A police report says the guard, Francine Bernice
Jones, 45, allegedly called trans woman Ebony
Belcher, 32, a he/she faggot and demanded she
leave the womens bathroom located near the stores
main entrance.
The report says that when Belcher left the bathroom
and started to walk toward the main area of the store
to visit a Western Union outlet located within the Giant
store, Jones blocked her path, pushed her toward the
exit, and gave her a nal push outside the door.
Belcher told the Washington Blade at D.C. Superior
Court on May 17, where she observed Jones
appearance at an arraignment, that Jones grabs me
by my arms, spins me around grabbing me by my
back and pushes me out of the door.

began hurling slurs at her.
I know youre a man and youre not supposed to

She called me all types of derogatory names. She

Belcher said police responded to the scene after she

scene was Sgt. Jessica Hawkins, supervisor of the D.C.

The building at 2009 8th St., N.W., which is home to Town, was sold.

Fanning and the other ve gay candidates were among a total of 60 candidates
committed to Clinton competing for just 13 elected delegate seats at a pre-primary
Democratic Caucus held on May 21 at the Walter Washington Convention Center.
A seventh gay candidate, Democratic activist and City Council staer David Meadows,
withdrew his candidacy, saying he plans to seek one of ve appointed add-on delegate
positions up for grabs in June.
According to preliminary results released by the D.C. Democratic Party, which
organized the caucus, Fanning came in second place behind D.C. Council member Jack
Evans (D-Ward 2) and ahead of local union leader Jos Williams. The three were among
18 male candidates running for three delegate seats in a section of the city deemed
District 1, which includes Wards 1,2,6 and 8.
Gay candidates Peter Rosenstein, Gregg Moreland, Richard Lum and Mark Spengler
ran and lost their races in that district. Gay candidate James Brexley Wyatt lost his
race as a Clinton delegate candidate in District 2, in which a total of nine candidates
competed for three male delegate seats.

Town nightclub building sold

to developer

A developer specializing in building upscale apartment buildings has purchased

the building at 2009 8th St., N.W., which is the current home of the popular gay
nightclub Town Danceboutique, according to the Washington Business Journal.
The publication says deed records show that the Jeerson Apartment Group
paid $25 million for four parcels of land between V Street and Florida Avenue,
N.W., that includes the Town building and an adjacent parking lot.
It says another real estate development rm, Bristol Capital Corp. of Bethesda,
Md., sold the building and surrounding land to the Jeerson Group after it bought
the properties in 2004 for $7 million. The steep appreciation in the value of the
property was said to be a sign of how a once warehouse and industrial section
of the city along Florida Avenue is rapidly being transformed into a sought-after
residential and entertainment enclave.
Town released a statement on Wednesday that says the club will remain open
for years to come. The statement reads:
Since 2007, Town Danceboutique has operated in the Shaw neighborhood
at 2009 8th Street NW. In that time, and after considerable investments in
our neighborhood by many people including ourselves, Shaw is now one of
Washingtons most thriving and desirable parts of the city.
Understandably, because of that popularity, there has been an interest in
the real estate that Town currently occupies. In fact, the building has been sold
in previous years and we have had multiple landlords since we have been in
operation. Now, the building has been sold once again. This sale was not a
surprise to us and we have a great relationship with our new landlord who is
excited to have us as their tenant. We also enjoy solid lease terms and we intend
and fully expect to be throwing parties in our current location for years to come.
Representatives of Jeerson Apartment Group declined to comment, and its
intentions for the site are unknown, the Washington Business Journal reports.
But the Journal says the development company typically develops apartment
buildings with retail shops on the ground oor on the land it acquires.
News of the sale of the Town building comes less than a year after the owner
of the building in which the gay nightclub Ziegfelds-Secrets is located, in the
citys Buzzards Point section, sold that building to a developer. The sale followed
approval by the city of the construction of a new soccer stadium across the
street from the Ziegfelds-Secrets building.
Ziegfelds-Secrets owner Alan Carroll has said the developer that bought the
building doesnt expect to displace or evict his club for four or ve years since
the property is not on the footprint of the soccer stadium.

Gay Logan Circle Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner John Fanning was the only
one of six gay candidates running to become Hillary Clinton delegates to the Democratic
National Convention in Philadelphia this summer.

Protesters target opening of Clinton D.C. office

A gay longtime anti-war activist dressed in drag as Hillary Clinton was among a halfdozen protesters who picketed outside a storefront oce on Capitol Hill on May 18 that
hosted a reception to mark the opening of one of two Clinton campaign oces in D.C.
Among those walking past the protesters as they entered the newly opened campaign
oce were D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D.C. Congressional Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, and
D.C. Council member Charles Allen (D-Ward 6). One of the protesters, gay activist David
Barrows, wore a Hillary mask and a dress as he and the other protesters called Clinton a
war monger for backing U.S. military eorts in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries.
The protest was organized by the anti-war womens group Code Pink.
Meanwhile, inside the campaign oce, more than 50 Clinton supporters in attendance
cheered Bowser and Norton as the two hailed Clintons longstanding support for D.C.
statehood and D.C. budget autonomy from Congress.
She is with us on the issues, Norton told the gathering. She said, Eleanor, Ive always
been for statehood. We have to show her we mean it on June 14, said Norton, who
was referring to the citys June 14 Democratic primary in which Clinton and Democratic
challenger Sen. Bernie Sanders will be on the ballot.
Among the Clinton supporters attending the oce opening event were gay Democratic
activists Phil Pannell and Michael Ramirez.

Longtime Baltimore gay bar loses liquor license

Drinkery patrons accused
of disorderly conduct
By STEVE CHARING
The recently appointed Baltimore City
Board of Liquor License Commissioners
voted not to renew the liquor license of
The Drinkery, a mainstay of the Mount
Vernon neighborhood since 1972, at a
hearing on May 19. The vote was 2-1.
The establishment, on the corner of
Park Avenue and Read Streets billed itself
as a gay bar and a dive bar.
After listening to nearly three hours
of testimony, Commissioners Dana
Peterson Moore and Albert J. Matricciani
ruled in favor of the protesters; Aaron
Greeneld voted against.
About 15 people who backed the eort
to prevent the license renewal and two
dozen in support of The Drinkery attended
the hearing at City Hall. Among those
present who supported the protesters was
Baltimore City Councilman Eric Costello who
had led written testimony opposing the
bars license renewal. City Council President
Bernard C. Jack Young also submitted
a letter supporting the protesters. Jason
Curtis, the former president of the Mount
Vernon-Belvedere Association, was among
those who testied against The Drinkery.
According to charges on the petition
with 35 validated signatures: Patrons
are often disorderly and disruptive
as they leave the premises; patrons
regularly loiter and litter on the sidewalks
surrounding the premises; patrons
engage in violent altercations inside
the establishment that spill out into the
surrounding neighborhood; drug activity
occurs both in and on the periphery of
the establishment; and patrons discard
trash throughout the community.
Melvin J. Kodenski, who represented
The Drinkery at the hearing, moved
to dismiss the case based on a lack of
specicity to these charges but was
overruled by the chair, Matricciani.
Mark Henderson, who identied
himself as gay man who lives near the
establishment on Read Street, said that
management let the place go and that
[management] doesnt care about the
noise and violence. Henderson specied
loitering and bringing drinks outside and
said he contacted the owner, Frederick
Allen to help with the problems to no avail.
Michael Pugh, who is also gay and lives
on the same street as The Drinkery, testied
that prostitutes, drug dealers and johns
hang outside the bar during the day but it
becomes a pirates cove of intense activity
at night. He added there was a need to
clean up blood, condoms, and vomit on a
daily basis. Pugh said there was horrendous
noise at closing and people come out of the

bar with glasses and bottles.

Two Baltimore City Police ocers
testied that they had responded to
a number of complaints of disorderly
conduct and assaults but admitted under
cross examination by Kodenski that
no arrests had ever been made inside
the bar based on any complaints. They
produced City Watch photos of a knife
ght in the street outside the bar but did
not establish that the individuals involved
were connected to The Drinkery.
On behalf of The Drinkery, Mark S.
Fosler, chief inspector for the Baltimore
City Liquor Board, testied that only three
311 complaint calls were received by his
oce and those complaints were not
substantiated.

Other patrons testied that any

arguments inside the bar had been
handled by sta and that the issue of
people hanging outside the bar was due
to the non-smoking policy inside bars.
Anthony Pressley, a regular customer
who is African-American, said he never
saw a ght or broken bottles as alleged
by the protesters. He suggested there is a
racial motivation to the bars opposition.
Kodenski produced a petition of
support for The Drinkery with more than
500 signatures and a host of awards and
citations given to Allen, the owner, by
elected ocials over the years.
Allen, 87, disputed the accusations.
He had been a resident in an apartment
above the bar for more than 40 years.

Allen said beverages are sold only in cans,

not bottles. In his 44 years associated
with The Drinkery, Allen testied that
there had been no arrests inside the bar
and that he cannot be held responsible
for actions taking place on a city street.
Commissioner Moore, in voting for the
protesters, stated, What matters are the
facts and cited contempt by the owner
toward the community.
Kodenski told the Blade he will appeal
the decision.
The Drinkery was a melting pot for
everyone to meet and have a great time,
RJ Ladd, a frequent patron of the bar, told
the Blade. It will be dearly missed by us
all as it was one of the last remaining gay
bars in Baltimore.

Barry Smythers-Wieczorek dies at 34

Beloved hairstylist remembered as caring, generous

Barry Smythers-Wieczorek, 34, a D.C. hairstylist,

sports enthusiast and advocate for AIDS-related
causes, died May 21 in Washington. Friends said
he took his own life.
It is with a heavy heart that we announce
that on Saturday afternoon our beloved friend
and family member Barry Smythers sent himself
home to heaven, a message posted by friends
on a Facebook page says.
Father Rich Vitale, a priest at D.C.s Church of
the Holy City and longtime friend of SmythersWieczorek, called Smythers-Wieczorek a warm

and caring person who touched the lives of

every single person he met.
Vitale said in addition to his role as a popular
hairstylist at the Logan 14 Aveda Salon and Spa on 14th Street, N.W., Smythers-Wieczorek was an avid participant in the citys
gay sports scene, especially the Stonewall Kickball Club.
He said Smythers-Wieczorek also was active with the AIDS LifeCycle bicycle riding events, which raise money for AIDSrelated causes.
According to Vitale, Smythers-Wieczorek was born and raised in La Plata, Md. Smythers-Wieczoreks Facebook page says he
graduated from Henry E. Lackey High School in Indian Head, Md.
On Facebook, Smythers-Wieczorek wrote that an important milestone in his life happened in 2007, when he met Thomas
Wieczorek, to whom he became engaged in 2009 and married in 2011.
Molly Ryan, manager of the Logan 14 Aveda Salon and Spa, said Smythers-Wieczorek attended the Graham Webb
International Academy of Hair in Arlington, Va., and became a licensed hair stylist in 2007 or 2008. She said he worked at other
D.C. hair salons before joining the sta of Logan 14 in 2015.
He just truly was someone to light up any room he walked into, Ryan said. He was just so generous and thoughtful with
everybody, she said. His clients had such an amazing relationship with him. He was passionate about his craft. He was
inspirational and a leader to others within our salon.
Ryan said Smythers-Wieczorek was also highly committed to social justice and public health causes, including fundraising
for AIDS prevention eorts, public education and research.
He denitely brought that passion to his co-workers and he got everybody involved with fundraising, she said.
He was just pure joy and love and just a wonderful, wonderful person, Vitale said. He will be missed terribly because he
was just so loved.
A celebration of life/memorial service for Smythers-Wieczorek was scheduled to take place on May 25 at Church of the Holy
City followed by a funeral Mass.

