zeal to back President George
W. Bush in hismendacious and catastrophicdecision toinvade and occupy Iraq.
Andthentheres her purported muscling
of President Obama, against his better instincts, to topple Qadda in Libya, leading
to the current nightmare there, with ISIS
burrowing its way into that failed state.

And then theres her misguided insistence

onpushing for U.S. meddling in the Syrian
civil war, and her continued unapologetic
advocacy tocreate a no-y zone there.
Andthentheres Wall Street. Full stop. Do
Ireally need to document this one? No?
I didnt think so either. Hillary Clinton,
publish those secrettranscriptsof your highpriced, closed-door speeches to Goldman
Sachs!
Sanders is far and away our bestchoice.
Yes, Clinton has been OK, and even at
times arguably brave, though not at rst
when it came to marriage equality or Dont
Ask, Dont Tell, where Bernie was right from
theverybeginning. And she wasnt.
And then there was her very recent,
cringe-inducing claim, belied by the facts,
that Ronald and Nancy Reagan were ghters to confront the HIV/AIDS calamity that
was ignored so cruelly bythe Reagans.
So stop andthink, voters. Can we choose
a liberating vision over an accommodatingone? Is a vote for Hillary Clinton in other words, for the same old same old, only
more so one you will be proud of in the
years ahead? Or will only avote for Bernie
Sanders meet thathigh standard?

Recently, we pulled a batch of our original
windows that were installed more than 2
decades ago. And what did we find? They passed
performance tests with flying colors. After 20 years
facing real weather, they remained incredibly
strong and there was no cracking, peeling or
chipping on our windows. They still opened and
closed as easily as the day they were installed.

A legendary home.

And youre invited.
You dont have to sacrice quality cooking with a small space.

Smart spaces
MAXIMIZE YOUR KITCHEN WITH STRATEGIC PLANNING
(StatePoint) Too often, the kitchen is
the rst room of a home to suer the
consequences of tight living quarters.
But theres no need to forfeit big-scale
cooking in a small-scale kitchen.
Ditch the compromises and maximize
the space you do have to make your
kitchen work for you and all your culinary
aspirations.

Cut the fat

Do a top-to-bottom inventory of your
kitchen implements to assess what you
need and what you can discard or donate.
Sleek newer designs of certain
appliances tend to take up less space
than their clunky, older counterparts.
They also oer more multi-functionality.
For example, ovens that contain a
warming drawer that can be used for
slow cooking, potentially eliminates
the need for a standalone slow cooker.
Blenders that come with food processor
attachments can help you de-clutter your
countertop.
A periodic audit of your kitchen can
keep things running smoothly and
eciently.

New appliance options designed for

compact kitchens can help ensure that
limited space is not a deterrent for those
passionate about cooking. For example,
Verona Appliances oer upscale, spaceecient ranges at 24 and 30 inches with
both gas and electric options.
These ranges include features like
space-saving drawers for pots and pans,
multi-function ovens featuring a closeddoor broil, European convection fan,

heavy-duty racks and a broiler pan and

multi-functional warming drawers with
settings suitable for proong dough and
slow cooking. For more information, visit
veronaappliances.com.
For a stylish, sophisticated option,
consider the 24-inch Nostalgie Gas
Range from ILVE, which comes fully
equipped with the benets of the brands
larger ranges, but is small enough
to t into virtually any kitchen with a
gas connection. Four high power BTU
burners, a full width warming drawer and
multi-function oven with convection bake
and broil and a defrost mode can make
cooking compactly a cinch.
And powerful compact cooking can
also extend to cooktops. For instance,
ILVE also oers a 15-inch Gas Griddle
Cooktop that works with accessories like a
steam cooker, bain marie warming basin,
cutting board and griddle top dome to
cook eclectically and with air in a tight
space. More information can be found at
ilveappliances.com.

Creative storage
Your conventional storage options will
only get you so far in a compact kitchen.
Stretch your concept of storage to open
up a world of new possibilities.
Wall-mounted magnetic units can be
a great place to store knives, pots and
pans, freeing up limited cabinet space.
Corkboard added to the backs of pantry
and cupboard doors is ideal for hanging
light utensils, recipes and notes. Shelving
can be built under kitchen tables and
kitchen islands. The possibilities are
endless.
For happier cooking, give your compact
kitchen a functional makeover.

can seek a little ower in our lives.
For me, landscaping is a necessary evil. I
learned early on to write a bi-weekly check so
I could enjoy the fruits and ora of someone

of geraniums, a profusion of peonies, or
just a basket of begonias, looking at colorful

KRISTIN CHENOWETH and ANDREW LIPPA combine forces this weekend in twin tales of iconoclasm.

