Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.

It was 4 a.m. and still dark outside. Doan Thi Khoa opened her eyes and
for a moment was not sure where she was. Her whole body ached,
especially the stump on the left, where her leg used to be. She suddenly
realised the importance of that day ; seeing Mr Hung, the trainer, for the first
time in her life, and starting her training for the competition for the disabled

from all over the country.

2

Khoa sat up, trying to keep her balance on both her leg stumps. It was
difficult because the right one was a little longer than the left one. Deftly,
she swung herself onto the wheelchair and quickly moved to the other end
of the room she used as a kitchen. Through one of the many small holes in

10

the thatched roof, she could see a twinkling star. It was like the brought smile
of a friend in her lonely life. It was her habit to smile back at the star every
morning, at about the same hour.
3

She had orphaned at the age seven, when a traffic accident on the
way to her father's hometown killed both her parents, and deprived her of
her legs. The following days, weeks, months and years were one long
nightmare for her. She lived among the poor neighbours who were farmers

15

like her parents. Her neighbours shared whatever they could spare with the
little orphan. Needless to say, humiliation, sorrow and self-pity were her
constant companions in learning to look after herself. She learnt to do all

20

kinds of odd jobs for living. She learnt to read and write with the help of a
high-school student. Yet, in spite of all the hardships, she grew up strong
and beautiful, like a wild flower.
4

Ten years later, a cousin took her to Hanoi to live with his family. They
needed someone to take care of their small son while they were at work.

25

The small boy was happy to have a bigger sister to play although that
sister could never catch him in their races. Khoa was well aware of her
disability, and her desire to walk like a normal person became stronger than
ever. When the boy started school, she moved out to live on her own. Her
cousin helped her to find a room she could rent in poor part of the city,

30

where accommodation was cheap. Khoa began to sell bread for a living.
She had to face the difficulties of living in poverty all over again - this time
in a big city.
5

She left her house and went around the streets, calling out her wares.
People liked to buy bread for their breakfast from this smiling, cheerful girl,
who always thanked them sincerely. Luck was with her and Khoa sold all
her bread by eight o'clock. She rushed back home, left her baskets, and hid

35

Page | 2

the money in a small box behind the cracked stove. If she steered her
wheelchair fast enough, she would just be in time for meeting.
6

Three days earlier, on a cool evening, Khoa had gone to a park to talk to

40

some of her friends who also had to sit in a wheelchair like her. Just for fun,
they started a wheelchair race, without noticing that a man was watching
them carefully from distance. He was a well-known sports trainer, and
when the race was over, he approached Khoa to ask if she would like to join
a group of disabled people who were training for a competition. It was so

45

sudden that she did not know what to say at first, but her friends had all
persuaded her to agree. So, today she would meet the trainer at the stadium
for the first time, and he had promised to help her as much as he could.

For the next six months, every day, in sunshine or in rain, after selling her
wares, Khoa was never absent from the small stadium where the group
trained. Her hands bled at first and then hard calluses of skin appeared. All
her muscles ached, and at night she tossed and turned on her hard bed,
unable to get to sleep. All she thought about was to bend forward on her
wheelchair, to speed ahead, and never stop until she reached the finishing
line the trainer drew on the ground.

( 25 marks )

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.

Ten years ago, I led a fast-paced life. I was an account manager for a top
trading company, putting in at least 12 hours a day at the office. For three
consecutive years, my team had raked in the highest profit and I had received
numerous awards. Life was exciting and I was fortunate to have hired help at home.
Little did I know that I would lose it all in the next few months.

It happened after a business trip to China. I developed a persistent back

pain and a low grade fever at night. I thought I was overworked and decided to
take some painkillers. When I told my husband about it, he said I probably needed
a holiday. He promptly booked a holiday for us both to Bali the next day. In Bali,
things got worse, especially at night. I had night sweats and I began coughing.

10

I was so exhausted that I cut short the holiday and flew home.

