Pioneers in Materials Testing

Established in 1990, Cooper Technology is a British company and one of the world leaders in the design and manufacture of
high performance testing equipment for asphalt, bitumen, concrete, cement, soil and aggregates testing equipment used
in civil engineering.
The Nottingham Asphalt Tester (NAT), designed in the 1980s by our Chairman Keith Cooper whilst working at the University of
Nottingham, was the first of its type. Since then our product range has increased steadily and now includes Gyratory Compactors
and Roller Compactors to prepare and compact specimens in addition to Servo-Hydraulic and Servo-Pneumatic Universal Testers,
Triaxial Testers, Fatigue Systems and Wheel Trackers to perform standards.

Why Choose Cooper?

GLOBAL SUPPLIER THAT IS LOCAL ENOUGH TO CARE
As a customer focused business, we listen. The Cooper Technology approach is to first establish customer requirements and
then to offer best advice on the options available in order that customers can make informed decisions. We pride ourselves on
working in partnership with customers rather than just order taking. Our consultative approach ensures that the application
is fully understood before an order is accepted, thus ensuring the equipment ordered is fit for purpose and will deliver the
expected results and reliably day after day and year after year.

DESIGN, DEVELOP, AUTOMATE, TEST

Cooper Technology is much more than a manufacturer: all our machines are fully designed and developed by our dedicated
in-house design team, all our engineers are degree educated in their relevant fields, and every engineering discipline is covered.
Mechanical Design via the use of 3D CAD packages we ensure our business is best positioned to utilise the most state-of-theart geometrical modelling systems available. These systems further permit calculating customer specific solutions within the

markets. We unequivocally state our core values because we want them practised throughout the organisation and understood
by our employees, partners, customers and all stake holders.

Our people are fundamental to our growth. It is our strong belief that the skills, diversity and dedication of our people are key to
our success. The global nature of our customers and our business means that our people have to be capable of teamwork across
geographies. They need to be flexible and open minded, to have world-class capabilities and shared values.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
Continuous Improvement is integral to our success to date. We relentlessly pursue excellence in products, processes and
services. We believe things can always be improved. We endeavour to encourage innovation, creativity, taking calculated risks
and trying new things. Our company fosters passion of innovation and we believe that Continuous Improvement needs to be
integrated into our everyday business. We encourage our employees to leave everything they touch a little better.

Quality Assurance
When choosing Cooper Technology as your business partner, you are also selecting
our international reputation for competence, integrity and innovation. Each item of
equipment is subject to rigorous quality tests at every stage of its design and manufacture
to ensure that we provide our customers with an outstanding product.
Quality is fundamental to our activity; it not only relates to the final product but extends
also to the systems we employ. Our systems are internationally recognised via ISO
9001:2008. Our certified partner in helping us achieve this recognition is BSI (British
Standards Institute). For over 100 years, BSI has led the way in developing the concept
of standards and ensuring that they are relevant to your business. No other certification
body can offer the expertise, knowledge and recognition that is associated with a BSI
certificate.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Organisations, like individuals, depend for their survival, sustenance and growth on the support
and goodwill of the communities of which they are an integral part, and must pay back this
generosity in every way they can
We strongly believe that our primary obligation or duty as corporate entity is to our stakeholders
we are just as mindful of the fact that this imperative does not exist in isolation; it is part of
a much larger compact which we have with our entire body of stakeholders- from employees,
customers, business partners, eco-system, local communities, and to society at large.
For us, being socially responsible is not an occasional act of charity or that one-time token
financial contribution to the local school, hospital or environmental NGO. It is an ongoing
year-round commitment, which is integrated into the very core of our business objectives and
strategy.
Because we believe that there is no contradiction between doing well and doing right. Indeed,
doing right is a necessary condition for doing well.
Cooper engages with Colts to Africa
MANUFACTURE ECO-FRIENDLY EQUIPMENT
to help underpriviliged children
Although it is very challenging to manufacture eco-friendly testing equipment for asphaltic and unbound materials, however our
engineers endeavour to work on more energy efficient designs and manufacture energy efficient testing equipment.
As part of our overall commitment to corporate social responsibility, Cooper Technology developed its first eco-friendly testing
equipment called Auto Lift Arm ECO Wheel Tracker in 2010. It is small and compact machine for maximum energy efficiency.
AUTO LIFT ARM ECO WHEEL TRACKER IS 28% MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT THAN ITS PEER WHEEL TRACKING MACHINES.

RESPECT FOR ENVIRONMENT

We understand the importance of environment. At Cooper Technology we try to minimise waste and take every single and even
simple steps like switching off the lights and equipment when not needed, switching off computer monitors during the night,
avoid printing unnecessary emails and recycling paper. We have cut-down hardcopy catalogue printing by 85% and prefer to
promote our product digitally.