A FEMINIST, A GAY MARTYR, A COMPOSER AND HIS MUSE JOIN FORCES IN NEW WORK
By KEITH LORIA
Andrew Lippa feels like the luckiest
man in the world.
Its all Lippa all the time this weekend
at the Strathmore as the world premiere
of his concept opera I Am Anne
Hutchinson/I Am Harvey Milk is held. He
wrote the music and book and will star in
the piece alongside Kristin Chenoweth.
Its a lavish production. Noah
Himmelstein will direct more than 200

performers including Colin Wheeler, the

National Philharmonic and the Alexandria
Harmonizers to dramatize the lives of
two reluctant prophets who stood up for
equality and changed the world.
Its not enough to write all the words
and all the music, I also have to play the
leading role, he says. The delight I have
that I get to play in the sandbox in this
way, to be in it and of it, I feel like the

luckiest person in the world.

The genesis of the play at least half
of it dates back to 2011 when Lippa
was asked by the music director of the
San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus (Tim
Seelig) to write a ve-minute piece about
his thoughts and observations about
Harvey Milk.
There was a co-commission with six
other choruses and they were planning on

doing a whole concert in 2013, Lippa says.

I told them I wanted to write a 60-minute
piece, not just ve minutes, and after much
discussion, they came back and asked me
to write the whole thing.
Of course, the noted librettist had
quite the resume at the time. He wrote
the Tony-nominated music and lyrics

Since its inception 28 years ago, Food & Friends has provided more than 19
million meals to about 28,700 individuals ghting HIV/AIDS, cancer and other
life-challenging illnesses free of charge in the D.C. Metro area.
Its signature event Dining Out for Life is now in its 28th year and will
be held Thursday, April 28 with about 65 area restaurants having pledged
to contribute anywhere from 25-110 percent of their proceeds that day to
Food & Friends. Ristorante Tosca (1112 F St., N.W.) and Annies Paramount
Steakhouse (1609 17th St., N.W.) are each giving 100 percent. And gay-owned
Freddies Beach Bar (555 23rd St., S. Arlington, Va.) is giving 110 percent.
Last year, the event raised more than $200,000. A full list of participating
restaurants is at foodandfriends.org/dol.
Michael Bento has been involved with Food & Friends since it started in 1987.
Hes been a volunteer and donor and has been on the board for six years.
Food & Friends began in crisis when the LGBT community organized to
provide meals to our brothers and sisters with AIDS who were literally
starving because health care workers wouldnt bring them meals and family
had abandoned them, says the 55-year-old Tiverton, R.I., native. And while
HIV/AIDS will always be core to our mission, today more than half of our
clients have cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. The LGBT community
built Food & Friends and its been our gift to the entire community.
Bento plans to dine at Thally (1316 9th St., N.W.) in Shaw that evening. Hes
been in Washington since 1979 when he arrived as a freshman at Georgetown
University. He works by day at ENGAGE Strategies, his own marketing and
communications company.
Hes single and lives in Crestwood. Bento enjoys travel, cooking and home
renovation in his free time.

How long have you been out and who

was the hardest person to tell?
Since senior year of college. The hardest
person to tell was my college girlfriend.
Someone had outed me to her, without
me realizing it. An awkward conversation
followed, but were still very close all
these years later.
Whos your LGBT hero?
Harvey Milk. Rodger MacFarlane.
Barbara Jordan.

Whats Washingtons best

nightspot, past or present?
The Fraternity House. Watching
Dynasty there in the old days was a
blast! Always friendly, always cruisy.

Describe your dream wedding.

The wedding that Kevin Kline threw
himself in the movie In & Out
comfortable, personal and just a little
o.

What non-LGBT issue are

you most passionate about?
Structural racism and the pervasive hold
it still has on American society.

What historical outcome

would you change?
The election of Ronald Reagan.
Coinciding with the AIDS crisis, he was
the wrong person in the wrong place at
the wrong time.

Whats been the most memorable pop

culture moment of your lifetime?
The death of Princess Diana.

On what do you insist?

Having people in my life who can tell me
when Im full of shit.

What was your last

Facebook post or Tweet?
An overheard bar line. I listen carefully
in bars, hear the most outrageous
things, then immediately post them on
Facebook. Theyve developed quite a
following.

If your life were a book,

what would the title be?
This Is Not a Dress Rehearsal

If science discovered a way

to change sexual orientation,
what would you do?
Deny it. If the Republicans can deny
climate change, we should be able to
deny any scientic discovery that would
make us less fabulous.

What do you believe in

beyond the physical world?
I believe theres something out there and
Im comfortable in the knowledge that
its unknowable.