The next day, I could hardly get out of bed. My family doctor advised me
to take an x-ray. To my utter dismay, the X-rays revealed that I had tuberculosis!
He put me on a regimen of 20 tablets a day, containing the usual drugs to fight TB.
I soon felt better and everything was back to normal. However, when I returned
from my trip to Singapore, I had developed a persistent cough again.

This time, I decided to make an appointment with my friend, Dr Azlin,

15

a consultant chest physician. Another X-ray revealed a fist-size cavity in my lower

left lung, caused by multidrug resistant strain. Mr TB was definitely still around.
By this time, my weight had dropped to 40 kilos. I could hardly eat anything as the 20
Page | 7

powerful drugs made me sick. I was warned that the treatment would cause
nausea, heart palpitations and joint pains. It might also lead to liver problems and
blindness. I did not hesitate, as I did not have any choice. I could hardly breathe
and a simple conversation was almost impossible.

In the meantime, I had a heart-to-heart talk with my boss, Encik Razman,

25

and we decided that I should hand over my team to my assistant while I

recuperate. He was very understanding and kind which made it even more
difficult for me. I was used to fighting my way up and we always had heated
arguments about our projects. Seeing his sympathy and kindness made me
reflect upon the seriousness of my condition. I told him that I wanted to take

30

no-pay leave and he assured me that the job would always be there waiting for
me. I was the first time he saw me cry.

I began to think about my job and my accomplishments. I spent a total

of four months in bed. During that time, my family and friends could not
visit me for fear of infection. I contemplated my future, if I had one. I wanted

35

to die at one points as I had never felt so hopeless. I was slowly losing the
battle. Then, my husband bought a journal for me and I began writing again.
It was something that I had always wanted to do but did not have time. I
guessed he must have seen the emptiness in my eyes and he desperately
wanted to help. One night, when I wanted to go to the toilet, I heard him
crying in the study room. It was then that I resolved to get well. I realised
that I had put him through so much and he had never once complained to
me about the household. When I was better, my children visited me. I

40

missed them more than I realised. A week later, I began painting again, a
hobby which I had pursued as a child. I painted and wrote as if I had only

45

weeks to live. My drive and will began to return. I felt better but dared not
Page | 8

believe the first negative test results that come back. I had been there before.
Finally, after 36 harrowing months, I was declared free of Tb. However, the
disease had taken its toll on me. It had destroyed 25 percent of my left lung.
Each day, for the next six months, I still had to continue taking the medicine

50

to avoid any relapse.

Finally, a year later, I was pronounced cured. I was finally able to go back
to work. A sea of new faces greeted me on that day. I felt insecure but happy
to be back. Then, Encik Razman and my team were waiting in my room for me.
I was over enjoyed that they had maintained the room for me. I cried tears

55

of joy as I hugged my team members.

Although I feel weak and I am constantly on antibiotics, I am enjoying life

again. I am thankful for the break that the disease gave me as it had taught
me life's lessons. I learnt to appreciate my family and life. I learnt that it is
all right to lean back and let others get ahead of me. I learnt that material

60

wealth is nothing compared to health love and life.

PRACTICE 3
Section C
[25 marks]
Questions 26 31 are based on the following passage.

The golden rules of healthy ageing are very simple: eat right, exercise, be
your age and do not smoke. Most of all, focus on being happy and dont forget
your life goals. Professor Makoto Suzuki, 87, says that one celebrate long life.
The onus is on us to focus on quality, and work on having many momentous
occasions. Suzuki, chief director of the Okinawa Research Center for Longevity

Science, was speaking to a captive audience at the 1st World Congress of

Healthy Aging, in Kuala Lumpur last Wednesday. The title of his talk was, Secrets
Of The Okinawan Centenarians Longevity.
2
He advises the audience to keep active, eat moderately and embrace the

10

years. He says a diet laden with vegetables, but less meat, plays a big part in
healthy ageing. The Okinawans have a custom of saying harahachibu before
each meal. This is a reminder not to overeat. Preferably, one should stop when
the stomach is about 70% full. He also points out that the Okinawan diet is rich in
anti-ageing ingredients such as polyphenol, phytoestrogen, isoflavones, good 15
amyloids as well as vitamins and nutrients which are good for our health. These
are commonly found in bitter gourd, soybean products like tofu, brown rice and
3

cereals.

