Philosophy of the Cognitive and Biological Sciences

My dissertation research is a philosophical investigation of the National Institute of
Mental Health's Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) and its implications for psychiatric
theory and practice. The RDoC, a new classification matrix of basic psychological
capacities that lend themselves for explanation by relevant biological mechanisms,
proposes to provide a framework for conducting mental health research in terms of
fundamental brain circuit-based behavioral dimensions that cut across traditional
diagnostic categories. As a result, mental disorders such as schizophrenia and
depression are explicitly characterized as biological disorders involving brain circuits
that implicate specific domains of cognition, emotion, and behavior, i.e., as brain
disorders.
My research explicates several key issues with the RDoCs reductive characterization of
mental disorders as brain disorders, and in doing so, connects them to longstanding
issues in the philosophy of the cognitive and biological sciences, including:
1. How can we develop causal explanations of mental disorders?
2. Is integration across levels of mechanistic explanations possible?
3. What is the role of animal models in terms of studying mental disorders?
4. Can diagnostic kinds be used to address ethical issues?
5. Is psychopathology embodied, embedded, enacted, and/or extended?