Whats your advice for

LGBT movement leaders?
Realize that todays accomplishments
are based on the hard work and sacrice
of generations who came before you,
who took bigger risks and paid higher
prices than you have.

What would you walk

across hot coals for?
My dog, my family and my friends.

What LGBT stereotype

annoys you most?
That were all good dancers. Im horrible
like Elaine-from-Seinfeld horrible.
But I still love to dance.

Whats your favorite LGBT movie?

Victor/Victoria. Toddy was a great role
model for living life out loud, without
compromise.

Whats the most

overrated social custom?
Following back on Twitter.

What trophy or prize

do you most covet?
I really wanted to be Pope, but now that
Francis has given away all the Prada, Im
rethinking.

What do you wish youd known at 18?

How much fun was waiting just around
the corner.

Why Washington?
Its the best of both worlds a big
cosmopolitan city with interesting and
diverse people and a small town where
its easy to nd community.

Actor JOHN MOLETRESS discovered performance artist Holly Hughes while researching a book.

Moletress oers subversive

take on Clit Notes
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Sunday night at the Bier Baron Tavern
in Dupont Circle, John Moletress will slip
into a red dress and perform Clit Notes,
an hour-long autobiographical piece
originally done by lesbian performance
artist Holly Hughes in 1996.
Hughes is best known as part of the
NEA Four, a group of artists (three of
the four were gay) denied funding by the
National Endowment of the Arts in the
early 90s during the Bush administration
because the content of their work
much of which included gay themes
was considered objectionable. And while
the artists won their case, ultimately the
NEA ceased giving individual grants.
Though the NEA hullaballoo took place
when 30-something Moltress was just
a kid, he was intrigued when Rainbow
Theatre Project approached him to do a
staged reading of Hughes provocatively
named seminal piece. Because hes a queer
interdisciplinary artist with a penchant for
new and daring projects, it felt like a t.
Im channeling Holly, Moletress says.
The German pub atmosphere translates
into a downtown cabaret feel. The small
stage is in the corner, but I use the entire
room. At some point I expect to shout,
Please eat up, bitches. This is my rst
foray into dinner theater.
Clit Notes is a witty monologue
about Hughes coming-out process,
family relations and involvement in
performance art. Sunday nights event
will be Rainbow Theatre Projects second
tribute to the NEA Four. Earlier this month
they presented gay performance artist
Tim Millers My Queer Body.
My work isnt drag per se, Moletress
says. Drag typically situates itself in a
cabaret with a realness quality. Although
the young queens are highly experimental
and drag has moved away from pageantry
and to a more experimental mode. It can
be large and grotesque. What I do is closer
to the latter. I denitely play with gender.

And a lot of my work has mostly become

non-matrixed performance, which is to
say Im not playing a particular character
or transcribing a particular narrative. Just
combining things and seeing how people
interpret what Im doing.
Moletress became acquainted with
Hughes while working on his upcoming
book Imagining Home: Performance,
Practice and Space, an exploration of
home with writings from performance
artists including Holly Hughes, Penny
Arcade and Amanda Palmer, the singer
for punk-cabaret duo the Dresden Dolls.
Holly was pioneering performance art
at a time when politicians were censoring
artists. When artists needed to adhere
to a moral compass or they could not
be funded and had to sue to get grants,
he says. The idea of culture wars arent
wrapped in the same package today
but in this political climate language is
certainly on trial. And just think what
might happen to the arts if the wrong
people are voted into oce.
In connection with his books theme,
Moletress recently presented Home, a
live art installation in the front windows
of the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H
Street, N.E. As Lorraine, he spent hours
inside a toy-strewn home of sorts with
her queer son.
Lorraine has aspirations to be a
lounge singer, he says. Her look is all
over the gender map: sequined lounge
dress, 50s black wig, smeared makeup
like shes been crying for hours, hairy pits,
a bulge and no boobs. Eventually the tiny
space caused her to explode and she was
let loose in the Atlas lobby where people
didnt know what to make of her.
The hardest part of doing what he
does, says Moletress is nding aordable
venues. Hes contemplating a move to
Los Angeles, but in the meantime hell
continue making art here and teaching
Pilates and Barre classes at Vida Fitness.

TOM WOPAT today. The actor has enjoyed a varied career on stage and screen.

