Bio-Threat, Bio-terrorism & Bio-Defence

Preparedness & Need for Proactive Approach
June 23th, 2016, New Delhi, India:

Bioterrorism is use of biological agents to intentionally produce disease or

intoxication in susceptible populations - humans, animals, or plants - to meet
terrorist aims. The Bioterrorism & Bio Threat underlines need of proactive
approach. Bio defence is a proactive action that uses medical measures to
protect people against bioterrorism. This includes medicines and
vaccinations. It also includes medical research and preparations to defend
against bioterrorist attacks.
The conference focus on preparedness by having a plan before it happens. It
discusses possible avenues for the bio defence, including the impact of
developments in synthetic biology, and it gives an inside view on the biodefence industry and its unusual business model.
The governments need to have long-term planning to resolve an outbreak of
an infectious disease with multiple casualties and governments realise that
they have to be proactive, not reactive in developing preparedness against
bio threats. The leading companies& their experts should engage themselves
in multiple development programmes with governments, the more success
stories there will be, and eventually innovation will create a more substantial
market with more players.
Bio defence is complicated industry because of the many things that have to
align together like public perception, incentives, understanding of threat,
transparency, acceptance of failure and long-term commitment.
The countries should have also haven on replicating vaccines in their
stockpile. Replicating vaccines are acceptable for a large proportion of the
population. The vaccines should also live up to modern standards
This discussion also focuses on a biotech companies which has spent
considerable amount of time developing a vaccine against what has so far

been a non-existent disease. It also explores possible avenues for the reemergence of disease, including the impact of developments in synthetic
biology, and it gives an inside view on the bio defence industry and its
unusual business model. It also requires that in addition to creating a
dedicated bio defence platform
Lt. Gen. (Dr) JR Bhardwaj said that Bio threats have the potential to paralyze
an economy and can prove to be far more dangerous than nuclear and
chemical weapons. India has the capability to undertake bio defence and
DRDO and other such institutions were working towards it.

We should have some kind of assurance and preparedness plan in case of an

outbreak that can be communicated to the public. Efficient and convincing
communication to the public is absolute key in dealing with a pandemic.
