Building begins at Paris church
PARIS — The dirt is about to fly!
After a three-year process of
discernment, planning and
fundraising, the Paris United
Methodist Church is about to make a
major addition to the church building
for the first time in decades. The
church has been a landmark — serving
the spiritual needs of the community
— since 1880. It has grown and
changed over the years, seeking to
better serve the needs of God’s people.
Very soon, construction will begin
to make the church facilities fully
accessible to all. A ramp has already
been added to the front entrance.
Now, an accessible bathroom and
wheelchair lift to the basement/
Fellowship Hall will open the church
to all comers. Additionally, to
accommodate growth in the church
(both present and anticipated) two
new classrooms will be constructed.
All of this will have new basement
space underneath, as well. The Paris
United Methodist Church will be
well-situated to serve Paris and the
surrounding area for another 130
years.
You can participate in this project by
saving some money and having fun at
the same time! There will be a giant
yard-sale, bake sale, auction and silent
auction at the Paris UMC in Paris,
Michigan (right behind the post office)
on Saturday, May 29. All proceeds
will go to the above-described project.
The yard-sale will be from 8 a.m. until
4 p.m. (please, no early sales). The
auction will be at 2 p.m. The silent
auction will run from 8 a.m. until the
winning bids are announced at the 2
p.m. auction. Delicious baked goods

Barryton Village receives
$40,000 in USDA grant
BARRYTON — The Barryton Village
Board received a $40,000 grant from
the Rural Business Enterprise Grant
program through the United States
Department of Agriculture Rural
Development Office. The village board
will be applying this grant money to
the proposed farmers market on the

Vaccinate To Protect Health
(NAPSI)-Polio, whooping cough
and measles are the diseases of
our parents’ and grandparents’
generations....outdated like eight-
track tapes and typewriters. Or are
they?
In fact, there is real danger that
history could repeat itself when it
comes to many infectious diseases.
Many parents don’t realize that the
germs that cause these diseases still
exist today and can infect infants,
children and even adults if they are
not vaccinated. History shows that
a decrease in immunization sets the
stage for the reappearance of the

diseases of the past, even when the
population was previously protected.
“Vaccines are among the greatest
achievements of modern medicine,”
said Alanna Levine, MD, FAAP,
a spokesperson for the American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). “But
unless people are fully immunized,
they are susceptible to these diseases.
This is a potentially serious public
health issue because many vaccine-
preventable diseases can have
dangerous consequences, including
seizures, brain damage, blindness,
and even death.”
Still, not all children in the U.S.
are getting their recommended
vaccinations. According to the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention’s
(CDC) annual National Immunization
Survey, nearly one-quarter of children
in the U.S. between the ages of 19
and 35 months did not receive the
recommended series of childhood
vaccines in 2008, the last year for
which this figure is available.
To address this gap, the AAP has
launched the Protect Tomorrow
campaign. The campaign encourages
parents to be better informed about
the value of vaccines and talk with
their pediatrician to ensure their
children are up-to-date with their
immunizations. The full immunization
schedule recommended by the AAP,
the CDC and the American Academy
of Family Physicians (AAFP) is
available at ProtectTomorrow.org.
The core components of the
educational campaign are TV and
radio public service announcements
that encourage all of us to remember
the devastation of the diseases
that can now be largely prevented
by vaccines. To complement the
PSAs, there are additional resources
online at ProtectTomorrow.org.
Three individuals featured in the
TV PSA recount their past personal
experiences with vaccine-preventable
diseases.
Cile Turner Borman, who grew up
in Mississippi, remembers how
devastating it was when her Aunt
Sweetie died from diphtheria. Her
family did not have access to health
care, let alone vaccinations, so they
watched in pain as Aunt Sweetie
died. It wasn’t until her family moved
to Detroit and there were vaccine
requirements for school admission
that they learned about the benefits of
immunizations.
“With vaccines available today for so
many diseases, there is no reason why
anyone should have to suffer the way
Aunt Sweetie did,” said Cile.
Jack Bunkley, of Atlanta, was
paralyzed after he contracted polio
when he was 27 years old. Only after a
slow and painful recovery was he able
to walk again. Since being struck with
post-polio syndrome two years ago, he
now has difficulty walking again.
“People should take advantage of
vaccines and not take their health for
granted,” said Jack, who made sure
his children and grandchildren had
their vaccinations on time. “I wouldn’t
want anyone to suffer as I did, and
with the vaccines that are now
available, there are steps parents can
take to help protect their children and
themselves.”
Ann Rittenhouse, of Pasadena, Calif.,
had measles and chickenpox herself
and witnessed the impact chickenpox
had on her sons when they were
young.
“I urged my son to have his daughter
vaccinated,” said Ann. “If there are
medical advances that will help you or
your children avoid illness, then you
should take advantage of them.”

Help For College-Bound
Students
(NAPSI)-Students and families
starting the college search process
have a place to turn to make the
process a bit easier. A new guide for
families helps simplify the process
of getting college-bound students
admitted to college.
The Alliance for Affordable
Services produces the guide and
sponsors a scholarship program
to help make these tasks more
manageable. The College Preparation
Handbook, available free online at
AffordableServices.org/college, shows
students and their parents how to
prepare for college during high school,
choose the right college and navigate
the admissions process.
It also offers assistance for finding
loans, grants and scholarships to help
pay the ever-increasing costs of a
higher education. According to U.S.
Census Bureau statistics, the average
cost of tuition and room and board for
in-state students at a four-year public
college for the entire academic year is
more than $15,000.
“The Alliance for Affordable Services
understands that the cost of college
weighs heavily on hardworking
Americans,” says Paul Pevsner, M.D.,
president of the association. “That’s
why we make this handbook available
to all college-bound students.”
The College Preparation Handbook
can help any student planning
to attend a four-year university,
community college or vocational/
trade school. Filled with tips and
checklists that guide students through
the college search, admissions and
financial aid process, it also provides
links to websites, organizations and
government agencies that offer more
information and assistance.
The handbook complements the
Alliance Scholarship Program,
which is open to eligible 16- to
28-year-old dependents of Alliance
members, and presents $2,000 to
first-time recipients who are pursuing
undergraduate degrees. Renewable
scholarships of $1,000 per year are
available for up to three consecutive
years to scholarship recipients who
maintain a 3.5 grade point average.
Since the program’s inception in
1996, more than $1.4 million has
been awarded; in 2009, the Alliance
awarded $288,000 in scholarships
to 201 college-bound students across
the nation. The annual application
deadline is June 15.

account for a vast majority of the total
carbon footprint of a printing device,
making it the largest contributor
above other factors such as energy
consumption and manufacturing.
So for those small business and home
office owners who really want to

of printing, just looking at “green”
products or products that are “eco-
engineered” is not enough. Even