For actor Tom Wopat, its been a

fascinating journey from a dairy farm in
Wisconsin to the back roads of Hazzard
County, Ga., to the bright lights of
Broadway to an apple farm in Vermont.
In his latest movie, Wopat plays farmer
Richard Grant in Fair Haven, which will
receive its world premiere in Washington
this weekend.
They were looking for a farmer who
wasnt entirely a rube, and I guess I t
the bill kinda perfectly, he says. He runs
an apple farm thats been in the family
for a while and he totally expect his son
to embrace it. When things turn out
dierently, Wopat says, he sends his boy
away to straight camp.
Director Kerstin Karlhuber really did
know Wopat was perfect for the role as
soon as they met.
He actually read two scenes that he
had prepared. It was the rst time I saw
the character of Richard fully realized
and in the esh, she says. Tom was so
authentic it was as if he stepped right o
the farm and into the casting room.
Karlhuber says the complicated
relationship between Richard and his son
James is the centerpiece of the lm.
At the core, she says, its about a father
and son struggling to nd common ground
when their beliefs are polar opposites. Its
also about love. James is coming toterms
with his true identity in the face of societal
and familial pressure. He has to decide if
hell follow his heart or the path everyone
else seems to want for him.
Wopat has followed his heart through
a string of successes on television and
on Broadway. After graduating from the
University of Wisconsin he was cast in the
risqu Cy Coleman musical I Love My
Wife. During his successful run in that
show, Hollywood called.
In New York, he read for the role of
Bo Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard. He
ended up reading for the part of Luke

Duke, since John Schneider had already

been cast as Bo.
They had cast all the parts except
mine. They were searching for someone
who had a little more gravitas than John,
Wopat says. Im nine years older than
him and had a little more background
and was a little more mature.
He got the part and ten days later we
were shooting in Georgia.
Wopat followed his huge success
in Dukes (1979-1985) with a string
of successes on Broadway, including
performances in 42nd Street, Chicago,
City of Angels, Guys and Dolls, Catch
Me If You Can, and Sondheim on
Sondheim. During the run, Wopat earned
praise from Stephen Sondheim himself.
After rehearsing the endishly dicult
number Epiphany from Sweeney
Todd, the composer told Wopat, youd
be the perfect Sweeney.
He also received Tony Award
nominations for his work in Annie Get
Your Gun, where he starred opposite
a string of Annie Oakleys: Bernadette
Peters, Susan Lucci and Crystal Bernard,
and in A Catered Aair, with a book by
Harvey Fierstein. Wopat also received
excellent reviews when he played against
type as the luckless patsy James Lingk
in the 2005 revival of David Mamets
profanity-laced Glengarry Glen Ross.
Wopat was initially reluctant to take the role.
Its a small part and I dont normally do
small parts because it gives me too much
time to get in trouble, he says. I had
always played the leading man with a lot
of swagger. Lingk is a patsy. He gets taken
advantage of. There were times when I
walked ostage from my big scene with
Liev Schreiber and Alan Alda and Id be in
tears because my character realized hes
been totally duped. It was an eye-opening
experience and it changed my career.

RYAN KWANTEN, left, and MARCELO SERRADO tackle Sugarloaf Mountain in a gay segment from
Rio, I Love You.

Gay-inclusive umbrella piece

uneven but charming
By BRIAN T. CARNEY
Rio, I Love You is a beautiful collective
lm that brings together 10 directors
from around the globe to celebrate love
in many dierent guises throughout the
vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro.
As part of his Cities of Love project,
producer Emmanuel Benbihy weaves
together passionate stories about life in
dierent parts of the Brazilian city. Like all
anthology movies, the results are mixed,
but everyone will nd something to cheer
in this charming movie.
One of the most moving lms is I Think
Im In Love, directed by Stephan Elliott,
the openly gay Australian director of the
LGBT classic Priscilla, Queen of the
Desert. Inspired by the true story of how
he met his partner Wil Bevolley during
the publicity tour for Priscilla, the lm
stars Ryan Kwanten as the exhausted
international lm star Jai Arnott who only
wants to go to his hotel room and sleep.
Things change when he rst sees the
magnicent Sugarloaf Mountain.
He forces his bewildered driver Clio
(Marcelo Serrado) to climb the mountain
with him. The two men struggle up the
rocky side of the steep mountain and are
rewarded with splendid views of the city
at sunset and an unexpected visit from
Cupido (singer Bebel Gilberto).
Elliott tells his story well, paying equal
attention to the grueling spectacle of
the climb and the subtle changes in the
relationship between the two men (the
sequence may remind fans of the iconic
scene in Priscilla when the three
friends climb the Rock in full regalia).
The chemistry between Kwanten and
Serrado is strong and both men turn in
compelling performances.
The nal scene of Elliotts short
lm shows both the strength and the

