LENS MOUNT
ADJUSTING IMAGE AFTER REPLACING THE LENS STAGE

Outline
Notification is made here of how to perform adjustment if for the reason of problem with the lens a lens
stage has been replaced, and then after this replacement the lens fails to yield good resolution.
Lens stage replacement procedure (refer to the Service Manual)
1) Disconnect the plug and remove the copyboard glass and lens hood.
2) Move the mirror 1 mount to the right and remove the stage wire fixture (1 in Figure 1; 2 locations).
3) Remove the lens stage cable (2 in Figure 1, Figure 2 enlargement; connector, ground wire).
After replacing the lens stage, attach the cable following the same path as before so that the movement of
the lens stage is not affected.)
4) Move the mirror 1 mount to the left direction.
5) Remove the light blocking curtain (3 in Figure 1; 2 locations)
The light blocking curtain is pasted to the lens with two-sided tape; be careful when peeling off the light
blocking curtain so as to avoid tearing it (enlarged Figure 3). After replacing the lens stage, re-attach it
with a two-sided tape.
6) Remove the sheet guide (1) (4 in Figure 1).
Sheet guide (1) is also attached to the new lens stage but since the light blocking sheet needs to be pasted
again, it is advisable to reuse the removed sheet guide.
7) Lift the left side of the lens stage and remove the bushing (5 in Figure 1) from the rail (2 locations).
8) After replacing the lens stage with a new one, attach the removed parts.

Adjustment for obtaining good resolution

1) Set the lens position for DIRECT copying (power ON position).
2) Turn the power OFF and unplug the cord.
3) Remove the copyboard glass and lens cover.
4) Insert a jeweler's screwdriver (diameter: 2 mm) or hex wrench (1.5 mm) into the side hole of the lens
(diameter: 2 mm). At this time, the tip of the screwdriver must go through the oval hole on the cam plate
located under the side hole. (See Figures 4 and 5.)

7) After attaching the removed parts, turn the power switch ON and check the image for DIRECT copying.
If good resolution is not obtained, repeat Steps 1 to 6 again. When good resolution is obtained, bond lock
the cam plate fixing screw.

6251-001
8) Check enlarged and reduced images
If enlarged or reduced images show that the lens fails to yield good resolution, loosen the image
enlargement (or reduction) lens rail fixing screw and bend the rail to either one of Y direction and tighten
the fixing screw. (See Figure 9.)
Check images again and if the lens still fails to yield good resolution, bend the rail in the opposite
direction.
When good resolution is obtained, bond lock the lens rail fixing screw.

Item

Description

Changing a message

In previous versions, the message upon recovery from an interrupt made

during RDF copying mode reads: "Start with the first page original."
Since there is no need for starting with the first page original, the message
has been changed to read: "Press the Start key."

Changing the specifications Previous versions do not accept a number higher than the limit in the
as to the limit in the
number of copies that can be requested. (The limit is set using COPY_LIM
number of copies requested in service mode *5*.)
Version 7 accepts such an input, but displays an alarm message in response
to a press on the Copy key, prompting the user to enter an appropriate
number for the number of copies to request.

Changing the method of

counting two-sided copies

The method of counting two-sided copies for the Copy Data Controller-A1
has been changed so that the total copy count is the result of "one-sided
copy count+two-sided copy count 2."

Changing the sequence of

handling manually fed
sheets

Previous versions compute the length of the first sheet (manually fed freesize paper), and uses the result to control the second and subsequent
copies.
Version 7 uses the same sequence used to control the first copy for the
second and subsequent copies to control copying operation.

Adding cleaning mode to

service mode

A new mode (wire cleaning mode) has been added as WIRE_CLN to

service mode *4*. In the mode, all corona wires are cleaned simultaneously
and five times in sequence (3 min).

Changing the specifications The specifications used to control the LED of the side deck have been
for the side deck unit LED changed so that
LED ON:

LED OFF:
Deck closed and lifter motor off
(The LED is also off while the lifter motor is on during
copying operation.)
LED blinking:

Increasing the effective

By way of preventing cracks in the LCD on the control panel, the area of
area of buttons on the LCD buttons within which a press is recognized has been increased:
"Reduce/Direct/Enlarge, Paper Select" on the standard screen (part of
Extended Functions mode) and "Close" on the Extended Functions Mode
screen.