Exercise also comes into the equation and Suzuki advises the young to
start as early as possible as the effective benefits of that lessens after the age of

20

40. As an archer and mountain climber himself, he emphasises that the elderly
Page | 12

must find a way to sweat it out. If we want to stay healthy, we cannot afford to stay
idle. Instead, we should find a hobby that we can focus and required us to move
about. Since his move to the flat plains of Okinawa, he has exchanged his
climbing gear for a hoe because his wife, Yoko, has a farm where they spend

25

most of their weekends. Dont worry about the wrinkles or being slow. Just be
4

busy, says Suzuki, who still lectures and conducts research at Ryukyus.
Death is also inevitable, but for the elderly in that island, whats far more
important than the end of ones days is the role of the community in ensuring that
they have a place in society. Elderly people need to have a sense of belonging,

30

to know their role in a family is still valued. One of the reasons why the
centenarians of Okinawa are able to lead a happy life is because they are revered
5

by the younger people, he says.

Praying is another common practice that can improve your physical and

35

emotional health as it may lower blood pressure and heart rates. People may use
the time before going to sleep to say their prayers by voicing out their hopes and
wishes, which will help them to keep calm. Furthermore, Suzuki elaborates on a
daily ritual called ugan, during which the Okinawans pay respect to their ancestors
6

at the family altar, and air their grievances to the dead. This has a therapeutic

40

effect for the living, as it helps to alleviate stress.

On the home front, a specialist in healthy ageing at Pantai Medical Centre,
KL, says often, senior citizens are not encouraged to keep pushing themselves,
both physically and mentally. The Malaysian mindset is that old people should not
exert themselves. As a result, their physical and mental faculties are left to

45

decline, says Dr Rajbans Singh, 52. To have wellness and health in old age, it is
crucial for an individual to take a proactive stand, like taking up tai chi, for
example.

It may also be necessary to abstain from fast food and fizzy drinks, Dr

50 Page | 13

Rajbans adds, because the high fat, sugar and sodium contents of these foods
can lead to or aggravate conditions like hypertension and diabetes.

For Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Mustaffa Babjee, a fellow of Academy of Science

Malaysia, acceptance of ones age is crucial so that growing old can be seen as a

55

positive, natural process. Do not, for example, tell others that you are 47 when
you are in fact 74! Instead, learn to enjoy being your age.
It is important to be what you are and follow the ways of nature, says Dr
Ahmad, 75, who still cuts a dashing figure with his long snowy locks and thick
moustache.

PRACTICE 4
Section C
[25 marks]
Questions 26 31 are based on the following passage.

We can all safely say that we have struggled with sleep at one point or
another in our lives. The difficulty is we all seem to have varying and individual
degrees of sleep problems. Some people fall asleep just fine but wake up in the
middle of the night and cant get back to sleep. Others sleep through the night but
wake too early in the morning. And still others appear to sleep through the night

with no problem, but never wake rested.

2

While its normal to experience an occasional bad night of sleep, if your

sleep problems become chronic, its time to do something about them. Lack of
Page | 17

sleep interferes with immune function and increases your risk of insulin
resistance. Then there are the dangers of trying to get through the day when you

10

are overtired because of your sleep-deprived state. This is bad, especially if you
have to drive.
3

Various health issues may contribute to sleep problems, including

menopause, depression, and just about any condition that causes pain. Other
culprits include restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea, in which you slightly

15

awaken dozens of times a night because your breathing stops.

