Freedom Blast to honor memory of Johnson

Will feature

Band
The City of Greer will
honor a fallen Vietnam
veteran at this years Freedom Blast Festival, set
for June 25 at Greer City
Park.
Preston Johnson, a Greer
resident who passed away
in January, worked with
the Disabled American
Veterans, organizing the
first Freedom Blast event
in 2009. Because of his
contributions to veterans,
the 2016 Freedom Blast
Veterans Walk will be
named in his honor.
Preston was a integral
part of Freedom Blast from
day one and he knew how
to make things happen to
recognize those who have
served our country, said

Preston Johnson
Ann Cunningham, director of the City of Greers
Parks and Recreation Department. For all of his
contributions to the festival, its his friendship that
we all miss the most. Im
so glad we will be able to
publicly honor his life and
work.
A Military Tribute and

the Preston Johnson Veterans Walk will begin at

8:35 p.m. Veterans of any
branch of the U.S. Armed
Forces who would like to
participate in the walk may
meet at the park fountain
no later than 8:30 p.m.
Speaking at the Military
Tribute will be U.S. Navy
Commander Tadd Gorman, who led the USS Ross
on two patrols in the Mediterranean and Black Seas
as a Forward Deployed Naval Force ship, conducting
Ballistic Missile Defense
operations.
Freedom Blast features
one of the largest fireworks shows in South Carolina (set to begin around
10 p.m.) and plenty of live
entertainment.
The main stage will host
the Early Ray Band beginning at 7:30 p.m. The
bands self-described Carolina Smash Mouth Country Music combines bits
and pieces of each band

What I want people

With the South Carolina

Senate District 5 seat up
for grabs, incumbent Tom
Corbin and John B. White
are hoping voters choose
them on June 14.
White has spent a much
of his campaign knocking
on doors in Greer, hoping to convince Greenville
and Spartanburg voters to
make a change.
Im concerned, like
other citizens in my district, that people go to
Columbia and say no to
everything and dont offer any solutions, White
said. Im pro-family, Im
pro-life and Im pro-gun,
but most importantly, Im
a problem solver. Its time
for us to become problem
solvers and to develop an
agenda in Columbia that
will prioritize what our
issues are and look at
how were going to solve
them.

Its been a very physical

Talley served in the

I think this district has
so much potential to really be an economic driver

A Blue Ridge high assistant principal has been

charged with assault and
battery (second degree)
after an incident with a
teacher at the school.
According to release, the
Greenville County School
District recently notified
investigators with the
Greenville County Sheriffs
Office of an allegation of
sexual harassment.
Police said, through the
course of the investigation, it was learned that
the schools assistant
principal, Tyrone Talbert,
had groped and fondled
a teacher without her
consent while on school
grounds.
Talbert was charged and
arrested on June 3 and
was transported to the
Greenville County Detention Center. Talbert was
released on June 4 on a
$5,000 bond.
According to a statement from the school district, Greenville County
Schools placed Mr. Talbert
on administrative leave on
Thursday, June 2 as soon
as administrators were
informed of allegations
of inappropriate conduct
involving a teacher. The
school district immediately reported the allegations
to law enforcement.
Talbert has been employed by Greenville County Schools since 2005.

Joe Baldwin for county

and can attest that Joe is

compassionate in his decisions as an elected official.
He can also disagree with

manner. Most importantly,
Joe is ethical and free of

opponent, Mike Barnes,
pint to Mr. Barnes experience as a one-term
member of the Greenville
County Planning Commission as a major qualification. I believe that his
service clearly shows why
Mr. Baldwin is the better
choice. My personal home
is directly adjacent to land

while members of the planning commission sought
re-zoning, he did not resign from the commission.
Even after this application,
Mr. Barnes subsequently

Luckily, county council

this in the past, and I am

A love letter to Bonnie

Editors note: Pams beloved Bonnie
passed away last week. This column first
ran in The Greer Citizen last July.

ur little girl in fur pajamas, Bonnie, was distinctly unwell this past
week, resulting in a stay at the
veterinary clinic and receiving IV fluids
to help bring down elevated kidney and
liver numbers resulting from a digestive
upset. Being 14 with cardiac issues all of
the treatment must be monitored carefully under a watchful eye and ear that
no fluid should accumulate in her lungs.
With the exception of when she was
spayed as a youngster, Bonnie has never
spent a day apart from us so you can
imagine my despair and, frankly, guilt,
for not getting her to the clinic straight
away. Living on a farm the terriers get
into the most disgusting things on a
regular basis (preferring maggot encrusted squirrel corpse over Newmans Own
organic dog food) which are generally
easily treated with a 24 hour fast, then
tiny increments of chicken and a bit of
white rice and a half teaspoon of canned
pumpkin to help soothe the tummy.
Coming up the front steps of the
house Monday evening, sick with worry

empathy when
Paul or I were
either ill or a
bit blue and
your affectionate ability to
curl sympathetically against
our chest until

IM JUST
SAYING
PAM STONE
and knowing we wouldnt know if her
BUN and creatinine levels had returned
to relatively normal levels until the following day, a lump rose in my throat as
for the first time in nearly 14 years her
dear face, wriggling body, and relentless
bark of giddy delight was absent from
the other side of the storm door. Neither
was she there to trot alongside me to
the barn, patiently waiting as I fed and
watered the horses and leading the way
back into the mud room before plastering herself against my leg on first, the
sofa, and later, in bed.
When the murmur of her heart eventually takes her from us, it wont be possible to write about it- I cant even allow
myself to imagine it- and so, Bonnie,
here is a love letter.
Thank you for your unconditional love
and loyalty. Thank you for your uncanny

troubles had passed.

Thank you for your unwavering comfort at the loss of both my parents and
three beloved horses and countless cats.
The back of your neck has absorbed
more tears than any handkerchief. And
I will never forget spying you spring
lightly unto the bed of Pauls father,
John, minutes away from his own passing, to curl quietly behind the crook of
his knees.
Thank you for your good natured
ability to greet all with an open heart
completely devoid of suspicion or aggression. Makes you a lousy watch dog
(Hey, follow me! Let me show you where
we keep the family silver!) but gives relief whenever a toddler might run up to
thump your head with clumsy affection.
And thank you for if somewhat begrudgingly, always accepting new animals

into the household, especially Rosie,

who although drives you crazy with her
constant shadowing, thinks you hung
the moon and stars.
Thank you for accompanying me on
silly personal appearances and tolerating even sillier outfits-although I still
think you look adorable in that straw hat
with the giant rose blossom pinned to
the brim. Thank you for your impeccable
table manners and demure partaking of
many a sliver of birthday cake (or Christmas trifle) over the years and your navigational skills as we delivered Mobile
Meals together out towards Lake Lure
(as well as snarling ferociously from
the safety of the truck at any number
of mongrels who approached me with
glinting eyes as I edged my way carefully to back doors, balancing styrofoam
containers of a meat and three.
And finally, dear Bonnie, thank you
for not allowing a single day go by that I
havent felt entirely cherished. It is a bittersweet irony that you have an enlarged
heart. Of course you do, its as big as
all outdoors. I only hope one day I can
be half the person you believe me to be.
Thank you, dearest dog.
I love you, I love you, I love you.