Remote Support Service

What do people think about us?

Cooper Technology provides an easy access, cost effective remote service support program that allows us to fix many issues on
your computer, and Cooper testing equipment, from the comfort of your laboratory or business. All you need to do is download
our custom remote support program and we will do the rest. Once work is completed all traces of the program are removed and
we are unable to access your computer again until you initiate the connection. All connections from our office to your system are
encrypted so you can rest easily knowing that your information is completely safe.

It is very important for us to know your opinion about our products, processes and services. We value your comments and
suggestions, it helps us to peruse excellence in products, processes and services. If you have any comments or suggestions
please feel free to write to us: info@cooper.co.uk.

We can fix a large range of problems remotely including, but not limited to:
Software problems
Installation of programs
Software patches
Software upgrades
Maintenance
Program configuration

- Jon Watson Laboratory Manager, NTEC, University of Nottingham

This is just a small list of what can be accomplished remotely and, best of all, you dont even have to be at the system once you
run the program.

Calibration Services
British scientist Lord Kelvin is quoted from his lecture to the Institution of Civil Engineers, 3 May 1883 as saying:

I often say that if you can measure what you are speaking about and express it in numbers you know something about it; but when you
cannot express it in numbers your knowledge is a meagre and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge but you have
scarcely, in your thoughts, advanced to the stage of science, whatever the matter may be.
This famous quote emphasises the importance that measurement has in science, industry and commerce.
Prior to dispatch, where appropriate, each piece of our test equipment is calibrated by qualified engineers
using procedures and equipment which is scrutinised annually by the United Kingdom Accreditation
Service (UKAS). The International Laboratory Cooperation (ILAC) links UKAS with accreditation bodies
worldwide. All equipment needs to be UKAS calibrated and traceable to national standards in order
to satisfy typed testing as described in the EN13108. Although equipment from Cooper Technology
normally continues to perform correctly and produce accurate results for many years, over time and
through application there could be some component wear and the output from electronic components
may drift. A highways material laboratory is not an ideal environment for instruments that must, in some
cases, measure displacements within accuracies in excess of one millionth of a metre.

I would like to comment on how impressed we are with the new Wheel Tracker ECO Small Device since
we purchased the machine beginning this year. It has been in constant use. The benefit that we have
seen in that this version is fully automated from start to finish, compared to the standard 1 arm wheel
tracker, which is quite a bit labour intensive where you have to physically place the arm/wheel on the
specimen, wait until test temp is achieved before starting the test, and lifting the wheel off the specimen
at the end of the test. Our technicians also find our software a lot more user friendly.
- Dyfed Thomas Laboratory Manager, Celtest Ltd UK

We would like to express our gratitude for organising such a wonderful and excellently conducted
technical training session providing us with a lot of valuable information and knowledge, letting us
work more effectively and offer higher standards of our services.
- Dominik Jutkowiak Viateco Ltd, Poland

The Benefits of Calibration

To comply with your internal quality assurance policy and to demonstrate a disciplined commitment to sound laboratory
management.
To have the confidence that your test equipment continues to function
correctly and to ensure that it maintains the required level of
measurement accuracy you would expect.
To enhance your customers confidence in a reliable and accurate
testing service.
To gain national and international recognition of your testing and to
help you to access foreign markets where laboratory accreditation is
compulsory.
The equipment needs checking and calibrating at least annually by one
of our fully trained, UKAS approved engineers from Cooper Technology
Calibration Division. On completion of the calibration, our engineer will
provide you with an update on the condition of the equipment, together
with a traceable calibration certificate.

Complexlab have sold a number of Cooper equipment in the past 10 years, we find the product quality
and service we receive to be of an exception level.
- Sos Andrs Managing Director, COMPLEXLAB KFT

TG-0411 AND TG-0412 SIEVE SHAKERS

TG-0411 and TG-0412 impart a circular motion to the material
being sieved so that it makes a slow progression over the
surface of the sieve. They are ideal for on-site and heavy
duty applications when heavy or large bulk samples are to be
analysed.
The sieve shakers are equipped with a dynamic power source
which ensures the right vibration is imparted to the sieves and
sample for fast, accurate and reproducible tests. The vertical
movement is fixed to ensure the sample spends maximum
time on the sieve surface. The unique vibratory action also
helps keep the apertures clear and free from binding.
The Sieve Shakers are fitted with a very efficient clamping
device that ensures sieves are held firmly without overtightening and allows them to be quickly removed and
replaced. The timer can be preset for any duration up to 60
minutes. The TG-0412 model has the additional frequency
adjustment facility.

