Rebel Army

Lewes 1264 AD

A Warhammer Ancient Battles Army List based upon an adaptation of O Peronny’s unofficial
supplement ‘Armies of the Western Kingdoms 1100-1300’.

Based on the army assembled above the Lewes Downs in 1264 under the command of Simon
de Montfort, the following is a set list taking into account the number, speculative composition
and division of the army which fought the Royal army under King Henry III for the rule of
England. Mainly comprising spear armed foot with limited archery, there is argument for
thrusting spear armed Londoners and two famous Bishops to put backbone into an
outnumbered army with little knightly support. Total numbers: 40 cavalry and 294 infantry not
including characters. All unit commanders except skirmishers have character leaders.

The army is divided into four wards of equal strength: two wards being massed Mixed Order
infantry and two divided into two smaller tactical units with archer skirmishers to harass the
enemy. Archers, whilst known to be present during the campaign warrant little reference for the
battle itself so numbers are limited. Each ward has a small heavy horse contingent to
accompany the ward commander and protect the foot from enemy cavalry attack. Whilst small
in number the Knights/Sergeants are all heavily armoured and the knights with Simon de
Montfort’s count as Body Guard. Only Characters and Body Guard have Warhorses.

Notes: Lists refer to my research into the knights and men of note present at the battle which in some instances
have been arbitrarily allocated a ward to spread the identifiable heraldry amongst the army. Small font references
in parenthesis are alternatively spelt or referred names. Unit commanders are in almost every instance known to
have been with or even commanded that ward.