My husband and I took a
trip to the mall one day with
our eight-month-old son. While
my husband entertained our
son, I enjoyed some me time,
window shopping alone. But
after a while I heard a loud,
happy squeal piercing through
the crowd. Immediately able
to identify the screamer, I
whipped my head around and
spotted my husband and son a
great distance away. Our son
was waving happily and blowing me kisses. Even among the
thousands of other sounds filling the crowded mall that day, I
distinguished the sound of my
sons voice.
This experience reminds me
of my relationship with Christ.
Through an intimate relationship with Christ, I am learning
to distinguish his voice, even
amidst the clamor of the world.
John 10:27-28 says, My sheep
listen to my voice; I know
them, and they follow me. I
give them eternal life, and they
shall never perish; no one will
snatch them out of my hand.
My son is a part of me,
and I am a part of him. Sheep
know their shepherds voice
because of the time and care a
shepherd invests in them. Our
Shepherd is a part of us, and
we are a part of Him.
Thought for the day: Today
I will listen for my Shepherds
voice over the clamor of this
world.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us
decipher your voice over the
sounds of the world. Amen.

GUEST EDITORIAL

May job report suggests

more misery still ahead
Barack Obama traveled to Indiana last week to
hold a pep rally about an economy that doesnt
have much pep. He raised a few halfhearted
cheers but it wasnt clear, exactly, what country
he was talking about.
The latest jobs report puts to rest any lingering fantasy that these are the salad days of the
economy. The monthly jobs report said 38,000
jobs were created in May, but together with
downward revisions of the figures from the
previous two months, the net number of jobs
created was less than zero.
The number of blue-collar and middle-class
jobs shrank again. America lost jobs in manufacturing, construction, and mining. Nearly half
of all mining jobs have been lost over the past
two years, due in no small part to the Obama
war against coal.
The unemployment rate actually fell to 4.7
percent, the lowest rate since the recession of
2008-09. But thats a statistical mirage. The
stated unemployment rate fell because nearly a
half-million additional Americans left the workforce in May.
If the economy were as strong as the numbers say, why are so many adults leaving the
workforce? In a recovery workers usually return
to the job market. The Obama record on the
economy is a dismal one: just under 95 million
Americans above the age of 16 are not working.
When it seems the participation-in-the-economy rate cant fall lower, it does. Its the lowest
now since the Carter years. Perhaps some of the
45 million Americans on food stamps or other
government welfare assistance think thats as
good as a job.
The Labor Department calculates that the real
unemployment rate is closer to 10 percent, including workers who have stopped looking for
work and those who want a full-time job but
cant find one. The number of workers who
want to work 40 hours a week and the paycheck
but cant find one, and must work part-time, increased by 468,000 in May.

The unemployment rate actually

fell to 4.7 percent, the lowest rate
since the recession of 2008-09. But
thats a statistical mirage.
This is dreadful news for American workers
and points to an economy growing at a miserable 1 percent over the past six months. The
economy should be growing at 3 to 4 percent,
and the Obama administration still has not produced a single year of growth exceeding 3 percent. In the Reagan years growth averaged 3.5
percent annually, with several quarters above 7
percent.
This administration opposes energy development, demonizes business, strangles employers
with new regulations every week and racks up
debt at a rate never before seen.
President Obamas economists offer only stale
excuses: Its all the fault of the Republican Congress (that the president ignores), George W.
Bush, global developments, the Verizon strike,
and of course global warming.
The reality is businesses arent investing or
expanding operations because theyre struggling against the public policy headwinds created in Washington. To grow, the economy needs
a corporate tax cut, a pro-drilling and mining
energy policy, and a rollback of Obamacare
employment rules. Thats just a start. Its clear
that this economy wont get out of what Jimmy
Carter famously called a malaise by healing itself. Most Obama economic policies must be
reversed. Hillary Clintons only prescription is
four more years. Thats nothing to hope for.

How widespread is veteran

unemployment?
The answer depends on the
age of the veteran. Older unemployed veterans are on par with
civilians, but the younger ones,
aged 18-24, have more hurdles
to jump, at least for a short
period after leaving the service.
RAND points out that the media
lumps everyone into a group
and doesnt account for demographics.
Are tax credits for hiring veterans useful and cost-effective?
Bottom line: Yes. The credits
cost $610 million but increased
veterans income by $1 billion.
It helps that the credit-eligibility
rules have changed. It used to
be limited to disabled veterans
who had to leave the military
because of service-related disabilities, but credits now can be
used for any disabled veteran
who was recently discharged or
unemployed for more than six
months.

Do service members and veterans earn less than civilians?

Short answer: No. Veterans
earn more than civilians, as do
active duty when the benefits
are added in. Further, if the veteran worked in communications,
intelligence or health care, he or
she will earn more as a civilian
than other veterans will.
How effective are support services for veterans transitions?
Bottom line: It depends on
the service. But no matter what
support service is used, some
employers still cant figure out
how to translate military jobs
into their civilian equivalent.
More questions in the study
include: How widespread and
costly are mental-health problems among service members
and veterans? And is suicide a
crisis in the military?

gave up their house, and
my wife and I helped
them find an apartment.
Were also trying to give
them other help while
theyre getting back on
their feet. The problem
is, were paying off debt
and trying to get our own
finances in better shape.
I think my sister should
help out some, too, but
Im not sure how to approach her about this.
DR: Its not out of line
to ask her to help and
then gauge her interest
and willingness. I mean,
its your parents were
talking about. Still, you
cant force someone to
do something they cant
dont want to do.
Before you approach
your sister, you might try
working up a monthly
budget on your parents. It
doesnt have to be compli-

cated just a one-page

document showing their
situation. Let her see that
mom and dad are struggling right now, and suggest that you both chip in
a little each month until
theyre back on their feet
financially.
Dont point fingers or
make accusations, because that will ruin things
in a hurry. Family should
always try to pull together
in times like this. In most
cases, things like this
work out fine and family bonds become even
stronger.

on a big moment in your

proud, and Im glad he
has parents who want to
teach him how to grow
into a financially responsible young man.
I think giving is a really big deal at this age.
Id recommend putting
10 percent toward your
church or a good, local
charity. Its very important to teach kids about
the spiritual and financial
benefits of being a giver.
The remaining 90 percent

you might split evenly

between savings and
spending in the beginning. You can always go
a little heavier on the
savings portion if theres
a concrete goal, like college or a car, in mind.
The process of thinking
ahead and setting goals
is always a good exercise,
too.
The goal here, in addition to teaching him
the value and benefits
or work, is to build the
muscles of his character.
Financially speaking, as
parents, we should want
our children to grow to be
givers, savers and wise,
careful spenders. If they
become all three of these
when theyre young, they
wont be financially irresponsible adults later!

