Carolyn Mongi1, Natalia Fivawo1 , Vedastus Mkunda1 , Baraka Mazengo1, & Baraka Kaweye1. (2016)

Since the government do not provide subventions to St Johns University of Tanzania (SJUT),
income have been reduced significantly, challenging the University to diversify its revenue
sources. Partly in response, the faculty of natural and applied science, propose to expand
alternative income sources. Possible income sources were identified, which include establishing
agricultural projects, grants writtings, short course training and applied research and consultancy
.Models from other Universities reveal the same way toward generating additional university
income, with emphasis being placed on utilizing core competencies and adding value to
knowledge. SJUT is positioned to generate its own income and significant income and in so
doing also contribute to regional and national development.

Conditional Analysis
The St John's University of Tanzania (SJUT) was established in 2007 by the Anglican church of
Tanzania, out of the main campus. Located in Dodoma, a semi-arid region with rapid
development

in Tanzania, SJUT is the countrys among

private University. One of the

universitys main objectives is : To learn to serve SJUT receives most of its income from fees
from non-degree and degree programmes. These revenues are, however, not enough to sustain
the university, taking into consideration the decline in non-degree student enrolment and rise in
inflation. In addition to this, the capacity of students to absorb increased fees has reached its
threshold. The lack of resources also presents a major problem for the further growth and
development of the university. This major phenomenon has forced not only SJUT, but other
universities in the country as well as the government univerities ,to identify other means of
generating income.

Possible Income Sources

With the uncertain economic climate in Dodoma, and the challenges that come with
globalization, university have had to seriously find ways of being competitive in order to remain
on the market. Possible income sources are agricultural projects, applied research and
consultancy, short course training and grants/donor support.
Agricultural projects It is necessary to understand that Dodoma is a semi-arid area where most
of horticultural products are imported from other regions hence make the price of such products
to be higher in Majengo market; by establishing University horticultural units , SJUT will be
suitably qualified to respond to local needs through solving the problem of fresh vegetable
availability . Apart from horticultural unit SJUT can expand further in establishing ;Poultry unit 200 layer chicks if purchased from known company and grown within six months
will start laying eggs which can be sold to local chips frier and other peoples in Dodoma, budget
and other requirement for poultry unit attached in the detailed budget sheet. This project also is
necessary for university as one of mininstry requirement for agricultural program but also
problem solving techniques for recent increase in the demand of eggs supplied to the market due
to the increaseing population presure of Dodoma city.
Piggery unit 40 piglets if purchased from local people and supplied well with diet will only
take 9 months to reach selling weight, budget and other requirement for piggery unit attached in
the detailed budget sheet. This project

also is a pre-requisite for university in launching

agricultural non-degree programs as stipulated by the mininstry of agriculture but also will
solve the problem of increased demand of pork supplied to the market due to increasing
customer preferances for pork.
Dairy cattle unit 20 pregnant heifers of Mpwapwa breed to be purchased from Tanzania
livestock research institute in Mpwapwa. These heifers will take approximately 7 months to
calving if the University will buy pregnant heifers with 2 months . After calving one cow will
produce 10 litre in twice a day (TAD) milking system and mpwapwa breed are cows which

survive in hot climatic condition without affecting the milk production ability unlike others
higher producing breeds (freasian , Jersey and Ayshire).

Pasture plot A demonstration plot will be needed for practical classes for non-degree students
but also the pasture can be harvested during flowering stage and make hay that conserved for
sometimes. The hay if many can also be source of income although this not quaranteed
depending on the number of livestock the university will have. In Dodoma due to climatic
condition being dry all the year around the preferable pasture species which grow well in semiarid i.e Panicum Coloratum and Centrus Ciliaris, the seeds for both species are easily available
for price of 15000Tsh per kilo. The students will take part in planting and management for
pasture plots as part of students practical sessions.
Applied Research & Consultancy Applied research involves research that leads to development
of practical applications. It also involves institutional consultancies and deliberate problem
solving approaches. In its simplest form, applied research becomes an income generating source
when university provide research services to industries with the aim of solving existing
problems. For example, SJUT can cooperate with other universities and research institution in
spearheading the currently regional greening networking which involved Dodoma region and
other drought districts and regions . Renewed approaches to applied research may produce a
viable income sources. University can through corporative education and other collaborative
means can investigate industries for existing problems/issues, then conducting applied research
for problem solving approaches. SJUT is poised to adopt this proactive approach through active
participation of its research staffs and students in dedicated applied research.
Grants All over the world the Universities benefit significantly from grant agencies. In fact,
some universities, such as the University of Dar es salaam, Sokoine University of Agriculture
and Mzumbe University have established dedicated units solely for obtaining grants and other
donor support. These units are equipped with individuals who are responsible for seeking various
funding opportunities and identify areas within the University that can garner financial support
from external agencies. Grants are best obtained through collaborative efforts and partnerships.

Grant agencies need to be reassured that sustainable results are produced from their funding.
SJUT has to enter in partnerships with agencies such as the European Union (EU), Canadian
International Development Agency (CIDA) US-AID , Australian AID, Japanese international
Coorperative Agency(JAICA) , Korean International cooperative agency (KOICA) , Norwegian
church aid, Swedish internation development agency(SIDA), Danish international development
agency (DANIDA), Belgium technicla cooperation (BTC), VLIOUS-Beligium, for research
projects and the delivery of workshops and seminars.
Training Training involves the delivery of short courses, workshops, seminars and conferences.
They are often administered through continuing education and professional development units.
Public and private sector entities often require professional development for their staff in specific
areas; SJUT may respond to this need and in so doing generate an income sources. SJUT through
Continuing Education & Distant Learning Unit (if any ) should start offering short professional
courses, such as, Academic Writing , introduction to statistical data analysis software (Minitab,
SAS, SPSS, R-studio) , basic computer courses (Word, excel, publisher, graphic and design etc).
The resultant effect will be the creation of a cadre of adept individuals who are able to provide
professional services to the wider community.
Conclusion
The condition analysis of likely future funding strategies to increase revenues from different
proposed projects establishment will make University to be sustainable. With the prospect of
significant future competition of degree program applicants due to high admission criteria set by
the government that only high school leavers with division one and two will be admitted for
higher education and the country have big number of government and private universities.