weaknesses of Benbihys nal cut of

the entire lm. Benbihy literally weaves
the stories together, breaking up some
of the longer segments and providing
transitional material between them. For I
Think Im In Love, the break gives the story
some needed breathing room (although
inattentive viewers may miss the return
of the movie star and his driver). For other
segments, the stories lose momentum and
the transitional material is often confusing
and hard to follow.
Some of the other highlights include the
delicious La Fortuna directed by Paolo
Sorrentino and the wry The Miracle
directed by Nadine Labaki. The rst stars
American character actor Basil Homan
as the wealthy James who brings his wife
Dorothy (Emily Mortimer), a beautiful
former model, to Rio for a vacation. Chang
under his wifes tender care, the wheelchairbound James plots a bit of revenge when
the couple visit a secluded beach.
In The Miracle, Labaki and Harvey
Keitel are actors playing clerics in a movie
being shot in Rio. Their scenes on the
movie set are delightful and the scenes
exploring their professional and spiritual
dilemmas are well played. But the
seasoned pros are shamelessly upstaged
by Cau Antunes as a boy whos been
getting phone calls from Jesus. When the
visiting thespians discover that the Jesus
hes been talking to is not the Jesus
theyve been thinking about, the stars
nd a way to fulll his deepest desire.
Rio, I Love You is the third lm in
Benbihys Cities of Love project, following
movies set in Paris and New York. The
ambitious project, which will soon be
arriving in a new city, also includes a
mentorship program and social media
campaign promoting the city. While
the 10 lms in this installment are (not
unexpectedly) uneven, this trip to Rio
is worth taking. And a movie ticket is a
lot cheaper that a plane ticket to this
beautiful city full of many dierent kinds
of love.

M83 mastermind ANTHONY GONZALEZ has nally released the outts new project Junk.

New M83 album Junk

frothy but uneven
By CHRIS GERARD
Half a decade has passed since M83,
the project of vocalist, songwriter,
producer and electronics wizard Anthony
Gonzalez, released the landmark doublealbum Hurry Up, Were Dreaming and
its wonderfully ubiquitous international
hit Midnight City, a retro synthpop raveup that was a constant xture on global
danceoors for years after its release.
The album was one of the years most
acclaimed, scoring numerous mentions
on year-end critics list. In 2013, Gonzalez
released a soundtrack under the M83 name
for the lm Oblivion, but that didnt really
satisfy the need for a new M83 album. His
latest, the just-released Junk, is a frothy
electro feast for the senses that does have
some great moments, but is ultimately not
as compelling as it could have been.
Given that its been ve years since
Hurry Up, Were Dreaming, it is perhaps
not surprising there are some changes.
Longtime vocal collaborator Morgan
Kibby is no long with the project. Texasbased vocalist Kaela Sinclair, whom
Gonzalez discovered online, will handle
vocal duties on tour, while the album
features a bevy of vocalists including
Mai Lan (who appears on four tracks,
including the infectious single Go!),
19-year old newcomer Jordan Lawlor,
the exquisitely talented Swedish singer/
songwriter Susanne Sundfr, and Beck,
who appears on the track Time Wind.
The album was co-produced by the great
Justin Meldal-Johnsen, an Oregon-based
bassist, producer and songwriter of some
renown whos worked with giants like
Beck, Nine Inch Nails, Air, Garbage, Tori
Amos and many others.
When one must follow-up an album
widely perceived as a classic, it can be an
intimidating process, and unfortunately

although Junk does have its

moments Gonzalez isnt really up to
the challenge. The album is inconsistent
and at times maddening, even when it
tries hard to be likable. Junk opens with
the hyperkinetic rst single Do It, Try It,
a dynamic showcase for Gonzalez and his
studio trickerations with a prominent bass
line. Its clever, engaging and a natural for
the dance oor. Its also wise to open the
album with such an encouraging slide of
positivity in a world that increasingly can
use some smiles.
Do It, Try It is a fun teaser single,
but the second single, Solitude, is a
much more ambitious piece. At over
six minutes, its hypnotic and trippy
headphones music thats not particularly
commercial. As a slow burning piece, its
not about to light up the pop charts, but
its admirable for Gonzalez to show some
versatility and artistic depth. Solitude
almost has a prog-rock vibe -- theres a
keening synthesizer solo that wouldnt
be out of place on something ELP or Yes
mightve put out on the 70s. The sonic
textures are there, but whats missing
from Solitude is much in the way of
melodic interest.
As for potential pop and dance-oor
success, the third single Go! is the real
deal and probably the albums best hope
for a major hit. Its a glimmering electropop gem with a terric vocal by Mai Lan.
The chorus is engaging and singable. Go!
really should have been the albums lead
single. Junk hasnt exactly jetted up the
international charts, and perhaps Go!
would have helped had it been released
in advance of the album.
While Junk stays within the lines of
electronic pop, there is some blurring.
Moon Crystal sounds like a television
theme-song for some cheesy 80s
romantic comedy that maybe lasted half
a season before being banished forever.
Its a curious inclusion to say the least.