The TG-0413 sieve shaker is fitted with an efficient clamping

device that ensures sieves are held firmly without over
tightening and allows them to be quickly removed and
replaced.
Non corrodible, non metallic springs are fitted making the
shaker maintenance free. The shaker is fitted with a timer
which can be preset for any duration up to 60 minutes.
This unit will accept 200mm to 400mm diameter sieves. Wet
sieving kits in the appropriate sizes may be used with this
shaker.
The TG-0413 sieve shaker has been specially designed to
operate with heavy samples without loss of performance. It
is equipped with a dynamic power source which ensures the
right vibration is imparted to the sieves and sample for fast,
accurate and reproducible tests. The vertical movement is
fixed to ensure the sample spends maximum time seeking
apertures rather than being suspended in mid air. The unique
vibratory action also helps keep the apertures clear and free
from binding.
The TG-0413 Sieve Shaker imparts a circular motion to the
material being sieved so that it makes a slow progression over
the surface of the sieve. It is ideal for on site and heavy duty
applications. When heavy or large bulk samples need to be
analysed its important to use a shaker that is built for the job.
Sieve Capacity: 15 pieces of 200 mm sieves + pan and cover;

EN 1097-8 : 2009; BS 812 : Partie 113 : 1990

DESCRIPTION
Aggregate Abrasion Machine determines the Aggregate
Abrasion Value by testing the measure of the resistance of
aggregate to surface wear by abrasion.
Two specimens are pressed against the surface of a steel disc
rotating in a horizontal plane, with a force of 0.365 Newtons
per sq. centimetre. Sand, fed by hoppers, is used as an
abrasive. After 500 disc revolutions the amount of material
abraded is measured by calculation of the weight loss of the
aggregate.
The percentage loss in mass of chippings as known as the
Aggregate Abrasion Value (AAV), and ranges from about 1 for
hard flints to over 16 for aggregates normally considered too
soft for use in road surfacing.
CRT-AAM-AGG should be ordered separately.

DESCRIPTION

DESCRIPTION

The Cooper-Wessex Pendulum Skid Tester CRT-PENDULUM

is high quality skid resistance testing equipment. Originally
designed in the 1940s in the US, the instrument was further
developed in the 1960s at the UK Transport Research
Laboratory for the testing of road surfaces.

Accelerated Polishing Machine is used to produce polished

stone samples of aggregates used in road surfaces, to simulate
actual road conditions.
In 1950 increased traffic flow and higher speeds, together with
concerns about road safety led to research into the relationship
between road materials and skid-resistance. Research at the
UK Transport Road Research Laboratory showed a significant
relationship between polishing of aggregates used in road
surfaces and skid resistance. Tests were devised using an
Accelerated Polishing Machine and a friction measuring device
(known as the Pendulum Skid Tester, also supplied by Cooper,
to determine (PSV) Polished Stone Value).
Fourteen specimen aggregate samples are clamped around
a rotating Road Wheel. These samples are subjected to two
timed stages of abrasive polishing under a loaded rubber tyre.
First by Corn Emery grit, and secondly by Flour Emery powder.
Accessories/consumables are not included in the price of the
main device and may be purchased separately if required.

The CRT-PENDULUM measures the frictional resistance

between a rubber slider mounted on the end of a pendulum
arm and the test surface. This provides highway engineers
with a routine method of checking the resistance of wet and
dry surfaces to slipping and skidding, both in the lab and on
site.
It is based on the Izod principle: a pendulum rotates about a
spindle attached to a vertical pillar. At the end of the tubular
arm a head of known mass is fitted with a rubber slider.
The pendulum is released from a horizontal position so that
it strikes the sample surface with a constant velocity. The
distance travelled by the head after striking the sample is
determined by the friction of the sample surface. A reading of
Skid Resistance is obtained.

DESCRIPTION
The TC-1035 Semi-Automatic Grinding Machine provides fast
grinding of cylinder specimen ends to obtain plane and
parallel surfaces according to EN and ASTM standards. The ony
difference between automatic machine and semi-automatic
machine is that the cradle of the semi-automatic machine is
moved toward the
grinding wheel by
the user.
All grinding process
is automatic except
the movement of
the cradle for semiautomatic machine.
The optimum cycle
to be applied by the
user is 5-6 cycle/
per minute. Three
units of 38 to 100
mm or two units
of 150-160 mm
concrete
cylinders
ends can be ground
simultaneously with
the suitable cradle
and water restraint
panel. The length of
the specimen must
be longer than 70
mm.
The Planeness and the perpendicularity of the test cylinder
ends are in accordance with ASTM and EN standards. The
Planeness accuracy of grinded surface is 0.05 mm. The
deviation of O perpendicularity of the side with reference to
the end faces is 5 . The cradle which specimens are fixed on
has automatic bidirectional radial displacement ability. The
safe and ergonomic design prevents the user to exposure to
water and dust and provides easy access to the water inlet
and outlet.
Specimen cradles and water restraint panels can easily be
installed without the need for any assembly. Mobility of the
machine is achieved with the help of the integral wheels, and
all components of the system can be safely accessed for easy
maintenance. The machine is manufactured from stainless
steel for resistance to corrosion.

