Chickens come home to roost mega farm on the way

2016 AMG | Parade

BY KAY LOUTH

JENNINGS
TOWNSHIP

Metaphorically, the chickens came home

to roost this week with both the Jennings
Township Trustees and Van Wert County
Commissioners taking heat for what local
residents perceived as a lack of responsibility on the elected officials part.
Just a few short weeks ago, the residents
of Jennings Township and nearby Salem
Township discovered that an out-of-town

entity Pine Valley Ranch, with a New

Bremen address has petitioned the Ohio
Department of Agriculture for a permit to
build a chicken farm that will house two
and half million chickens just south of
Monticello, approximately five miles west
of Spencerville.
Local residents Steve Simindinger and
Brett Rider pulled together a community
of angry residents Tuesday night, who
expressed their anger at the elected officials for their perceived lack of action.
Simindinger and Rider, as well as several of
the dozens of residents who packed the yard

at the monthly township meeting, noted

that they only found out about the proposed
chicken farm by accident, even though the
Commissioners and Trustees have been
aware of it for several months.
Residents forcefully noted they voted
the officials in and it was their responsibility to take care of the residents. Those
comments often brought applause.
No one from the ODA was present at the
meeting. Officially, residents missed the
June 22 deadline for public comment and
Tuesday night, they called for local officials
to petition the ODA for a second hearing.

Commissioner Stan Owens said that he

and the other commissioners would petition
for a second hearing but added there were
no guarantees.
Commissioner Thad Lichtensteiger
also texted State Senator Cliff Hite and
Representative Tony Burkley during the
meeting, requesting they petition the ODA
for a second meeting. Hite replied that
he has already done so and also took the
opportunity to lay fault at the feet of local
officials.

New church to
reach bikers, others
BY ERIN COX
DHI Media News Editor
ecox@timesbulletin.com
VAN WERT Tattoos, piercings, jeans and biker gear
are all welcome attire to Whitehorse Biker Church that will
open its doors July 17.
The goal of the church is to provide an inviting atmosphere for the people in the area who have slipped through
the cracks or who do not feel comfortable at other local
churches.
We are going to reach an element that is unchurched or
very disenfranchised with church, Pastor Steve Slowride
Haskins said. Very few people established in churches are
going to come our way thats not our goal. Our goal is to
create a place for these people that are disenfranchised, that
fall through the net, that have no place to go.
The churchgoers of Whitehorse Biker Church do not
need to be bikers, Haskins insisted.
Weve told them were after gun nuts, rednecks, hillbillies, Trump supporters, car guys, people that generally just
dont fit in a normal church, he said.

DELPHOS The 2016 Canal Days Committee once
again promises a fun-filled free entertainment lineup for the
festival weekend.
With such a wide variety in the free entertainment this
year, there is truly something for everyone, committee
member Diane Sterling said.
Friday night will feature the talents of The Logan
Ross Band from Columbus Grove. This band, comprised
of many familiar faces, performs extensively throughout Northwest Ohio. Headed by Logan Ross, Randy
Cavanaugh and Dean Maag, the Logan Ross Band has a
play list spanning decades and multiple genres. They have
been seen in Findlay and Bowling Green and often open for
local favorite Nashville Crush.
The band consists of lead vocalist Logan Ross, who was
born and raised in Columbus Grove. Hes is the life of the
party and always ensures a good time.
Dean Maag, a Kalida native, is the bass player and
backing vocals for the band. He also plays for other bands
like Nashville Crush and will be ready to entertain you at
the drop of a hat.
The drummer, Nate Felkey of Lima, has been playing
since he was 10 years old and has played in large venues
such as Country Concert. He, too, plays with Nashville
Crush when not with Logan.
The up-and-coming Logan Ross Band will bring an
exciting show to Canal Days with hits all the way back to
the 90s.
Taking the stage on Saturday Evening will be the Naked
Karate Girls. No worries they are neither naked nor
girls! This ensemble is a favorite of Buckeye Nation. They
are not just another band, they are an experience.
Consisting of four guys from Cincinnati, Naked Karate
Girls perform an all-encompassing show, with choreography and costumes to make for a fun and entertaining show.
They have done shows for Reds opening weekend and

Naked Karate Girls

often tailgate for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Headlining at
clubs throughout the Midwest, private parties, weddings
and corporate functions, Naked Karate Girls will bring you
a show that will not disappoint.
Rounding out Sunday afternoon entertainment will be
local band Strummin Steel. Featuring a more laid-back
acoustic feel, Strummin Steel is the perfect group to come
watch as the hustle and bustle of the weekend winds down.
The band is fronted by the Wurst family and features Austin
Paxson. With a primarily country repertoire, Strummin
Steel will be sure to bring an exciting end to our festival.
The Canal Days Committee hopes to see everyone
uptown this year for Canal Days Sept. 16-18.