Weve gone to over

5,000 homes door-todoor, White said. Weve
had the opportunity to
talk to people and to find
out what their position is,
and that was important to
me because our motto has
been people, not politics.
People are interested in action and theyre interested
in solutions.
My family started with
meager beginnings. Weve
worked hard and weve
given back to the community, he said. If I tell you
Im going to do something,
Im going to do it. My word
is my bond.
Corbin has also been
meeting with voters, and
said he spends a large
amount of his time fighting for the people he represents.
I took a phone call
(Monday afternoon) from
an elderly lady in Greer
who said an insurance
company had been harassing her for months about
a policy that had been cancelled. She was desperate
and needed help, so were
in the process of helping
her. I get calls like that
every day from constitu-

ents who need help, and I

spend hours trying to help
them. Those things are important to me.
Road funding has been a
hot-issue during this campaign cycle, and both candidates said they would
not be in favor of a gas tax
increase as a solution.
Raising the gas tax is
not necessarily going to
equate to better roads,
Corbin said recently. We
all want better roads.
Theres too much waste in
Columbia. We do not need
a tax increase. We have the
ability to fix our roads,
but in order for us to get
anything moving forward,
were going to have to get
DOT reformed.
White
agreed
with
Corbins sentiment, noting
a lack of transparency in
the department.
Im not for raising the
gas tax, but I am for restructuring
completely
the Department of Transportation, White said.
I want to make the DOT
more transparent and accountable. I want to know
exactly where the money
is coming from and where
its being spent. More importantly, the Upstate
needs to get our fair share

of the money, which we

havent gotten since Verne
Smith was our senator.

hike to fund road repairs.

I am in support of a gas
tax (increase), Scott said
at a recent debate. We
have the third lowest (gas
tax) in the nation. I do believe, in addition to having
that gas tax, we need to
look at a cut in the state
income tax as well.
Scott went on to explain
the problems South Carolina drivers are facing.
Spartanburg
County
has 43 bridges that are
unsafe. Look at I-85 that
we travel on everyday. Its
getting worse and worse.
We cant just think about
our area here. Look at the
flooding that occurred in
the lower part of the state.
Before we can start building new roads, we need to
repair the roads that we
have.
McCraw said there are
also other issues of great
concern within the state.
Ive knocked on about
4,000 doors over the last
four months and the number one topic is infrastructure and roads, and the
fact that nothing is being
done, McCraw said. But,
there are other things
that people arent talking about. Our state owes

about $71 billion, and no

one is addressing the big
picture. Theres a big crisis going forward that we
need to address.
Albert Einstein defined
insanity as doing the same
thing over and over and
expecting a different outcome, McCraw added. I
want people to break that
cycle of insanity and quit

sending the same lifelong

politicians to Columbia.
We need to run the state

that, we need to have a
business owner there.

CRIME
REPORT
(Note: All information
contained in the following
was taken directly from
the official incident reports
filed by the Greer Police
Department. All suspects
are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in
the court of law.)

DRUG TRAFFICKING

Amanda Marie Collins,

29, of 675 Arlington Road,
Greer, was charged with
trafficking methamphetamine, possession of heroin with intent to distribute,
two counts of possession
of a schedule II controlled
substance and citations
were issued for uninsured
vehicle fee violation and
failure to register.
A warrant was issued
for Jason Anthony Mcilhanney, 32, of 105 Verna
Court, Spartanburg, driving under suspension (second).
According to the incident report, an officer on
patrol was clearing a call
at the Walgreens located
at West Wade Hampton
Boulevard and North Buncombe Road, when he observed a white male behaving suspiciously leave
the store and get on a motorcycle in the parking lot.
As the officer watched the
man, later identified as Mcilhanney, a white female in
a gray Mazda 3s came into
the parking lot and parked
near the stores Red Box
machine. The woman,
later identified as Collins,
did not see the officer and
got out of her car to speak
with the Mcilhanney. He
then left on his motorcycle
and Collins went into the
store. The officer noticed
that the dealer tag on Collins vehicle had the date
re-written with a current
date and started into Walgreens to speak with her,
meeting her as she walked
out of the store carrying a
shopping bag. When she
saw the officer, she began
digging through the bag.
When he asked her what
vehicle she was driving,
Collins replied that she

had been dropped off. Having seen her arrive driving

the vehicle in question,
the officer knew she was
lying. As she continued to
lie, the officer informed
her she was under investigative detention and that
he needed both her license
and paperwork. She said
she didnt have the keys
to the vehicle. The officer
then read Collins her Miranda Rights and asked
for her paperwork again.
She admitted to altering
the tag and stated that it
had no paperwork and
that Mcilhanney had taken
her keys when he drove off
on the motorcycle. At this
point the officer placed
Collins under arrest and
picked up the Walgreens
bag she had put behind
the Red Box.
A K9 unit was called because the vehicle was suspected to contain drugs.
The K9 responded and
alerted to the presence of
drugs. Collins then stated
that there was meth in
the front seat and that
she could help them. Officers were able to unlock
the car with a lockout kit
and searched the vehicle.
Inside was a tubular zippered pouch containing
64 baggies, a digital scale,
picks and spoons and a bag
of six white pills identified
as Acetaminophen and
Hydrocodone. There was
also a clear plastic container with a large amount
of crystal rock substance
that tested positive for
meth, and a blue pill identified as Oxycodone.
Officers also searched
Collins and found two
bundles of money in her
bra totaling over $1,000.
She was transported to
Greer City jail. At the jail,
an officer discovered a
large brownish rock in the
box of tampons she had
purchased at Walgreens.
A test revealed it to be 1.5
grams of heroin.
A warrant was also issued for Mcilhanney, who
the officer had seen leave
on a motorcycle. A DMV
check revealed he had a
suspension from 2015 and
is currently suspended
for failure to pay a traffic
ticket.

YOU GOT ME

Jeffrey Dean Lyles, 53,

of 4 13th Street, Greer,
was charged with simple
possession of marijuana
and public drinking.
According to the incident report, an officer was
on routine patrol on West
Wad eHampton Boulevard
when he noticed a vehicle
parked at Dunkin Donuts
after hours with a small
group of people standing
about. Upon the officers
arrival, a man identified
as Lyles turned to face the
officer, revealing he was
smoking a marijuana cigarette and drinking a 40
ounce Bud Ice beer. Upon
seeing the officer, Lyles
said, You got me.
The officer took Lyles
into custody and asked if
there was anything else he
should know about. Lyles
admitted to having a baggie of marijuana in his
pocket. He was transported to Greer City jail.

TIME TO KILL

James Lloyd Tumblin III,

34, of 1419 East Georgia
Road, Simpsonville, was
charged with petit larceny
(property crime enhancement) and driving under
suspension.
According to the incident report, an officer
responded to the area of
Victor Avenue in reference
to a stolen trailer. As the
officer crossed the tracks
on South Line Street, he
observed a white pickup pulling a trailer that
matched the description
of the suspect vehicle and
stolen items. The offier
performed a traffic stop
and made contact with
the driver, identified as
Tumblin, and asked where
he got the trailer. He responded that it was not
his and that he was sorry
for taking it. He was placed
into investigative detention and informed of his
Miranda Rights, which he
waived. He stated that he
was trying to kill time before the scrapyard opened
and it was a crime of opportunity. He was placed
under arrest. When asked
for his license, he stated
he did not have one due to
a DUI. He was transported
to Greer City jail.

Coaches cracking down on concussions

BY BILLY CANNADA
SPORTS EDITOR
As two-a-days and summer workouts start back
up, coaches in Greenville
County will be working to
decrease concussions and
contact to the head.
Out of 1,818 football
players in Greenville County in 2015, there were 75
recorded
concussions.
That number equates to
about 4.1 concussions per
100 players, according to
county Athletic Director
Daryl Nance.
About half of those
were in games and half
in practice, he said. We
think the half in practice
can definitely go down, especially with the new rules
this season. While concussions are not as prevalent
now, 75 is still more than
we need to have.
Thats why coaches in
the district began participating in the Heads Up
football program, put on
by USA Football. The program, funded by the National Football League, requires coaches to receive
safety training and perform blocking and tackling drills that take the
emphasis off the head.

