Lyric analysis

The video its self does not have a narrative, yet you can see that illustration is
used through the actions that the actors do. Mostly the video is disjunctive as the
video does not really relate to the lyrics. The setting and dancing are completely
irrelevant.

The opening shot uses an establishing shot, with an

extreme long shot, it establishes the setting of the
rural areas of the video. At this point in the video
there is no lyrics and an almost techno music is
playing. This gives the video an asynchronous vibe as
techno music may be something you associate with
the city more. Linking in with the genre (alternative)
and being different and unconventional.

The second shot establishes the characters in the

video, and possibly the relationship that is being
spoken about in the lyrics. The shot is a two shot
making it easy to establish the relationship between
the two as they are both visible, and within the field of
vision. The setting is again linking to the disjuncture
used in the video as it is irrelevant to any of the lyrics.

The second shot is when the lyrics begin to be heard

and there is a slight element of illustration is used.
The lyric is you said it was about the weather and he
gestures towards the sky with his hand. Again the
shot is a two shot allowing you to see the relationship
between them.

There is then a cut to a different setting which is the

main concept of the video. The actions by the men
seem that they are having a conversation and
reasoning with each other. The song is laid out similar
to a conversation/ the end of a relationship. The men
appear to be discussing this. You said it was about
the nevers something that may have been said
towards the end of the relationship which they are
now discussing.

The table is also an interesting element to the

video as the lyrics in the song are possibly linked to
a discussing at the end of a relationship: something
like this conversation may have happened over a
table yet not in a field. The setting again adding to
the disjuncture in the video. The use of a two shot
again adding to this conversation feel of the lyrics.

but I think it was about us is the lyric playing over

this two shot, the man on the right points to the two
men as if to say it was about us illustrating the
relationship between the two ands the breakdown of
their relationship.

Again during this two shot the man on the right is

miming out the lyric over the shot, it was a
combination he rolls his hands together also adding
to the illustrative approach with the actions.

Yet again the lyric and actions are linking together in

the two shot when the lyric is playing. For the lyric
saw it in the constellations the man point up at the
sky.

The couple then begin to dance, yet again adding to

the disjuncture of the video. The point they begin to
dance is when to chorus starts and the beat pics up.
The dance helps to make the pace of the video pick
up along with the beat. Although within the dance
parts of the song are still illustrated through their
movements and you didnt see it coming because
no one ever does the mean dance with their hands
up to their eyes.

The chorus then stops and the ben go back to sitting

at the table, continuing with the conversation like
verses. You said it was about the rush again linking
to the conversation after a relationship breakdown.

The next shot is again another two shot like the

whole video and the two men have continued the
same relationship throughout the whole video sitting
at opposites across the table. With the conversation
like lyrics

The final shot is a change of location again to a new

one not yet seen in the video. Yet the two men are
still in the same position as seen throughout. And
again the men are gesturing the lyrics in an
illustrative way.
