UP Education Society
Warm greetings!
Agham Youth (AY) is a duly recognized university-wide organization based in the
College of Science. We are advocates of making science and technology serve the
people through designing activities that would contribute to this end.
In celebration of the 17th anniversary of Agham Youth and in participation with the
USCs Alternative Classroom Learning Experience (ACLE) for the 2 nd semester of AY
2015-2016, AY will be holding a forum entitled Of Gravitational Waves and
Making Waves of Change on March 31, 2016 (Thursday), 1:00 pm to 4:00
pm at College of Science Auditorium.
In this light, we invite your organization for partnership in this event.
Attached herewith are the concept paper and the partnership packages for the said
forum.
For your confirmation, please contact the number below or email us at
aghamyouthdiliman@agham.org on or before March 21, 2016. You can also
contact us for clarifications or questions regarding the event.

more power!

With you in service of the Filipino youth and people,

Of Gravitational Waves and Making Waves of Change:

Role of Basic Science Research in National Development
Date:
March 31, 2016 [1:00 PM 4:00 PM]
Venue: CS Auditorium
Rationale:
Science is a collection of social practice of mankind, collected and verified
throughout its history into a systematic body knowledge we know today. At its
beginning, scientific research solves problems necessary for the existence of
humans such as food and shelter to things that makes mans existence more
convenient (telecommunication, transportation) and production goods more efficient
such as machines.
Scientific research also develops from simple practical observation of mans
everyday work into a well-organized establishment composed of professional
researchers. Nowadays, scientists deal with finding solutions to contemporary social
problems but it also deals with fundamental questions that may not have practical
purpose as of the moment. Researches in basic science, like confirming the
existence of gravitational waves, other quantum phenomena, and how the universe
started, require large sums of funds but do not make an immediate impact in the
daily lives of common pedestrians. The question now is, do we need to fund these
researches? As a developing country, do we need to engage in basic science
research? Do these researches even have practical sense?
Our objective in this forum is to enlighten common people in the importance of
basic science research even in the setting of a third world country. We also aim to
popularize scientific researches being done here in the country that may help
advance scientific culture in the country. We also hope that this endeavour would
stir public discussions that could lead to changes in policies that hinder current and
future researches.
Riding on popularity of the of recent confirmation of the existence of gravitational
waves and the celebration of the centenary of the Einsteins General Theory of
Relativity, the discussion will start with the discussion of gravitational waves and its
implications with how we view the universe.
The forum will continue with presentations of local contemporary scientific
researches in the field of mathematics, physical sciences (quantum chemistry,
quantum time of arrival) and biological sciences, and the impacts of these
researches.
A final speaker will then synthesize the whole event discuss on the need and
importance of these kinds of researches to a developing country.
Objectives:
- Enlighten common people in the importance of basic science research even in
the setting of a third world country.

Popularize scientific researches being done here in the country that may help
advance scientific culture in the country.
Stir public discussions that could lead to changes in policies that hinder
current and future researches.