Local liver recipient earns

national award for
promoting organ donation

he United Network for Organ Sharing

2016 National Donor Memorial Award for
Excellence in recognition of his untiring
efforts as an advocate for organ, eye and
tissue donation. (Submitted photo)
BY KARA STEELE
Director of Community Services
Life Connection of Ohio
The United Network for Organ Sharing
(UNOS) recently presented Life Connection
of Ohio volunteer Harvey J. Steele with
the 2016 National Donor Memorial Award
for Excellence in recognition of his untiring
efforts as an advocate for organ, eye and tissue donation.
Nineteen years ago, doctors gave Harvey
one week to live. End-stage liver disease
transformed Harvey into a frail, jaundiced
man who couldnt even walk. Harvey, who
received two life-saving liver transplants in
November 1997, has been making the most of
his second chance at life ever since. Harvey
always says he never has to play the lottery

because he won it twice.

Harvey has volunteered for Life Connection
of Ohio since 1997, and his involvement has
ranged from media interviews and hospital
outreach to awareness events and speaking
engagements. When Harvey was on the waiting list for a liver transplant, he promoted
organ, eye and tissue donation whenever
possible. Calls poured into Life Connection
of Ohio as a result of Harveys story people wanted to know more about donation
and how to register in honor of Harvey. Life
Connection of Ohios secretary estimated the
increase in calls per day to be 10 times the
typical amount!
Harvey co-hosts K100s Shores & Steele, a
number-one radio show in Toledo, and he uses
that platform to spread the word about the
importance of organ, eye and tissue donation.
He has donated countless hours of free publicity for the cause by sharing his story on air and
via social media, broadcasting live from special events, emceeing ceremonies and recording monthly PSAs. He has spoken on behalf
of Life Connection of Ohio at churches, high
schools, sporting events, civic meetings, seminars, and the list goes on. Organ, eye and
tissue donation rates have steadily increased
in northwest Ohio and statewide, due in large
part to Harveys efforts.
Calls still come into Life Connection of
Ohio today because of Harvey spreading
the word. From the hugely diverse audience
Harvey talks to through his microphone every
day, it is clear that his impact knows no
boundaries.
UNOS, which runs the nations transplant system, established the National Donor
Memorial Award for Excellence in 2010 to
recognize exceptional advocates who promote
organ, eye and tissue donation and transplantation. UNOS solicits nominations for the
award from the organ procurement organizations and transplant centers across the United
States. Harvey was nominated by his daughter
Kara, Life Connection of Ohios Director of
Community Services, and he is the first organ
recipient to earn this prestigious award.
I am humbled by this recognition, but the
true heroes of organ, eye and tissue donation
are the donors and the donor families people
who at the worst time of their lives thought of
others and allowed their loved ones to give the
gift of life, Harvey said.

As jackpot rises, DeWine warns

consumers to avoid lottery scams
Information submitted
COLUMBUS As the Mega Millions jackpot rises, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine
is warning consumers to beware of lottery and sweepstakes scams.
Consumers are receiving phony calls, letters, and Facebook messages claiming they have
won money. They are told they must send $200 to $300 or more to cover fees, taxes, or insurance. If they pay once, theyre told to send more money. In reality, they have not actually won,
and any money they send will go to a scam artist.
Anyone can fall for these scams, Attorney General DeWine said. If youve truly won the
lottery, you shouldnt have to pay fees to receive your winnings.
Lottery scams often begin with a phone call or letter claiming the consumer has won millions
of dollars. The scammer may pretend to be associated with a legitimate game, such as Mega
Millions or Powerball, or lottery organization.
In a newer twist to the scam, consumers receive a message from a Facebook friend, who
claims the consumer has won money. The friend directs the consumer to contact an agent or
pay upfront fees to receive the winnings. What the consumer doesnt realize is that the friends
account has been hacked and the message is actually coming from a con artist, not the friend.

half, remove the seeds, and mince.
In a large sauce pan, heat the oil over medium heat.
Add the onions, Jalapeo peppers, garlic, raisins, and
curry powder, and saut for 5 minutes. Remove the
mixture from the heat and pour into a heatproof bowl.
In the same saut pan, over high heat, mix the lemon