Changing the notation of

Direct (100%) key

In previous versions, the notation used to represent 100% copying is

"DIRECT."
In version 8, the English ROM and Inch-configuration combination uses
the notation "DIRECT," while the English ROM and A-, AB-, or AB/Inchconfiguration combination uses the notation "1:1."
Other combinations use their appropriate language notations.

Complying with Energy

Star Tire2

The following changes have been made to comply with the requirements of
Energy Star Tire2:
1) Default mode is now "from one-sided original to one-sided copy"
instead of "from one-sided original to two-sided copy."
However, default mode for Inch-configuration remains the same as
"from one-sided original to two-sided copy." The notation 2SIDE_SL in
service mode *5* is disabled and dimmed.
2) New function which enables a switch-over to low-power consumption
mode has been added.
If no operation is initiated for a specific period of time after the end of a
job or a key operation, a switch-over is automatically made to lowpower consumption mode. An item has been added to user mode timer
settings to enable changing of the time after which a switch-over is
made to low-power consumption mode.
The time may be set between 10 min and 4 hr; in 5-min increments
between 10 and 20 min; in 10-min increments between 30 and 50 min;
in 30-min increments between 1 and 2 hr; 3 or 4 hr thereafter. Initially,
the time is set to 15 min.
3) Changing the auto-power off time settings.
The range of time that may be set is now "between 10 min and 4 hr"
instead of "10 min and 24 hr."
The time may be set in 5-min increments between 10 and 20 min; in 10min increments between 30 and 50 min; and in 30-min increments
between 1 and 2 hr; and 3 or 4 hr between 3 and 4 hr.

Description
So that models not designed for Energy Start Tire2 may also use the
updated ROM (Ver. 7), a DIP SW has been added to the DC controller
PCB to enable selection of Energy Star Tire2 compliance or noncompliance. (See the diagram below.)
For this reason, it is important to find out whether or not the model is
designed for Energy Start Tire2 before replacing the DC controller PCB.
The use of an updated ROM on a DC controller PCB of previous version
will not update the machine to accommodate Energy Star Tire2.

Item

Description

Correcting the weekly

timer function

In previous versions, the weekly timer function fails on the ID Input screen
used to make ID mode settings. The contributing factor for the problem
has been removed.

Correcting the cover mode In previous versions, the machine picks up paper from a cassette not
function
containing the cover pages, stops the paper at the registration roller, and
resets itself under the following sequential conditions:
Cover mode is selected.
The selected cassette runs out of cover pages.
The selected cassette is replenished with cover pages.
The Copy start key is pressed.

Correcting RDF
malfunction

Previous versions fail to deliver an original remaining on the copyboard

glass to the RDF tray if a jam occurs during the delivery of the last copy to
the sorter.

Correcting image faults

Image faults (dirty image) occur on images on the backs of copies made on
paper larger than the originals in "two-sided original to two-sided copy"
and "punched hole erase" modes.

Correcting problem
encountered in use of ID
number

In the situation of using the copier machine with the Copy Data ControllerA1 with its own power supply independent from the one for the copier, the
Controller retains the ID number inputted previously even after the power
for the machine main body is cut off. When the machine main body is
turned on again, a new ID number is not accepted since the Copy Data
Controller-A1 determines that an ID number acceptance has been already
made. This problem has been corrected.

Correcting a message

The jam icon appearing in front of the message "Insert Control Card" has
been removed.

Correcting a bug

If the Start key is pressed for a single original in "from one-sided original to
two-sided copy" mode using the RDF, the machine indicates the message
"Place Two or More Originals," and stops while issuing an alarm.
In response, if the Reset key is pressed or the original is removed and then
placed and the number of copies requested is changed, the motor will start
and continue to rotate for 50 sec without copying when the Start key is
pressed.
The software has been revised to correct the problem.