4

Just as important as the ability to fall asleep and stay asleep is the ability
to cycle in an orderly fashion through the five stages of sleep several times a
night. Children, adolescents and teenagers need to get the recommended 8 hours
of sleep as this is critical to their cell growth and repair. If something interrupts the

20

progression of these sleep stages, you wont feel well rested and your mood and
memory may suffer.
5

Not being able to sleep can be extremely frustrating. But before you turn to
sleeping pills, there are plenty of natural approaches to try. Many doctors
recommend maintaining a normal weight. Studies find that obesity can make

25

sleep problems like sleep apnea worse. It can also affect important sleep-related
hormone levels in the body, increasing levels of the stress hormone cortisol while
decreasing levels of sleep-inducing melatonin.
6

If you find yourself in a stressful situation, be careful. Always try to manage

your stress. Concentrate on making your body relax and stress-free just before
going to sleep. You should take yoga classes or doing meditation in your free
time, as they can help you to achieve a restful sleep.

Moreover, if you are under the doctors orders to take medication, check

30

your prescription. Many prescriptions and over-the-counter medications can

interfere with sleep, including beta-blockers, thyroid medication, certain

35

antidepressants like the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs),

Page | 18

decongestants, corticosteroids, and medications with caffeine. Talk to your doctor

about changing dosages or medication if youre taking any of these drugs.
8

You must remember to avoid alcohol, especially before bedtime. Although

many people think a glass of wine before bed can help with insomnia, the

40

opposite is actually true. As alcohol is actually a type of depressant, it might help

you fall asleep. However, its often the culprit behind middle-of-the-night
awakenings as your body experiences alcohol withdrawal. As soon as it wears off,
you will abruptly awaken and it will be harder than ever to fall asleep. It also
interferes with your sleep cycle, so even if you do sleep through the night, youll

45

wake up tired.
9

Yet another reason to quit smoking: Nicotine is a stimulant. People who

smoke will have a harder time trying to get to sleep. If youre still smoking, try not
to smoke for at least two hours before bedtime. One way to abstain from smoking
is to brush your teeth so you wont be tempted to smoke for the remainder of the

50

night.
10

Getting rid of chronic insomnia will involve making some long-term

changes to your habits. You must be prepared to ask yourself, are you ready to
make the necessary sacrifices?

PRACTICE 5
Section C
[25 marks]
(Time suggested : 50 minutes)
Questions 26 31 are based on the following passage.
1

Shoplifting is a phenomenon that haunts established supermarkets like a

plague. This could be due to the easy access of shoppers to the commodities plus
the fact that commodities are displayed so attractively which tempt the customers.
However, not every customer is able to purchase the attractive goods. So, not
surprisingly, they resort to shoplifting.

This is bad news for supermarkets. The attractive display of goods to woo
customers is now encouraging the customers to shoplift. Therefore, to combat this

menace, supermarkets need to step up security measures.

3

To begin with, the supermarkets should install cameras at strategic places.

This will help the surveillance of difficult to see places. Also, it will be only fair to

10
Page | 24

put up a notice informing customers that the supermarket is under camera

surveillance. The mere notice will deter customers from shoplifting for fear of
being captured on camera. This will also act as evidence. Also, the seriousness of
the crime, the arrests and court proceedings must be publicised. Hopefully, this
will deter other criminals.
4

15

In addition, the supermarkets should increase the number of security

guards that they employ. These security guards are to patrol each floor and each
department in the supermarket. The mere existence of the security guards will
ward off any intentions of shoplifting. The security guards should be alert and able
to distinguish suspicious characters and follow them. With security guards

20

breathing down their necks, the idea of shoplifting can be erased from their minds.
5

Another effective way of dwindling down the number of shoplifters is by

banning shoppers from bringing in bags especially tote bags. The customers
should only be allowed to bring in their handbags or purses. This will definitely
reduce the number of shoplifting cases as shoplifters have no place to hide their