Cleaning house for Susans wedding,

Eichers save the worst bedroom for last
BY LOVINA EICHER
We are wrapping up the month of
June. The year 2016 is now already
halfway done. Amazing how time seems
to go faster and faster. The wedding
for Mose and Susan is only five weeks
away. Its getting too close way too fast
for me!
We still want to make noodles for the
wedding, and there is still a lot of cleaning that needs to be done. Sisters Verena
and Susan were helping us Saturday.
The girls bedrooms upstairs are all
cleaned. We saved the worst for last: the
boys bedroom. I have been organizing
in there. After the wedding, Benjamin
will move into Susans bedroom. Joseph
and Benjamin share a lot of the same
clothes. We are separating the clothes
so half of them can get moved into
Benjamins bedroom. Susan has quite a
bit of her own furniture in her bedroom,
so the room will look empty.
As of now, Mose and Susan plan to
make living quarters in a small part of
our pole building until they find a place
suitable for them to live. I am happy
Susan wont be moving off the property
yet. She and Mose both will be working,
and this way she wont have to keep a
house going.
After Joe and I were married, we
lived with my dad and mom until
Elizabeth was born. We then moved into
a trailer house across the driveway until
after Susan was born. We then moved to
a place about two and a half miles from
there. That is where we lived until our
move to Michigan in 2004.
Now it is 2016, and daughter Loretta
will be sixteen on July 1. We will have
pizza and ice cream cake tomorrow
evening in honor of her birthday. Loretta
and Lovina share a bedroom. Loretta
doesnt like anything out of place, and
her bed is made every day. Lovina gets
annoyed at the neatness and is learning
fast that her end of the room has to stay
cleaned up as well. If I let things
clutter up too much, Loretta takes over
cleaning up my things. Its good to have
someone stay organized after working
in the boys bedroom. I teased them

Cover crops following

wheat harvest
BY JAMES HOORMAN
Ag Educator
OSU Extension
Putnam County

With wheat almost harvested, farmers should be

thinking about planting
cover crops to improve
soil health. The four major
types of cover crops include
grasses, legumes, brassica
and others. Grasses tend to
accumulate nutrients with
their fibrous root system and
generally make phosphorus
more available. They generally have a higher carbon to
nitrogen (C:N) ratio. Major
grasses include oats, cereal
rye, annual ryegrass, Sudansorghum, and barley. These
grasses are often grown
before soybeans, may absorb
left over nitrogen from fertilizer or manure, are good
erosion fighters, make good
forage, and reduce soil compaction. Wheat is not recommended as a cover crop due
to disease potential if planted
before the fly-free date and it
is hard to kill.
Cereal rye (wide leaf) is a
winter annual, germinates at
30F, improves soil compaction, and suppresses weeds.
Annual rye (narrow leaf) is a
winter annual with a tremendous root system but may
be hard to kill in spring.
Sorghum Sudan is a summer annual that dies with
the first frost so it needs to
be seeded immediately after
wheat harvest. With 90-100#
N, Sorghum Sudan may add
0.5% soil organic matter.
Mow or chop after it grows 3
feet tall to promote tillering
with 5-9X more root growth
after cutting.
Oats winter kills with
temperatures below 20F, has
good root growth, easy to
plant and manage, and no
need for herbicide in spring.
Triticale (winter annual) and
Teff (summer annual) are

good cover crops for forages. Barley (winter annual)

makes excellent cattle feed
for forage or grain. Barley
may be harvested 2-3 weeks
before wheat and is good for
double crop soybeans. Pearl
Millet (summer annual) is
fast grower, good for short
growing windows, good for
heat or droughty conditions
and excellent for grazing or
forage value.
Legumes are great producers of nitrogen, have a
large taproot, and are generally grown before corn.
Austrian winter peas (inoculated) are planted early in
August growing 5 feet long
but generally die with frost,
however they add 100-120#N
to soil. Windham winter peas
(inoculated) can be planted
later, generally survive winter, and if allowed to grow
in spring, can accumulate
75-100#N. Cowpeas is planted after wheat, need very
little moisture to germinate,
grow well in summer heat
but die with frost. Cowpeas
may accumulate 125-135 #N
if inoculated and work well
in mixtures because they are
shade tolerant. Sunn hemp
(summer annual) may get
10-15 feet tall with yellow
flowers, and may produce
200#N (marble size nodules
if inoculated), works well in
mixture, but dies with frost.
Crimson clover works
well in mixtures with oilseed
radish (same size seed). If
inoculated, crimson clover
can produce 100-125#N but
needs to be planted in August
or early September to maximize growth. Crimson clover
should survive most winters
and should be allowed to
grow as long as possible in
spring to maximize N potential (bright red crimson flower). Red Clover tolerates wet
soils and can be frost seeded
into wheat in late winter,
producing 75-100# N but has