Correcting the message

display mechanism

Previous versions indicate the message "Remove Paper from Feeder" in

response to suspension of operation caused by an overstacking condition in
"feeder manual feed +non-sort stack" mode.
Since no paper is actually delivered to the feeder, the software is revised to
prevent the indication of this message. (The message, however, will be
indicated if the feeder is opened and then closed after suspension of
operation caused by an overstacking condition.)

Correcting the machine

stoppage mechanism

In case of a machine stoppage because of the absence of toner in "feeder

manual" mode, previous versions indicate the message "Press Start Key"
when the machine is replenished with toner. But the key pressing operation
is disabled because the original has been delivered. And the machine does
not initiate auto-start even when an original is set in the feeder manual feed
slot. This problem of inhibiting the continuation of the ongoing job has
been corrected.

Description

Accommodating new
stapler sorter models

The software has been revised to enable the use of the Stapler SorterE3/J1/K1. The new models are capable of holding 50 (instead of 25) sheets
of large size paper, and the software has been duly revised to accommodate
the increase. (Ver. 7 puts the limit to 50 when operations involve the use of
a new model.)

: Whenever replacing the EPROM or the DC controller PCB, be sure to disconnect the power plug from
the outlet before servicing the machine.

HEATER LAMP/CANON GIESSEN MADE MACHINE

There are discrepancies between the configuration of the Canon Giessen made machine and the
documentation in the Parts Catalog. Since the specifications of the Canon Giessen made machine to
comply with the radio interference controls were not determined in time for the initial edition of the Parts
Catalog, inclusion of the information from that edition was not possible.
From the first mass production machine of the Canon Giessen made 220V/240V machines, two
heaters have been installed to comply with the flicker and harmonic controls which are part of the radio
interference controls.
The major differences in part numbers between the Parts Catalog and the Canon Giessen made
220/240V machine are listed in the table below.

HOLDING TRAY ASSEMBLY

Subject

WRAPPING OF COPY PAPER AROUND TRANSFER/SEPARATION CORONA ASSEMBLY

Reason

When a jam occurs in the holding tray assembly, the paper can at times get trapped along the joint of
the transfer/separation corona assembly. To prevent this problem, a guide has been added to the center
of the holding tray assembly (along its longer side).

Details

<Phenomenon>
A jam occurs in the holding tray assembly. When the paper gets trapped along the joint of the
transfer/separation corona assembly and copying is continued, leakage can lead to a serious quality
problem.
<Cause>
When making a double-sided copy, a jam is likely to occur if a sheet stacked on the holding tray
assembly curls greatly. When the fixing/feeding unit is slid out/in in this condition, the base plate of
the unit can hook the curled paper, causing the paper to get trapped along the joint between the
transfer/separation corona assembly and the main frame.
<Factory measure>
An upper guide is added to the holding tray assembly. (See Figure 1.)

Servicing

: If the machine does not have an upper guide on its holding tray assembly, be sure to install the holding
tray upper guide unit as follows. (The upper guide unit contains the parts shown in the table below.)

PHOTOSENSITIVE DRUM ASSEMBLY

Subject

MEASURES TO TAKE WHEN BLURRED IMAGES OCCUR

Reason

Notification is made here of the measures to take when blurred images caused by the photosensitive
drum occur.

Details

<Phenomenon>
Blurred images caused by the photosensitive drum may occur over time (smeared images: screen dot
reproduction faults, text sharpness faults).
<Cause>
Resistance is lowered due to moisture in the air for the film (on the drum surface) made by chemical
bonding of discharged materials to the organic matters in the toner ingredients. The lowered resistance
causes the charge on the drum surface to shift sideways with the consequence of smearing and
blurring of images.

Servicing

: If any of the following symptoms caused by the photosensitive drum occur in the field, use the drumcleaning powder (CK-0429) and follow the cleaning procedure described below. Also, when replacing
the cleaning blade (standard for periodical replacement is 500,000 copies), check the image; in case of
the similar symptoms, perform the drum cleaning by following the same procedure.
<Symptoms>
Vertical band unevenness on half tones and screen dot images with a corresponding unevenness on
the photosensitive drum.
Blurred images conceivably attributed to the photosensitive drum (because no other abnormality
can be found).

