Now lets look at EMCs premier Replication Technology RecoverPoint/SE for VNX.

EMC RecoverPoint is an appliance based (either Physical 1U or Virtual vRPA) continuous data protection solution for
VNX and other EMC Storage Technologies. It provides local or remote Asynchronous IP based replication over the
Internet Protocol (IP WAN) or Synchronous replication over Fibre Channel (FC) networks. The Virtual Appliances are
for VMware iSCSI environments only at time of writing who dont wish to invest in or have the budget for FC
technology. VRPAs support Synchronous and Asynchronous replication. Two or more Appliances are required at each
site depending on workload etc

You can use RecoverPoint to create continuous point-in-time local and/or remote replicas/copies using one or more
storage arrays. These copies or even the source Block LUN can be rolled back to any point-in-time for recovery from
events such as database corruption or human error. This is achievable because every write is maintained in a
reserved storage area known as the RP Journal. This acts like a Read/Writeable DVD and allows updates to be rolled
backwards and forwards on either the source or copy block LUN. The size of the journal area dictates how far back
the data can be rolled back but Proact and EMC have tools available to correctly size the Journal Space based on
factors such as change rate and Recover Point Objectives (RPOs). The journal area is made up of VNX traditional
RAID group LUNs which are assigned to each source LUN or group of LUNs (Consistency group) being replicated. In
RP remote replication environments a journal is required on both arrays.

RecoverPoint/SE is targeted for EMC VNX environments and is installable using the RecoverPoint Deployment
Manager Tool. As with MirrorView/S RecoverPoint can be used to protect VNX for File Block LUNs but all LUNs need
to be protected and failover/restored together.

At time of writing RecoverPoint is managed using Unisphere for RecoverPoint which is an interface similar to VNX
Unisphere Manager and has the same look and feel. From here you can configure RP Replication sets, Consistency
groups and assign Journal LUNs, configure alerts and monitor active replications.

In a VNX and VPLEX Environment then RecoverPoint/EX is required and best practice dictates that VPLEX Volumes
are the source for replication rather than the underlying backend VNX LUNs.

Application Consistency for Exchange/SQL/VMware etc can also be added by using EMC AppSync Manager
and/or Replication Manager which can take Application Consistent Bookmarks/Snaps at regular intervals. Normal
RecoverPoint bookmarks are crash consistent although in most cases can be used to recover your data but in the
odd exceptions you may need to use Application Consistent Bookmarks (Snaps) to recover. This is because most
database type applications have the ability to re-start by playing their own recovery logs.

Proact recommend that you request Professional Services from your EMC Partner or EMC directly to help install this
product to ensure you get the maximum benefit and follow recommended best practices.

RecoverPoint Theory of Operation is that when an application server issues a write to a LUN that is protected by
RecoverPoint, this write is duplicated by an array splitter running in the VNX storage processor. The VNX array will
intercept all writes to LUNs being protected by RecoverPoint, and will send a copies to the RecoverPoint appliance.
In all cases, the original write still travels through its normal path to the production LUN.

Once the appliance receives the write, redundant blocks are eliminated and the writes are sequenced and stored with
their corresponding time stamp information locally in the journal. The package is then compressed, and sent across
the IP or FC network to the remote appliance. At remote site the data is uncompressed and written to the remote

journal volume. Once the data has been written to the journal volume, it is distributed to the remote volumes,
ensuring that write-order sequence is preserved.

Benefits of RecoverPoint/SE

1. Any point in time recovery either to source or clone LUN using a unique DVD-like rollback mechanism.

2. Synchronous and Asynchronous continuous Local and bi-directional Remote replication.

3. Up to 90% WAN Bandwidth reduction with write folding, de-duplication and compression before data transfer.

4. Multi-site replication. Replicates to more than one array at same time. 4:1 Fan-out and 1:4 Fan-in.

5. Minimize performance impact on hosts and storage arrays by offloading replication tasks to the Physical or Virtual
RecoverPoint Appliances.

6. Application Consistency using Consistency Groups and Integration with optional Replication Manager/AppSync
Manager technology.

7. Integration with VMware SRM technology for enhanced Recovery and test/development.

8. Simple to use Unisphere Management.

9. Licensed as part of the VNX Local and Remote Replication Suites, Total Protection Pack or Total Efficiency Pack.
(Note: Physical Appliance not included).

10. Lowers TCO with virtual Appliance configurations.