a higher C:N ratio so it takes

longer to release N than other
legumes. Sweet Clover has a
deep tap root, tolerates wet
soils, produces 125-200#N,
improves soil drainage and
suppresses weeds. Works
well in red clover or alsike
mixtures and may also be
frost seeded into wheat.
Brassicas include oilseed
(Daikon- white root) radishes, turnips, kale, and rape
are good for reducing soil
compaction, kill or suppressing broadleaf weeds, and
they accumulate soil nutrients (N-P-K). Radishes die
at 15F and can have nasty
smell when they decompose.
They fumigate the soil, may
help reduce slugs, and promote earthworms. The root
is 80% water and decays
quickly when soils warm up.
Radishes grow well under
cooler wetter conditions in
late summer and early fall
and works well in cover crop
mixtures. Turnips are a winter annual with shorter taproot and bulb that can be
grazed. Kale and rape/canola
(winter annuals) are small
seeded cover crops that
grow fast in fall under cooler
soil temperatures. Kale has
a high protein content (2025%) which wildlife love to
eat.
Other cover crops include
buckwheat, a summer annual, good for surface compaction, is great for attracting beneficial insects and
honey bees, often used in
mixtures. Sunflowers (summer annuals) loosen soils,
work well in mixtures with
peas or climbing cover
crops, and attract bees and
beneficial insects. All cover
crops improve soil health,
absorb excess soil nutrients,
increase soil organic matter,
protect the soil from soil
erosion, and many reduce
soil pests.

and said we are going to put Loretta in

charge of cleaning their bedroom. They
said she would probably call their treasures junk.
Tomorrow we are invited to the wedding of one of Joes coworkers, Joseph
and Edna. We wont be able to attend
but appreciate the invitation. Another of
Joes coworkers, Jerry, was married to
Diane on June 16. We were all invited
but unable to attend. We wish Gods
blessings to both young couples. May
they have a long and happy married life
together, letting God lead their way.
Today is Joes last day in the factory
until July 11. His vacation wont be
much of a vacation, though, with the
upcoming wedding to prepare for. We
will take a few days off and take the
whole family up north for a few days.
Ill write more about that next week.
Saturday, July 2, Joes sister Christine
and Jake have Joes family gathering at
their house. They live around three
hours from here in Hersey, Michigan.
Last Sunday, Jacob and sister Emma
and family, my sisters Verena and
Susan, and Timothy and Elizabeth were
all here for a fish fry, with Joe cooking.
He also made French fries. Verena and
Susan each brought a salad, and Emma
and Elizabeth brought desserts, so it was
an easy lunch for me. We set up tables
on the porch to eat. The men and boys
enjoyed playing croquet in the afternoon
while the rest of us just visited and
relaxed.
Our cucumbers are really getting
ready fast. We are enjoying cucumber
salad a lot. Ill share this recipe with
you. May God bless each of you always!

Cucumbers are the crop of

choice in Lovinas garden right
now, and this week she shares
a favorite recipe for cucumber
salad. (Submitted photo)

Seventh-inning lifts
Knights by Blue Jays

CONVOY St. Johns and Crestview were locked in a

typical ACME Baseball Congress pitchers duel involving
two teams in a win-or-go-home clash Wednesday afternoon at
Crestview Sports Complex, tied at 1-1 at the end of six frames.
The Knights the visitors on the scoreboard then put up
a 3 spot in the top of the seventh and reliever Derek Stout shut
the door in the bottom half to grab a 4-1 victory.
The Knights move on to Sundays Elida District, with the
seed depending on their game versus Van Wert later in the
evening.
With lefty ace Jacob Youngpeter on in his fourth inning
of relief for the Blue Jays, ninth hitter Dylan Hicks blooped
a 1-out single to right and Alec Ingram pinch-ran. Kaden
Hurless grounded a hit into left and Zech Zimerman legged
out an infield hit to the hole at short to load the bases. An out
later, Luke Gerardot slapped a bases-clearing double over the
head of leftfielder Tony Sanders and Lance Camp pinch-ran as
Ethan Linder was summoned to the hill. He popped up Brant
Richardson for the third out.
Sanders greeted Stout in the home seventh with a slap down
the left-field line but the next three guys fanned to end the Jays
season and send the Knights on.
Buddy Jackson walked against Crestview starter Spencer
Rolsten with two down in the home first.
The Knights got to St. Johns starter Eric Vogt for a 1-0
edge in the upper second. Gerardot slapped a hit to right, stole
second and scored on Richardsons liner to right center. He
burgled second and took third on an error on Derek Biros
grounder. Biro promptly played thief of second but both runners remained where they were.
The Jays tried to answer in the home half on a 1-out single
to right by Youngpeter. However, he was erased on a Troy
Schwinnen grounder. Schwinnen burgled second but Sanders
bounced out to short.
Payton Knittle greeted Youngpeter with an infield single to
first in the Crestview fourth, advanced on a passed ball and an
error on a 1-out grounder by Jacob Painter. He stole second but
both runners again remained stranded as Youngpeter sent down
the next eight batters.
With two down in the lower fourth, Youngpeter legged out
an infield hit to short but was erased on a Schwinnen grounder.
Aaron Reindel was hit by a pitch with two outs in the St.
Johns fifth and swiped second but went no farther.
The Jays (11-10) tied it in the home sixth on a leadoff liner
to center by Jackson, a double to left center by Vogt and a 1-out
sacrifice fly to left center by Youngpeter. Schwinnen popped
up to third to end the frame at 1-1 and sent up the seventh-inning heroics by Crestview.
I am so proud of these guys and had more fun than I ever
had in the number of years I have coached youth baseball.
They have played 40 to 50 games in the spring and summer
and we just ran out of arms; they gutted it out, St. Johns
ACME head coach Jim Warnecke said. One of the things you
try to do in ACME is see who you might have step up over the
summer for varsity next spring and we were very surprised at
some of the kids that did. (Head spring) Coach Jerry (Jackson)
and I talked a lot this summer about the kids we feel will be
able to step in open spots next spring.