25

stolen items. In fact, bags, especially tote bags, are not necessary as shoppers
are provided with bags to put in their shopped items.
6

To further tighten security, irremovable plastic bands should be used to

seal the shopping bags to further discourage shoplifting. As the supermarkets
have many departments, they should pay for their goods at each department. This

30

seal is not easily opened by shoppers. To further avoid shoplifting, security guards
should be placed at exit doors to ensure that the seals have not been tampered
with. Any suspicion should be dealt with discreetly. The concerned shoppers can
be escorted to a secluded room where a thorough check can be conducted to
ensure there are no stolen items.

35

Finally, each item must be placed with security tags. The tags are removed
once the customer has paid for the item. However, if the item has been shoplifted,
it will be detected at the exit through a monitoring system placed at the exit. Each
Page | 25

time an unpaid item passes through the system, it will trigger an alarm. The
shopper is then escorted to a room where the contents of the bag and even the

40

shopper himself will be subjected to a thorough check. As a matter of fact, the

mere existence of the monitoring system is a deterrent to shoplifters as they do
not want to be embarrassed as the alarm goes off. This is because the alarm
indicates the possibility of shoplifting.
8

Hopefully, with these measures, the number of shoplifting cases will

45

dwindle. These measures may incur a lot of expenses. Nevertheless, in the long
run, it will prove to be beneficial to the supermarkets.

PRACTICE 6
Section C
(25 marks)
(Time suggested : 50 minutes)
Questions 26 31 are based on the following passage.
1

If you dont give them $75,000, they will kill me. There was a
click, and then the hum of a dead line.

For Benny Baucom, founder and president of Bebco Industries,

an electronics company in La Marque, Texas, that hum signalled the beginning of an
agonising wait. Benny had been called to the phone

Page | 31

in his office on September 22, 1982, a Wednesday. The voice that

came faintly over the wire belonged to his 21-year-old son, Michael,
and Baucom recognised that it was on tape. He could make out only
a phrase or two and then the chilling final sentence : These people

10

mean business.
3

Baucom fought back panic as he realised that his son had

been kidnapped. He walked into the outer office and asked Sherry,
his daughter and secretary, if she knew who had asked for him on
the phone. It had been a man. Baucom then called In several

15

company officials and told them Michael had been abducted. They
should maintain an appearance of business-as-usual, he said, and
they should tell no-one.
4

On the way home to tell his wife, Glendell, Bennys mind kept
racing around in a vortex, at the centre of which was a man, Ronald
Floyd White, a Bebco salesman, who had quit his job that spring.
Personally, he had seemed to Benny to be a sort of con man, a gun
nut who liked to refer to himself as a mercenary.

20

Suddenly it all fell into place. Benny had been wondering

about the $75,000 ransom demand. Why that amount? Why not

25

three times that much? He remembered that a few months earlier

Page | 32

he had sold some property for $80,000. White knew about this sale,
and must have reasoned that his former employer had that much
money readily available. Now Benny had no doubt that Ron White
was the man who had kidnapped his son.
6

30

At 9.30 the previous evening, Mike Baucom was watching

television at his bachelors home in the residential community of
Sante Fe, 11 kilometres from his fathers plant. When he heard three
raps on the door, he went to open it and found himself looking
down the barrel of a .357 Magnum. The man with the pistol had

35

long hair and was about his own age. Behind him was a man with
jet-black hair holding a shot-gun. They forced Mike to the kitchen,
blind-folded and gagged him with duct tape. They walked him out
to his own truck, pushed him into the cab and backed out the
driveway.
7

40

They drove through Houston and then north for half an

hour to a secluded, heavily wooded area in an abandoned oil field.
There the abductors made Mike repeat two separate messages into

a tape recorder. When the taping was done, the two men walked
Mike across a field to a hole in the ground. At the bottom of the

