    Weworkthroughpartnershipsthatensurelocalownershipandlastingresultsandbelieve
    successliesindevisingstrategiesthatbothconservebiodiversityandcontributetohuman
    development.Ourguidingprinciplesareto:respondtolocalneeds,respectnationalpriorities,developstrategicpartnerships

    securingthreatenedareasofhighbiodiversityimportancethroughlandpurchaseandlocalconservationagreements.
    ThroughtheGlobalTreesCampaign,apartnershipbetweenFFIandBotanicGardensConservationInternational,FFIChina
    hasworkedontheconservationofthreatenedtreessince2004.Ourworkhasfocusedontheconservationofexceptionally
    rareandthreatenedmagnolia,coniferandrhododendronspecies.FollowingFFIsguidingprinciples,weworkinpartnership
    withanetworkofnaturereserves,researchinstitutions,governmentagenciesandlocalcommunitiestoachievegainsfortree
    conservation
    In2010,FFIChinainitiatedathreeyearprogramtosupportover30naturereservesthathosttargetthreatenedtreesin
    southernChina(GuangxiandYunnanProvinces),developingtheircapacityintreeconservationandhelpingthemtosecure
    fundingandinitiateconservationinterventionsfortargetspecies.Throughthisprogram,wereceivedarequestfrom
    YinzhulaoshanProvincialNatureReserve(PNR)tohelpsavetheZiyuanfir(Abiesziyuanensis).Likeotherfirtrees,the
    Ziyuanfirislargeandimpressivewhenfullygrownandisanimportantfeatureoftheforestecosystem.Itisclassifiedas
    Endangeredandhasexperiencedaseverepopulationdeclinesinceits1979discovery.Nowonly600individualsremain
    acrossthreepopulationsinJiangxi,HunanandGuangxiProvinces.Yinzhulaoshanhostsafragilepopulationof50.2014
    fundingfromSaveOurSpeciesFundisallowingustotakeactionforthespecies,workingwithreservestaffandlocal
    communitiestosafeguardthehighlythreatenedpopulationinYinzhulaoshan,butearlyresultsclearlyindicatethatadditional
    supportisdesperatelyneeded.Thereservesfourrangersalonearenotenoughtopatrolanareaexceeding10km2while
    alsodealingwiththreatsfromillegallogging.Infact,thisMay,oneofthereservesremainingZiyuanfirswasillegally
    harvested.CofundingfromMBZSCFisneededtostrengthenthisprogramandgivethisthreatenedspeciesachance.
    Requestedfundswillallowusto:developacomanagementplanforsustainableresourceusewithcommunitiesliving
    outsidethereservebetterunderstandresourceusewithinthereserveandworktogetherwithvillagerstocarryoutjoint
    patrolsthussubstantiallyincreasingprotectionfortheZiyuanfir.