Tale of holiday past

Nancy Spencer

The national
On the
dance experience Other Hand
Whew! The past several days have
just flown by! The awesome Kiwanis
Fourth of July Celebration took up my
weekend and beyond and then a big
newspaper production day on Tuesday
kept me on the straight and narrow.
Wednesday afternoon I took off for
Kalahari and Lotuss Starquest National
Dance Competition. As I said last week,
I have watched her dance on the live
feed from the event but never in person.
What a difference it makes! While I kept
from outright crying, because that would
just be weird and embarrassing in front
of so many people, I did tear up and my
heart was in my throat as she danced,
twirled and jumped her way to the highest honor of the week Miss Starquest!
I am so proud of her and glad I got to see
her dance the entry that brought her the
title. I couldnt stay for the actual Elite
8 dance-off Thursday evening but Im
pretty sure they could hear us cheering
clear up in Sandusky.
My husband has attended her nationals for the last four years and we talk and
text a lot while he there so I had a vague
idea of what I was going to be doing but
there is nothing that could have prepared

me for the feeling I got while she was on

stage. Beautiful! I can see why he enjoys
going so much.
Its also a hectic, run here, run there
time. Sometimes theres just a few minutes between dances and Lotus has to
race back to the dressing room and
change her costume, her hair piece,
shoes, etc.
You should see the tackle box they
cart around with them. Its huge. Inside
is everything you could or would ever
need for dance. Extra tights, super glue,
extra makeup, athletic tape, scissors,
bandages, ibuprofen and it goes on and
on as you open the different drawers and
compartments. Every dancer has one in
addition to all their costumes, hair pieces, shoes, etc. It takes an army just to
haul all that stuff around.
My sister-in-law, Dawn, and I had
a few minutes when I first arrived
Wednesday so we weaved our way
through Kalahari to a cozy little restaurant for a bite to eat. The first of the day
for me. I was starving. While we were
waiting on our food, I gave her a birthday card from my husband and I and we
chatted. Our food took so long we ended

up having them package it up to go and

off we went, racing back to the dressing
room to make sure Lotus was ready and
had everything she needed. The food
was forgotten as made our way into the
dance hall.
When Lotus took the stage I was
mesmerized. I know shes my niece and
Im quite biased but shes good.
We met her back in the dressing room
after her performance and she was not
happy with her dance. I didnt notice
anything off but she is hyper-critical of
herself and I guess if you want to be the
best, thats the way it has to be.
She quickly changed for next number and this went on the rest of the
afternoon into evening. When the last
dance was over, we all made our way
in for awards or AWAAAAARRRRDS!
as the announcer said. Lotus received
platinum-plus on all her dances the
highest score possible. So proud.
On Thursday morning, a group dance
from her studio called Swing received
Best Overall. Seemed to be a trend.
I have a feeling the Colleys will be
pleased with years showing. I know the
Spencers already are.

