question.
a. What is the domain of f x ?
10. For the function f x

b. Classify the discontinuities of f x as

either removable or essential (vertical
asymptote). For any removable
discontinuities, write the coordinates of the
hole they produce in the graph. Show some
work.

c. Write coordinates for any x- and yintercepts of f x .

d. Find equations of any oblique asymptotes.

Show algebraic work.

11. Through algebra and words, prove that the

x2
graph of g x 2
has no holes and no
x x2
vertical asymptotes.

12. A radioactive atom decays by shooting out

something from its nucleus. Once the thing is
shot out, the atom is no longer radioactive.
Radioactive iodine, used to examine peoples
thyroid gland, decays with a half-life of 8.1 days.
a. What kind of function would be an
appropriate mathematical model relating the
amount of iodine remaining to the time that has
passed? Why?

b. A hospital receives a shipment of 23.7

millicuries of radioactive iodine. Write the
particular equation expressing the amount of
iodine remaining as a function of the number
of days since they received the iodine.

c. Assume that the hospital uses none of the

iodine on patients. Use your equation to
predict
i. the amount of iodine remaining after 1
week.
ii. the number of days until the amount of
iodine has dropped to 0.8 millicuries. Show
algebraic work.

d. Show that your answers to part (c) are

reasonable by using the fact that the HALF-life
is 8.1 days. (Dont use the equation.)

e. The iodine was produced in a nuclear

reactor 3.7 days before it was received at the
hospital. How many millicuries were there
when it was produced? Show your set-up and
your answer.

14. You recall that when you compress air in a

tire pump, the air warms up. A diesel engine
works on the same principle. Air in the cylinders
is compressed until it is hot enough to ignite the
diesel fuel. As the air is compressed, its absolute
temperature varies inversely with 0.4 power of its
volume.
a. As the air starts being compressed, it is at
room temperature of 300 degrees Kelvin and
occupies 60 cubic cm of volume. Write an
equation expressing absolute temperature in
terms of volume.

b. What is the temperature when the air is

compressed to 4 cubic cm?
13. The rate at which you receive heat radiated
from a hot sphere such as the sun varies directly
with the fourth power of its absolute temperature,
directly with its surface area and inversely with
the square of your distance from the sphere.
a. Write the general equation for this function.

b. The surface area of a sphere varies directly

with the square of its radius, and its volume
varies directly with the cube of its radius.
Write general equations for these two
functions.

c. The minimum temperature needed to make

diesel fuel ignite is 750 degrees Kelvin. To
what volume must the air be compressed to
reach this temperature?

15. If 300 square inches of material is available to

make a rectangular box whose base has a length
twice its width. Assuming the box is open on top,
find the maximum volume and the dimensions of
the box with this maximum volume.

c. Combine the equations in parts (a) and (b)

to get an equation expressing the rate at which
you receive heat in terms of the spheres
temperature and volume, and the distance
between you and the sphere.
16. a. $500 is invested. Find the amount in the
account after 5 years if:
(i) the annual interest rate is 3% and
interest is compounded annually.
d. If you double your distance from the sphere
and all else remains the same, what happens to
the rate at which you receive heat?

(ii) the annual interest rate is 3% and

Interest is compounded monthly.
b. If an investment earns 5% every 4 months,
what is the annual interest rate?

20. Factor completely as a product of linear

factors: g ( x) 2 x 4 5 x 3 5 x 2 20 x 12