BILLY CANNADA | THE GREER CITIZEN

Greer coach Will Young participated in blocking and tackling drills during USA Footballs
Heads Up program Monday afternoon.
Heads Up makes the
game safer, said Greers
Travis Perry, a master
trainer at USA Football.
Thats the number one
missionto take the head
out of the game. We want
our coaches to increase
their knowledge on concussions, head strokes,
cardiac arrests and the basic fundamentals of blocking and tackling.

Perry said hes noticed

the difference at Greer
High since he got involved
last year.
Were trying to change
the culture, Perry said.
We monitor our practice
schedules closely. You still
have to do some tackling
drills at game speed, but
were coaching smarter.
More than 70 coaches,
most representing local

high schools were in attendance for the training.

We need to make sure
that everything we do is
safe because football is
under attack, Nance said.
When you look at whats
going on in the NFL and the
collisions you seethats
not what were about.
If we can do some things
to make our game safer,
well all be better off.

Heads
Up
football
wants one safety coach
per school, but for us, I
wanted any coach responsible for teaching blocking and tackling to be
involved, he said. Every
high school should have
multiple coaches who are
certified safety coaches.
Nance said although
Greenville Countys number of concussions in 2015
was comparatively better
than other local districts,
it is still an issue that often goes unreported.
A lot of it depends on
the kid telling you, Nance
said. Sometimes you can
observe and see when a
concussion has happened,
but a lot of times it depends on the kid. Thats
another aspect of this program. We want kids to feel
comfortable telling us.
If you can go through a
whole season without too
much injury, thats the
dream of every team in
every sport, he said. But
we have to be prepared
and know the risk every
time out.

at Byrnes.

Rebels search
for quarterback
BY BILLY CANNADA
SPORTS EDITOR
When the Rebels return
to the field this fall, theyll
be doing so under the
leadership of a new quarterback.
Which quarterback that
will be is still in questions.
The Byrnes football team
is entering the summer
with a number of holes to
fill on offense, but head
coach Brian Lane believes
his team will still return
plenty of talent.
We have to find a quarterback, so right now
were going through that
process, he said. We do
have guys like Demarcus
Gregory coming back, who
has about five or six offers
from major D1 colleges.
We want to put a great
support system around
him to build this offense.
Contenders for the job
include: Brock Herald, B.J.
Peak, Dylan Donahue (a
transfer from Chesnee)

and Cary Enos (a transfer

from Spartanburg).
Lane said he expects
competition for the spot
to continue through the
summer.
We want to take the
summer and see how it
goes with 7-on-7s, weightlifting and things like
that, Lane said. Weve
got a several guys competing for the spot.
The Rebels will also be
replacing some experience
in the trenches.
We lost all of our offensive linemen, except
for one who played, Lane
said. We definitely have
to work on our guys up
front. Weve got guys who
did a great job for us in JV,
but adjusting to the varsity level can be a different
experience.
Byrnes will return a
strong defense, however,
consisting of a solid secondary.

The Greater Greer Open

golf tournament took a
back seat to what happened on the sixth hole at
the Greer Country Club
As part of this years
annual tournament, Greer
State Bank sponsored a
hole-in-one prize, giving
all golfers in the field the
chance to win $10,000.
Doug Ramey won the
golf tournament shooting
a 10-under par score of
134, but it was Joe Tucker who got the really big
prize.
Tucker used a 9 iron to
hole out his tee shot from
136 yards on hole number 6 and win the $10,000
prize.
I didnt see it go in,
said Tucker, but I did
hear a roar, said the Greer
Country Club member. I
knew something had happened, but I wasnt sure
till I got up to the hole, he
added.
When
Tucker
approached the green he
found his ball in the hole.
It was the third ace he has
recorded and all of them
have come on the same
hole at Greer.
The group in front of us
got pretty close to making
a hole-in-one. I was glad
the prize was still there
when I made my hole-inone, said Tucker.
The group in front of
Tucker had two narrow
misses. Rick Cobbs tee
shot hit the flag stick and
fell within inches of the
hole. In the same group
Jimmy Wilson hit his tee
shot past the pin, but then

Joe Tucker won $10,000 for his hole-in-one at the Greater

Greer Open.
saw the ball roll back towards the flag. His shot
ended up just inches from
the hole.
I cant remember if we
ever had a hole-in-one in
the tournament, said Steven Gay, the tournament
director at Greer. I know
as long as I have been
here this is the first time
we have had a hole-in-one
and a hole-in-one prize,
said Gay.
Tucker was playing with
Nelson Dixon, E.J. Blanton
and Craig Paris. Tucker
finished the tournament
with a 73 on Sunday. He
didnt win anything in the
tournament, but it really
didnt matter to him.
As soon as I got the ball
out of the hole I started
thinking about the rules
and if I could accept the
prize and not have to be
a professional because I
took the money, he said.
For many years if a golfer made a hole-in-one and

won a cash prize, car or

something of significant
value they would have
been declared a professional. They would have
to stop playing in amateur
events sometimes for as
long as several years.
The USGA Rules of Golf
were changed a few years
ago make an exception for
a golfer who makes a holein-one and wins a prize.
If the hole-in-one is made
during a regular tournament, the golfer can keep
the prize without suffering a penalty to his amateur standing. The USGA
rule is 3-2b.
Amazingly, Tucker was
not the only golfer to make
a hole-in-one during the
tournament. Gary Moore
made an ace on the 155
yard fourth hole. Moore
did not win the $10,000
prize, but he did get a nice
set of Nike irons for his effort.

Concussions

ts a topic football cant

escapeand its not going away any time soon.
Concussions.
On Monday afternoon,
coaches in Greenville
County were given instruction on how to deal
with and prevent concussions through a program
provided by USA Football.
Let me start by saying how great it is to see
coaches take a proactive
approach to player safety.
Football is a dangerous
sport and we need to be
doing everything in our
power to make sure we
minimize that danger for
our players.
Concussions are a
definite problem (and
one that needs to be dealt
with), but its important
that we keep some perspective as we try to weed
them out of our game.
Todays coaches come
from a different era of
football. A much more
brutal era. Back then, concussion protocol didnt
really exist, and if it did,
it was nothing like it is
today.
I played football at the
tail end of this era, when
practices were much
longer, hits were much
harder and injuries were
far more common.
During my ninth grade
year, I was participating
in two-a-days when I received my first (and only)
concussion. When I say it
was my only concussion,
you have to realize that
I rode the bench a great
deal. I was about 5-10
and weighed about 135
pounds. You didnt really
want me getting a lot of
game time.
It was one of the hottest
days of the year and I was
practicing with the kickoff
team. I LOVED the kickoff
team. There was something so exciting about
flying down the field and
beating the rest of my
teammates to the tackle.
Most people turn their
nose up at special teams,
but for me, a guy that
didnt see the field much,
it was fun.
I had to go hard when
I was out there, too. This
was my chance to impress
coaches. I wanted to be
the first guy to the ball every time because I wanted
to be noticed. During this
particular practice, I was
running straight up the
middle of the field when,
out of nowhere, I caught
the worst hit of my life. A
dude named Josh Workman laid a block on me
that I can still feel to this
day. My ears immediately
began ringing. My vision
immediately became
spotty. I was dizzy and I
had trouble recovering.
I didnt say anything
though. I wanted to stay
in. I wanted to keep my
place on the kickoff team.
Thats what you did
back then. You toughed
it out. Thats why its so
hard to change the culture
in football. For so many
years, football was about
rubbing some dirt on the
wound and dealing with
the consequences later.
As we try to become
more conscious of
preventing injuries, lets
try to have a bit more
patience with our coaches
and trainers. Were all
learning how to play this
game better.

