INTRODUCTION
This offer is for the supply a set of factory-built units of the SM6 type. These panels, fully manufactured by Schneider
Electric Egypt (s.a.e.), are equipped with fixed or withdrawable switchgear units using SF6 breaking technology and
benefit from the large experience of Schneider Electric in this modern technique.
SM6 units are used for the MV section in MV/LV transformer substations in public distribution systems and MV
consumer or distribution substations up to 24kV. SM6 units are indoor type; they are suitable for extensible ring main
units, but not only.
In addition to its technical characteristics, SM6 meets requirements concerning protection of life and property as well
as ease of installation and operation.
All control functions are centralised on a front plate, thus simplifying operation. The units may be equipped with a
number of accessories (relays, toroids, instrument transformers).
Below is the list of SM6 range units used in MV/LV transformer substations and industrial distribution substations.
IM: switch incoming or outgoing
QM: fuse-switch combination
DM1-A: single-isolation circuit-breaker
DM1-W , DM1-Z: withdrawable single-isolation circuit-breaker
2.

SM6 switchboards are for indoor installation, designed for normal operating conditions as defined in paragraph 2.1.1
of the IEC 694, notably:
for average daily ambient temperatures of between -5C and +40 C,
an altitude of less than 1000m.
4.
4.1
SM6 panels are of the indoor design housed in metal enclosures of the metal
type as defined in the IEC 62271-200.
Panels are made up of five compartments separated by metal or insulating
enclosed
partitions:
switchgear compartment,
busbar compartment,
connection and switchgear compartment (circuit-breaker),
operating-mechanism compartment,
low-voltage compartment.
The SM6 panel descriptions are presented in the appendices which follow and are in accordance with our technical
leaflet reference AC0356 - SM6 range.
4.2.
The metal feet and sheeting which form the units are protected against corrosion.
All visible external surfaces are made of electro-plated sheet steel (zinc thickness : 3 m).
Painted surfaces are cleaned prior to painting using a phosphate-cleaning treatment. The paint itself is polymerised
epoxy polyester powder (the average thickness of the polymerised film is 50 m)
Our SM6 range of equipment is provided in RAL 9002 (white) standard colour.
4.3.
Operating safety
Total operating safety is guaranteed in the SM6 range by the division of cubicles into five distinct compartments and
the simplicity of switching operations enhanced by functional interlock systems.
Simplicity of operations:
the entire operating mechanism is centralised in the operating-mechanism compartment,
operating and protection systems are mounted in the operating-mechanism compartment of the circuitbreaker,
levers require little force to operate,
opening and closing operations using levers, push-buttons and trip units (accessories),
position of disconnector or switch indicated by animated mimic panel,
voltage presence monitored by neon lights connected to the capacitive dividers on the cable heads.
The position indicator placed directly on the shaft of the moving assembly dependably signals the position of the
contacts due to a direct and reliable mechanical transmission system. The position of the inspection windows in
cubicle panels may vary depending on future modifications in specifications and standards.
4.4.
Switchgear compartment
This compartment is separated from the busbar compartment and the connection compartment by the enclosure
surrounding the switch, the disconnector and the earthing switch.
4.5.
Busbar compartment
The three insulated busbars are parallel-mounted. Connection is made to the upper pads of the enclosure using a
field distributor with integrated captive screws.
4.6.
The network cables are connected to the terminals of the switch and the earthing switch.
Transformer cables are connected to the lower fuse holder or to the downstream
connection pads of the circuit-breaker. With basic equipment, the maximum
allowable cross-section for cables is:
240 mm2 for 400-630A incoming or outgoing units,
95 mm2 for transformer protection cubicles incorporating fuses. The
earthing switch must be closed before the cubicle may be accessed.
4.7.
Operating-mechanism compartment
This compartment contains the various operating functions for the switch and earthing switch, disconnectors, circuitbreaker and the voltage indicators. The operating-mechanism compartment for the switch, earthing switch and
disconnector may be accessed with the cables and busbars energised and without isolating the substation.
4.8.
Low-voltage compartment
If the switch operating mechanism is motorised, this compartment is equipped with a terminal block and LV fuses. It
may be enlarged by adding an enclosure with a door on the top of the cubicle. It is the case when the circuit-breaker
is controlled by a Sepam unit.
These compartments may be accessed with the cables and busbars energised and without isolating the substation.
4.9.
Low voltage wiring is self extinguishable, insulated with black PVC, 1000 V grade, with the following cross-sections :
2,5 sqmm for currents circuits,
1,5 sqmm for voltage circuits.
Each extremity of wire is marked with a ferrule.
5.
SEPAM RANGE
5.1.
Major advantages
The use of digital techniques provides protection and control devices with major advantages:
Reduction of overall cost:
integration of all the functions required for protection and control of a panel,
cost-savings through the choice of ready-to-use units for each application.
Simplicity and flexibility:
simple parameter setting and testing
suitability for all types of switchgear control logic.
Availability and dependability:
self-testing and self-diagnosis procedures that keep the operator continuously aware of the operating
state of the units,
fast, efficient intervention in the event of a failure
The design of all the types of Sepam for each application is based on three main hardware units: Sepam 100 series,
Sepam series 20, 40 and 80.
5.2.
A complete range
The Sepam range is a set of protection and control units which have the capacity to fulfil all types of applications:
substations
busbars
transformers
motors
capacitors
generators
Each Sepam is an optimized solution in terms of functions, performance and price. Each Sepam includes all the
protection, metering, control, monitoring and annunciation functions required for its assigned application.
Sepam can meet the protection and control needs of low voltage networks up to 220kV as efficiently as required.