The TR-0580 Digital Point Load Test Apparatus consists of a 60

kN capacity load frame with a hydraulic loading ram driven by
a hand pump. The frame is adjustable for testing of samples
up to 102 mm diameter. A ruler assembled on the frame
allows the direct measurement of the distance between the
conical platens before and after the test. The compression
load is measured by a pressure transducer connected to an
advanced digital display unit assuring the best accuracy and
resistance to the failure shocks. The apparatus is supplied
with an easily transportable wooden case.

SLAKE DURABILITY INDEX

ASTM D 5873; ISRM Suggested Method

DESCRIPTION
TR-0562 Rock Classification Hammer together with TR-0565
NW Rock Cradle is an easy-to-use apparatus for measuring
the rebound index on rock cores and samples. The level
of impact energy is 0.74 Nm. The sample is positioned
horizontally and the rebound index is calculated by the
average value determined after several measurements which
are performed perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the
sample. Rock Classification Hammer is supplied complete
with carrying case.

This test method has been developed to assess the

deterioration of rocks over a period of time when subjected to
water immersion. Slake durability is a simulated weathering
test to determine abrasion resistance during wetting and
drying cycles of shale and similar soft rocks as used in
embankments and other construction-related applications.
Samples are alternately tumbled in mesh drums through a
water medium and oven-dried for two cycles. The percent loss
of mass is referred to as the slake durability index.
The TR-0800 Slake Durability Apparatus consists of a
motorised drive unit which is mounted on a baseplate and
which can rotate two or four drums at a speed of 20 rpm. The
tank assemblies are filled with water to a level 20 mm below
the drum axis. The test drums are manufactured from 2.00
mm mesh, 140 mm dia. x 100 mm long.

TR-0565 Rock Cradle apparatus consists of a universal sample

holder unit suitable for all standard rock core specimen sizes
from EX to NX (21.46 mm to 54.74 mm dia.) and a V shaped
vertical magnetic block which holds the hammer.

TR-0563 The type L Original Schmidt is the ideal option for

testing thin walled items with a thickness between 50 to 100
mm (2 and 4) or for analysing small components. It is also
suitable for examining cast stone components which are
sensitive to impact. In rock mechanics, the type L Original
Schmidt is commonly used for the classification of rock cores
and brittle rock.
TR-0563 Type L Hammer is a portable and relatively
inexpensive nstrument for measuring the surface hardness
of rock. The hammer can be used efficiently in both laboratory
and the field setting.
The mechanism of operation is simple: a hammer released by
a spring, indirectly impacts against the rock surface through
a plunger and the rebound distance of the hammer is then
read directly from the scale ranging from 10 to 70 MPa (1,450
to 10,152 psi).
The type L hammer is used on NX or larger core specimens or
block specimens having an edge length of at least 6 cm.
TC-3040 Calibration Anvil, manufactured from a special steel
alloy, is used for the calibration of test hammers.

DESCRIPTION

TR-0564

TR-0564 Rock Schmidt Test Hammer (Proceq) is the worlds

most advanced rebound hammer fully adapted specifically to
the extremely varied rock testing applications (testing on cores
and blocks). The RockSchmidt incorporates statistical methods
based on ASTM and ISRM recommendations and provides the
user with the freedom to define his own statistical process for
determining a rebound number.

DESCRIPTION
Impact Angle Independence: The rebound value is
independent of the impact direction
Optimised for Field Work: Tighter sealing against dirt and
dust intrusion for longer life. Significantly lighter and more
ergonomic than the classic Schmidt hammer. A large
number of readings can be saved and downloaded later to
a PC
Preset Statistics: Statistics methods recommended by
ISRM and ASTM are implemented into the hammer for
automatic calculation of the rebound number. The option
is also there to define a user specific statistics method
Unconfined Compressive Strength: ISRM recommends a
correlation between UCS and the rebound value based
on the formula UCS = aebR (where R is the rebound value).
A correlation in this format may be defined in the PC
software and downloaded onto the RockSchmidt

E-Modulus: ISRM recommends a correlation between

elastic modulus and the rebound value based on the
formula Et = cedR (where R is the rebound value). A
correlation in this format may be defined in the PC software
and downloaded onto the RockSchmidt