Dont go to Rio
By Mark Vasto
For The Greer Citizen

ike all great stories,

heres one that starts
with a girl and ends
with a heart attack. And,
like many misapplied missives, lets try and apply it
to the upcoming Olympic
Games at Rio De Janeiro,
Brazil.
The year is 1996, and
the place is Atlantas
Centennial Olympic Park,
the commons area for
that years games. Located
just outside the Athletes
Village at Georgia Tech
and the dorms at Georgia
State, and forced into

a small, once-barren
urban parcel between the
Georgia Dome and CNN
headquarters, Olympic
Park was a place to grab
a beer at the spacious
Anheuser-Busch tent,
listen to a slate of live
bands and queue up for a
taxi ride home or shuttle
to your car. This was
where I spent much of my
time, working for a large
tech company inside the
Athletes Village.
It was a magical Olympics: Ali lit the torch.
Kerri Strug landed a vault
on a broken leg. The
Dream Team was regulating. And on July 27,

a sporting view |
after a shift, I decided to
celebrate at the Olympic
Park and listen to a few
bands. At that point, I
ran into a girl from days
gone by, and consumed
with nostalgia, we decided
to leave the park to visit
with one another. After
all, the next band was
Jack Mack and the Heart
Attack, and who the heck
were they? I had just seen
Run DMC play the Olympic Athletes Laundromat
and spent the afternoon
chilling with Ziggy Marley

underneath a tree ... I was

good.
I also was lucky. Twenty
minutes later, a bomb
went off in the park, killing two people and injuring more than 100. Had
we stayed, we would have
been within 50 yards of
the blast, and almost certainly taken a nail or two
from the insidious bomb.
I went back to work the
next day and joined the
chorus of volunteers and
amateurs who wanted to
see the games go on.
That was then; this is
now.
It may come as a
surprise to you to learn

that the mosquito is the

most deadly animal on
the planet. Each year,
the little female of the
species bites, drinks from
and in so doing infects,
millions of people and
animals around the world,
killing more than even we
humans do.
This years Olympics
are to be held in Brazil.
They are not ready, nor
are they prepared to deal
with the ramifications
of the Zika virus, a virus
we are just beginning to
understand, a virus that
deforms babies and can
be transmitted sexually.
That last part has me

K_\>i\\i:`k`q\e

the most worried: Athletes are proud of their

bodies. They actually
made the hookup app
Tinder a household name
due to its handiness in
the last Athletes Village.
The World Health Organization is calling for a
delay. Rio is in disarray.
We should heed its advice.
This is how outbreaks occur, and for what? We can
still play the Games, but
we cant be stupid. Zika
is for real, and figuring
out how to handle this
threat is as serious as any
Jack Mack and the Heart
Attack.

Larson wins XFINITY

debut race at Pocono
The maiden voyage of
the NASCAR XFINITY Series at Pocono Raceway
was shorter than planned,
but race winner Kyle Larson wasnt complaining.
NASCAR awarded the
checkered flag in the Pocono Green 250 to Larson
when the race was redflagged after 53 of 100
scheduled laps and then
called because of persistent rain.
The victory was Larsons
first of the season and
fourth in the series, but it
was a source of frustration
to runner-up Erik Jones,
who arguably had the fastest car and was closing
rapidly on Larson when a
rain shower blew in from
the west and stopped the
action.
Ty Dillon finished third,
followed by Kyle Busch
and Joey Logano. Ninthplace finisher Daniel Suarez maintained an 11point lead in the series
standings over Elliott
Sadler, who ran sixth.
The caution flag flew
for the fifth time on Lap
52, when a stormed cell
drenched Turn 3 and began to move over the entire track. Another shower
followed and then a steady
rain, forcing NASCAR to
shorten the race.
Larson likely was the
only driver in the field who
welcomed the downpour.
Im happy with it, Larson said. Now that the
race is over and we got the
win, it can clear out so we
can race (on Sunday) for
the (NASCAR Sprint) Cup
race ... I had kept a gap
on him (Jones) for about
four laps when he was in
second.
The rain was coming,
and it was starting to
sprinkle on his windshield.
We werent quite to halfway yet (when a race becomes official), so I wasnt
really saying much on the
radio, but once we did get
to halfway, it started com-

Kyle Larson
ing down a lot harder. We
were going to be racing a
lot harder in the next lap
or half a lap maybe, so Im
happy that it started downpouring when it did.
Before the race was
stopped, Jones had moved
from fourth on a Lap 44
restart to second place and
was pressuring Larson for
the lead when rain began
to fall in earnest.
Its pretty frustrating,
said Jones, who has two
wins, three runner-up finishes and a pair of thirds
in 12 races this season.
You look at this whole
year, and its kind of been
a season of just missing it
by that much.
Weve missed a few
races with penalties and
circumstance and the way
things worked out, and
today was another one of
those days where I thought
we had a good shot at the
win, and the way it played
out, it just didnt work out
for us.
Larson had surged into
the top spot on Lap 35 and
stayed on the track under
the fourth caution of the
race, brought about by a
violent collision between
the Ford of Ryan Reed and
the Chevrolet of Jeremy
Clements.
After the restart on Lap
44, Larson pulled away to
a lead of nearly two sec-

onds before Jones starting

gaining ground on the No.
42 Chevrolet. Jones was
roughly one car-length behind when NASCAR threw
the caution flag for rain.
A lap later, the sanctioning body red-flagged the
race. During the stoppage,
however, an ongoing feud
between Reed and Sieg
boiled over into a shoving match in the garage.
Contact between their two
cars had preceded Reeds
accident with Clements.
You cant race around
the kid, Sieg said of Reed,
a Roush Fenway Racing
driver. Hes got a lot of
money, and hes got a
Roush car, but he cant
drive it. ... Money cant buy
skill, obviously, with him.
We had a really good car,
but it just sucks that its
torn up here in the garage,
and weve got nothing to
show for it.
Reed was more restrained in his comments,
appropriately so because
of the circumstances. It
was Reeds car that good
loose in side-by-side racing
and initiated the first contact with Sieg. Subsequently, a cut tire on Reeds
Ford led to his brush with
the wall and the collision
Clements Chevy, which
was collected when Reed
spun down from the outside wall to the center of
the track.
Emotions run high, obviously, Reed said. Its
racing. I look forward to
talking about it in a calm,
cool, collected manner and
working it out. Obviously,
we race every week, and
its not going to do us any
good to go out there and
get into a battle royal.
The brouhaha in the garage marked the end of
the excitement, however,
as the rain persisted, and
NASCAR called the race
just before 4 p.m., after a
stoppage of one hour, 35
minutes.

Kyle Larson took the victory at Saturdays NASCAR XFINITY race at Pocono Raceway.

