Information on Industrial park development in Ethiopia

According to a news on Allafrica.com, Ethiopia plans Export Hubs with $10 billion Factory
parks, targeting $1 billion of annual investment in industrial parks over the next decade.
Ethiopia strives to be the hub of light manufacturing industries in Africa, placing an
ambitious plan to develop world class with fascinating soft and hard infrastructure. And the
ongoing expansion of the parks helps the country to move towards becoming a middle
income country by the year 2025.

As CEO of the IPDC said, Industrial Parks Development Corporation of Ethiopia (IPDC) is
mandated to develop and operate wide ranges of industrial parks in the country. Between
2016 and 2025, IPDC will develop 100,000 ha of land (10,000 Ha annually), for a total
factory floor area of 20 million m2 (2 million m2 delivered annually). He also said, working
together, he is so confident that remarkable results would be registered in the year to come
and further progress will be made in the second growth and transformation period, GTP II
(2016-2020).

Four Industrial parks at Bole Lemi, Addis Industrial Village, Kilinto and Hawasa are already
constructed and start delivering service. Starting from 2016, IPC will develop additional
parks in Mekelle, Dire Dawa, Kombolcha, and Adama. With a final size ranging from 500 to
2000 hectares, each park will be developed in phases of 75-200 hectares, and will have its

Bole-Lemi has a total of 342 hectares available. During the first phase, 156 hectares of land
are being developed, including the construction of 20 factory sheds and common facilities.
Development of the remaining 186 hectares will begin at a later stage. Bole-Lemi will focus
on the textiles, garments and leather products (including footwear) sectors.
Moreover, there is an opportunity to develop a private Industrial parks as per government

The Ethiopian government announced plan to establish 10 industrial parks within five years
so as to boost manufacturing industries.

The Bole-Lemi Industrial Park is expected to incorporate twenty factories. Hawassa


Industrial Park is also targeted to house 38 factories. It is slated to see completion by 2016.
All together the factories in the park will create 70 thousand job opportunities. According to
corporations action plan, about two million job opportunities will be created in the next10
years.

The establishment of industrial parks in Ethiopia is financed with a loan obtained from the
World Bank (WB), and part of USD 10 billion is secured from Eurobond mainly from
Europe and the United States.