-1/2-

6251-009

<Cleaning procedure>
1) Take the photosensitive drum from the process unit. (For instructions, see the Service Manual.)
2) Pour 0.2 to 03 g of drum cleaning powder (CK-0429) on lint-free paper, and moisten the lint-free
paper with 5 to 10 cc of alcohol.
3) While forcing the lint-free paper against the surface of the photosensitive drum, move it back and
forth in the drum axial direction as if to wipe its surface. (At this time, keep the width of the
strokes to 5 to 10 cm in the peripheral direction of the drum, and move back and forth the lint-fee
paper about 15 to 20 times.)
4) When the alcohol has evaporated, dry wipe the surface of the photosensitive drum with new lintfree paper.
If the surface is still uneven, go back to step 3). (Increase the strokes as necessary.)
5) Rotate the drum over (5 to 10 cm), and repeat steps 2) to 4). Repeat until the entire surface of the
drum has been covered.
<Notes for servicing>
Adhered foreign matters cannot be removed just with solvent (alcohol); always be sure to use
cleaning powder (CK-0429).
Clean the photosensitive drum before replacing the cleaning blade.
Evenly wipe from the front side end of the photosensitive drum to the rear side end.
When performing Step 3, if there is too much drum cleaning powder or much of the alcohol has
evaporated, add more alcohol to the lint free paper. If it seems there is not enough drum-cleaning
powder, add to the lint free paper as required.
After dry wiping the drum, be sure to check that no drum cleaning powder remains on the drum.

IMPROVING SAFETY

Reason

A protective sheet will be attached to the upper left stay so as to prevent intrusion of conducting
objects (metal chain, etc.) through the gap between the vertical size plate and the control panel.

Details

<Symptoms>
If a conducting object (e.g., chain or slender objets) drops through the gap between the vertical size
plate and the control panel, it can come into contact with the electrode of the scanning lamp.
<Cause>
A spacer was added under the vertical size plate to accommodate the change of the thickness of the
copyboard glass from 3 to 4 mm. As a result, the gap between the vertical size plate and the control
panel has increased to allow intrusion of objects. The problem in question is not relevant to machines
with a 3-mm glass sheet.
<Factory measure>
A protective sheet will be attached to the upper let stay. (See Figure 1.)

-1/3-

6251-010

Servicing

: If a protective sheet is not found in the upper left stay of the machine (i.e., if the machine's copyboard
glass is 4 mm in thickness), be sure to attach the protective sheet (FY1-1174) prepared for the field as
indicated in Figure 2.
The field use protective sheet (FY1-1174) is intended as a one-time measure, and will not be assigned
as a service part. In the near future, be sure to use the new protective sheet (FB4-9953; see Figure 1 for
its location).
If you have removed the control panel of a machine which was provided with a field use protective
sheet, make sure that the field use protective sheet is under the control panel.
Attaching the Field Use Protective Sheet
1. Remove the vertical size plate and the left stay cover.
2. Insert the protective sheet between the upper left stay and the control panel, and attach it to the
upper left stay according to the reference points indicated in Figure 2.
3. Mount the left stay cover and the vertical size plate.

information on preventing jams at the holding tray assembly, see Service Bulletin 6251-008 Rev. 2.

Details

A microswitch for jam paper detection has been installed near the main unit side contact section (main
drive assembly) of the transfer/separation corona assembly. This microswitch displays error code
E013* upon detecting jammed papers.
*: E013 code originally served the purpose of detecting waste toner feedscrew error. Now, this code is
also used to detect paper jams.

Servicing

: The position and installation procedure for the paper jam detection mechanism are shown below.
<Installation position>
Remove the transfer assembly high voltage connector (FH2-9164-000) at the rear of the high voltage
transformer PCB assembly and install the new part at this position. (See Fig. 1.)

SOILING OF LENS AND IMPROVEMENT TO FACILITATE REPLACEMENT OF AIR FILTER

Reason

Air filter has been changed to prevent poor image from soiling of the lens. And along with this
change, the shape of the inner cover (left) has been changed to facilitate replacing the air filter in the
field.