Truex goes for second win

Martin Truex Jr., from
the one-car Furniture Row
Racing team based in Denver, Colorado, set a NASCAR record and Charlotte
Motor Speedway record on
his way to his first victory
of the season in the CocaCola 600.
Truexs 588 miles led in
a single race were the most
in NASCAR history. The
previous-best total was
Jim Paschals 502.5 miles
led in the 1967 World 600
at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Truexs 392 laps led
marked the highest total
in a race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The previous-best mark of 335 was
also set by Paschal in the
1967 World 600.
He also recorded the
17th perfect driver rating
(150.0) and first at Charlotte since the inception
of NASCAR loop data in
2005.
So far this season, the
New Jersey native has led
the most laps in the three
races Texas (141), Kansas
(172) and Charlotte (392)
and paces the NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series in total
laps led (809). He ranks
second in average running
position (7.6) and driver
rating (107.8), as well as
third in fastest laps run
(364).
Truex heads to Pocono

Raceway next for Sundays

Axalta We Paint Winners 400 (1 p.m. on FS1)
a race he won last year.
In 20 career starts at the
Tricky Triangle, the No. 78
Toyota driver claims one
win, three top fives, seven
top 10s and an average
finish of 15.3.
Truex currently sits
sixth on the Chase Grid
on the strength of his one
win, two top fives and six
top 10s.

HAMLIN HOPES TO
REDISCOVER MAGIC

Denny Hamlin leads all

active drivers with four
wins at Pocono, but has
not visited Victory Lane at
the Tricky Triangle since
2010.
The No. 11 Toyota driver will attempt to turn his
luck around in Sundays
Axalta We Paint Winners
400 by notching his first
win since he edged out
Martin Truex Jr. by a mere
.010 seconds in the Daytona 500.
Hamlin owns the seriesbest driver rating among
active competitors at Pocono (107.2), along with
the second-best average
running position (10.7). He
also has nine top fives and
13 top 10s in 20 starts at
the 2.5-mile track.
In his last two starts,
Hamlin finished seventh

at Dover and fourth at

Charlotte following showings of 31st (Talladega)
and 37th (Kansas).

EARNHARDT EYES
FIRST WIN

During his resurgent 2014

season, Dale Earnhardt Jr.
swept the Pocono races
on his way to four wins
his first multi-victory
campaign since 2004 (six
wins). He also took the
checkered flag at the Daytona 500 and Martinsville
fall race.
Earnhardt will attempt
to visit Victory Lane for
the first time this season and grab the ensuing
Chase berth in Sundays
Pocono showdown.
In his last six Pocono
starts, the No. 88 Chevrolet driver has recorded
five top-five finishes. His
one outlier was an 11thplace showing last June.
Earnhardt has tallied two
wins, 10 top fives and 14
top 10s in 32 overall starts
at the Tricky Triangle.
On the season, Earnhardt ranks 13th on the
Chase Grid via four top
fives and five top 10s. He
has struggled recently,
failing to record a top-10
finish since his runner-up
showing at Bristol.
Earnhardt has three runner-ups this season.

Author Nancy Welch releases new book

BY BILLY CANNADA
EDITOR
Local author Nancy Turner
Welch is hoping to take readers
back to the 1960s with her new
fictional work, The Reunion.
Welch, a Clemson University alum, has authored several
works in the past few years, including: The Inkeepers Tales,
Cooking on the Go, The Four
Ingredient Cookbook, A Taste
of Good Humor Cookbook, and
Alices List.
The new book explores a romantic encounter between two
former high school sweethearts.
Its about a young woman
who attends her 35th class reunion. When she gets to town,
she finds out that her old boyfriend wants to see her, Welch
said. They get together and
walk down memory lane, and
then he springs a big surprise on
her. Its a fun story about rekindling an old romance.
Welch said the inspiration for
the story was not hard to find.
I went to my 35th class reunion and several of my classmates had actually married and
had children, Welch said. A lot
of them were interested in getting back together with their old
boyfriends and girlfriends. I just
thought it was kind of unusual.
Here we are, going through life,
and we have these first romances that we think are puppy love,
but then we go through life and
the people that we started out
with still have such an impact
on us.
The Florida native became
more serious about writing in recent years after being diagnosed
with cancer.
Two things came together for

I talk a lot about

was a magical time.
Nancy Welch

me at the same time: cancer and

writing, Welch said. Last year,
I took a fiction writing class at
Furman and I realized that all
the things Id been working on
had a bit of truth in them. My
instructor told me that the best
way to write fiction was to start
with something youre familiar
with, and put your own quirky
spin on it. So thats what I did.
There are certainly some aspects of The Reunion that are
truethings that I knew about
classmates and stuff like that,

PRESTON BURCH | THE GREER CITIZEN

Nancy Turner Welch (seated) recently held a signing for her new book, The Reunion, at Kirk Hall in Greer.
she said. It was fun to weave in
some of those tales throughout
the book.
The book follows a couple
down memory lane into the
1960sa simpler time, according
to Welch.
I talk a lot about growing up
in the 60s, Welch said. It was
a magical time. It was before
drugs or drinking became such
a big part in the lives of young
people. The worst thing you
could do back then would be to
buy a pack of cigarettes and go

down to the beach and everybody have one cigarette. That

was just scandalous.
You can really appreciate this
book more if you can recall what
it was like during that time, she
added.
Welch is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment for
cancer that has spread to her
lungs.
I just dont feel good, she
said. But the good thing is, the
day I get my chemo treatment,
they give me so many steroids

that I come home ready to write.

The first day I had my new
chemo treatment, I stayed up
until 2 a.m. writing. Thats been
one good thing. You just have to
live with it and go on. You just
hope there are more good days
than bad days.
The Reunion is available at
Dobson Gifts and General Hardware in Greer, or at Fiction Addiction in Greenville.

GLT closes 90th season with Mary Poppins

BY BILLY CANNADA
EDITOR
Greenville Little Theatre is
wrapping up its 90th anniversary season on Cherry Tree Lane,
with its rendition of the Broadway musical Mary Poppins.
With a cast and crew of more
than 40 people, Mary Poppins
will run through June 26.
Its a mammoth undertaking,
said Sam McCalla, co-director of
the show. This show combines
all of the things that make a
show difficult. Weve done shows
with large casts before. Weve
done shows with large moving
pieces of scenery and magic effects before. This show is all of
that wrapped into one. Its a very
fun piece to tackle.
The cast of 32 rehearsed the
musical for 10 weeks before
opening on June 3.
We normally rehearse for
about eight, but with how big
this show is, we needed to add a
couple of weeks, McCalla said.
I feel great with where we are,
and Im proud of the work that
everybody has put in.
Emily Grove is starring as Mary
Poppins, while Samuel Floyd
takes on the role of Bert.
It was really difficult getting ready for this, but in such
a great way, Grove said. Shes
such an iconic character. Julie
Andrews did such a great job in
the movie, so you really have to
be that character that everybody
in the audience knows. But you
also have to make it fresh and
not just copy someone elses
performance.
Grove is joined on stage by local sibling duo Benjamin Benji
Augusta Key and Briana Key.
Benji and Briana, both a part
of the ensemble, are natives of
Greer.
Its great getting to do a show
with him for the first time, Briana said. Its fun being with
him, but that doesnt mean hes
going to be nice to me.
The Keys have done shows
at Greer Childrens Theater in
the past. While Briana has performed in Mary Poppins before,
this experience is new for Benji,
who has worked with Greenville
Little Theatre during productions of All Shook Up and Jesus Christ Superstar.
You really have to get in
shape for this one because these
dances will kick your butt, Benji
said. Its a lot of fun on stage.
The production features a
number of family favorite songs,
such as: Jolly Holiday, Step in
Time, A Spoonful of Sugar and
Anything Can Happen.
One thing we talked about
with a lot of the principal characters is that these iconic figures

