backinthe11thcentury.ThekingofLadakh,SenggeNamgyalreconstructedthismonasteryin1672.
HemismonasteryisthelargestandisalsoconsideredtobethewealthiestmonasteryintheLadakhregion.Itsharesitsrootwithoneoftheancientpupilsof
Buddhism,NaropawhoisbelievedtoachieveenlightenmentinHemis.
ThebesttimetovisitthismonasteryisJuneJuly.Duringthisperiod,thevisitorscanalsowitnessthefamousHemisFestivalthatisorganisedasadedicationto

TheThikseyMonasteryislocated20kmawayfromLehataheightof11,800ft.ThearchitecturallayoutofthisBuddhistmonasteryistrulypraiseworthyand
makesthismonasteryoneofthemagnificentmonasteriesinIndia.
Theimportanceofeverybuildinginthemonasterycanbegaugedbytheirlocationtheascendingbuildingsareofmoreimportancethanthedescendingones.The
12storeycomplexoftheThikseyMonasterycoversanentiresideofahillandthewhitecolourofthemonasterymakesitlooklikeasmallwhitewashedtown
consistingofmanynumbersofsmallbuildings.
ThismonasterywasconstructedundertheguidanceofPladenSangpointhemid15thcentury.Therearesomemysterioustalesthatdepicttheestablishmentofthe
monasteryinthisregion.However,accordingtothemostbelievedtale,whileperformingsomesacredrituals,twocrowsappearedmysteriouslyandcarriedthe
mainceremonialplateswiththem.
Onsearchingfortheceremonialplates,thediscipleofPladenSangpofoundtheminThikseytheplateswerekeptonastoneandwerearrangedinaperfectorder.
TheBuddhistmonk,PaladintookthisasaholyindicationanddecidedtobuildthemonasteryintheThikseyregion.
Theentiremonasteryisverywellconstructedandtheartofmodernconstructionisclearlyvisiblefromit.Dividedintovariousparts,themonasteryhasalively
collectionofmanyBuddhiststatues,scripts,stupasandpaintingsoftheBuddhistculture.AmongstallthecollectionsintheThikseyMonastery,the49ftstatueof
MaitreyaBuddhaisthecentreofattraction.ThisstatueisthelargeststatueintheentireLadakhvalleyandcoverstwoentirestoreysofthemonastery.

MajornumberofdisciplesinthismonasterybelongstothePalyultraditionofthelamas.However,studentsfromtraditionslikeSakyong(MiphamRinpoche),
MinlingDungse,andMinlingKhenchenRinpochealsostudiedinthismonastery.Apartfromthereligiousandspiritualteachings,thismonasteryalsooffersthe
studentstolearncourseslikephilosophy,logicanddebateintheNgagyurNyingmaUniversitywhichisbuiltwithinthemonastery.
AftercomingtoIndia,HisHolinessPemaNorbuRinpocheestablishedthismonasterywithaverylittleamountinhishand.Later,HisHolinessDalaiLamablessed
thismonasteryandtoday,thismonasteryishometomorethan5000lamasfromacrosstheworld.HisHolinessPemaNorbuRinpochetakescareofthemonastery,
allbyhimself.EventheexpensesfortheentiremonasteryarealsomanagedbyHisHoliness.
OntheeveofeveryTibetanNewYear,themonasterydrawsthousandsofvisitorsandlamasfromdifferentpartsoftheworld.TheNewYearcelebrationrunsfor
aroundacoupleofweeks.Duringthisperiod,formalprocessions,lamadanceandseveraltraditionaleventsarehosted.FebruaryMarchistheidealtimetofeelthe
blissfulbeautyoftheNamdrolingMonastery.

SituatedintheenchantingSpitiValley,theTaboMonasteryliestotheleftbankoftheSpitiRiverandabovetheTabovillage.TheTaboMonasteryisoneofthe
oldestmonasteriesinIndiaRinchenSangpolaidthefoundationofthismonasteryinIndiain996AD.
Mostofthepartsofthemonasteryarefilledwithpaintingsincludingwallsandceilings.Anumberofcavesencirclethemonasteryandthusitisalsoknownasthe
AjantaoftheHimalayas.Thesecavesareusedbythelamasformeditationastheyprovideextremesolitude.

Themonasteryhasatotalof9templesandoneofthese9templesholdstheholyWheelofLaw.Thesetemplesarenameddifferentlyandaccordingtotheir
usage.Intheyear2000,HisHolinessDalaiLamainauguratedtheKalachakrainthepresenceofseveralthousandmonksfromeverycorneroftheworld.The
hummingofdailyprayerscanbehearddailyatsharp6am.
TheTaboMonasteryisalsoconsideredasanidealcentreforlearningBuddhism.Apartfromthereligiousteachings,theSekrongSchoolwithinthismonastery
offerssubjectslikeSanskrit,Arts,SocialScience,Maths,SocialStudies,Hindi,English,InformationTechnologyandGeneralKnowledge.
UnlikemostofthemonasteriesinIndia,theTaboMonasteryisnotlocatedinthehillyregions,butinthebottomoftheSpitiValleyataheightof3,050mabovethe
sealevel.Alargenumberoftouristsvisitthisholyplaceeveryyear.