Charlotte balks at

Compromise unravels,

GLORIA ESTEFAN said she would nd it tough to return to Cuba.

Estefan not ready to perform in Cuba

MIAMI Gloria Estefan last week said she is not ready to perform in Cuba,
even though the U.S. has normalized relations with her homeland.
I personally would nd it very tough to go there, she said in a video the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame released on May 18.
Estefan was born in Havana. Her family ed to Miami after Fidel Castro toppled
then-President Fulgencio Batista in the 1959 Cuban revolution.
Estefan said during the clip that Juanes, a Colombian singer, invited her to
attend a concert he gave in Cuba. She acknowledged the Rolling Stones had a
great concert in Havana in March, but stressed she cannot get on a stage with
a million Cubans in front of me and not say something.
I also wouldnt want to cause any violence, she said. I dont want to end up
in jail. I dont want to look at Che Guevara watching me while I sing Mi Tierra
and Cuba Libre, which is a joke, and leave and leave the people in the same
situation as they are.
Estefan and her husband, Emilio Estefan, attended a Family Equality Council
gala in New York earlier this month. The Cuban-born singer was the grand
marshal of the 2014 Miami Beach Gay Pride parade.

Anti-trans bill dies in Okla. House

OKLAHOMA CITY A bill that would have required school districts to
provide separate bathrooms to students who object to sharing them with their
transgender classmates has died in the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
The Associated Press reported members of a House committee voted 10-10 on
whether to advance Senate Bill 1619. The tie vote ensured the measures defeat.
We are proud of the fair-minded legislators who stopped this madness at the
Capitol, but this bill should have never been proposed in the rst place, said
Troy Stevenson, executive director of Freedom Oklahoma, a statewide LGBT
advocacy group.
The May 24 vote took place less than a month after the Justice Department
led a lawsuit against North Carolina over House Bill 2, which prohibits trans
people from using public restrooms consistent with their gender identity and
bans municipalities from enacting LGBT-inclusive non-discrimination measures.

Prominent journalist writes about trans son

LAS VEGAS A prominent political reporter in Nevada has written about his
transgender sons transition.
Jon Ralston wrote on May 23 that his son Jake began taking testosterone
about six months ago to begin the process of becoming who she really is.
This week, Maddy went to court, bravely told a judge why she wanted to be a
male and wanted her birth certicate changed, too, wrote Jon Ralston, referring
to his son by his birth name. After the hearing, when it was nally real, when he
called me, I dont think I have ever heard my kid sound so happy. And he wanted
the storytold.
When I get home later this week, I will see someone ocially named Jake
Ralston for the rst time, he added. And one thing I know for certain: It will be
love at rst sight.
Jon Ralston published his piece less than a month after SAVE, a South Florida
LGBT advocacy group, released a PSA that features U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
(R-Fla.), her husband and their trans son, Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen.

Amid reports a potential compromise

was in the works over North Carolinas
anti-LGBT law in which Charlotte would
repeal its LGBT non-discrimination
ordinance, such a move now seems
unlikely in the aftermath of the removal
of the issue from the Charlotte City
Council agenda Monday night.
Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts
armed at the start of the city council
weekly meeting discussion wouldnt
take place on the ordinance, which
state lawmakers cited as the reason for
enacting House Bill 2.
There will be no discussion item
or action item on HB 2 tonight on our
agenda, Roberts said. I have been
talking to council members and others
throughout this day. Collectively, we
concluded that discussion of HB 2 by the
city council tonight would not be helpful
in advancing a solution to ongoing
challenges of HB 2.
LGBT advocates had urged the Charlotte
City Council to resist repealing its ordinance,
which was nullied by House Bill 2, amid
calls to do so as part of a compromise
openly suggested by Charlotte Chamber
CEO Bob Morgan. Under the compromise,
after Charlotte repealed its LGBT nondiscrimination ordinance, the state
legislature would undo HB 2.
Later in the meeting, Republican
Charlotte City Council member Kenny
Smith proposed a resolution to place
repealing the ordinance on the agenda for
Wednesday. The proposal failed 7-4, the
same vote in which the council approved
the resolution in February. It appears
based on that vote the city council wont
act to repeal its ordinance in the future as
part of any compromise.
Smith had stern words for including
Human Rights Campaign President
Chad Grin, whom he blamed for the
estimated $567 million in loss of business
to the North Carolina as a result of HB 2.
I just want to go ocially on the record
supporting the chamber in criticizing
the HRC for the language they used
towards them to imply theyre bigots
when theyre in their mind working for a
way to expand LGBT rights throughout
our community, Smith said. Its easy for
Chad Grin to come down here and wag
his nger. He lives in, I think, Washington,
D.C. He doesnt have to live through the
consequences of our inaction.

Charlotte wont repeal its ordinance as part

of a compromise to undo House Bill 2.
SCREEN CAPTURE COURTESY OF WRAL

Charlotte City Council member LaWana

Mayeld, a Democrat, spoke out against
repealing the ordinance during the
meeting, saying the responsibility to
take action rests squarely with the state
legislature that enacted HB 2.
We didnt have any business tell
Charlotte, You know what? Yall passed
this ordinance, so were leaving, Mayeld
said. No. In fact, we had business lined up
to come immediately after we passed our
ordinance. It wasnt until weeks later that
our General Assembly passed legislation
that was sweeping that business said,
You know what? That is not where we
want to take our employees because we
care enough about our employees that
we want them to be protected.
Signed into law by North Carolina
Gov. Pat McCrory after a single day of
deliberation by the state legislature,
HB 2 undoes all pro-LGBT city nondiscrimination ordinances in the state,
including the one recently enacted in
Charlotte, and prohibits transgender
people from using public restrooms
in schools and government buildings
consistent with their gender identity.
Prior to the vote, the council heard
remarks from individuals seeking to meet
public statements, which Monday night
included national and local LGBT advocates.
Among them was Grin, who
referred to HB 2 as a nightmare and
said responsibility rests solely on the
legislature to correct it.
There is only one entity to blame, there
is only one governor who signed HB 2 and
there is only one solution to the nightmare
that he created, and that is a full and
complete repeal of HB 2, Grin said.

Sanders responds to trans questionnaire but not Clinton

Trump also fails to answer
Trans United Fund
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
A newly formed pro-transgender
political action committee has sent out
a questionnaire to each of the major
2016 presidential candidates but only
Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders
has responded.
The Trans United Fund, launched
in April with the goal of building the
transgender communitys political power,
sent out a questionnaire to campaigns
for both Hillary Clinton and Sanders.
Although the Clinton campaign initially
signaled it would answer the questions,
the campaign has yet to return the
questionnaire, the committee says.
Monica Roberts, a Houston-based
advisory member of the Trans United Fund
presidential endorsement committee,
chided Clinton for neglecting to respond
to the survey, saying o-the-record
commitments from political candidates on
trans rights areno longer sucient.
We believe that the secretary is a
champion on trans rights issues and are
perplexed by the campaigns reluctance to
follow through and go on the record with
stating that commitment, Roberts said.
We believe its important - not just for us but also for our community, our allies and

the people like myself who enthusiastically

voted for you in the various primary
contests - to have the benet of responses
from both candidates.
The 15-page questionnaire prepared
for the candidates covers a range of
transgender issues, seeking candidates
positions on transgender employment as
well as access to transition-related health
care, education and housing.
In his responses, Sanders arms
support for trans rights in each of these
areas. Additionally, he volunteers a
proposed executive order requiring
all federal employees to have access
to workplace facilities consistent with
their gender identity and to establish an

interagency working group to increase

opportunities for the trans community.
The candidate also recommits himself
to ghting HIV/AIDS in response to
questions on the epidemic and pledges to
work to reform state HIV criminalization
laws, which to varying degree penalize
the transfer of HIV.
Sanders identies as his greatest
achievement for transgender people
his role in enacting the Aordable Care
Act, which he says secured $11 billion to
expand the network of Federally Qualied
Health Centers to assist minority
communities like transgender people.
But Sanders didnt respond to all of
the questions. One on whether he has
employed a transgender person to work
for him in a government and business
context, and another on whether he
supports the legalization of sex work
were left unanswered.
Many of Sanders answers reect his
responses during an interview last year
with the Washington Blade in which he
promised to make transgender people
visible in his administration and became
the rst presidential candidate to endorse
openly transgender military service.
Its unclear why the Clinton campaign
didnt respond to the questions. The
Clinton campaign didnt respond to the
Washington Blades request to provide an
explanation for why responses werent
returned.
Bamby Salcedo, advisory member

of the Trans United Fund presidential

endorsement committee, echoed the call
for the Clinton campaign to complete the
questionnaire.
The trans community is under attack,
and in order for us to make a credible,
and impactful endorsement, we need a
commitment from our leaders on issues
that make life or death dierences for
trans people, Salcedo said. That is why
we created a survey that included key
issues like violence and HIV as well as
non-discrimination and bullying. We
believe - and we believe the secretary
believes - that these are political issues.
And thats why were holding rm
that both candidates should honor
their commitment to complete the
questionnaire and let our community and
our allies know where they stand.
In her LGBT platform, Clinton says shell
make trans issues a priority, including
protecting transgender people from
violence, streamlining identity documents
and investing in law enforcement training
for interactions with LGBT people.
Clinton also made HIV/AIDS a prominent
component of her campaign, has met
with HIV/AIDS activists and has called for
end to HIV criminalization laws.
The Trans United Fund also sent a
questionnaire to presumptive Republican
presidential nominee Donald Trump.
According to the political action
committee, Trump also didnt respond to
the questionnaire.