45

hole was a flimsy plywood box, 24 metres long, 60 centimetres

Page | 33

wide and 35 centimetres high. They forced Mike to a lying

position in the box, placed a lid on top, jammed in four lengths of
18-millimetre-thick plastic pipes for breathing and started shovelling
dirt to fill the hole. To cover their handiwork, they scattered some 50
worn-out tyres over the burial site. Then they dove away.
8

After conveying the bad news to his wife, Benny Baucom

called Chief Bryan Lamb of the Santa Fe police. Lamb arrived in
ten minutes and thoroughly questioned Benny, who mentioned
his suspicions about White. Lamb told him to return to the

55

factory and wait. Back at the police station, Lamb notified the FBI.

SECTION C

Page | 38

Keeping Yourself Save At Home

1

Home Alone and its sequel Home Alone 2 were box office movies that were well-

received by viewers all over the world. The innovative and creative strategies displayed by

Page | 39

the protagonist won many-a-hearts.

2

However, this is not reality! The innovative and creative strategies of the protagonists are

not displayed by a regular child. Many children fall prey to intruders who break into their

houses. Some are physically and mentally abused while others are abducted, raped and
even murdered.
3

Although parents globally are aware of this menace, yet they are unable to be with their

children all the time. The rising cost of living styles and standards keep parents in the office
most of the time rather than their homes. Hence, the latch-door-kid phenomenon is here 10
to stay.
4

Now, there is good news for parents and children who are left alone at home. Adhere to

these golden rules to ensure your safety at home.

5

Firstly, never enter the house if you suspect something is wrong. Before you leave the

house, ensure that you have closed and bolted the doors and windows. When you

15

reach home, check the doors and windows first before entering the house. Ensure that they
are still locked before you open the door. If you find something amiss, like the door being
slightly ajar or a window is opened, do not enter the house. Instead, call your parents and
inform them. Wait until they arrive to investigate what was amiss.
6

Secondly, make sure that your parents know where you will be after school.

20

Prepare your after-school schedule and inform your parents about the meetings, practices or
tuitions that you have to attend. This will help them contact or locate you if there is an
emergency. Also, they can check on you from time to time to ensure that you are safe.

Thirdly, make sure you have a place to go if you have lost your key. This place that you

go to should be a familiar place where your parents can easily contact or locate

25

you. You can go to a friends or relatives house. If it is a friend, introduce your parents to
your friend and his or her family. Visit your friends home with your family so that they can Page | 40
establish a very good rapport with your friends family. Also, this will provide your parents an
opportunity to gauge the company you keep with.
8

In addition, never inform anyone that you are home alone. This is because your

30

friend may unconsciously inform others or an eavesdropper may digest the information and
pass it around. Eventually, this information may fall on the ears of unscrupulous people
causing more harm than good.
9

Next, if you are alone at home and something is amiss, make sure you have someone to

contact. List down all the numbers of your loved ones especially hand phones and also

35

important numbers such as the hospital, the police station and the fire brigade, in case of
emergencies. Display these essential numbers on the refrigerator so that they are easily
accessible.
10

Finally, do not use knives and other objects which pose a danger to you. If you suspect

that there is a break in and you want to investigate, carry a blunt object rather than a
sharp one.

40

This is because the intruder may over-power you and use your object of

protection against you. The wise thing to do in case of a break-in is to inform the police than
oppose the intruder yourself.
11

Being home alone is not a phenomenon welcomed by both parents and children alike.

Circumstances leave them no choice. By following the golden rules above you can
keep yourself safe.

Passage 8
SECTION C

(25 MARKS)
Question 26-31 are based on the following passage.
Inculcating Good Behaviour
1

Page | 47

Having children with good behaviour and mannerism is every parents dream.
Similarly having good citizens with good behaviour is every countrys aspiration.
Yet, it is not easy to mould a child or a nations behaviour. Many factors come to
play where good behaviour is concerned.

