The Industry

fter the Indian economy was liberalized in 1992, the steel

industry took a big forward leap. The private
entrepreneurship and investment grew and the production as well
as consumption started rising. The conventional blast furnace
route uses metallurgical coke as one of the inputs for steel
production. India, though rich with coal reserves, does not have
much of coking coal. It has vast reserves of non-coking coal which
is suitable for sponge iron making. This triggered the rise of
sponge iron based steel industry in central and eastern part of the
country. Chhattisgarh, once known as rice bowl of the country, is
endowed with non-coking coal as well as the iron ore, two most
vital inputs for the steel industry. In the last decade or so,
numerous coal based sponge iron units were established in the
state starting from a tiny capacity of 50 TPD to 350 TPD. Later on
many of them did forward integration and added melting furnace,
casting equipment and a rolling mill to make what is today known
as 'Mini Integrated Steel Complex'. It also had a co-generation
module and the unit was made self sufficient as far as power is
concerned. In this growth process, a lot of pollution control
measures were also adopted by the industry to achieve
sustainable green growth. A lot of big steel players also got
attracted to this state. SAIL already had a plant at Bhilai but Jindal
Steel & Power Ltd., Monnet Ispat Ltd., made their flagship
factories in the state. Today Chhattisgarh boasts
to be the largest producer state of sponge
iron as well as finished steel in the country.

he steel industry not only in India but also in our state is going through the most
challenging period ever. On one hand the demand seems to be stagnated and on
the other hand, raw materials availability and cost seems to be out of control. Many
sponge iron and steel making units in the state are facing survival problems and few of
them have already stopped their operations. The issues like availability and quality of
power, pollution control norms need to be discussed at length. The sponge
iron & steel producing units, technology and equipment suppliers, consultants,
policy makers, everybody has a
role to play in this process.
The conclave will discuss
all the important issues
facing the industry so as
to move forward on the
way of sustainable green
growth.