Emily Grove stars as the iconic Mary Poppins alongside Samuel Floyd as Bert during Greenville Little Theatres production of the Disney classic.
live in their body, McCalla said.
We dont necessarily want them
to copy what someone else has
done, but we want them to learn
from that character. Doing a
piece from Disney, people have
an expectation of what the piece
is going to be like before they
come. Everyone has worked very
hard to make this show great,
and I think thats what theyve
accomplished.
Grove said she admires her
character.
I really like her point of view,
Grove said. Shes always saying anything can happen if you
let it, and that really strikes a
chord with me because the way
you look at a problem is going
to determine the outcome. I like
that about Mary Poppins.
Greenville Little Theatre held
a 90th anniversary gala in May,
commemorating nearly a century of performances.
Its been a really big year,
McCalla said. I kind of feel like
doing a show of this magnitude
is a great way to end the 90th
anniversary season and really go
out with a bang.

Centre Stage introduces hearing assistance system

Centre Stage has announced the addition of
an Assisted Hearing Loop
System inside its 285-seat
theater. The installation of
the Loop System was done
by American Loops and
sponsored by Come Hear
Greenville.
Induction Loop Systems
include a permanent wire
installation inside a facility that magnetically transmits sound to hearing aids
and cochlear implants
with telecoils (T-coils). The
T-Coil uses no electricity
so it doesnt affect the bat-

tery life of the hearing aid.

The signal from the loop
plays through the customized hearing aid programming and is mixed and adjusted by the hearing aid
to compensate for the users hearing loss, giving as
close to true sound reproduction as possible with
an assistive device.
T-Coil equipped hearing
aid users with Loop Systems enjoy clear sound.
An Induction Loop System
eliminates
background
noise and echo by sending
the audio signal directly to

the hearing aid without extra equipment or devices

to connect or put over the
ears.
Centre Stage also received
four
earphone
headsets which pick up
the Loop System for those
who do not have hearing
aids or who do not have
hearing aids with T-Coils.
T-Coil equipped hearing
aid users with loop systems have another amazing venue to now enjoy
clear customized sound
at Centre Stage right here
in Greenville, said Jeremy

LaFebre, Hearing Instrument Specialist at Come

Hear Greenville.
Being In the Loop
eliminates
background
noise and echo by sending
the audio signal directly
to the hearing aid via the

T-Coil. To the listener,

it sounds like the actors
and actresses are sitting
on their shoulders, talking
directly in their ears. We
love helping people with
hearing loss, and we love
Centre Stage Theatre, so

we were so excited for the

opportunity to bring them
both together in this most
beautiful way.

the European Old Master collection. They will
then create a project
reflecting that days adventure theme as well
as enjoy a small snack.
The Adventures in
Art series serves as a
great way for kids to
learn about and enjoy
art and history in a laidback, summer setting,
says Jessica Hargett,
M&Gs SC-certified secondary education coordinator.
For the past two
weeks, M&G has also
hosted its annual Kids
Create! art day camp.
This program, which
runs the entire month
of June, provides an
extensive outreach to
hundreds of children
every summer.
Kindergarteners are
introduced to the basic
elements of art, covering the foundational
principles of shape, line,
texture and color while
the elementary school
students explore the
medieval times, learning about the different
aspects of daily life and
culture of people living
during the middle ages.
Since the program
takes place at M&Gs
main museum, students
receive an inside look at
art from the time pe-

riod, viewing paintings

and objects dating back
to the Middle Agesas
early as the 1100s.
Students not only
have the opportunity to
learn about the history
of medieval art, Amy
Basinger, M&Gs events
and marketing coordinator shares, they also
have the opportunity
to see first-hand prime
examples of the era in
M&Gs own collection.
On the Saturday of
each Kids Create! week,
children and their families are invited to Family Day. This event gives
each family the chance
to enjoy the collection,
shop in the gift shop,
and see their childs art
on exhibit in the museum.
Middle school students will learn the
techniques of watercolor painting at a full-day
camp in Kids Create!
2016 Watercolor Studio
from June 13-17.
On the afternoon of
June 18, these young
artists will open a special exhibition of their
works at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Greenville before
being moved to the
Starbucks adjoining the
Hyatt from June 19-July
5 for public display.

SCHOOLS RAISE MONEY

FOR RELAY FOR LIFE

Students and staff at

Berry Shoals Intermediate laced up their walking shoes last week and
logged some walking time
for a great cause.
The school hosted its
annual KidsWalk to benefit Relay for Life. The
KidsWalk features the
survivor lap, the team lap
and the silent lap as Berry
Shoals recognized those
who lost their fight with
cancer.
Following the walk, the
school had its Relay for
Life celebration program
in the gym. The program
featured a visual presentation of all Relay for Life
events that took place this
year, student musicians,
and a special speaker, former Berry Shoals student
and cancer survivor, Sam
Brown. At the end of the
program, several teachers
were silly-stringed by their
students as part of a money raising incentive, all going to Relay for Life.
Berry Shoals finished as
the number one intermediate school fundraiser
for Relay for Life and the
second overall money
raiser, raising just under
$13,000.
Staff members from
Duncan Elementary joined
thousands from across
Spartanburg at the annual
Relay for Life event earlier this month.
Duncan leaders raised
$3,752 this year for Relay
for Life and exceeded the
funds raised in 2015 by
$1,000. At the event, four
members of the staff were
honored as cancer survivors with luminary bags,
a survivors shirt, and a
wonderful dinner.

NEW RELEASES
FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 20
PICKS OF THE WEEK

Midnight Special (PG)