Expect challenge if you

want to stay married

MICHAEL RADKOWSKY, Psy.D. is a licensed

psychologist who works with gay individuals
and couples in D.C. He can be found online
at personalgrowthzone.com. All identifying
information has been changed for reasons
of condentiality. Have a question? Send it to
Michael@personalgrowthzone.com.

MICHAEL,
Is it possible to fall back in love with
someone after youve lost interest?
Jean and I met 12 years ago in our
freshman year at a campus lesbian
group. Weve been through a lot together:
coming out to our families, getting
married in Massachusetts, ghting for
equality and social justice, and the last
few years building a life in DC.
But we are both really dierent from
who we were when we met. Jean has
become conventional.
Im not interested in pop culture, in
parenthood (now at the top of Jeans
list due to biological clock issues), in the
endless oce politics of her job or in
pretty much everything else she likes to
focus on. I have a cool job that takes me
all over the world and I just feel like Ive
moved beyond Jean and our life.
Im guilty of not saying any of this to
Jean because I dont want to hurt her
feelings.
Im worried that if I leave her, shell
be alone. I know shed hate that and I
worry she might never meet someone
with whom she could have a better
connection. I do care about her and want
her to have a good future.
We were so proud and happy when we
got married and we were uber involved in
the marriage equality movement. I know
I made vows for life, but now I feel like I
obligated myself to a boring marriage
that I dont want to be in. While part of
me hopes that my feelings can change,
mostly I want to be done and move on.
MICHAEL REPLIES:
When you married Jean, did you think
that you would never face challenges?
Being in a committed relationship
means building a life with someone
who is dierent from you in major ways,
who keeps changing in unpredictable
directions, just as you change. Were
talking one challenge after another,
guaranteed.

A D V I CE

No matter how compatible the two of

you may seem at rst, any partner will
eventually disappoint you in some way or
another.
Are you done with Jean or are you
simply concerned that you cant stay
happily married to someone who has
changed in ways you dont like?
Not only is it possible to be happy with
someone who annoys you, lets you down
or even bores you in some major ways, it
is actually necessary to gure out how to
do this if you want to be married.
But you have to drop the fantasy that
there is someone else out there with
whom youll always be compatible, whom
you will always nd fascinating. Even
if you leave Jean and meet someone
new, youre eventually going to have to
gure out how to deal with change and
disappointment, as will your partner.
You certainly dont have to stay with
Jean no matter how dierent the two of
you become. But it doesnt sound like
youre exploring how you might remedy
the situation before you take o your ring
for good.
Commitment means doing your
best to work through diculties and
improve things before deciding that
your relationship is unworkable. If you
have some interest in maintaining your
commitment to this marriage, I think
you have shot at creating a far more
interesting, vibrant relationship.
One of the top reasons that
relationships go downhill and become
boring is that people stop taking risks
with each other. And the biggest risk of all
may be talking about how you both are
changing.
Why arent you speaking with Jean
about how youre struggling to deal with
this?
Yes, the consequences of addressing
how youre struggling can be huge. But
if you dont share who you are and what
youre thinking, if you walk on eggshells,
you drain the intimacy and vitality out of
your relationship. Everything shuts down,
just as you are now experiencing.
If you are going to be married to Jean
or to anyone youre going to have to
make far more of an eort to create an
interesting relationship. It is your job, just
as it is hers, to let your spouse know you;
to take risks; to be honest, forthcoming
and exible; to push boundaries; to
question assumptions; and to do your
best to deal with change.
Im also curious about Jeans seeming
metamorphosis from vibrant gal to
Dullsville. Maybe she, like you, is trying
to keep things safe by wearing a mask of
blandness instead of letting you see who
she is actually becoming as she journeys
through adulthood.

Local womens football team

enjoying winning season
By KEVIN MAJOROS
The Washington Prodigy is a full-tackle,
local womens football team thats a
member of the Independent Womens
Football League. It was formed in 2012 and
its 2-0 two games into its current season.
This week in the ongoing Blade series
spotlighting rookies and veterans in local
sports leagues, we shine a light on two
gay players on the Prodigy team.
Aisha Sandidge grew up in Fort
Washington and played soccer along
with a year of track & eld in high school.
Her football career began while she was
attending Drexel University where she
took up intramural ag football.
After moving back to the D.C. area
in 2010, she joined a co-ed ag football
league and by the end of 2011 was
playing in a womens league. Sandidge
had a few friends on the Prodigy who
were encouraging her to join, but she
wasnt ready to commit.
This year I wanted to try something
dierent and do something new, Sandidge
says. Once I met more of the players on
the team, I knew it was the right choice.
Sandidge went out for tryouts in
November of 2015 and the subsequent
player and coach camps. Her position is wide
receiver and so far in the rst two games of
her rookie season, she has only played on
special teams. She knows the time will come
when she will get more game time.
More than one-third of the players this
year are rookies and when we started
practicing, you couldnt feel the dierence
between the rookies and veterans,
Sandidge says. Ive been on other teams
where the rookies get pushed aside. I
dont feel that with the Prodigy.
Sandidge, who works in the construction
industry as a project engineer, says she is
itching to get in there and for now she
is enjoying the give and take between the