The inculcation of good behaviour begins at home. A child spends most of his

childhood and teenage life at home. Hence, the home and its surroundings are
the focal points for inculcating good behaviour. A child is physically, emotionally
and financially dependent on his/her family. Also, the child looks up to his parents
and siblings as role models. If the family upholds good values, it is only natural
that the child will emulate these good values. Likewise, if the parents and siblings

10

are at loggerheads all the time, the child will grow up to be quarrelsome and find it
difficult to get along with the norms of society.

Hence, the family holds the

responsibility of inculcating positive values uphold by the society in the child.

3

Besides the family, the next most important place to inculcate good behaviour
is the school. As a child grows up, the school and its surroundings form his
second home.

15

Teachers and peers have an enormous effect on the childs

behaviour. If the child or teenager keeps good company, he will develop good
behaviour and mannerism. On the other hand, if the child keeps bad company, it
will not take him long to delve into social ills. Without a doubt, the parents, family
and school have to keep a tab on on the childs or teenagers friends and their
movements. As the child spends much of his formulative years in school, the
teachers and parents have to work hand in hand to achieve the National
Educational Philosophys aspiration of developing a balanced individual. Hence,

20

the school plays an equally important role in inculcating good behaviour.

4

Undoubtledly, religion does play a vital role in inculcating good behaviour. 25

Every religion teaches its followers to inculcate good behaviour and abide by the
Page | 48

norms of the religion. It emphasizes on virtues, noble deeds and tolerance. A

god-fearing person will practice good behaviour as he/she does not want to
commit a sin consciously. Consequently, he or she will inculcate good behaviour,
either intrinsically or extrinsically.

I am sure that we agree that religion is the

30

guide that enlightens our journey in this world. Therefore, religion moulds a child
with virtues and advises them to repel against worldly sins. In contrast, a child
who does not have a good religious upbringing does not fear God. So, he or she
is not afraid of God. They throw caution to the wind as they steal, rob, rape or
even murder a person. Thus, it is vital to inculcate religious values in a child to

35

ensure that he or she grows up with good behaviour.

5

Finally, the socio-economic conditions of a country may have an adverse effect

on its nation, especially the young and impressionable teenagers.

This is

especially so when the flow of negative culture is eminent. Vandalism, loitering,

bullying and pre-marital sex are negative influences that abound in our country. 40
This is further emphasized with the influx of immigrants who flood our country in
search of a better life. As they have endured extreme hardship and sufferings,
they are bold and daring and are unafraid of the consequences. Naturally, with
the rise of the number of legal and illegal immigrants, social problems become
complex and unavoidable.

Robberies, rapes and murders adorn our local

45

newspapers. These crimes are now part and parcel of our daily lives. Ultimately,
these negative behaviours will rub off on the citizens of our country. Hence, the
government has a crucial role in inculcating good behaviour. Positive measures
and policies have to be implemented to curb the flow of social ills into our country.
Otherwise, these social ills will rock the stability of the country to its core.
6

In conclusion, the responsibility of inculcating good behaviour in a child is a

50

joint responsibility of internal and external factors. The internal factors here refer
to the childs immediate surroundings-the parents, siblings and relatives. The
external factors, on the other hand, refer to the school, teachers, peers and their
surroundings as well as the government. All these factors must come to play to
ensure the positive inculcation of good behaviour in a child.

PRACTICE 9
SECTION C

(25 MARKS)
Question 26-31 are based on the following passage.
1

Almost every day we read about accidents that occur at home. A home is

Page | 53

supposedly to be a safe heaven for the family yet this very home has claimed lives
of millions of children globally. These accidents could be avoided if preventive
measures are taken to keep the home accident-free.

The kitchen is a death trap. Sharp and dangerous equipments are found here

including knives and cleavers. These dangerous cutleries should be statched away
in higher shelves where children cannot reach them. Also, when boiling or cooking
on the stove, ensure that the handles of pots and pans are not sticking out. Curious
children may be inclined to pull them down. As a result, the hot content may scald or
burn the children.

