Preface
Tango, declared cultural heritage of Buenos Aires in 1998 and intangible
cultural heritage of humanity by the UNESCO in 2009, is probably the
only cultural manifestation throughout history that embodies music,
dance, and poetry. Tango music is both an object of study for scholars in
several disciplines and an object of devotion for musicians, dancers,
teachers, disc-jockeys, and collectors all around the world. This
encyclopedia gives a detailed account of tango recordings before, during,
and after the golden age of tango, along with tango orchestras, musicians,
and singers.
Written for anyone who is interested in tango music, from scholars over
practitioners to professionals, it will hopefully become the ultimate source
where to look for details about the orchestras, musicians, and singers that
have recorded tango music since the mid nineteen-twenties, when acoustic
recordings were abandoned in favor of electric recordings with the
invention of the condenser microphone.
Recordings are sorted in chronological order of recording date and matrix
number, which does not always reflect the order in which the tracks were
transferred to disc. They are arranged by orchestra director along with
the orchestras line-up, in an eort to identify as faithfully as possible the
actual musicians that took part in the recording of each individual track.
Singers are listed along with their vocal range: soprano, mezzo-soprano,
and contralto for female voices, and tenor, baritone, and bass for male
voices.
Named orchestras are listed under the orchestras director, including the
following ones:
Caldara - Ruiz - Lesica Jorge Caldara

Information on each recording is arranged in four columns, giving the

tracks name, the name of the singer or singers, the musical genre, and the
recording date in Gregorian, day-month-year format, as in the following
example of the first electric recording on Odeon, by the orchestra of
Roberto Firpo, and the first electric recording on Vctor, by the singer
Rosita Quiroga accompanied by guitars:
Anoche a las dos
La musa mistonga

In an eort to keep it as simple as possible, no finer distinctions are made

within the genres of tango, vals, and milonga, and everything else is listed
as just song, with only a few exceptions.
Apart from the bibliography listed at the end, this encyclopedia is based
on unpublished discographies by Jorge E. Angella (El tango y sus discos
en la Rep
ublica Argentina, 19261959 ), discographies by Nicolas
Lefcovich published (in very limited editions) in Buenos Aires between
1982 and 2001, discographies by Carlos Puente published (also in very
limited editions) by the Buenos Aires Tango Club, the Los Grandes del
Tango collection published in Buenos Aires between 1990 and 1992, the