A taste of Trumps anti-LGBT judicial picks

The most anti-gay nominee
in recent memory
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Conservatives are hailing Donald
Trumps choices for potential nominees
to the U.S. Supreme Court, but a quick
look at the names reveals jurists with a
history of anti-LGBT positions.
Trump this week revealed a list of 11
individuals he would considernominating
to ll the seat of the late U.S. Associate
Justice Antonin Scalia.
The individual on Trumps list who has
the worst anti-LGBT reputation is U.S.
Circuit Judge William Pryor, who sits on
the U.S. Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
Upon his nomination to the court in
2004 by President George W. Bush, the
LGBT group Lambda Legal dubbed him
the most demonstrably anti-gay judicial
nominee in recent memory.
In 2002, Pryor as an attorney coauthored a friend-of-the-court brief in the

case of Lawrence v. Texas urging justices

to uphold state bans on sodomy, which
would have the eect of enabling jail time
in some states for gay people who engage
in consensual sex.
The 36-page brief says a court ruling
against state sodomy laws must logically
extend to activities like prostitution,
adultery,
necrophilia,
bestiality,
possession of child pornography, and
even incest and pedophilia.
Laws teach people what they should
and should not do, based on the
experiences of their elders, the brief
says. The States should not be required
to accept, as a matter of constitutional
doctrine, that homosexual activity is
harmless and does not expose both the
individual and the public to deleterious
spiritual and physical consequences.
But as a judge on the Eleventh
Circuit, Pryor in 2011 joined a surprising
decision in the case of Glenn v. Brumby,
which determined anti-trans workplace
discrimination amounts to gender
discrimination under current law.
Also among Trumps list of potential

judicial nominees is U.S. Circuit Judge

Diane Sykes, an appointee of President
George W. Bush who sits on the U.S.
Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
In 2006, she issued an opinion in
Christian Legal Society v. Walker that
determined college groups are entitled to
receive public university funding even if
they engage in anti-LGBT discrimination.
The lawsuit was led by the Christian
Legal Society chapter at Southern Illinois
University School of Law after the dean
revoked the groups ocial status, and
therefore access to school funds, because
the chapter precluded membership to
those who engage in sexual conduct
outside marriage, which includes gay
people.
Sykes concluded the Christian Legal
Society didnt engage in discriminatory
conduct because it made an exception to
include gay people who refrained entirely
from having sex.
The same is true of unmarried
heterosexual
persons:
heterosexual
persons who do not participate in or
condone heterosexual conduct outside

of marriage may become CLS members;

those who engage in unmarried
heterosexual conduct and do not repent
that conduct and arm the statement
of faith may not, Sykes said. CLSs
membership policies are thus based on
belief and behavior rather than status, and
no language in SIUs policy prohibits this.
Also on the list is Minnesota Supreme
Court Justice David Straus. As reported
by The Advocate, Straus was in the court
majority in a case that overturned a
decision to change the ballot for an antigay marriage amendment to make it
clear it would prohibit gay couples from
marrying.
Lawmakers wanted the ballot title
to be Recognition of Marriage Solely
Between One Man and One Woman, but
Secretary of State Mark Ritchie instead
selected Limiting the Status of Marriage
to Opposite Sex Couples. Although
the court reversed the ballot title to the
lawmakers choice, voters defeated the
amendment in 2012.

A glimpse into another side of Cuba

Gay man spent ve years
in prison for fake ID
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
TAVERNIER, Fla. It was breezy,
yet sunny Sunday afternoon at Henry
Harris County Park in the Upper Florida
Keys. Coconut palm trees lined the calm
water in which a few dozen people
mostly young children and their Spanishspeaking relatives who were watching
them were swimming. The rst
landmass that one would reach if he or
she were to have sailed directly south
from this point of land would be a group
of islands near the Cuban city of Sagua la
Grande, which is less than 150 miles away
on the other side of the Florida Straits.
Life couldnt be any more dierent
for those who live on this side of the
treacherous body of water that has taken
the lives of untold numbers of Cubans
who sought a better life in the wake of the
1959 revolution.
I met Samuel, a 23-year-old man, at
Cabaret Las Vegas, an unocial gay club
in Havanas Vedado neighborhood, on my
rst night in his country. I was completely
exhausted from lack of sleep, but we
immediately hit it o and he gave me his
phone number before I walked the block
to the house in which I was staying.
Samuel and I met again at Cabaret Las
Vegas on Sunday night, and it became
immediately clear that he was going to
be my Cuban BFF during this reporting
trip. I returned to Havana on May 19 and I
once again returned to Cabaret Las Vegas
where Samuel, his friends and I watched
drag queens, cabaret singers and dancers
perform while drinking a bottle of Cuban
rum with a Sprite-like soda and Red
Bull. The four of us had what can only
be described as a wonderful time in the
Communist islands capital city for the
better part of three hours. We did the
same thing the following night, even
though a car was picking me up at 5 a.m.
to drive me to Jos Mart International
Airport to return to the U.S.
I learned a lot about Samuel in the
week that I was in Cuba.
He traveled to Denmark with a group
of fellow dancers when he was 10 years
old. Samuel recently earned a degree,
but only makes the equivalent of $17 a
month. He also spent ve years in prison
from the age of 16 because he was caught
using a fake ID to try to get into a disco.
Samuel is only one of the myriad stories
I have heard from Cubans who clearly
deserve better from their government.
The woman who drove me to the
airport on Saturday morning with her
teenage son in the backseat of her car is

a pharmacist who makes less than $100

a month on her state salary. She is also a
friend of the woman who ran the house
in which I stayed while in Havana.
I gave the pharmacist the $25 that I had
previously agreed to pay her, knowing it
was better to do so before arriving at the
airport because of surveillance cameras.
She told me shortly after we drove away
from the house to say that I was her friend
who didnt know much about Cuba if the
police stopped the car for any reason. The
pharmacist then proceeded to criticize the
Communist islands government for the
rest of the drive to the airport that took
about half an hour.
She specically mocked the countrys
public health system that Cubans can
access for free, saying it barely meets
peoples most basic needs.
The Cuban people are genuinely among
the warmest and most welcoming people I
have ever had the good fortune of meeting
in my travels outside the U.S. They deserve
better than what their government has
given or not given them.
The aforementioned reality remained
with me throughout my trip to Cuba.
It remains with me on this side of the
Florida Straits.
The Cuban people, including those
who openly support the Communist
islands government, welcomed me to
their beautiful island with open arms.
We danced together. We drank a lot of
very good and very inexpensive rum.
We learned from each other against
the backdrop of the normalization of
diplomatic relations between our two
countries. I also saw rst hand the
struggles they must confront on a daily
basis in order to maintain the most basic

standards of living and personal dignity.

Samuel and I said goodbye to each
other at around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday. I
watched him walk away into the night with
a plastic bag of things that I didnt need to
bring back to the U.S. with me: An extra
roll of toilet paper from the house in which
I stayed, a half-used bottle of sunscreen,
a pack of AA batteries, the Cuban cell
phone that I bought at the state-run
telecommunications store earlier in my
trip, an unopened tube of Neosporin, a box
of Band-Aids, an old belt and some money
to help him buy a fan for the apartment in
which he lives with his mother.
I then walked to Havanas oceanfront
promenade, which was a couple of blocks
away from my house and from where
I said goodbye to Samuel. There were
hundreds of young Cubans partying
along the iconic Malecn, but I could have
been there by myself as I silently gazed
out into the Florida Straits.

I deliberately played Cuban-born Gloria

Estefans song Cuba Libre on my iPod
with headphones in my ears as I sat there
and thought about my week in Cuba that
was about to come to an end. Three lines
from that song particularly resonated with
me in those few moments as I thought
about Samuel and the other Cubans who I
had met over the last seven days.
No puedo olvidar Eres parte de mi Te
quiero ser feliz
I cannot forget You are part of me I
want for you to be happy
Samuel called me on my cell phone
while I was in my hotel room in Miami
Beach to make sure that I had arrived
safely in the U.S. The call lasted about 30
seconds before he abruptly hung up.
I wish nothing more than for Samuel
and all of the wonderful Cuban friends that
I made while in their country to be happy,
to be to live their lives with dignity and to
be able to control their own destiny.

to contemplate that even the possibility

of no progress on the issues I care most
about is more attractive than the damage
that might be done to our movement
should Trump be elected, Juro said.
Nonetheless, Juro said she remains
concerned about Clinton because of lingering
questions about whether the candidate will
remain committed to her stated policies once
elected to the White House.
Im more than a little concerned that
well see the same thing from Clinton on
trans equality as we did from Obama: Lots
of progressive-sounding promises made
during the campaign, but no credible
action taken until several years later,
Juro said. In addition, while Sanders has
been consistent with his support for full
equality for all LGBT people for many
years, its only during this election cycle
that Clinton has positively declared her
support for true LGBT equality. To me,
that makes her a bit too late to the party
to be able to trust fully.
Clinton enjoys an overwhelming lead
in the Democratic presidential primary,
having secured 2,287 delegates compared
to Sanders 1,490. Despite now being
unable to win the Democratic nomination
by claiming states that have yet to hold
primary contests, Sanders has said
hes basing his continued run on urging
superdelegates in the states where he
won a majority of the vote to switch their
allegiance from Clinton to him.
Sanders has made clear he intends
to continue his candidacy through the
California Democratic primary on June
7, when a motherlode of 476 delegates
are up for grabs, up until the Democratic
National Convention in July.
Wayne Besen, a gay rights supporter
known for working against ex-gay
therapy who voted for Sanders in the
primary, said all Democrats should unite
behind Clinton in the aftermath of the
California primary.
I am a strong supporter of Bernie
Sanders, Besen said. At this point,
however, it would take a miracle for
him to win the nomination. After the
California primary all Democrats should
unite behind Hillary Clinton. The stakes
are simply too high. For those who are
holding out I have four words: Donald
Trump. Supreme Court.
Many prominent LGBT rights advocates
have declared their support for Clinton.
LGBT organizations that have endorsed
Clinton include Equality California, the
Human Rights Campaign and the Equality
PAC. The Washington Blade endorsed
Clinton earlier this month.
Stampp Corbin, a gay San Diego-based
Clinton supporter and publisher of San
Diego LGBT Weekly, said he expects the

Clinton campaign to welcome Sanders

supporters with open arms.
I understand the Sanders supporters
ghting until the end, it is very similar to
the Clinton supporters in 2008, Corbin
said. When I was the National Co-Chair
of the Obama LGBT Leadership Council,
I welcomed the Clinton supporters when
they came home. I would expect that
the Sanders supporters will also come
home this year. I mean is there really
any other alternative for actively involved
democratic voters? If you really care
about our country, Trump, or not voting,
is not an option.
The tension in the Democratic primary
piqued earlier this month during a highly
contentious Democratic Party state
convention in Nevada. Although Sanders
had more slots than Clinton, Nevada State
Democratic Party Chair Roberta Lange
awarded more delegates for Clinton at
the national convention because the
Sanders campaign only lled 78 percent
of his available slots. The result inspired
consternation directed at the state party
among Sanders supporters, which made
national headlines.
In addition to being booed at the
convention, Lange later faced death
threats. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.),
a Clinton supporter, was booed o the
stage and later said she feared for her life.
Accusations emerged Sanders supporters
reacted violently at the convention, but
they have denied any violence took place.
Charging that the Democratic National
Committee has treated him unfairly
during the presidential primary and the
process is rigged, Sanders has endorsed
the primary candidate challenging
DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz
for her U.S. House seat representing
Floridas 23rd congressional district. Her
challenger is Tim Canova, a law professor

who shares Sanders worldview and seeks

to break up Wall Street.
Seth Barkman, a gay Baltimore resident
and co-owner of MiY Home furniture
store, is among the Sanders backers who
said his support remains unwavering
and blamed the DNC for his candidates
current standing.
My support for Bernie Sanders is one
of principle and those dont change just
because of the powerful inuence of the
DNC, Barkman said.
Barkman added even if Sanders decides
to drop out of the race, the movement
the candidate created will continue.