One of the best things

about a long (but too short)
weekend is waking up on
Saturday in a panic because
the alarm didnt sound, realizing why and hitting the pillow
again. Or, and this is usually
the case for me, getting up
just because I can.
Such was the case on the
first Saturday in July. I know
this wasnt so for everyone,
but it was for me and I revel
in that. There is no sleeping
in at our place, not with a
Anne Coburn-Griffis
hungry potbelly knocking at
the front door. But on weekends like this, morning chores happen and the shorts or sweats
remain the fashion of the day afterward.
Saturday meant a trip to the Bluffton farmers market.
Pandoras Dave Hilty sells flowers and bulbs and a smattering
of vegetables there until sweet corn comes on in July. Across
the blacktop, Carol Geiger sells her spreadables and breads. A
British-accented man whose name I do not know sells greens,
including sorrel. We buy two bunches of this most visits as
Lucy the donkey loves the lemony leaves.
We bought caramel corn laced with rosemary and perused
that sellers parsley plants. When told that swallowtail butterfly caterpillars love the stuff, three plants made their way into
our bag. A sprig or two may make their way into salads.
As I worked the soil at home, giving lavender, comfrey
and coneflowers a much-needed weeding, the goats and turkeys gobbled up the discards as fast as I could pitch them to
the other side of the gate. The chickens picked off a hoard of
Japanese beetles from a pulled patch of Canadian thistle.
Teamwork is a glorious thing, especially when all the players can catch a nap afterward with nowhere they need to be
anytime soon.

Change unlike anything weve seen

Lets start with this premise:
Theres a better way to do everything. Were on a quest to reinvent the way we live, work and
play.
Our brightest minds, engineers
and researchers are inventing
new and improved ways of doing
things that are changing the landscape of the future. The future is
only limited by our imagination.
Each new way of doing something has unintended consequences and throws new questions at us
that need answers.
For most of us simple folk,
the world as we knew it ended
in 2010. Everything we considered sacred and final is now up
for review and will likely be
transformed and reinvented in the
next 20 years.
Everywhere you look, the
cardinal rules are being broken.
Think about it. You dont dare
say: but thats the way weve
always done it. Or, weve never
done it that way. Or, even if
that was possible, people will
never accept it. Say those words
and youll probably be laughed
at and looked at with disdain.
New technology is changing the
economics of every facet of our
lives.
The World Economic Forum
puts it this way: We stand on
the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally
alter the way we live, work and
relate to one another. In its scale,
scope and complexity, the transformation will be unlike any-

thing humankind has experienced

before.
Everywhere we turn today
someone is breaking the rules.
Try to think of some tradition,
some standard, some iconic way
we live that isnt undergoing a
challenge by radical new ideas
and methods based on never
before considered concepts.
The key is finding things that
people want and will pay money
for. Better yet, there are products
and services that promise to save
people time and money. Inventors
are thinking outside the box.
You may see this revolution
referred to as disruptive innovation or collaborative consumption or sharing economy.
Many inventors are obsessed with
utilizing excess capacity.
Let me say it again: There is
a better way to do everything.
That better way will be uncovered in a matter of time. Were
obsessed with taking crazy ideas
and turning them into successes.
Some say millennials are driving the revolution in connectivity,
content and community. Its like
they see nothing worth saving
from the past 50 years. Older
millennials, those between 25-34,
are the most likely to use e-commerce. Youll recognize millennials everywhere, they are the ones
with their faces buried in their
Smartphones.
Online shopping is a real threat
to the traditional bricks-and-mortar retail industry. The 2015 holiday season sales represented 28%

of total online sales, but that was

only 8% of total retail sales. But
the trend is towards online sales,
in a big way.
There is a TV commercial that
shows a 50-year-old father having lunch with his millennial son.
The father wonders if his son
(who looks older and wiser in his
new glasses) has thought about
making some investments now
that he is gainfully employed.
The father offers to introduce
the son to his long-time, trusted
financial adviser. The son wonders if you have to pay the adviser if his advise results in a loss
of capital. Yes, of course, thats
the way the world works, the dad
laughs with a smirk at the sons
nave thought.
The son replies: Are you sure
about thatthe world is changing.
*******
An article in the June 22 Wall
Street Journal illustrates how
work-place rules are being challenged by both young and old
employees.
For generations, the standard
etiquette was giving at least two
weeks notice when quitting or
leaving a job. It was considered a
courtesy and a sign of respect. An
employer may decide to have the
employee leave immediately, but
with a two-week severance.
Today, according to the article,
many young employees feel they
are not obligated to give notice.
Many feel they have been overworked and unappreciated after

years of labor. Because of corporate greed, they have suffered pay

cuts, benefit reductions and have
lacked job security.
Because loyalty is a two-way
street, these young workers feel
they are justified in breaking
the rules, especially when they
have landed better jobs at another
company.
*******
Rule breakers have taken aim
at the communications and entertainment industries. Who could
have predicted the total transformation of these industries and
the advent of the Social Media
revolution?
As dramatic as the changes
have already been, we still dont
know what we dont know about
the future and how the digital
media will evolve in entertainment, news and social media
companies. Whats popular today
may not even exist 10 years from
now.
According to Nielsen, people
ages 18 to 24 are spending nearly
30% less time watching TV now
than they were in 2012. The drop
is 18% among people 24 to 35.
They have cut the cable-TV cord
and spend more time on social
media and watching online video.
The entertainment industries are reinventing themselves.
Industry watchers say media companies who ignore the business
models of YouTube, Snapchat
and Facebook live at their own
peril. The trends are not a fad.
The trends are real and its only