players.
Playing football is a great stress
reliever for me, Sandidge says. I want
to challenge myself to be a better athlete
and a better person.
Veteran player Bukola Landis-Aina is
one of the original players on the team
and isnt looking to retire anytime soon.
There are too many things about the
game that are still keeping her engaged.
When I am playing, I feel like there is
nothing else going on in the world, LandisAina says. If I got stagnant, I would be less
interested but I am still getting better.
Born in Philadelphia, Landis-Aina grew
up playing basketball, volleyball and
softball. Her parents ended her sports
participation in high school in hopes that
she would make it to the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology.
She more than made it. Landis-Aina
completed her degree in chemical
engineering at MIT while being a
member of the varsity track & eld team
specializing in shot put and the hammer
throw. She followed that up with a law
degree from New York University.
After moving to D.C. in 2006 to work
in patent litigation, Landis-Aina joined
a co-ed ag football league, segued to a
womens league and then to full-contact
football. She spent two-and-a-half years
with the D.C. Divas and one year with the
Baltimore Nighthawks until the Prodigy
was formed in 2012. She is also still
playing ag football.
Playing for me is all about physically
pushing myself as an athlete, Landis-Aina
says. I also love the team camaraderie and
the feeling of having my teammates backs.
Landis-Aina, who plays center and multiple
oensive line positions, was a captain last
year and enjoys the responsibilities of being
one of the veteran players.
I feel that need to step up, be on time,
be a leader in drills, you know, the front
of the line, Landis-Aina says. I want to be
there to uplift my teammates.

Chenoweth channels early

feminist in new Lippa work
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 35

for the Broadway musical The Addams

Family, wrote the music and lyrics for the
acclaimed Big Fish, and won the 2000
Drama Desk Award for best music for
The Wild Party.
He also wrote original music for the
1999 revival of Youre A Good Man,
Charlie Brown (including My New
Philosophy for Tony Award-winner
Chenoweth), which led to friendship.
Part choral work, part theater piece,
I Am Harvey Milk weaves the story of
Harvey Milks life, from boyhood to his rise
as the rst openly gay man to hold public
oce in California to his assassination.
I fashioned the whole thing and we
performed it for three concerts in June of
2013, Lippa says. What was remarkable
about the timing is that June 26 was our
rst performance and it was the day
that the Supreme Court struck down
Proposition 8 and that night we premiered
Harvey Milk two blocks away from where
Harvey and (San Francisco Mayor) George
Moscone had been gunned down.
Although he cant pinpoint the exact
time he learned about Milk, Lippa guesses
he was in college. He says its important
that others discover his story.
One of the things I feel as a middle-aged
gay man, as opposed to being a young gay
man, is that at 51, its my responsibility to
further the story of one our gay heroes,
he says. As I got older, I had a very strong
awareness of Harvey Milk and his story
was very important to me.
Lippa played Harvey Milk in that
production,
which
included
300
singers, three principals and a 27-piece
orchestra in front of 1,600 screaming San
Franciscans for three nights in a row.
I thought once it was done, that would
be it, but it didnt go that way, he says.
I kept getting requests to do it, and
producers in New York called, and we did
it at Lincoln Center in 2014 with me and
Kristin and the Orchestra of St. Lukes.
The one request Lippa constantly faced
was from people asking if there was a way
to make the one-hour piece a full-length
production, a notion he wrestled with.
I constructed it in such a way that it was
the right length and right pieces and it just
didnt want to get any longer. To me, this
was just an hour-long work, he says.
But then, Lippa came across the story
of 17th-century Puritan activist Anne
Hutchinson and inspiration hit.
I realized that here was this other person
in American history who I could connect to
Harvey Milk in a very unexpected way, he
says. She wasnt talking about gay rights or
any rights frankly. She just wanted the right
to peacefully assemble in her home and

teach other women stories from the Bible.