I will continue to support him and

other forward-thinking progressives
until big money is no longer in control of
our political system, Barkman said. My
morals wont change if he decides to drop
out. I hope he does not.
Barkman said its tough to say
whether hell vote for Clinton in the
general election if shes the nominee.
I will never vote for Trump, ever,
Barkman said. I will not vote for Hillary
either if her political platform becomes
less progressive and she starts sounding
like a moderate Republican in the
general election.

Biden commends gay West Point cadet

Vice President Joseph Biden praised on Monday a gay West Point cadet in the
graduating class of 2016 who has the distinction of being both rst captain and
class president.
Biden commended the cadet, E.J. Coleman, at the U.S. Military Academy at
West Point, New York, where the vice president spokeat a graduation ceremony.
Ladies and gentlemen, E.J. Coleman, your First Captain and Class President, is
only the third cadet in the history of West Point to hold both those roles, Biden
said. His name will live alongside John J. Pershing and Pete Dawkins, as the only
other two. And not long ago, he took the lessons you have learned here about
being authentic to heart, and had the courage to publicly come out to [West
Point Superintendent] Gen. [Robert] Caslen.
The vice president recalled Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal under the Obama
administration in 2010, which he said ended the politics of discrimination
against LGBT members.
Six years ago, E.J. would have been discharged fromthe Army, and we would
have lost an incredible talent, Biden said. Thanks for your courage, E.J., for your
leadership. I expect were going to hear big things from you, pal.
Despite Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal, openly transgender service members
are still barred from the armed forces as a result of medical regulation.
We cant aord to leave the talents of any individual on the sidelines, Biden
said. The needs are too great. Our challenges are too large.

N.C. ap likely played role in Giant Food incident

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 01

Superior Court Judge Renee Raymond

ordered Jones released on personal
recognizance pending a July 21 status
hearing on the condition that Jones stay
away from Belcher and not attempt in
any way to establish contact with her.
You must remain at least 100 yards
away from her the length of a football
eld, Raymond told her. Raymond also
ordered Jones to undergo drug testing
to determine whether she should enter a
drug treatment program.
Jones attorney, Joel Davidson, told
the Blade after the court arraignment
that neither Jones nor he would have an
immediate comment on the case.
Giant Food spokesperson Jamie Miller
told local media outlets that Jones was
employed by a private security company
under contract with Giant.
As this matter involves a third party
that provides security services for
Giant and theres an ongoing criminal
investigation, all inquiries related to the
incident at the H Street Giant should be
directed to the local police for a comment
at this time, Miller said in a statement.
Transgender activists familiar with the case
said they were alarmed that an incident like
this would surface in D.C., where the citys
comprehensive Human Rights Act bans
discrimination based on sexual orientation
and gender identity and expression.
Veteran D.C. transgender advocate
Earline Budd, an ocial with the LGBT
supportive social services group HIPS,
said the Giant security guards action may
have been fueled, in part, by the widely
publicized anti-trans bills surfacing in
state legislatures across the country,
including North Carolina.
Budd said she was especially troubled
that the security guard told Belcher
several times during the altercation that
transgender people werent protected
under D.C. law.
In a statement to the Blade, Monica
Palacios, director of the D.C. Oce of
Human Rights, said the right of trans
people to use the bathroom that reects
their gender identity is fully protected
under the Human Rights Acts public
accommodation provision.
The Districts law is clear: transgender
and gender non-conforming people
may at all times and in all circumstances
use the bathroom they believe is most
appropriate given their gender identity
and expression, Palacios said.
Although we cannot comment on a
specic incident because a complaint
of discrimination could be led with
our oce, the transgender community
should know D.C. law protects them from
discrimination and they should never
be denied access to the appropriate

bathroom while in the District, she said.

HIPS is outraged to hear that a
transgender woman was assaulted
yesterday by a security guard as she
attempted to use the restroom in our
local Giant store, HIPS said in a statement
released on Thursday by Budd and the
groups executive director, Cyndee Clay.
As an organization, we oer services,
support, and advocacy to transgender
women every day and witness the
impact of compounded oppression,

discrimination, and transphobia, the

statement says.
The statement adds that discrimination
against trans people is not limited to
bathrooms, but also surfaces in medical
facilities, jobs, on the streets, and in housing.
To address this issue, HIPS calls for
expansive cultural competency training
of all employees in the District, including
Giant and the security company involved
in this incident, the statement says.
The police report says Jones was placed

under arrest and charged with simple

assault, a misdemeanor, at the scene and
taken to the First District Police Station
for processing. Court records show she
was held in custody overnight before
being taken to court on Thursday.
Like others taken to court after spending
the night in jail, Jones was escorted into
the arraignment courtroom while bound
with handcus and leg chains, which were
removed by U.S. Marshalls after Judge
Raymond ordered her released.

IN HER OWN WORDS: Victim details alleged assault

The full text of the Blades interview with Ebony Belcher
follows.
Washington Blade: Can you describe what happened and
how the incident at the Giant supermarket started?
Ebony Belcher: I went to the Giant to originally go to the
Western Union but I had to use the restroom. So while going
into the Giant to use the Western Union because there
is a Western Union there Francine observed me when I
walked into [the store], she spoke to me. She acknowledged
me. I acknowledged her back.
I asked a Giant employee, where was the restroom? So
she directed me to the restroom. She said I had to walk
around the corridor past customer service to the walkwaybreezeway area. Once I entered the restroom I was in the
restroom for about a minute and then all of a sudden the
door comes ying open and I hear someone just talking.
And the individual starts stating that this is ridiculous, this
is getting out of hand. I know youre a man and youre not
supposed to be using the womens bathroom. They havent
passed the law yet you faggot, you he-she. She called me
all types of derogatory names. She humiliated me and
embarrassed me all while I was using the bathroom.
I say maam, are you seriously talking to me? She said yes
Im talking to you. You know Im talking to you, you man. And
I said oh God, maam; can I just get a little privacy in using
the restroom? She said no, youre lucky Im letting you use
the bathroom. I said OK. I continued to use the restroom. I
washed my hands. I exited the restroom.

Blade: When she rst came into the bathroom were you
in a stall?
Belcher: When she rst came in the bathroom I was
in the stall. And the whole time I was in the stall she had
the entrance area to the bathroom door open. She was
hollering, calling obscene gestures and names while I was
in the restroom. I said maam can I at least she said no. So
I left the restroom. I made a left to go to the Giant to go use
the Western Union. And as I was exiting the restroom she
grabs me by my arms, spins me around grabbing me by my
back and pushes me out of the door.
I said maam do you know I work for the HRC? She said I
dont give an F who you work for. They didnt pass the law. I
knew you were a man when you rst walked into the Giant.
You had no right coming into the females bathroom. I said
maam I didnt pass myself as a transgender woman. I said
I have I.D. Im legally a woman. She said I dont care what

you are. You are not supposed to use the females restroom.
They did not pass the law yet.
And upon her pushing me all the way out of the Giant,
a Giant employee was at the doorway the whole time she
was making those derogatory slurs while I was using the
restroom. She was invading my privacy, my personal space,
my human rights. It was totally embarrassing and I felt
horrible about that. And just now I had to use the restroom.
I was distraught going into the restroom in public places
now because of this incident. I dont know whether or not
someone is going to come behind me and try to attack me
again for using the restroom because thats who I am.
Blade: You mentioned you are working at HRC. When did
you start there?
Belcher: I started working at HRC Human Rights
Campaign on Friday of last week.

Blade: Are you with a particular department at HRC?

Belcher: Im in the canvassing department. Were raising
money for the Equality Act, to try to get the Equality Act
passed in Congress. And when I told her she said I dont give
an F--- who you work for.

Blade: After you were pushed out of the store were you
on the street?
Belcher: No, when she pushed me out of the door Im
sorry, as she was pushing me out of the door out of the
Giant I said maam, do you know I have Parkinsons disease?
I said I battle with walking every day and you pushed me I
almost fell and once I got out of the door I got in my truck,
my van, and I pulled o and I went around the corner. And
while I was driving around the corner I dialed 911. I reached
the dispatcher.
And then the police ocers came. They were nice to me.
They assisted me in the whole situation.
Blade: And they interviewed you?
Belcher: They interviewed me.

Blade: Did the police LGBT Liaison Unit people come?

Belcher: Yes. [Sgt.] Jessica Hawkins [supervisor of the
LGBT Liaison Unit], she came.

Blade: And after that

Belcher: And they advised me that I was in the right to go
into the restroom.

