Tarkio R-I Board of Education hires

new elementary principal

and said she was nervous,

but excited. I asked Candace
about some very irrelevent

The Tarkio R-I School

Board met Thursday, April
21, 2016, at Tarkio High
School. The meeting was
called to order at 7:00 p.m.
Present were Tarkio R-I
Superintendent Dr. Pat
Martin, Tarkio High School
Principal Luke Cox, Carrie Livengood, Steve Klute,
Bruce Lang, Jamie Barnett,
Lydia Hurst, Rachel Graves,
Chris Yates, Corey Lesher,
and Amy Fast.
Districts obligations were
approved. The board members also approved summer
school tutoring. The meeting

moved into closed session at

7:04 p.m. and came out of
closed session at 9:11 p.m.
Rachel moved and Lydia
seconded to terminate Amy
Fasts contract: Rachel yes, Lydia - yes, Steve - yes,
Corey - yes, Chris - yes, Jamie - yes and Bruce Lang
abstained. Rachel moved
and Bruce seconded to approve Dr. Deborah Taylor as
the new elementary principal for the 2016-2017 school
year. The motion carried 7-0.
The meeting adjourned at
9:45 p.m.

Bureau attend Youth Leadership Day

Seriously? Having fun with

Candace Campbell

Meet the fun loving, all
around goofy senior girl,
Candace Campbell! If you
really know her, you already
know that her favorite expression is Seriously?
Candace is the daughter of
Jason and Ruth Campbell
of Tarkio. Candace has one
sibling, Dylan, who is a fifth
grader at Tarkio Elementary. Candace wanted to
mention her grandmother,
Becky Campbell, too. She
also wanted to give a shoutout to Jordyn Swalley, Ally
Harkrider, and Paige Agnew,
her best friends. I asked her
if she wanted to include anyone else and she said her
dog, Max. She just cant get
over how much he loves to
escape from his pen.
Candace has been in the
Tarkio R-I School District
since she was in Honey
Tree at the Tarkio United
Methodist Church. She has
played a huge role in our
class from the very beginning. Most of our class memories are because of her!
Speaking of memories, Candace states that her favorite childhood memory was
helping her grandma Becky
cook delicious food. Candace
has been involved in the local Special Olympics team,
The Shining Stars, for four
years. She enjoys playing
basketball and is successful
in her track event, throwing. She likes to brag about
all the medals she receives
after kickin butt.
Candace can be found
rocking out to her favorite
singer, Justin Bieber. She
even got the opportunity to
see J.B. perform live a few
weeks back. She recalls it
was the greatest time of her

life. Candace and her best

friend, Jordan, like to hangout on their free days and
play dolls until the sun sets.
She also told me that she
likes to write in her diary
when she is by herself. Candace is just like any modernday teenage girl who enjoys
her favorite television shows
and movies. She likes to
hang out with Sheldon and
Penny while watching her
favorite T.V. show, The Big
Bang Theory. Her favorite
movie is Brats and of course
her favorite kind of music is
any music that comes from
Justin Bieber. Candace likes
to munch down on mashed
potatoes while watching the
K.C. Royals or K.C. Chiefs
with her dad. She has always been about reading
and her favorite series is
the Goosebump books. Even
though scary movies gives
her goosebumps, she doesnt
mind scaring herself while
reading a good book. Candace couldnt pick out a favorite memory from high
school because she has way
too many. After a few examples, she decided that the
Justin Bieber concert was
her all time favorite (go figure). She will also never forget the time when her best
guy friend, Connor Shaw,
asked her to her senior prom.
She told me that that was
a dream come true. Talking about Connor, her most
embarrassing moments are
when her best friend Jordan
teases her about Connor.
Candaces plans after
high school are still undecided, but she is looking forward to graduation. After
talking about the last few
days of her senior year slowing down, she was all smiles

