Being an intern in ADIA has given me the opportunity to explore ADIA as a whole and IT department
particularly. Although I have been working as a research assistant with my international business
professor in the US, I did not know how a real career would be like.

Introduction
Being an intern in ADIA has given me the opportunity to explore ADIA as a whole
and IT department particularly. Although I have been working as a research assistant
with my international business professor in the US, I did not know how a real career
would be like. The internship is a more beneficial and practical experience as I was
given different tasks to do and other responsibilities like being organized with the time
and work. The internship lasts four weeks and it is in the IT department. Throughout
the internship, I met different people who taught me about their jobs and how they
collaborate with each other to achieve ITs vision. I learned that there are seven
divisions, each has its own objectives and responsibilities, and they all work together
through their shared values and strategy.
Social Skills and Professional People
Throughout the internship, I have attended several meetings; each focuses on a
different issue. However, I was focusing on the social skills and how employees interact
and deliver their information and ideas to each other. Good thinkers should be good
listeners as well; colleagues should listen to and do not interrupt each other. Also, there
are other things to keep in mind when attending a meeting, be prompts, come prepared,
be active, be a good thinker, and a good listener.
IT Governance Framework in ADIA
Like thousands of organizations worldwide do, ADIA adopts certain frameworks
for IT. IT department has spent a lot of time and efforts to find the best standards they
can follow to maintain its competency. So far, ADIA adopts two framework, ITIL and
Cobit. Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a set of practices that
take the most out of IT to service the organization in the most efficient way. ADIA has its
suitable ITIL as they took the standards and customized them.
Infrastructure Division
Although there are different divisions, I only had the chance to discover the
infrastructure division. This division works in delivering intensive solutions to
customers, offering services that encourage and improve technology adoption, and
giving practical advice to all divisions. Specifically, I started my internship in the End
User Technology (EUT) section. This section consists of two teams, application services
and Foundation services. One of the recent achievements of the application services
team is more than 390 automated packages/sequences. That new achievement basically
aims to save time and effort by enabling us to categorize employees into different
groups, and when we build a computer it automatically installs the apps for each
computer based on what the employee needs. For example, if I work in a department
where we use particular apps, then all my colleagues who need these apps and I would
be in one group, and there is a preconfigured system that automatically installs those
apps with no needs to do them manually. The system is called Microsoft Systems Center
Configuration Manager (MSCCM).

Managed Client
IT has been upgrading all machines in ADIA into the new platform, the Managed
Client. Managed client is a tool or a platform that controls how many and what apps an
employee has on his computer. Also, all apps will be installed remotely and
automatically based on the employees needs. On the other hand, the legacy system
requires manual assistance for most cases. IT has built an image with the most common
apps that all departments need, like Microsoft Office. Before applying the new platform
to all employees and departments in ADIA, IT wanted to test it and make the necessary
fixes and updates so they can decrease the complaints and everyone use the new
platform with ease. 370 employees volunteered from all over ADIA to evaluate the new
platform and cooperate with IT to come up with the best copy of windows called the
golden image. Those employees have received pilot machines, exclusively prepared for
this project. Another task IT worked on is distributing the new machines. Based on
employees needs, they were given either a laptop or a desktop, along with the IT
coordinators and heads of each department; IT has determined each employees need.
Following a particular plan to finalize the project, IT has already changed almost all
machines in ADIA. Some steps of the process of replacing the devices is to tell the
employees about the date of the change, tell them to move their files from C to desktop
or other shared files. Then, tell the SDS who gets the machine, which kind, and what
additional apps to be installed etc. Although the project took a lot of time and efforts,
it is saving more time and effort after finalizing it.
Common PCs
Common PCs are computers prepared based on the departments requirements.
There are three main benefits or jobs for the common PCs; There are used by interns,
labs, and other temporary users, used by employees who are in charge of critical tasks,
and used by employees when travelling. Temporary users like interns need computers
to use for the period of training, and common PCs can be used by them until they finish
their internships. As for the employees, some of them deal with important tasks so they
use common PCs in case their main computers fail or get slow when processing some
tasks. Common PCs are also used by employees when they travel so they can reach their
files and work from their destinations. These machines should only be assigned for
particular people, and given after justifications and permissions from different people
and then an employee can get one if his request gets approved. When IT decided to
upgrade all machines to the managed client platform, they revisited and reviewed
common PCs holders and determined whether they still need them. Also, there is an
investigation occurs every few years when replacing old machines. Common PCs would
be taken out from those who do not need them anymore. Now, all machines including
common PCs should be using the new platform, the managed client. Therefore, IT has
much more control and observation of who use the computers and what those
computers are used for. In addition, IT distributes common pcs to some departments
that require special apps, like Bloomberg software, to be used by a group of employees
rather than buying a separate license for each employee while they do not use them too

often. Common pcs are still under the legacy system and are not upgraded the managed
client yet. So far, all pcs have been replaced in ADIA except the common pcs. The team
met with SDS several times to negotiate what steps we should do in order to replace
those computers. Replacing common machines is not as simple as I thought. They need
to figure things out before the replacement, for example, some clients using the common
PCs have some files on the C drive, and the managed client platform does not allow
users to save any files on C. Therefore, we need to inform them that they should move
those files to Desktop or Documents unless they do not need them.
End User Technology (EUT)
The other team of the EUT section is called Foundation services. One of the
projects I have been helping them with is evaluating Windows 10, the totally new
operating system from Microsoft. I searched for its new features and how would we
benefit from it in case we upgraded from windows 7. I made a list of the main features
and improvements, and then made a small comparison between the two operating
systems. Also, I built Windows 10 on one laptop and then tested more than 500
applications on it. Then, I made a list of the results and categorize them into Passed,
Failed, or Reconfiguration. Passed means the installation process completed, failed
means failure of installation because of missing prerequisites or other errors might
occur during installation. Reconfiguration is mainly for shortcuts that require further
edit to work on the new OS, the shortcuts should work automatically just by one click,
however, they do not work in Windows 10 except by running them manually.
Evaluating Windows 10 is a very important task for IT as their plan is to upgrade
all current devices to the new operating system. The result will help them to determine
the time and work they need to spend for the migration. Also, we learn what benefits we
would get and how would the new operating system increase the productivity for other
departments. Later, we meet with people from other departments and explain to them
the new features and improvements within the new OS.