Honor Our LGBT Elders Day a success

While some local LGBT organizations have focused their mission on LGBTQ
youth, the LGBT Health Resource Center (LHRC) of Chase Brexton Health Care
has recognized the need to address the rapidly aging LGBT population.
The organization launched a program last September called SAGECAP
Baltimore to improve care for older LGBT individuals who often live alone.
SAGECAP is an initiative that will provide resources, education and support for
informal, unpaid LGBT caregivers in the community.
Most recently, LHRC decided to pay homage to LGBT elders by launching the
rst-ever National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day on May 17. The inaugural event,
which featured multi-media tributes, including portraits of LGBT elders adorning
the walls, took place in and around the community room at Chase Brexton
where more than 70 attended.
The goal of this occasion was to acknowledge the lives of older LGBT adults who
changed the tide in our society and hear their stories, said Nate Sweeney, executive
director of LHRC, at a ceremony prior to unveiling portraits of two elder transgender
individuals. Monica Stevens and Jean-Michel Brevelle were honored for their work in
raising awareness of the plight of transgender individuals in Maryland.
In addition, several other elder LGBT individuals were honored through
digital storytelling as a result of a partnership between LHRC and the University
of Maryland Baltimore County who sought to record the life stories of older
LGBT adults. Those featured included Louise Parker Kelley, Lou Hughes, Breezy
Bishop, Ken Gault and Greg Grenier.
The presentations were followed by an LGBT Elder Day pinning ceremony
where commemorative pins were given out to mark the event.
We were absolutely thrilled that the LGBT Health Resource Center of Chase
Brexton Health Care was able to launch National Honor Our LGBT Elders Day,
Sweeney told the Blade. It is so easy to get caught up in all the work of LGBTQ
equality and miss the chance to stop and think about all those who have worked
in the years before us.
Sweeney pointed out how LGBT elders paved the way for progress. Some of
our elders were at the forefront of the ght, and some quietly lived their truths,
sharing their identity with friends, families and coworkers, he said. Both of
these narratives have changed what life is like today, and we as a community
need to show our gratitude by making sure those who came before us can live
their truth in their elderhood.
Community activist Merrick Moses agreed. We have to celebrate our elders.
Unfortunately, many young people dont know the deep and rich history of
Baltimores LGBTQ communities. Our elders deserve honor, love and respect.
This celebration will occur every May 17.

The Baltimore City Police Community Collaboration Division and the Baltimore
City Police Commissioners LGBT Advisory Board have invited members of the
LGBT community to a meeting on June 1.
Sgt. Kevin Bailey, the LGBT liaison for the Baltimore Police Department who is
scheduled to attend, said the police want to have an open conversation with the
LGBT community and to discuss reporting crime. The advisory board also wants to
hear from the community. The last such gathering occurred nearly two years ago.
The meeting will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the community room of Chase
Brexton Health Care, 1111 N. Charles St.

TEL AVIV LGBT women ask for medical services less than straight women,
and when they do ask for such services they may well encounter a humiliating
attitude and lack of understanding on the part of medical sta, according to a
recent Israeli study on LGBT womens use of medical services, Haaretz reports.
Dr. Ruth Gophen conducted the study with her colleague Dr. Gal Wagner of
Tel Avivs Gan Meir Clinic.
In recent years research has been published around the world that shows
LGBT women request less medical services, but no such study had been
conducted in Israel until now, Haaretz quoted Gophen as having said. Our
study shows that although the awareness of the issue in Israel is growing and
improving, LGBT women may still encounter an insulting and hurtful attitude on
the part of the medical sta while receiving medical services.
These are some of the ndings of a study conducted of some 1,100 women,
in advance of the Talking About Health With Pride conference, which will be held
as part of the International Health Conference on Womens Health, being held
this week under the auspices of the Tel Aviv municipalitys Tel Aviv Pride Festival,
along with the Tel Aviv Municipal LGBT Community Center and Gan Meir Clinic,
Haaretz reports.
Some 1,100 women of all ages, including 582 LGBT women and 518 straight
women participated. The study showed that LGBT women request signicantly
fewer medical services, including checkups by gynecologists. Only 9 percent of
straight women have never been examined by a gynecologist, while the gure is
twice as high, 185, for LGBT women.
Partly as a result, LGBT women undergo fewer essential tests such as
mammography to diagnose breast cancer and Pap smears to nd cervical
cancer, compared to straight women. Half of bisexual women and 32 percent
of gay women have never had a Pap smear, compared to only 24 percent of
straight women. In addition, only 71 percent of bisexual women have a regular
family doctor, compared to 81 percent of straight women and 80 percent of gay
women, Haaretz reports.
The dierences do not end with just the frequency of medical tests and
checkups, but also point out an at times humiliating attitude toward the women
in the LGBT community. The study found that 15 percent of LGBT women who
requested medical services reported suering from an insulting attitude on
the part of the medical sta, and 17 percent of LGBT women reported they
encountered a lack of knowledge on the part of the medical sta concerning
their sexual orientation or identity, the Haaretz article notes.
A higher percentage of transgender women reported their doctors refused to
treat them or would only address them as men, the article said.

PrEP trial study underway in Australia

NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia A new PrEP trial study kicked o last week
in Australia to test pre-exposure prophylaxis for its eectiveness as an HIV
prevention measure, ABC News Australia and other outlets report.
The Expanded PrEP Implementation in Communities (EPIC-NSW) study aims
to increase understanding of the potential for PrEP to drive down new HIV
infections in the countrys New South Wales region.
More than 1,100 men in New South Wales have signed up to trial a new HIV
drug, which doctors have said may help dramatically decrease the number of
infections.
The Kirby Institutes trial, which aims to recruit 3,700 men, involves
participants taking PrEP. In 2014, 70 percent of HIV transmissions in Australia
occurred between men who had sex with other men, according to the Australian
Federation of AIDS Organizations, ABC reports.
PrEP is yet to be listed on the Pharmaceutical Benets Scheme but the
Therapeutic Goods Administration recently licensed one brand of the drug,
Truvada.
Professor Sharon Lewin of Melbournes Doherty Institute told ABC she hopes
the NSW trial will help the drug become more accessible to Australians.
The benets are absolutely huge, she told ABC News. In other countries,
particularly in the U.S., theyve demonstrated that as you introduce Truvada for
prevention theyve seen a dramatic reduction in new HIV infections. We still have
a thousand new HIV infections a year in Australia and we would be hoping to see
a dramatic decrease in that number.

like low fat, high ber, dairy free,
sugar free, organic, GMO free and
all natural, it can get confusing to gure out if something is really good for us or
if the companies are just trying to sell us the product.
Ive come up with a few rules to consider whenever buying healthy foods to
keep you on the nutritional straight and narrow.
Sugar ller: A general rule, whenever a food company highlights that their
brand is low in one thing, its probably high in another thing. Many foods that
are sold as low fat, low salt or low cholesterol also end up being low avor. Food
companies substitute that avor loss by increasing the grams of sugar in each
serving.
Some of the biggest culprits are granola bars and juices. Granola or oats can be
healthy, but many of the granola bars we nd packaged in the grocery stores have
been processed and pumped with as much as a days worth of sugar per serving.
Check out the nutrition facts on the back of the label to make sure your granola
bar has nine or less grams of sugar and does not have high fructose corn syrup. If
youre up for it, be brave and take a Sunday afternoon to make your own granola.
Youll learn how easy it is to make and youll know exactly whats in your food.

When it comes to juice, even when its 100 percent all natural, its basically
liquid diabetes in a bottle. Fruit juice without the ber that comes with the fruit
is pretty deadly. The ber that goes along with the fruit helps to keep the blood
sugar down, but when youre drinking straight juice, your body takes in way too
much sugar.
Also know that all natural only means that the food does not contain articial
colors, avors or synthetic substances. It doesnt mean that its organic,
unprocessed or even good for you. If youre a juice consumer, check out the
juice percentages on the bottle. Many juices contain less than 10 percent actual
juice and the rest is lled with sugar and additives. If youre craving juice, just eat
a piece of fruit.
Got milk?: I feel like every week I hear of more and more people who are
going diary free. Now dont get me wrong Im a big fan of limiting your cows
milk intake for a whole host of reasons (which I have written an entire previous
article on), but I do think we have to investigate all the nutrition facts of the

Good old days of

political disagreement
When neighbors could get

One warm morning in late August 1992,

I was walking down the narrow path from
our house to the street in our densely
populated little neighborhood in Ptown.
I heard my neighbor, a retired sherman
yell, Kitty! Hey Kitty! All the old Portuguese guys called me Kitty.
Peter trundled over to meet me at the
fence. He was in his daily uniform: an ancient blue Carhartt onesie, mesh AGWAY
cap and work boots. He was a bit out of
breath. He leaned on the fence. Did you
hear the ght last night? They were going at it. Cant believe you didnt hear it.
Calling each other en this and en that.
You en liar. Must have been those two
over there.
He pointed to a neighbors house. I

tried to picture them ghting one woman was the towns pay-per-view astrologer, the other a landscaper who planted
according to the lunar phases. I asked,
What time was the ght? He said, Oh,
had to be 10:30, 11.
And I realized who it was. It was the nal night of the Republican National Convention in Houston. A re-breathing Pat
Buchannan had kicked o the convention
with his Culture War speech, about the
gays and the peasants with the pitchforks
storming the castle. The party nominee,
George Bush, was wrapping up the meeting of the Bundestag with his acceptance
speech.

a day of each other and left their small

house to their son. Tom was always sweet
to us for being good neighbors to his parents. He kept an eye on our house when
we were on the road. Once when I got
back from a road trip at 2 a.m., I parked
the car and tiptoed by their open windows. I heard him in his room say to his
wife in her room, Kates home.
Chronic back pain from a serious accident
made him a night owl, a sports fan and political junkie. He was always watching some
Boston sports team or Fox News on TV. Despite his limitations, he managed to work in
his garden. Like his father, he grew gorgeous
lilies and outrageous vegetables.

I proposed an experiment to Tom. For the

summer I would watch only Fox News and
listen to Rush Limbaugh. He would watch
only MSNBC and listen to NPR.
Oh Peter it was us! We werent ghting. We were screaming at George Bush.
We had the windows open. Sorry.
Peter seemed to do his hat, I agree,
Dahlin, and waddled back to oiling his
lawn mower.
In 1998, Peter and his wife of 50 years,
a beloved seamstress in town, died within

We talked a lot over the fence. We

faux-fought about Boston and New York
teams. He was mostly open-minded
about the gays. To us anyway. We could
talk town and state politics but after several awkward tries, we steered clear of
national politics. Party politics were a notry zone.
In 2008, when John McCain announced
his running mate, Tom couldnt resist
coming over and gloating about Sarah
Palin. My dear partner did not share his
enthusiasm for Dan Quayle in a ponytail. They had words in the driveway. After a half-day cool-down, they apologized.
His peace oering was zucchini. Ours was
mint chutney.
But the truce bugged me. At the beginning of the next summer I proposed
an experiment to Tom. For the summer
I would watch only Fox News and listen
to Rush Limbaugh. He would watch only
MSNBC and listen to NPR. We would try
to keep open minds.
I dont think I suggested we build a re
pit so we could sit out on our lawn chairs,
talking late on autumnal evenings. I did
suggest he think it over and get back to
me. He didnt need to think it over. He
said that he didnt think he could physically do it. I detected a touch of regret. Or
I was projecting.
As this Memorial Day signals the beginning of summer, I realize those were the
good old days.