Making lifesaving drugs more affordable

BY US SENATOR
SHERROD BROWN
Because of the Affordable Care
Act, weve made progress in lowering
the cost of prescription drugs. Weve
expanded coverage to nearly 20 million
Americans and were on track to close
the Medicare Part D donut hole by
2020.
But too many Ohioans still struggle
to afford essential medicines that treat
diseases like cancer and arthritis. Every
day, my office gets calls and letters
from Ohioans who cannot afford their
prescription drugs. They are forced to
choose between their medicines and
other necessities.
Some of these drugs are known as
biologics, which are made using living organisms. And their prices are often
sky-high, due in part to a lack of competition. Right now, this class of drugs
has the longest exclusivity period of
any pharmaceuticals on the market
meaning the drug companies that hold
the original drug patent can sell it at

high prices for years, without facing any

competition.
Not only do the drugs enter the market with exorbitant prices, but manufacturers are also able to raise prices year
after year. The biologic Gleevec is used
to treat several types of cancer and came
on the market in 2001 priced at $26,400
per year. Today it costs $120,000. But
other companies are prohibited from
making similar drugs at a lower cost.
This has a chilling effect on innovation, limits competition, and prevents
other companies from developing and
marketing similar drugs, known as biosimilars, which are as safe and effective
as biologic drugs.
In the same way that generic drugs
entering the market have helped increase
competition and make prescription drugs
more affordable, allowing biosimilars
to come on the market faster would
increase competition and make these
lifesavings drugs more affordable.
So Ive introduced a bill to do just
that.
Last month, I joined my colleagues

to introduce the Price Relief, Innovation

and Competition for Essential Drugs, or
PRICED, Act. It would lower drug prices by reducing the market exclusivity
awarded to drug companies for biologics
from 12 years to seven years.
That means drug companies will lose
their monopoly power in nearly half the
time, fostering competition and helping
to increase options and make drugs more
affordable for Ohioans.
According to the latest estimate from
the Department of Health and Human
Services, this would save the federal
government alone which spends huge
amounts on biologics through Medicare
and Medicaid some $6.9 billion over
the next 10 years. This legislation would
save taxpayers billions, and bring more
affordable drugs onto the market.
Ohioans facing serious and chronic illnesses like diabetes, arthritis, and
cancer should not have to worry that
the cost of drugs will bankrupt them or
keep them from getting the treatment
they need.

People Make
the Difference
going to get more crazy and volatile as the future goes from TV to
online video and other still-in-development digital formats.
You may know millennials
who dont have a TV in their
home. They get by with their
phones and tablets. They refuse
to pay for cable or satellite services when they can get commercial-free entertainment from
Netflix and can stream pirated
copies of shows online.
These rule-breaking rebels can
text, use Twitter and get everything they want via social media
like Facebook. They tell me they
download ad-blocking software
on laptops and smartphones. If
they want to watch or access
advertising or product information they can do it when it suits
them.
They make a good point. If
you subscribe to cable or satellite TV for entertainment, why
should you be forced to watch
endless hours of commercials for
products you dont need or want?
They download apps that allow
them to skip ads, block ads or
avoid them entirely.
Mega marketers are fighting
back. They pay content producers
of their favorite shows, movies
and sporting events to incorporate product placement in the
action. Just watch. Your favorite
college and professional teams
and athletes will soon be walking
billboards.

Letter to the Editor

Respecting law and order

DEAR EDITOR:
When we talk about being proud to be an American we
rightfully talk about freedom and liberty, but there is something else we take for granted. Law and order make it possible
to live and pursue these important ideals. None of us would
live under tyranny or anarchy by choice; and this is something
the founding fathers (in their wisdom) understood. What is
most concerning today is the cycle of violence and breakdown
in law and order occurring today in our great country. Look
at the assaults (by criminals and prosecutors) on our first
responders; domestic terrorism, and lack of respect and personal responsibility. When we question the safety of traveling to
other parts of our country (let alone other countries) and even
shopping in a local mall because of the lack of Law and Order,
it is time to be very concerned. So please thank and support
your friends in the military and all of the first responders who
protect our very neighborhoods. God bless America.