10

Next, when storing medicines in the kitchen or in the bathroom, practice caution.
Do not store medicines, chemicals or washing liquids in soft drink bottles. Children
may mistake them for drinks and drink them. Ensure that all medicines and
chemicals are clearly labeled and put them under lock and key or in places where
children cannot reach them.

15

On a similar note, put away all matches and electrical equipments away from
childrens reach. Children are very curious in nature. As such, they like to explore to
satiate their curiosity. Also, use socket shields to make sure that children cannot
insert something into the socket. This is to avoid electrocution.

The bathroom is also highly accident prone. Wet and slippery surface are
invitations to falls. If possible, place non-slip floor mats in bathrooms. Also, never

20

leave tubs or pails of water in the bathroom. Statistics have shown that many
toddlers have drowned in their own bathrooms.

Page | 54

In addition, be careful of staircases. Never leave a child unattended at staircases.

Many children have fallen from staircases and died due to internal bleeding. Invest

25

in a stair fence to ensure that children do not walk on the staircase alone.

Finally, there are incidents where children are killed at the drive-way by their
loved ones. Make sure that children do not play behind the cars especially when
reversing. Make it a point to ensure where the children are before reversing the
cars. In this way, you ensure their safety and your peace of mind.

30

The total number of fatal cases involving children can be reduced if parents and
siblings are more thoughtful. Remember, keep your home an accident-free zone.

SECTION C
(25 MARKS)

Question 26-31 are based on the following passage.

1

English Language is a popular lingua franca in todays world. It has been given
the status of the international language as it is able to cut across geographical
boundaries as well as racial and language barriers. Todays global community has
come to accept the English Language as not only the international language but the
language of business and trade as well as the language of science and technology.

Yet, sadly, the level of English in Malaysia is dropping drastically to a level where
it is now at a critical stage. There are two main contributing factors why the level of
English is on its way down. Firstly, the lack of use of the language and secondly,
limited opportunities for communication.

After recognizing the factors, we should now take the bull by its horns. Malaysian

10

students are shy and are afraid of making mistakes. They are ashamed of being the
brunt of peoples jokes. Hence, they would rather not speak and keep quiet.
However, this is not a positive attitude in improving any language for that matter.
The only way to improve ones command and mastery of the language is by using
the language.
4

15
Hence, the only way to improve the English Language is by enabling the

students to use the language through fun ways shows, having singing competitions
and even the novice language games.
5
Page | 60

Animated shows like Finding Nemo, Madagascar and Lilo and Stitch interest
students. So, they watch the movies willingly. Hence, there is an intrinsic motivation

20

to watch these movies as they are personally interested in them. As we all know, we
can never force a student to learn unless he or she is willing to do so. Since they
are interested, they watch the movies for 1 to 2 hours. Indirectly, they are listening
to 1 hours to 2 hours of English Language.
6
In addition, singing competitions can be organized where students are

25

encouraged to sing in English. Students especially adolescents are more interested

in songs than text books. This is clearly shown via the Disney movie High School
Musical. The movie which has a sing along session has very high ratings from
viewers all over the world. Simply because of the melodious songs and the
interesting plot, the students watch the movies which is spoken entirely in English.

30

Once again, students are intrinsically motivated to sing in English. Hence, we

should capitalize talentime or karaoke competitions where students have to sing in
7

English.

Finally, the novice language games and puzzles can stir interest in English.
Improvised versions of popular game shows can be carried out in schools. Wheel
of Furtune, Bingo and Win, Lose or Draw are popular game shows that
challenge the mind to think. No doubt, these games can be improvised to cater to
the students level of comprehension. I am sure that students will enjoy these
games. Therefore, to put it in a nutshell, learning English should be fun and not
pain-staking.