Army enters the 21st century

Fanning conrmation
highlights changing times

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

Last Sundays New York Times editorial

section was interesting. Reading has-been
columnist Maureen Dowd trash Hillary Clinton, maybe for the 100th time, letting her
apparent frustration and jealousy over Hillarys success show was trivial and annoying.
There was, however, an exciting and important editorial that was the real news of
the week in which history was made. The
Times only had half the story in an editorial headline most likely to embarrass them
in the future when they look back on it. It
read An Openly Gay Man Now Runs the
Army. Maybe one day soon the Times will
realize if they wanted to make a real point

the headline would have been: Most Qualied Man Conrmed to Run the Army and
then could have added Who Also Happens
to Be Gay.
It must be a dream of Eric Fannings one
day to be written about without the word
gay in front of his name as if it was actually
his rst name. One day they will simply write
Eric Fanning, brilliant and qualied Secretary
of the Army, was the rst man to serve in a
leadership capacity in three branches of the
military.
Eric has already had an illustrious career.
He was on the sta of the House Armed Services Committee and served in two positions
for the president, rst as a special assistant
in the Immediate Oce of the Secretary of
Defense and then as associate director of
political aairs in the White House.
His career has included working at the
Business Executives for National Security, a
D.C.-based think-tank and at Robinson, Lerer & Montgomery, a strategic communications rm in New York. At the Department
of Defense he served as deputy undersecretary and deputy chief management ocer
for the Department of the Navy and deputy
director of the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism.

President Obama nominated him and

he was conrmed as Under Secretary of
the Air Force in 2013. He then became Acting Secretary of the Air Force when Michael
Donley resigned, serving for six months. His
exemplary career continued and President
Obama nominated him to be Secretary of
the Army. On May 17, after eight months of
waiting, the Senate conrmed him.
One of his rst acts as secretary was to
participate in the West Point graduation
this past Saturday. I can only imagine what
went through his mind that day. According
to the New York Daily News, the speaker,
Vice President Joe Biden said, greater diversity, including more women and openly
gay soldiers, will strengthen the countrys
armed forces. Having men and women together in the battleeld is an incredible asset, particularly when theyre asked to lead
teams in parts of the world with fundamentally dierent expectations and norms.
They went on to report, More than 950
cadets received their degrees and commissions as second lieutenants. Among them
were the rst seven women to be commissioned into combat divisions since combat
restrictions for them were lifted. Then the
vice president in a salute to class president
Eugene E.J. Coleman who had come out

as gay said, Before the repeal of the militarys Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy in 2010,
E.J. would have been discharged from the
Army, and we would have lost an incredible talent. Thanks for your courage, E.J.,
and I expect were going to hear big things
from you, pal. So at West Point Saturday
morning Fanning saw one of his troops, the
newly minted second Lieutenant Coleman,
a young African-American gay man from
Virginia, lead his graduating class. Both
these men make our country and the LGBT
community proud.
But there was a downer this week that
shows us vigilance is still needed. The San
Diego Gay Mens Chorus was heckled o
stage and not allowed to sing at a San Diego
Padres baseball game. The team issued the
following apology: This evening during the
pre-game ceremony a mistake was made in
the Petco Park control room that prevented
the San Diego Gay Mens Chorus from performing the National Anthem as scheduled.
We apologize to anyone in the ball park who
this may have oended, and have reached
out to the chorus to express our deep regret
for the error.
Clearly they miss the point. They should
be apologizing to all Americans who should
be oended by what happened.

Party have also rallied to Hillarys side and
against Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Even though Bernie is the rightchoiceon
the issues as well as the politics. And on
that calculus the Blade has simply gotten it
quite wrong.
Bernie was long almost alone, rare
among national political gures in the
Democratic Party, who stood four-square
for LGBTQ rights, including marriage equal-

ity and of course an end to discrimination

inmilitaryrecruitment.And Hillary wasdilatory,dragging her feet, ever-cautious, never
aspirational, just apillar of the status quo.Becausethats who she is in her political DNA.
But for the Blades editorial to condemn
Sanders as a shrill voice on key issues
of inequality when it comes to wealth and
income, and political power that eyerolling charge is really a bit much. After all,
these issues are crucial, both to the future
ofthiscountry as well as to a Democratic Partythat is now so far down in the dumpselectorally that the last time its strength in the
U.S. House of Representatives wasthis low,
it was 1928, before the Great Depression
ofthe1930s.
But call me optimistic. There is a way forward to a new and powerful progressive majority, to takeback not only the U.S. Senate,
but also to take a big bite out ofthe apple of
winning back the House. That way forward
does not liethrough the too-cautious-by half,
Clinton-style triangulations of Hillarys smallbore incrementalism. It will spring instead
from afull-throated cry (not shrill, butcertainlysharp) for a new New Deal and a decent
society as Paul Goodmanusedto say.
The electoral map is spinning beneath our
feet, as Donald Trump (narcissistic, bullying,

yetentertaining no doubt, in a crude and racist and sexist way) now moves into a tie with
Hillary. Trump is beaten, however, by Bernie
whenever they are pairedhead tohead.
If Establishment Democratswere smarter
(they arent), they would recognizethat it will
indeed takesomething BIG to win this year,
both in ideas and in eorts. No, it wont be
easy, not in an era of SuperPACslikeHillarys
and the Citizens United decision on campaignspending rightsbythe rich to buy elections and rig conventions. But its a political
revolution that we need in 2016,something
thats happened before, with Andrew Jackson
in the 1820s, though few men even then, in
his now-distant era, were as racist as Jackson;
and ofcoursewith FDR in the 1930s, when
huge Democratic majorities in Congress,
elected on Roosevelts coat-tails, enacted
Social Security.Inotherwords, standing tall
instead of kneeling.
But whats so wrong with Hillary? So you
might ask, and the Blade appears to believe, that theanswer is very little. But I disagree. Let me count the ways.
She opposes a single-payer Medicare-forallhealthcare system, which Americaneeds,
and would cut costs, theway everyotheradvancednationdoes. She opposes freetuition
for public universities and colleges and op-

poses a national $15 minimum wage.

And we need to push ahead further for
card-check unionization and a full-court press
to end mass incarceration, thesystem of the
new Jim Crow enacted in great measure by
Bill Clinton, and Hillary as rst lady was hisenabler, and who only now seeks towash her
hands, to cleanse herself of guilt, in eect cryingaloud, Out, out damned spot!
Also, Hillarys personal negatives are
yuge, as The Donald would say, based on
way too many Clinton scandals.
Bernie should remain in the race all the
way through the California primary, where
he canpile up a large number of pledged delegates, and then comes the nal election, the
one we hold here in the District on June 14.
Thats exactly why Bernies supporterswill
ask for your votes on June 14. Only with a
large body of delegates pledged to Bernie,
not Hillary, will we stand a real chance of writing a progressive platform.
Yes, all sides must nally rally at the end
to support the eventual nominee, whoever
she will be.But until that time, the ght is on!
And thats where you come in. Jointhe political revolution we need, the one right here in
D.C. and feel the Bern!

Redskins protest demise is caution to gay activists

When distanced from those
they represent, the reaction
is reciprocal

A decades-long protest of the Washington Redskins team name quickly imploded last week. It also died quietly, with
most among the hipster thought-class of
local writers and bloggers allowing the
moment to pass unremarked.
Longtime mascot critic and Washington
Post columnist Robert McCartney was an
exception to the relative silence. The associate editor penned as opening line in
a published announcement he was dropping his editorial protest of the moniker,
Its humbling to admit it, but [Redskins
team owner] Dan Snyder wins.
Observers speculate that the public
demise of this once-trendy controversy
paves the way for the NFL franchise to
return to D.C. from a remote stadium in
suburban Maryland to its namesake city
free of local politicians fretting over it.
All without further maligning the team
owner or otherwise manufacturing opposition to the team name by making its
revision a condition for relocating to the
District.
The source of this game-changing development was the release of a Washington Post poll indicating that only nine
percent of Native Americans consider
the name oensive. This result mirrored

a similar 2004 national survey, revealing that more than a decade of outsized
complaint by dozens of Native American
organizations and group leaders had no
eect on opinion.
Barely a quarter of D.C.-area residents
thought the team name should change
in a most recent Post poll, even fewer
among all Americans in an ESPN national
poll. As one wag quipped, I think Washington is the pejorative term, not Redskins.
This clarity of reaction will likely also
doom the federal administrations legal
challenge to the team trademark, given the
inability to demonstrate that it is considered
a slur by a preponderance of either Native
Americans or the American public.

Previously no diligent, thorough and

comprehensive survey of Native American opinion on the matter had been
conducted, something that protesting
groups had been quick to point out. The
stark divergence between the attitudes of
advocates and those they claim to represent, however, is now clearly and readily
apparent.
All this, however, wont stop the clucking of tongues by those demanding that
political correctness necessitates the
purging of all things for which even a few
take exception. Credit the dual eects
of an all-too-prevalent person the barricades modern-day political dichotomy
toxically combined with a growing tendency to waste a lot of time staring at

the latest petty outrage of the moment.
This brave new world groupthink advocacy is further evidenced by all the safe
space, triggering and micro-aggression drivel prevalent at, and tolerated
on, too many college campuses and elsewhere. Cocoon construction is creeping
into the culture.
If this brouhaha seems familiar, it
should.
Gays and lesbians are having a difcult time transitioning from a unifying
history of estrangement to a diversied
culture of integration. LGBT activists have
a vested interest in keeping our collective
hand on a perceived panic button. A continuous high-alert code-red stance keeps
even diminished nancial contributions
owing.
At some point, though, professional
LGBT organization leaders and rebel
far-left fringe renegades run the risk of
falling prey to the same trick and trap
experienced by Native American group
leadership over the Redskins imbroglio.
There wont be many marching behind
the band, rainbow ag unfurled or not.
This is most obvious in the public
pleadings by some suggesting that being
gay, lesbian or transgender requires adherence to a strictly dened code of socalled progressive dogma and political
party fealty. We hear it in the intersectional struggle refrain bandied around
like a rod to be used to keep us in line
and inict cultural uniformity of opinion
on all matters.
Many may lament the loss of the camaraderie of a past outlaw status that easily
bred cohesive views commonly shared.
But being unable to accept that equality allows for a broader range of political
perspectives and personal concerns is
doomed to disappoint.
Its also a rejection of equality itself.

Our stories, our lives?