Details

<Symptom>
Light image
<Cause>
If the machine is located in a place where there is a lot of dust, the dust collects inside the lens unit,
and a large amount adheres to the lens surface. As a result of this, the amount of light from the original
illumination lamp increases to result in a light image.
<Factory measure>
To reduce the amount of dust inside the machine, the air filter has been changed. Also, the shape of
the inner cover (left) has been changed to make possible replacing the air filter without the need to
remove the inner cover (left).

-1/3-

CASSETTE

Subject

CORRECTING PROBLEMS WITH CASSETTE AND IMPROVING EASE OF ITS USE

Reason

Measures have been taken to prevent damage to the handle latch, damage to the release arm, and
displacement of the spring for the tab of the latch and to prevent wrong setting of the paper width.

Details

<Symptom>
1. The cassette is not locked when it is closed (possibly damaging the handle latch).
2. The cassette is not locked when it is closed (possibly damaging the release arm).
3. The torsion spring used in enabling to push the tab on the front side size plate becomes displaced.
4. The control panel indicates an Inch-size paper when an AB-size paper is selected.
<Cause>
1. The strength of the handle latch is not adequate.
2. The strength of the release arm is not adequate.
3. If the locking plate of the front side size plate does not fit into the positioning slot smoothly, one
may try to forcefully move the latch provided with a tab. The latch will then go completely past
where it should normally stop with the result of displacing the torsion spring used for the tab of the
latch.
4. The paper size positioning slots for the AB papers and that for the Inch papers are in proximity to
each other inside the cassette. As such, the front side size plate can inadvertently be positioned
into the Inch-size positioning slot.

2. Damage to the release arm
Replace the release arm (FB1-8478) with the new type.
3. Displacement of the torsion spring
Replace the latch (FB1-8699) with its tab and the front side size plate (FF5-1510) with the new
type.
4. Wrong setting of the paper width
If the user is not using Inch papers, attach the sheet (FB3-8711) for preventing wrong paper width
setting on the inside of the cassette.
For instructions, see the procedure that follows or the Installation Procedure included in the
packing for the copier.

-3/5-

6251-016 Rev. 1

<Procedure for sticking the sheet on the inside of the cassette>

1. Position the front side size plate to the slot marked A (STMT-R) on the paper guide plate of the
cassette.
2. Peel off the paper that will separate from the protective sheet and affix this sheet by using the front
side of the slot marked A as reference and cover the slots marked D, F, H, K, and L, in achieving
the affixing requirements.
Caution:
1. Make sure that the protective sheet is affixed in such a way that it is firmly pressed to the paper
guide plate of the cassette with no bulges.
2. Do not accidentally cover the slot marked A because this slot is to be used for registration of the
paper width standard value.
*Affix the protective sheet by
using the front side of the slot
marked A as a reference.

PROCEDURES TO PREVENT FALLING DOWN OF RETAINING SCREW FOR BUSHING

PLATE (THE PLATE FOR TAKING THE RECIPROCATING MOVEMENT)

Reason

To communicate field procedures to prevent quality problems due to falling down of the retaining
screw for the bushing plate that takes the reciprocating movement.

Details

It is possible that the screw which retains the fixing assembly bushing plate (the plate that takes the
reciprocating movement) loosen and detach as the result of vibration or heat. If the screw detaches, it
can in the worst case fall down into the space between the thermoswitch and the reciprocating shaft to
permit a short circuit. This is to communicate a procedure to follow with machines in the field to
prevent this problem.

Servicing

: During visits for servicing, replace the 6mm screw retaining the bushing plate with the 8mm screw,
and at the same time do the additional work of tightening the nut.
< Precautions to take in proceeding with the work >
1. Begin the work after the fixing assembly has adequately cooled down.
2. Be careful not to scratch the fixing roller or the fixing web.
3. Check the attached bushing plate for taking the reciprocating movement and replace it if found
cracked.