-- Roy (Michael Shannon)
has just kidnapped his
own son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), from a Southern
cult (led by Sam Shepherd)
that wanted to use the boy
for his supernatural abilities -- he sees and hears
things we dont, and otherworldly lights emanate
from his eyes and hands.
Of course, the government
wants control over the
boy, and it has a quickthinking NSA specialist
(Adam Driver) trying to
unravel the mystery while
the manhunt unfolds.
Joel Edgerton and Kirsten
Dunst also are there to
assist getting Alton to
his destination, but what
awaits him there remains
shrouded in intrigue.
Director Jeff Nichols lets
the special effects (though
admirable) take a backseat
to the suspense and powerful performances, notably from Shannon -- an intense actor who is great at
depicting men with thunderstorms hiding behind
stoic faces. Some viewers
might not find satisfaction in the concluding act,
but everyone can appreciate the road it takes to get
there.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (PG-13) -- More
than a decade after their
endearingly quirky nuptials, Toula and Ian (Nia
Vardalos and John Corbett)
are trying to re-spice their
relationship while anxiously preparing for the
college-departure of their
eye-rolling teen daughter,
Paris (Elena Kampouras). It
also turns out that Toulas
parents were never technically married because
the priest back in Greece
never signed the marriage
certificate, so theres another overblown wedding
to plan as a centerpiece
for the family comedy.
Those who were pleasantly surprised by the
charming nature of the
original will sadly see anything unique and surprising washed away.
Much of the cast returns
for this sequel, but many
of them seems at a loss
when it comes to reproducing that initial charm.
Embrace of the Serpent (R) - Deep in the
heart of the rain forest, a
shaman named Karamakate finds himself at odds
with what to do with the
encroaching white men of
the outside world. First,
when he is a powerful
young man, Karamakate
encounters a German researcher in dire need of
a specific healing plant.
Later, as a wizened elder,
Karamakate comes in contact with another outsider
searching for the same
plant. Tense, unflinching
and intriguing, this drama
-- done completely in black
and white -- reaches deep
into the heart of darkness.
The Brothers Grimsby (R) - The ultra-raunchy
comedy from Brit comic
Sacha Baron Cohen follows two young orphan
brothers, separated as
children and reunited as a
mismatched action team.
Nobby (Baron Cohen) is a
moronic yokel and drunkard, whos overplayed redeeming quality is his love
for his younger brother,
Sebastian (Mark Strong),
who has grown into a
killer super-spy for MI-6.
Cohens comedy used to
laugh at things we werent
comfortable acknowledging, but now its mostly
about butts and grossouts.

CHAPMAN RECEIVES HAYES

SCULPTURE FOR DISPLAY

Chapman Cultural Center has received for public display a painted-steel

nonobjective
sculpture
by the noted artist David
Hayes.
The multisided sculpture is painted in bright
primary colors and sits at
the entrance of Chapmans
theater. It is on permanent
loan from an anonymous
patron.
Hayes, 1931-2013, was
an American sculptor noted for pioneering sculptures in metal and for his
works graceful curves,
shapes abstracted from
sketches of objects and
ideas. His earlier works
were usually black, however, early in this century, he
began adding bright and
bold colors to his work,
which became his iconic
style.
In reference to his work,
Hayes once said: Each
sculpture begins with the
ink and gouache drawings
that I do each day. The
forms and shapes, and
their interaction, are delineated on paper, with the
color showing each different form. The drawings
themselves are derived
from copious notebooks
of sketches that I make to
depict objects and shapes
that I respond to in nature and the environment

medium of her preference, Blanchard said.

Women Under Pressure
features Converse College
alumnae Jamie Bunney,
Katy Butler, Carly Drew,
Mandy Ferguson, Elena
Hernandez-Rubio, sisters
Hailey Hodge and Victoria Hodge, Rozetta Nesbitt
and Jasmine Sanders and
a single work by Professor
Blanchard.
Three of the featured
artists, Drew, Bunney and

Ferguson, are also Greenville Technical College

graduates. Each continued
their education at Converse College to complete
a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
RIVERWORKS Gallery is
operated by and for the
faculty and students of
the Department of Visual
Arts at Greenville Technical College. It is located
at 300 River Street, Suite
202, along the scenic
Reedy River in downtown

around me. Later they are

painted with several coats
of primer and weather
resistant colors. The coloration of the pieces is
determined by what I see
in the shapes themselves.
And though the pieces
have individual titles, I
leave the interpretation of
each to the realm of the
viewers imagination. The
sculptures are out in the
open and can be viewed
under different weather
and light conditions as
they are all made for out
of door exposure. I have
a strong conviction about
art in public areas where
it can be seen and enjoyed
in uninhibiting surroundings.
The Hayes sculpture at
Chapman can be viewed
daily.

Is knee replacement surgery

the only option?
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am
a female in my 60s, and for
the past couple of months
I have been having some
discomfort and swelling in
my right knee. I am slightly overweight and have osteoarthritis. I have no pain
when walking, but when
leaning over, I get a tight
pain in the front of the leg,
below the knee. I saw my
orthopedic doctor, who
told me that the cartilage
is worn away, and said
that I would need a knee
replacement. I was given
a cortisone shot, which
helped the pain.
Would losing weight
help me avoid surgery? I
take an anti-inflammatory and rubbed Bengay on
the knee, which helped. I
went for another opinion
from a second orthopedic
surgeon, had more X-rays
taken and was given the
same diagnosis. Is there
anything more I can do
to avoid having a knee replacement soon? -- C.W.
ANSWER: Osteoarthritis of the knee can cause
permanent loss of the cartilage. Once the cartilage
is gone, the knee replacement is by far the best option to reduce pain and improve function. However,
there are some things you
can do to delay the need
for surgery, as well as to
feel better. Losing weight
is important, if you are
carrying more than you
should. Your body weight
is multiplied when you
are going up and down

stairs, so losing even a few
pounds means much less
pressure inside the knee.
Anti-inflammatories and
Tylenol reduce pain but
dont affect the progression of disease. Bengay,
topical anti-inflammatories and capsaicin creams
help some people. Steroid
injections are a good option for some: Hyaluronic
acid shots, such as Synvisc, help many as well.
Exercise, however, definitely improves both pain
and function. Walking a
little bit farther each day
means being able to walk
still more without pain.
A joint-replacement surgery shouldnt be undertaken lightly. Not everybody has a good outcome,
and an infection in an artificial joint can be devastating. However, it has been
my experience that most
people who have gotten
a joint replacement wish
they had done so sooner,
so dont suffer for too
long if these treatments
arent helping.
The arthritis booklet
discusses osteoarthritis,
along with rheumatoid
arthritis and lupus. Readers can order a copy by

DEAR DR. ROACH:
What do you know about
Himalayan salt? Is it harmful to take every day? I am
told that it can help lower
blood pressure, because it
has minerals and trace elements. -- M.S.
ANSWER:
Himalayan
salt, though it has a pretty
pink color and trace minerals, is still almost all table salt -- sodium chloride
-- and salt raises blood
pressure for most people.
Keeping sodium intake
down is likely to reduce
risk of heart disease and
stroke. Generally, people
with a healthy diet get all
the trace minerals they
need. Most studies on
multivitamin and mineral
supplements have shown
no benefit.
Dr. Roach regrets that
he is unable to answer individual letters, but will
incorporate them in the
column whenever possible. Readers may email
questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

Greer officer Jordan Williams and K-9 Boss performed demonstrations for the crowd
attending Blue Ridge Animal Hospitals 25th anniversary Open House on Saturday. More
than 275 people came out for tours, live music, complimentary barbecue, vendors and
snow cones.

DEAR PAWS CORNER:

Ill never forget the first
cat I ever brought home.
Two Socks was a shelter
cat who had been adopted
by a college friend. For
reasons I wont go into,
my friend was unable to
keep him and figured this
out about two weeks after
adopting him from the local shelter. He was about a
year old then, very shy and
skittish, but also super curious about everything.
My friend asked if Id like
to keep Two Socks, and
even though I had never
owned a cat before and I
would have to dredge up a
pet fee to keep him in my
apartment, I said yes.
I didnt regret it one bit.
Two Socks had personality
to spare. Over time he was

joined by two more cats,

Chewy and Belle, but
he ruled the apartment despite his shy nature. Two
Socks lived to be about
14 and eventually passed
away after a long illness.
You never forget your
first pet. I only regret that
I didnt get to keep pets
when I was younger, but
Im making up for it now