Windows 10 Main New Features

Free upgrade from win 7 or 8 for the first year
It starts up and resumes fast
It has more built-in security to help keep you safe
It is designed to work with software and hardware you already have
Microsoft Edge, the default new web browser lack of add-ons, plugins, or extensions
Power management has been improved, so mobile device battery life tends to be a
little longer
Search includes Windows Store apps and web search, with results shown in a much
more organized fashioned.
Windows 10 puts a notification center that on the right of the screen, where the
charms bar was in Windows 8, with notifications from various apps at the top and
your choice of various settings buttons at the bottom for quick access.

The new 'Home' view in Explorer shows you a Quick Access list of useful locations and
folders you visit frequently, with a list of recently opened files underneath it, which is
faster than having to go to the Recent Places link in older versions of Windows.
If you need to arrange a lot of windows and you don't have multiple monitors, you can
put them on multiple virtual desktops. You can use Alt-Tab to move between apps as
usual and then Windows-Ctrl and the left and right arrow keys to move between
desktops.
Instead of having 15 min to restart and install update, you can schedule time to install
update once it has been downloaded. If you want to have certain times off-limits for
restarts, you'll need the features in Windows Update for Business (for Windows 10
Pro and Enterprise) which lets you block restarts so they don't happen in working
hours, or on certain dates.
Windows 10 gets a new Windows Store, where you can download desktop programs
as well as modern Windows apps. Many of those apps will be universal apps that are
the same code on a PC, a Windows phone, an Xbox One and even on HoloLens, with
the interface changing to suit the different screen sizes.
You can change the look of Windows 10 on a touchscreen PC by turning on tablet
mode either as a setting or by removing or folding away the keyboard on a two-inone or convertible PC. That takes away the normal taskbar, giving the user one with
just a Windows button (which opens a full-screen Start menu that shows the tiles and
hides the scrolling list of programs), a back button, Cortana and the task switcher
button.
Windows 10 can use your face or your iris to log you on to your PC. Windows Hello
will work with existing fingerprint readers, but it needs a new 3D infrared camera in
your PC to use your face it needs the infrared to know that you're alive and the 3D
camera to get the contours of your face, so it doesn't work if someone holds up a photo
or wears a mask.
Windows 10 includes the latest version of Microsoft's graphics API which has major
performance improvements but will also work with many existing graphics cards.
That's not just good news for gamers; it will speed up any Direct3D apps that are
written to DirectX 12, which will include CAD software and other demanding graphics
tools.
Windows 10 includes a new app to help you get your phone set up to work with your
PC and with any Microsoft services you use like Cortana, Skype, Office and OneDrive.
So you can plug in an iPhone and set it up to back up photos to OneDrive or get your
Xbox Music tracks on an Android phone.

Cortana
On Windows 10, Cortana is a voice controlled digital assistant, similar to Siri and
Google Now. Built to turn voice generated queries into actions, Cortana is able to do
anything from searching Bing (or maybe Google if you ask nicely) or giving you weather
updates, to managing your calendar and personal contacts or telling you how your team
will play next week. For these services, Cortana depends on powerful search algorithms.
In other words, it makes sense that she would show up along with the Windows Search
app. Cortana's Notebook is where she keeps track of what you like and what you want
her to do. Use it to tell Cortana about your interests, favorite places, and the "quiet
hours" when you dont want to be disturbed.
Microsoft 2016
According to Microsoft, Microsoft Office 2016 has been followed by a number of updates
including:
1. Real-time co-authoring comes to the Windows desktop. In the first preview
version, only Word 2016 supports it meaning that you can work with other team
members on Word 2016 on the desktop or Office online on the same document
at the same time.
2. Deeper cloud-integration to "create, open, edit and save" files from your desktop.
Improved attachment of files from OneDrive in Outlook.
3. New batch of smart applications and machine learning to improve how you work
with the programs including Bing Insights support to retrieve web information,
the Exchange feature Clutter which prioritizes mail and Tell Me, a search tool
that finds commands you type.
4. New analysis tools in Excel including one-click forecasting, integration of Power
Query, improved Power Pivot, new charts and graphs, and option to publish to
Microsoft Power BI Preview.
5. Data Loss Protection for Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
6. Multi-factor authentication in Outlook.
7. Information Rights Management extended to Visio files.

8. Better network traffic management, enhanced distribution management, flexible

update management.
Word updates and new features:
There are finger-friendly cursor controls for easy text selection and
copy/pasting, plus tapping on a spelling mistake brings up a touch menu of possible
replacement words. There's also a new Bing-powered feature for Word called Insights,
and this looks up background information, websites and news stories for selected
words. Track changes, comments and co-editing are available too, but not every layout
tool is present in this Word app.
Excel updates and new features:
New snap functions and smart scrolling which make tapping in your spreadsheet
data an easier process. It has the same touch-friendly interface, but it's not as stripped
down as with Word, and it boasts a status bar that lets you switch between sheets in
your workbook and view the results of common formulas for selected cells.
