LSA 4: Reflection and Evaluation

Planning and Learner Progress
My plan was very detailed and carefully thought through. It was effectively put into practice, and
the sequence of stages was natural and worked well. I think the lesson was useful for the
students as they understood the meaning of the target language, the contexts in which it is used
and had an opportunity to use it in the stories they created. The lesson aim was therefore
achieved.

Strengths
1. The context was relevant, well- established and provided opportunities for the students to
personalise the target language;
2. Students were interested in the lesson and were on task throughout;
3. The rapport was good and the variety of interaction patterns ensured learner-centeredness
and high level of engagement;
4. The chosen activities catered for students needs and learning styles (visual, kinaesthetic);
6. I took students comments and questions into consideration and tried to address them by
means of either clarification or a comment/ example;
7. I tried to control my TTT and not to intrude but monitor and offer help only when needed;

Weaknesses
1. Some of my instructions were not very clear and straightforward. Although I had them written
in the plan I failed to explain what the learners needed to do in the controlled practice activity.
The fact that some students did not realise that they needed to stick their sentences below the
phrasal verbs on the wall, made me realise that I had not demonstrated. This affected the entire
task, as there was not enough time for feedback and it was confusing and hastened. I feel that I
got very nervous and for a moment I lost control over my thoughts and my words. That
happened because I suddenly realised that I needed to finish at 11.55 rather than 12.00
oclock;
2. The language clarification stage was unnecessarily long and the part with the two and three
words PV was redundant. I could have safely moved to the seperable /inseparable MWV
directly which would have meant better pace and more time;
3. Feedback after the controlled practice could have been better organise;
4. The homework task could have been better explained and more detailed and I should have
checked that students understood what they needed to do;

Consolidation and Follow-up

1.Check on the homework and share edited and revised stories;

2. This was the first of the series of lessons which are focused around MWV and these are
presented and practised as a main aim. We have done some work on PV but it had been at the
end of the lesson after a reading text in a coursebook. I will carry on using authentic materials,
giving the students more challenging texts and listening materials where they can notice the use
of MWV. We will work with online corpuses and I will help students notice the co-text , the
collocations and the typical situations in which MWV appear.