FIXING UNIT

SUBJECT:

INTRODUCTION OF NEW TYPE UPPER FIXING ROLLER

REASON
OHP film, other than the Canon approved type, tends to jam in the fixing unit.
Jamming of OHP film in the fixing unit may cause the separation claws to damage the upper fixing
rollers soft coating.
To prevent this from happening, a new type of fixing roller is introduced and will be available in addition
to the currently used roller FB2-7200-000.

DETAILS
The new type roller has a hard layer which prevents, both, sticking of the OHP to the fixing roller and
digging of the separation claws into the surface of the roller.
It is noted that the image quality in the grey scale may differ with the new type roller; the soft roller type
has a better grey scale fixing.

SERVICING
If OHP film is frequently used and the upper fixing roller gets damaged, replace the originally used
upper fixing roller (FB2-7200-000) with the new type roller (FB4-2545-00E).

PRIMARY CORONA ASSEMBLY, TRANSFER/SEPARATION CORONA ASSEMBLY

Subject

PREVENTING DIRT ON CORONA WIRE

Reason

If the environment where the main unit is set up is bad (dusty environment), the corona wire becomes
dirty easily, and poor images result. Because of this, a design change has been made to improve the
cleaning of the corona wire.

Details

<Symptom>
Poor images: Appearance of black spots
<Cause>
Dirt on the primary corona wire or the transfer corona wire
<Factory measures>
A strong polishing pad will be used to improve the cleaning of the corona wire. Because of this,
changes were made to the cleaner (cleaning block, felt folder) and guide pin.

Servicing

: When the above problem is noted, replace (at the same time) the corona wire, cleaner (cleaning block,
felt holder), and guide pin of the primary corona assembly or transfer corona assembly with the new parts.
Also, in order to stabilize the surface layer of the new corona wire, be sure to perform wire cleaning
5 times from the user mode or service mode after replacement of the wire from the old type to new.
NP6251:
Perform wire cleaning (WIRE_CLN) in service mode (4) for machines with ROM
Ver. 7 installed. For machines with a ROM version before Ver. 7, perform wire
cleaning 5 times in user mode.

-1/3-

6251-019 Rev. 1

Precautions to take in replacing the above parts:

1) The combination of the new cleaner (with strengthened polishing pad) and the old corona wire
(with gold plating) will cause the plating on the old corona wire to come off, resulting in uneven
images. Therefore, never use this combination.
2) Dirt on the corona wire of the pre-transfer corona assembly and the separation corona assembly
hardly affect images. Hence, conventional cleaner will be used.
3) The methods to identify between the old and new corona wire, cleaner, guide pin, and felt holder
are as follows. (See tabulated information and the Figures below.)

FIXING ASSEMBLY ERROR CODES AND REPLACING THE FIXING HEATER

Reason

After replacing the fixing heater, if the heater terminal at the inner side of the fixing heater is bent, the
lead wire assembly will come in contact with the plate on the rear side of the main unit. If the lead
wire coating or the fastons protective tube are damaged, there is the chance of a short against the rear
plate. (See Fig. 1)

If this heater terminal is

bent in the direction of
the arrow, there is the
chance of a short. The

Servicing

: Check the following points when error codes related to the fixing assembly occur, or when the fixing
heater is replaced in the field. (See the service manual for fixing heater replacement procedures.)
1. The above problem can be considered to be the cause of the problem mentioned above in machines
which produce fixing assembly error codes, so check the dimensions as shown in Fig. 2. Measure
by placing the scale directly against the heater cover.
2. When removing and attaching the faston to and from the heater terminal when replacing the fixing
heater, do not bend the heater terminal or scratch the fastons protective tube. (See Fig. 3)
If the heater terminal is bent, replace it.

CAUTION TO BE OBSERVED WHEN REMOVING FIXING ASSEMBLY

Reason

The way in which periodic maintenance is carried out may lead to burning of the fixing assembly AC
connectors. These cautions are provided in order to prevent this.

Details

When removing the fixing assembly from the main unit, if the AC line is not shut off, there may be an
arc discharge between the fixing assembly and the main unit connectors, causing the connectors to be
burned. In order to prevent this, the following procedure, which is already described in the service
manual, should be observed carefully.

!