Hutchinson was accused of heresy and
banished from the Massachusetts Bay
Colony and Lippa saw the obvious link
with Milk.
I cant happen without my parents,
my gay life cant happen without my gay
heroes, my music cant happen without
Stephen Sondheim and Gershwin and
Beethoven and Bach, and Harvey Milk
wasnt possible without Anne Hutchinson,
Lippa says. Even though 350 years divide
them, she was the rst woman to stand up
in 1637 and say, No, it has to be dierent.
She was punished for it terribly, as was
Harvey Milk. Theres the link.
Lippa went about writing her story and
thus I Am Anne Hutchinson/I Am Harvey
Milk which is one production, not two
separate entities was born.
He had Chenoweth in mind as he wrote.
As soon as I discovered Annes story,
I called her and told her about it and she
said (in his best Chenoweth impression),
Id do anything you write for me, Lippa
says. We have had a great creative back
and forth going on 20 years now and
shes not only performing it, but I actually
wrote it for her to do.
Chenoweth told the Blade in a January
interview she connects with Hutchinson
whom she was basically persecuted for
being a thinking Christian woman.
In some ways, I can relate, Chenoweth
said. Andrew has been a huge part of my
history and Ive been somewhat of a muse
for him. What can I say? I fall in love with his
music every time he plays, so Im honored
hes written yet another thing for me.
The show will be fully staged, with
costumes, projections and plenty of
actors and dancers, but because its in the
music hall, there are no sets.
Its epic storytelling but not a concert
version. Its the rst time we have ever
done it, and Strathmore has been
incredible working with us letting us do
what we want to do, Lippa says. We will
have 200 people on stage and we will nd
out if that is the size it should be. We may
take it to opera houses or if not, scale it
down and go to theaters. This piece will
tell us what it is.
The performances will benet both
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and
theNational Womens History Museum.

Myth: We have to get married to protect ourselves

Debunking misconceptions
of estate planning
By LAWRENCE S. JACOBS
This is the second in a series of seven articles to
help you understand what you do know, dont
know and should know about estate planning.

Let me be clear as I can be about this:

You do not have to be married to enjoy
a broad range of protections, but you do
have to work harder to get them.
Sure, we fought hard for marriage, in part
because marriage makes it easier to protect
your family. Nevertheless, now as before,
tying the knot isnt right for everybody
or even required in order for your partner
to be protected under the law. There are
good and valid reasons why some couples
choose not to marry. Back when marriage
wasnt an option, we were forced to create
estate-planning tactics that, fortunately,
still work for unmarried couples. Depending on whether you live in D.C., Virginia or
Maryland, the rights available to unmarried
couples are very different.
Healthcare power of attorney. The
good news is that all of our local jurisdictions allow you to name your partner as
the person who will make healthcare decisions for you if you cant. You achieve that
with a healthcare power of attorney, and
it is essential. Without it, your protections
vary depending on where you live, and
that can be bad news. In Maryland you
may be able to get that decision-making
power but only if you can prove that

you are a domestic partner by supplying

an affidavit and supporting documents.
In D.C., you can still register as domestic
partners, which for most purposes gives
you the same rights as married couples.
Virginia is the most problematic. Under
current Virginia law, including the infamous Affirmation of Marriage Act, there is
no legal recognition of our relationships.
There, without a healthcare power of attorney, your nearest relative may make
those decisions, whether youve been with
your partner for six months or 50 years.
Financial power of attorney. This
ones easy. In all of our jurisdictions, a financial power of attorney is required for
your partner to be able to manage your
finances if you cant. Surprisingly, thats
also true for married couples.
Wills. Fortunately, there is no restriction in D.C., Virginia or Maryland on your
right to leave assets to your partner in a
will if you die. Without a will, though, the
outcomes can be very unhappy. If you die
without a will in Maryland or Virginia, your
partner will inherit nothing at all. In the
District, your partner would only inherit if
you were registered as domestic partners.
Because of that, it is most critical that unmarried couples have up-to-date wills.
There also are differences in the estate tax
treatment of unmarried couples depending on the jurisdiction in which you live,
but that very complicated subject is more
than I can cover in this short space.
My clients frequently asked me whether
they should get married. Its a question
that makes me uncomfortable because, as

You dont have to get married to protect your assets.

a lawyer, my job is to advise my clients on

the rights that accrue from marriage and
the pitfalls that go with it, but not to push
them into any particular type of relationship. Yet I take my title as attorney and
counselor at law quite seriously. There
are times where getting married can create serious problems. Combining the incomes of two high-earning individuals will
generally result in larger income tax bills
than if the couple were unmarried. Yet,
that is not universally true because the
tax code is so complicated. If youre worried about your situation, then you should
ask your accountant to run projections as
to what your tax returns would look like if

you were married as opposed to two individuals filing separately. Other factors
come into play when one partner has high
income or large assets and the other does
not. Ill tackle ways to deal with some these
issues later in this series.
(This column is not intended to provide legal advice, but only general guidance that may or may
not be applicable to your specific situation.)