The Stadium Club recently presented
a check for $35,000 to the Delphos
Kiwanis for the Splash Pad Project.
The Stadium Club submitted a request
to the Mueller-Scherger Foundation
on behalf of the Kiwanis. To date,
the Mueller-Scherger Foundation has
given the Stadium Club $336,000 in

the total raised for the splash pad
to $180,000. Donations can be made
online at delphoskiwanis.com or mailed
to Kiwanis Splash Pad, PO Box 173,
Delphos OH 45833. The Kiwanis have

Church

Chickens

(Continued from page 1)

The church is starting off at the home
of Roger Wurst, 744 Liberty St. in Van
Wert. Wurst himself is not a biker and does
not own a bike, but he said he fits in to the
congregation of the church.
You dont have to be a biker to come
here, as long as you got clothes on, youre
going to fit, Haskins said.
Haskins has been a pastor since the mid
1990s. He has traveled to biker parties and
clubhouses to reach out to bikers through
his ministry. He has officiated weddings
and funerals, he has visited people in the
hospital and in jail, any one who needed
spiritual guidance, Haskins has been there
to help.
This is a church Van Wert has dreamed
about for years, Haskins said. This is for
whosoever, everybody is welcome.
He has visited biker churches in Dayton
and Greenville, which is the closest one to
Van Wert.
Theyre positive, Haskins said. Lots
of people are coming. They play Christian
rock music, its a relaxed atmosphere to
come and learn about God, learn about good
things, but its more of a relaxed atmosphere
where people arent judging you.
The location of Van Wert is a major reason so many are supporting the movement
because it is in a central location between

Fort Wayne, Defiance and Lima.

Through years and years and years
of work we have a lot of people behind
this movement, behind this new church,
Haskins said.
Haskins, Wurst and a group of board
members have been meeting some Friday
nights to discuss plans for the church. They
have made plans for the first years social
calendar including plenty of events in the
cooler months when bikers will be at home
and not on their motorcycles as much.
Ideas include a chili party, Super Bowl
party, Ohio State game day party and more.
For Wurst, this is not the first church he
and his wife have helped start in their home.
Everybody has a calling in their life
and this is our calling, to launch churches,
he said. We do more of the behind the
scenes while he (Haskins) is out ministering bikers and bike clubs, somebody has
to be behind the scenes to set up the music,
to set up the churches, to help design the
church, to get T-shirts printed, business
cards printed - all the items that you normally take for granted.
Wurst explained that he and his wifes
behind-the-scenes work allows for the pastors to go out and develop their ministry.
Wurst offers his living room with 50
chairs set up as the church.
Most houses dont have that, so we just
feel that this is our calling to launch these

churches, Wurst said. Weve launched

four of them in town and three of them are
still going. After we launch them and get
them established, we back away and they
take over. What they do after that is out of
our hands.
A main aspect of whether the churches
do well are how willing the pastor and the
congregation are to work to build up the
church a commitment that Haskins feels
he has already started on.
Were going to be involved in the
community as a church, Haskins said.
This is a church where we are going to be
out in the wind and dragging the nets and
bringing them in.
Up to this point, Haskins has been going
out to the bikers.
We understand because of how we minister to bikers we have to go as Christ said,
Go ye into all the world, Haskins said.
We have to go to their parties, we have to
go where theyre at. We have to invite them
to come our way and in the biker world, you
have to go first and sow that seed in order for
them to come your way.
If you can establish a bridge, a pastor,
a ministry to their nation, to the people and
they find out youre real and what your
offering is real, theyll come, he added.
The public is invited to attend the first
service at 10 a.m. July 17 at 744 Liberty
Street, Van Wert.

Lichtensteiger also urged everyone to email the ODA with
their petition, noting that the more people wrote, the better the
chances of getting a second hearing.
The commissioners received notice from the Ohio
Department of Agriculture in January and as required, placed
a notice in The Times Bulletin. Owens noted that the office is
often focused on regulatory requirements but adding that he
wished now that he had read the notice more closely.
All the Commissioners and Trustees were required to do is
sign off that they received the notification and to put a notice in
the countys largest public newspaper. Owens said he accepts
full responsibility for the missed opportunity to keep the community more fully informed and he and the other commissioners Lichtensteiger and Todd Wolfrum, who was also present
would also work toward getting the second public hearing.
Simindinger said this was as more of a moral issue than a
business issue and explained that to the trustees. He and the
other residents are concerned about the quality of the water,
home values and the quality of life in general with the presence
of a factory farm of these dimensions. Simindinger said this
wasnt a farm with 500 cattle on it, it was humongous.
Residents are also concerned about the future as well. What
will it be like in the township in five years? Rider mentioned in
particular the Allen County Combined Aquifer, which received
federal protection in 1992.
Another meeting for concerned residents will be held 7 p.m.
Tuesday at the church in Monticello.
Disclaimer: I live in the area affected by the installation of
the chicken farm.