GLAAD REPORT FINDS DEARTH OF BLACK LGBT CHARACTERS ON NETWORK TV
By MARIAH COOPER
mcooper@washblade.com

GLAAD released its annual Where We

Are On TV report last fall and while LGBT
characters as a whole have increased, black
LGBT characters are still severely lacking.
Even without concrete statistical evidence,
ipping through major network channels
during prime time hours shows the lack of
queer black characters on television.
Ronald Matters, the gay blogger
behind pop culture blog RonaldMatters.
com, says his favorite show of all time is
LOGOs Noahs Arc, which aired in 2005.
It came out my freshman year of
college. My university didnt have LOGO
in the dorms at the time but I rushed to
iTunes every week and watched every
episode the very next day after it aired,
Matters says.
Noahs Arc followed the lives of four
gay black friends living in Los Angeles.
Despite being the networks highest-rated
original series at the time, the show was
cancelled after two seasons.
Since then, diversity has improved but
is still severely lacking. GLAAD reports that
71 percent of characters on cable shows
are white. Although 16 percent of regular
characters on broadcast programming
are black, the highest statistic yet for
the community, National Black Justice
Coalition External Aairs Manager Isaiah
Wilson says more work needs to be done.
It matters for a young person not
being able to see an example of who they
can be when they grow up. It matters
for so many times, especially for black
queer folks, we are never acknowledged,
Wilson says.
One of the biggest network shows to
star a gay black character is FOXs Empire
written by Lee Daniels. Jamal Lyon, played by
out actor Jussie Smollett, is a talented singer
and middle child in the tumultuous music
mogul Lyon family. While the character of
Jamal has a large amount of screen time,
his characters story arc focuses heavily on
his fractured relationship with his father
Lucious Lyon over his sexuality. While his
TV brothers storylines focus on topics like
mental illness and music industry rivalries,
Jamal can appear pigeonholed into being
simply a gay character.
Waddie G, gay pop culture blogger of
the G-List Society, enjoys Jamals character

JUSSIE SMOLLETT as Jamal on Empire.

but fears his tokenism will outshine his

importance on the show.
Lyons character could have been any
ethnicity, but seeing him be a black gay
male not being a victim intrigues me,
Waddie G says. There is a pressing issue
with having a universally received black
gay character like Jamal Lyon having
sexuality become the focal point of his
character rather than his strength and
talent. He will be mostly known as that
gay character in that show.
Black women are also dicult to nd
on TV. GLAAD reports only 59 of the 16
percent black characters are women.
Even harder to nd on broadcast
programming are queer black women,
but the rare representation is out there.
Freeform T.V. show The Fosters
features an interracial lesbian couple
raising a blended family of foster,
adopted and biological children. Lena
Adams Foster, played by Sherri Saum, is a
black lesbian on the show. However, her
screen time is signicantly less than her
partner Stef Adams Foster, played by Teri
Polo, who is white.
Annalise Keating, played by Viola Davis,
dropped a bombshell in the second season
of How to Get Away with Murder when it
was revealed she had been in a romantic
relationship with a woman. Executive
producer Shonda Rhimes has often been
credited for bringing black narratives to
the forefront of broadcast programming.
Transgender characters fare even

worse than other members in the LGBT

community on TV. GLAAD reports there are
no transgender characters on broadcast
television and only 2 percent on cable.
However, streaming services like
Netix and Hulu are much more diverse.
Shows like Orange is the New Black and
Sense8 feature black lesbian characters
that arent available in the same ways
on broadcast TV. GLAAD reports that
7 percent of transgender characters
are on streaming shows, with two lead
characters being trans. Also, the majority
are trans women with only one character
being a trans man. Black transgender
characters fair even worse with Orange
is the New Black being one of the few to
feature a black trans character like Sophia
Burset played by Laverne Cox.
Waddie G hopes that diversity can
increase across all platforms and go
beyond stereotypical archetypes.
Black lesbians are everywhere. They
are not hiding. Black lesbians are more
than just badass studs, irtatious femmes
and seasonal bisexuals, Waddie G
says. Not all black gay men date white
men. Not all black gay men wear heels
and dance like Beyonce. Not all black gay
men gossip as hangers-on with women.
Matters and Wilson believe the way
to end token, stereotypical black LGBT
characters is to have black LGBT writers
writing their own stories.
White writers dont know how to write
the black, gay lifestyle. They also dont

want to hire black, gay writers. I would

love to see a successful relationship
between men of color on television. We
need to see it to know that its possible for
us. Thats why I hope black, gay content
creators continue to create because
we need our spot at the studio writing
tables, Matters says.
Wilson notes last years Sony email leak
scandal, which revealed studio heads
making racially charged comments such
as saying black leads dont play well.
He says producers dont view black
characters as marketable in general,
especially black LGBT characters.
Its our white counterparts and
white producers who are pushing these
storylines, Wilson says. Im not going to
say that theyre racist, but their intentions
arent as authentic as if you were to
have a black person who is writing that
particular narrative. The lack of diversity
really does a disservice in making sure all
communities no matter the background
feel armed and feel like they are part of
the American lexicon of what it means to
dream and what it means to be accounted
and armed in this country.
With
the
diculty
of
getting
representation on broadcast channels and
streaming platforms, many black content
producers have taken to the internet with
their projects. Gay web series such as No
Shade and Drama Queenz and black
lesbian web series like Studville and
Between Women have gained popular
followings. Waddie G wonders why LOGO
hasnt picked up these shows to air in place
of reruns of Golden Girls, which he points
out are popular in the gay community but
have no gay characters.
Wilson says he thinks the way out of
this black LGBT diversity slump is to get
around executives who may not have
queer black characters and storylines at
their radars.
Even though there is still a lot of work
to do in mainstream popular culture to
get more television media to feature
our authentic narratives, we see a lot of
people of color not waiting on the studios
but thinking of innovative ways to get
our art out there beyond the traditional
media platforms, Wilson says.

One of the events shes most excited about is a screening of the 2015 lm

living rooms promoting literary arts excellence for women of color. Its part of

what would the title be?
The Adventures of Gladece

If science discovered a way

to change sexual orientation,
what would you do?

Nothing

What do you believe in

beyond the physical world?
The soul lives on forever.

Whats your advice for

LGBT movement leaders?
Dont allow someone else to create the
agenda for LGBT people.

What would you walk

across hot coals for?
Whatever is necessary to maintain my
integrity.

What LGBT stereotype

annoys you most?
Explicit gender roles in the bedroom,
although you dont see it as much on TV.
People often want to know whos top
and whos bottom and what role you
play.

Whats your favorite LGBT movie?

Better than Chocolate and Bound

Whats the most

overrated social custom?
Despite my dream wedding answer,
I feel the institution of marriage is

What trophy or prize

do you most covet?
Any trophy or prize that recognizes my
tireless eort toward my passions.

What do you wish youd known at 18?

That I could do and be anything,

LAUPER ON GOING COUNTRY, HER TOUR, DONALD TRUMP AND MORE

By MARIAH COOPER
mcooper@washblade.com
Pop anthems Girls Just Wanna
Have Fun and True Colors may have
skyrocketed Cyndi Lauper to the heights of
stardom, but the singer has been itching to
try her hand at a country album since the
days she spent playing music on the back
porch of her friends home in Nashville.
I never was an insider. I was an
outsider to Nashville and I kind of was
making outsider music compared to what
is done inside Nashville, Lauper says
during a phone interview. When I was
singing this record I did think, Wow, why
didnt I do this before? but I guess I was
too busy chasing something else. You get
on that hamster wheel and you think,
You gotta, you gotta, you gotta, and once
you get o, you realize you just gotta do
what you want.
Detour, Laupers 11th studio album,

is a collection of classic country songs

dating back to the 40s from country
greats like Patsy Cline, Wanda Jackson
and George Jones. Recorded in Nashville,
Detour features songs Lauper says she
could relate to and believe. She brings her
tour to Wolf Trap on Wednesday, June 1
where shell co-headline with Boy George.
You dont want to just do a song, you
want to connect, Lauper says.
The connection went beyond the
62-year-old singer and her music, to the
many collaborators she worked with on the
record including Jewel and Willie Nelson.
Jewel lent her yodeling vocals to
the track I Want To Be a Cowboys
Sweetheart after Laupers attempts to
quickly learn how to yodel came up short.
We looked for people to yodel and then
it seems like its not really that popular, so

I nally realized that Jewel yodeled and she

might be living in Nashville. I texted Jewel
and said, This is Cyndi Lauper, is this Jewel?
And if this isnt, then just ignore it as another
crazy text. One thing led to another and we
asked Jewel to yodel on the song.
Lauper says she had to work to stay
professional while recording Night Life
with Nelson because the experience was
so surreal for her.
It almost made me feel like I was in
Bikini Bottom like in SpongeBob Land just
oating in the water because it just was
so magical, Lauper says.
She promises to sing both new and
old music in her show, but notes that
even though Detour is her latest album
release, its still old stu and closely tied
to pop music. Lauper says she remembers
Cline and Loretta Lynn being on the radio

when she was a child the same way pop

songs are today.
She also says the album is not as much
of a stretch from her last project 2010s
blues album Memphis Blues as it
might initially seem.
I thought the country one was going to
be really hard, but once I found myself in
it, I was OK. I think that all of it is the roots
of the music I play. Its a singers record. Of
course I want to sing and I want to sing the
roots of what popular music is because I
love music. I really love music, Lauper says.
Shes working on another musical,
but declined to go into detail for fear of
jinxing it. Shes hot o a 2013 Tony win
for the hit musical Kinky Boots.

