Selected-area
measurement:
Only selectedmeasurement
will be successfulwhen the
backgroundas shown in our examplesbelow is either
very bright or very dark and thereforebound to falsifythe
readingof the exposuremeter.Becauseno exposuremeter can discriminate
betweenblackandwhite,i.e.brightor
dark,by itself.lt can forthis reasonbe calibratedonly for
a meangreyvalue,which correspondsto about18%reflecting powerof a grey area.Selectivemeasurement
is therefore inidicatedwheneverthe contrastrange is very high
with unevendistributionof brightand darkareasor when
the sun illuminatescertainpicture portionslike a spotlight,with indoorshotsagainstbrightwindows,withviews
througha gate, orwhenopenlightsourcesandotherdazzling influencesare to be eliminated.Detailsof subjects
which representthe "meangreyvalue"can be measured
withthe selected-area
mode.lt is usedwhenit is necessary
to take full advantageof the creativepossibilities
of light
andwhena certainportionof the subjecthasto be exactly
exposed.
ln the picturesof the top rowthe facewaschosenas the measuringf ieldof the
exposuremeterand a correctlyexposedpictureobtained.The bottomrow
field is
showsfaultyresults,producedwhen the brightor dark surrounding
includedin the measurement.
The facewill then be eitherover-or under-exposed.
