Queries dealt by the Speaker

Q: As students what should we do to get the job in a top consulting firm?
A: At this juncture, work over your soft skills and try to be in touch with your dream company
somehow and try to learn about it more and more.
Q: Can the skills for a career in management consulting be developed or are they in built?
A: These skills can be developed over a period of time but before that a person should be very
well convinced that he has to go in management consulting and he should develop a taste for it.
Q: Is it easy to switch from operational consulting to strategic consulting?
A: Yes but depends. During the early years, you might like to switch as you are exploring your
options. But after working for 10 years in a particular industry, it might not be a good idea to
switch from operational to consulting.
Q: Is an MBA necessary for career in management consulting?
A: No. But doing an MBA does help in terms of gaining an overall knowledge of business
functions and the kind of problems a firm faces while operating in business environment.
Q: How different is the job of a Management Consultant to that of an Investment Banker?
A: They are both same in terms of time at the job and the money they offer. Rest all is different.
Q: Before recession came, students used to go to US while taking good amount of loan. But After
recession students are finding it tough to get a decent job that can also fund their loan. As a
result fewer students are going to US now. In this downturn, are the foreign B-Schools willing to
cut the fees they take?
A: As of now, I don’t see any major reduction in the fees as that will result in dilution of brand
image. But in future, US B-schools might not increase their fees for a long time as they have a lot
of funds.