There are certain neighborhoods in

D.C. that remind us of a time when people
used to travel up Connecticut Avenue
in the summertime in search of cooler
temperatures and a slower pace of life,
and Cleveland Park is one of those places.
While its odd to think that a
neighborhood so close to downtown could
have once been viewed as a vacation spot,
Cleveland Parks shady tree-lined streets,
Queen Anne-style detached homes and
two-block commercial district manage to
give it a certain small-town atmosphere,
making it a pleasant option when youre
looking to escape the crowds along 14th
Street or Barracks Row.
While Cleveland Park has fewer
restaurants than other parts of the city,
youll nd that quality trumps quantity
when you sit down for a meal. With
the Uptown Theater showing the latest
cinematic blockbusters within steps of
many of the restaurants, youll nd menus
that are designed to feed you either before
or after youve been to the movies, or you
can choose to have a leisurely dinner while
watching the local kids race by on their
scooters on a warm summer evening.
For many, the rst choice for a bite in
Cleveland Park is Vace (3315 Connecticut
Ave., N.W.; vaceitaliandeli.com), which is
little more than a take-out Italian market
but boasts some of the citys best pizza.
Plan a day trip to the neighborhood by
taking the Metro (if, of course, its actually
running) to Cleveland Park, then grab a slice
of the herbaceous white pizza with onions
to munch while walking to the National Zoo
for an afternoon of communing with the
pandas and elephants.
When youve said goodbye to Bei Bei,
itll be the perfect time to head back to
Cleveland Park for the pre-theater menu
at Ardeo + Bardeo (3311 Connecticut
Ave., N.W.; ardeobardeo.com). Chef Kelly
Bunkers seasonal two-course menu for
$29 reects his background in French
cuisine he was most recently executive
sous chef at Le Diplomate such as a
refreshing spring pea soup dolloped with
a tangy creme fraiche and crispy pancetta,
or the delicately pued Parisian gnocchi

accented with garlicky ramps and oven

dried tomatoes. And, if you didnt stop at
Vace for a slice, Ardeo + Bardeos atbread
loaded with spring vegetables and squash
blossoms is bright and satisfying.
For a late-night nosh, you can do no
better than Ripple (3417 Connecticut Ave.,
N.W.; rippledc.com). Led by chef Marjorie
Meek-Bradley, who recently nished in the
nal four contestants on season 13 of Top
Chef, the restaurant focuses on highly
seasonal ingredients, like its neighbor
Ardeo + Bardeo down the block, making
for an ever-changing menu. Our favorite
option is the Grilled Cheese Bar, oered
only at the bar either from 5-6:30 p.m. or
in the last hour or two before closing (check
the website for specic times). This is not
your mamas grilled cheese; stand-outs
include the Rich e Rich, made with true
butter; mushroom duxelle and chevre;
and the Ripple Reuben, a Dagwoodesque layering of housemade pastrami,
sauerkraut, comt, and Thousand Island
dressing that gives us a peek into MeekBradleys pastrami-focused Smoked &
Stacked fast-casual slated to open in Shaw
later this year.
However, if you want to kick back and
relish your evening, set your sights on
Indique (3512-14 Connecticut Ave., N.W.;
indique.com), which has been bringing
modern Indian cuisine to Cleveland Park
for nearly 15 years. The recently renovated
space is bright, airy and colorful, so its
just as nice indoors if you cant snag a
sidewalk table, although its always worth
trying to get a table for two on the second
oor balcony. Executive chef K.N. Vinods
hometown in Kerala located on the
Arabian Sea in southwestern India is
reected on the menu with a variety of
tropically inspired dishes with a Western
twist, from the sh curry, bright with
Malabar tamarind, to the shepherds pie
loaded with protein-of-the-moment lamb
and spiced shallot potatoes.
Be sure to sample Indiques new cocktail
menu while youre at it; designed by Carlie
Steiner of Stir Bartending Co., the spiced
house-made tonics elevate traditional G
and Ts, while clever touches of toasted
mustard seed with tequila and fresh curry
leaf with rum provide a decidedly Indian
edge to traditional cocktails.

Youve never been so mad in your life.

Boy, you were angry. Ready to scream,
spit nails, tear the world apart with bare
hands. So mad you couldnt see straight,
as they say, and youre still seething. As
in the new book All the Rage: A Quest
by Martin Moran, would the trespass
against you ever be forgivable?
It was unimaginably dicult to make
that last call, even though there had been
other calls over the years.
Martin Moran had to make sure that
someone was monitoring the man whod
molested him decades before. Bob was
elderly by now, but Moran knew that Bob
wasnt rehabilitated if such a thing
could even happen. He was relieved to
know that California authorities had Bob
on a registry.
In another memoir, in another time,
hed written about Bob pseudonymously.
He didnt want to cause trouble then, for
himself or anyone else, but the memory
of what happened when he was 12 still,
of course, lingered. Hed waited 30 years,
after all, to nally call the cops.
And yet, he didnt hate Bob. His
stepmother, yes, but not Bob. And he didnt
think he was angry about the whole thing.
No, what irked him most was when people
asked him if he was angry. He had a life
to live, a career as a writer and actor; he

lectured, traveled, explored, loved his family

and his partner. Who had time for anger?
Who had time for forgiveness?
That was something Moran wrestled
with. He worked as an interpreter for a
man who was seeking asylum in the U.S.,
and the horrors the man endured were
nearly unbearable. He seemed to forgive
those who hurt him. An old friend whod
been molested was able to forgive, too.
In fact, he almost seemed to think that
Bob was a nice guy. Could anybody ever
think of Hitler or Stalin as a human being
worthy of grace? Or was justice needed
before we can truly forgive?
If a book, a non-sentient item made
from dead trees, could have feelings, All
the Rage would throb with aching.
Author Martin Moran indicates in this
memoir that he no longer feels compelled
to be coy with his molesters name, so he
specically identies the catalyst for this
journey. That up-front-ness immediately
feels squirmy, in part because everythings
suddenly more personal, and in part
because Moran already seems oddly blas
toward Bob, who nonetheless is a 10-foottall, constant presence in this story.
All that happens in the rst pages. Because
of the unsettling feeling were left with then,
what comes next, and for the rest of the
book losses, bewildering arguments, nal
words exchanged with a friend, and yes, a
blazing realization of hatred becomes
compellingly soul-washing, not only for
writer, but for reader, too.
Though theres plenty of rawness here
both in feeling and in word this
meditation on justice, compassion and
mercy is something we all need at some
point, so nd All the Rage. If you miss it,
you may never forgive yourself.

CYNDI LAUPER says her new country album is not as much of a departure as it might initially seem.

for music goes beyond her own bubble

of creativity. Lauper admits she keeps up
with popular music today, specically hiphop and pop, and even incorporates new
genres like the beach-psychedelic sound
coming out of northern California on her
song Funnel of Love on the album. She
also takes time to check out international
music charts to stay up to date on what
people are listening to.
Because I dont think you should sing
at people, I think you should listen back,
Lauper says.
As a long-time supporter of the LGBT
community, listening is a skill Lauper,
who aectionately calls herself a friend
and family member of the community,
has taken to heart in her personal life and
social activism endeavors. She cites her
sister Ellen, a lesbian, as a big part of why
she is involved in LGBT activism.
I grew up watching my sister struggle
in times when it wasnt so popular, in dark
times. Its started to get dark again a little
bit, Lauper says. But I think you gotta
be who you gotta be, you know? And
celebrate your life triumphantly kind of
like Kinky Boots. I think my fans from the
community are like my friends and family.
Sometimes I used to work the clubs late
at night, especially in the 90s, because
I just needed relief from the straight
world. I dont know where I t. But I dont
care, because I think everyone should be
treated the same and your preference is
your preference.
While some musicians like Pearl Jam,
Bruce Springsteen and Ringo Starr chose
to protest North Carolinas HB2 law, which
prevents transgender individuals from using
the bathroom corresponding to the gender
with which they identify, by canceling their

scheduled concerts in the state, Lauper

opted for a dierent approach.
Lauper will continue with her June 4
performance in Raleigh, N.C., and will
donate all proceeds from the concert to
Equality North Carolina. She says there
has always been a unisex bathroom in
the studios where she has recorded and
nobody gave a hoot.
Fear is fear. And education is the way.
Educate people on the facts and how to
protect their civil rights; that theres all
kinds of people in the world and room
for all of us. I lived through the civil rights
period, Im still living through the womens
rights period, because obviously all our
rights are being stripped, one by one,
Lauper says. So I felt that we could go
down to North Carolina and teach people
how to help themselves and each other and
also at the venue where we were playing
we insisted on a transgender bathroom.
Thats going to be there forever.
Lauper says she had to speak out.
I cant speak for anyone else. Im a
friend and family member so where I
come from, you dont allow somebody
else to hurt your friend or family
member. You dont allow people to
strip other peoples civil rights, Lauper
says. In America, everyone is a freaking
immigrant. Everyone, including Donald
Trump. Unless he has some Native
American action going on. They can try to
change the facts and try to rewrite history
and try to lie through their teeth, but they
cant shove that down my throat. Because
I dont have amnesia.

Myths of estate planning

Now that were married,
we dont need wills
By LAWRENCE S. JACOBS
This is the third in a series of seven articles to help you understand what you do
know, dont know and should know about
estate planning.
The myth that marriage wipes out the
need for wills and powers of attorney is
the one that I hear the most often. And
I cringe every time because it is patently
false. My standard retort is, So you think
married opposite-sex couples have been
signing wills for centuries and powers of
attorney for decades just for the fun of
it? Of course marriage brings many rights
and protections, but there are three big
holes in this thinking.
1. You need a will because if one of you
dies, the other may not inherit everything.
The state in which you live (or the District)
has laws to ensure that a surviving spouse
will inherit something, but there are a variety of circumstances in which that amount
can be less than 100 percent if there isnt
a will. Does your spouse have children?
Are your spouses parents still alive? If the
answer is yes to either question, you will
not inherit 100 percent of your deceased
spouses assets. In Virginia, the surviving
spouse may only receive one-third of the
assets if there are children from a prior

relationship. And while were talking about

children, its also important to understand
that minors cannot inherit anything directly. If money is left to them when they are
under 18, a court-appointed guardian will
be required to take control of those assets.
Then, regardless of how much money may
be involved, the children will get it all on
the day they turn 18. Of course, a properly
drafted will can prevent these problems.
2. Although this is difficult to think about,
being married only provides protections if
your spouse is alive at the time you die. If
he or she is not, and you die without a will,
the fact that you were previously married
becomes irrelevant. You will be treated as
though you were single. In that event, various family members will inherit all of your
assets, whether you are close to them or
estranged, whether they need those assets or not, and regardless of whether
you had other plans. Ive seen situations in
which couples spent a lifetime accumulating valuable artwork and antiques along
with significant amounts of money all of
which went to distant relatives, rather
than to the persons or organizations that
the couple actually cared about.
3. All couples need powers of attorney,
married or not. Sure, even if you dont
have a medical power of attorney, your
spouse will be able to make medical decisions for you. But what if they cant? A
good medical power of attorney will grant
the same rights to other trusted people

A marriage certificate is not a free pass. You still need well-constructed wills and powers of
attorney.

if your spouse cannot take care of you.

Whats more, if you become incapacitated, there will be hundreds of other necessary decisions that have nothing to do
with medical care. Thats where a financial
power of attorney comes in. For instance,
nobody gets the right to access your
solely owned assets automatically, even
a spouse. Who will pay the bills, manage
your money, take care of your home, and
take care of your spouse? This power of
attorney grants important, broad rights
to your spouse and perhaps other people
that you trust to manage all of your assets when you cannot.

So remember: a marriage certificate is

not a free pass. You still need well-constructed wills and powers of attorney to
make sure things work just the way you
want them to.