Tarkio High School seniors

preparing for end-of-school events
The 2015-16 school year
is nearing its end and with
that comes end-of-school
events for Tarkio High
School seniors. The students
will be extremely busy these
last two months.
Jr./Sr. Prom
Seniors will be attending
their last Tarkio High School
Junior/Senior Prom on Saturday, April 30, from 8 to 11
p.m. at the Tarkio Community Building. A promenade,
which is open to the public,
will take place at 7 p.m.
at the Tarkio High School
Gym. The promenade will
allow for all parents, family,
and community members to
take pictures of all prom attendees.
Baccalaureate
Seniors will participate
in a baccalaureate service,
sponsored by the Tarkio/
Westboro Ministerial Alliance, on Sunday, May 1. A
dinner for the seniors and
their parents and grandparents will be held at the
Tarkio Assembly of God
Church at 6 p.m., followed
by the service at 7 p.m. Seniors are to wear their caps
and gowns.
SPRING CONCERT
The Tarkio Junior High
Band and Choir and Tarkio
Elementary 5th and 6th
Grade Band Concert will be
held Wednesday, May 4, at
6:00 p.m. in the auditorium.
The THS Spring Concert
and Awards Night for the
high school band and choir
will also be on May 4, but
will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the
auditorium.

Class pictures
They will also be asked
to don their caps and gowns
again on Friday, May 6, for
professional class and individual pics at 1 p.m. at the
school. This day also marks
the last day of school for the
seniors.
SENIOR TRIP
On Sunday, May 8, the
seniors will embark on their
senior trip to Branson, MO.
The students are to arrive
at 7:30 a.m. and the bus
will leave at 8 a.m. sharp.
The students will return on
Wednesday, May 11.
PRACTICE
On Thursday, May 12,
from 8 to 11:30 a.m., the
seniors will practice their
walk-ins into the THS Gym
for the graduation ceremony.
All seniors must attend this
practice.
AWARDS ASSEMBLY
On Friday, May 13, the
seniors will again meet in
the gym at 8 a.m. for a walkthrough before being treated to breakfast at the Tarkio
United Methodist Church.
At 1 p.m., the senior awards
assembly will begin in the
gym. (seniors are to meet
at 12:30 p.m. in Mrs. Wennihans room). Attendance is
required by the seniors and
family and friends are also
invited.
GRADUATION
The graduation ceremony
will take place on Sunday,
May 15, at 2 p.m. in the
THS Gym. The seniors are
to meet in Mrs. Wennihans
room between 1 and 1:30
p.m.

It was a busy day for 425

high school students and
their chaperones who were
involved in the Missouri
Farm Bureau Youth Leadership Day April 14, 2016.
For 22 years, the event has
brought students and their
legislators together at the
State Capitol. Youth Leadership Day is sponsored by
the Missouri Farm Bureau
Promotion and Education.
Students were able to visit when both the House and
Senate chambers were in
session. Some groups chatted with their senators and
representatives in hallways
just ouside the chambers.
Others were introduced
from the House and Senate
floors. In many ways, the
visitors found out how hectic and important the business of lawmaking can be.
By the busload, the group
returned to Missouri Farm
Bureau headquarters for
lunch and a MFB welcome
by Missouri Farm Bureau

President Blake Hurst. They

also heard from University
of Missouri students and
Farm Bureau Ambassadors
Austin Stanton of Centralia
and Nora Faris of Concordia before a special talk by
featured speaker Samantha Warner. Warner stated
that almost everything is
connected to what she calls
Team Agriculture. There
are so many different options in agriculture...Follow your passion, find your
place, and find a place on
the Agriculture Team that
fits your passion.
Students attending from
Atchison County were Tarkio
students Ethan Riley, Karlly
Eyman, and Kris Riley with
advisor Dustin Lambertsen,
as well as Fairfax students
Gage Crowley and Alyssa
Beck with advisor Jeremy
Palmer. Costs for the school
trip are underwritten by
county Farm Bureaus and
the MFB Foundation for Agriculture.

Quimby participates in Service Day

Kaleigh Quimby, a freshman psychology major from
Tarkio, was one of the 700
volunteers from Central
Methodist University who
did their part on Thursday, April 7, 2016, to, in the
words of the CMU mission
statement, make a difference in the world.
The University called off
classes for its annual Service
Day, when students, faculty
and staff are encouraged to
engage in volunteer activities to support a variety of

causes. Event coordinator

Matt Williams, associate
director for CMUs Center
for Faith and Service, estimated CMU dedicated more
than 1,700 hours this year.
Quimby volunteered with
the Psychology Club at a local home. The Service Day
projects included yard work
at various homes, work at
the food bank in Columbia,
volunteering at Fayette
Head Start, sewing pillow
cases for children who are
battling cancer, and more.
