SOLAR HOUSE DAY
Thanks again to everyone involved. Aussie knack has taken some great photos which will be added to the
Solar House Day web site in due course.
There will also be a meteorological study next year to check whether it ALWAYS rains on Solar House Day.
Perhaps the same rule applies as it does to Anzac Day??

The Great Ethanol Debate

The John Smith Memorial Forum for 2005
John Smith was a strong contributor to the renewable energy debate through his writings, the curriculum
materials he developed and the example he set through the construction of his own energy efficient home,
Kawanda Muna (Kaurna for “North in front ”). He made a substantial contribution to ANZSES, the Australian
Association for Environmental Education and the Nature Education Centre and these organisations joined
the Investigator Science Centre in presenting a debate that John would have relished.

A capacity crowd filled the lecture theatre of the Investigator Science and Technology Centre on 31st
October to hear six speakers discuss issues related to both ethanol and biodiesel. The speakers were: Bob
Gordon, Exec Director, Renewable Fuels Aust; Frank Topham, Govt Affairs Manager, Caltex Aust; Mark
Borlace, Manager, Technical Services, RAA; Greg Rowberry, Manager, Environment Business, Office of
Sustainability; Ashley Sanders, Manager, Certification and Regulation Compliance, Mitsubishi Motors Aust
Ltd and Andy Fischer, Managing Director and Owner, Australian Farmers Fuel.

It seems that ethanol IS safe in modern, fuel-injected cars up to 10% concentrations and that while it does
reduce performance by a few percentage points there is a commitment by both governments and fuel
companies to meet targets for renewables in fuels within the next decades.

WORLD SOLAR CHALLENGE 25TH SEPT-2ND OCT.

Another successful World Solar Challenge reached Adelaide from Darwin in record time! We probably take
for granted the amount of local publicity generated for Solar through this race.
