PROTECTMOVOTERS.ORG

Welcome
to #NN16!

Welcome to Netroots Nation 2016! Each year, nearly 3,000

activists and organizers from around the country (and beyond)
come together for a few sleep-deprived, action-packed days.
If this is your first Netroots Nation, we want you to know
that this is a place for sharing ideas and connecting. Its a
place to learn from each other and to uplift and affirm one
another.
Its also a place to be challenged.
The direct action that took place at last years Netroots
Nation challenged many of usincluding the presidential
candidates who were on stageto listen and speak up about
the systemic racism and oppression experienced by far too
many Black men, women and children today.
Listening and speaking up is important, but its not enough.
As progressives, we should be digging deeper and asking
ourselves some tough questions, too. Questions like: How
can I support those who are fighting for liberation? and
What can I do to help shatter systems of oppression?
For those of you on the front lines of this fight, we see you
and we stand with you. And to our LGBTQ brothers and
sisters: Just weeks after the horrifying attack on the LGBT
community in Orlandoon Latinx nightwe want you to
know that we mourn with you. And we as a community will
fight with you.
Liberation for one must be liberation for all. That's why
racial justice is front and center in our agenda this year.
Youll find sessions calling out the policies that cemented
the racism thats still prevalent today, as well as panels that
highlight the powerful organizing being done around the
country in the Movement for Black Lives.

Youll also find lots of content that challenges us to reject

the status quo and build a better movementone thats free
of patriarchy, racism and sexism and centered around the
lives and experiences of the most marginalized.
Youll find panels that cover the usual breadth of progressive
issues and hands-on trainingsmore than 40 of themthat
provide concrete skills you can take back home and apply to
your work. And youll have a chance to learn about and support
the work of local organizers on issues like racial justice and
voting rights.
We feel its just as important to consider which voices are
elevated as whats being said. Thats why the speakers youll
hear from this weekend make up our most diverse group ever:
65 percent are people of color and 65 percent are women.
Thirty-five percent of our panelists are Black, a 17 percent
increase over last year.
You may notice some other changes, too. Instead of prescheduling caucuses, weve decided to open up a number of
rooms and time slots to youthe communityto organize
as you wish. And on the keynote stage, youll have a chance
to dig deep into environmental justice, reproductive justice
and racial justice with sessions organized not by us as staff,
but by those doing the work.
Whether this is your first Netroots Nation or youve been
to every single one, we hope you experience things this
weekend that both challenge you and inspire you to fight
a little harder.

and the Netroots Nation staff

THINGS TO DO IN THE LOU

Local picks
Want to see some of St. Louis during your down time? Got some free
time after the convention winds down? Here are a few suggestions :

The NATIONAL BLUES MUSEUM (615 Washington Avenue, nationalbluesmuseum.org)

pays tribute to the musicians who created Americas roots music and St. Louis
signature sound. Located next door to the Americas Center convention complex,
the newly opened museum features artifacts, interactive exhibits and special
programming that brings the blues to life.

TOP: FOREST PARK, ABOVE: CITY MUSEUM

The CITY MUSEUM (750 North 16th Street, citymuseum.org) reveals a hands-on world
of recycled, artsy fun where kids and adults can climb, slide, create and play in a
giant warehouse of adventure.
As the nations tallest monument, the GATEWAY ARCH (11 North 4th Street) has
welcomed visitors for 50 years with its iconic, awe-inspiring shape. The vision
of architect Eero Saarinen, the Arch celebrates Thomas Jefferson and St. Louis
role in the westward expansion of the United States.
Understanding the economy comes to life in a dynamic way at the INSIDE THE
ECONOMY MUSEUM (One Federal Reserve Bank Plaza, stlouisfed.org/economymuseum).
The free museum immerses visitors in interactive exhibits, games and videos that
cover everything from inflation to the global economy.
Take an afternoon walk at CITYGARDEN (801 Market Street, citygardenstl.org), an
urban oasis that brings together lush landscape, meandering walkways and world
renowned sculpture accentuated by water, stone and architecture. You wont find
walls, fences, admission fees or do not touch signs here.
FOREST PARK (forestparkforever.org), is St. Louis big backyard. Home to amazing

natural areas, restored historic landmarks, hundreds of species of wildlife and

endless opportunities for recreation, this 1,300-acre park attracts more than
13 million visitors each year.

Learning Opportunities

Netroots Nation is a place for:

How to Have a Conversation About Race Without Everyone

Running Out of the Room

Welcome to Netroots Nation! Each year, nearly 3,000 activists

and organizers from around the country (and beyond!) come
together to connect, share and learn.

Sharing ideas and experiences

Connecting with others in the movement
Learning from each other and sharing best practices
Uplifting and affirming each other
Netroots Nation is NOT a place for:
Personal attacks or put-downs
Hostility, threats or harassment
Any use of threats or violence is NOT permitted and will
result in the immediate revocation of credentials.
We encourage freedom of expression, including the right to
peacefully protest, and recognize that such actions can be
vital to shifting the political conversation. At the same time,
we aim to ensure that all attendees can take full advantage
of all opportunities available at this conference.
If a protest is disruptive or sustained, we reserve the right
to relocate the action to another space so the program can
continue.

How You Can Help

We aim to create an affirming and inclusive space where

every attendee is valued and respected. Creating such a space
is a group responsibility. Here are a few ways you can help:
During social events and discussions, encourage others to
join in. Keep an empty chair or open space in your circle for
newcomers to help them feel welcome.
Make space for others in your conversations. If you notice
people dominating a discussion, ask for feedback from
quieter attendees.
Cut one another some slack. Not everyone comes from the
same shared knowledge base or social framework.
Aim to learn from differences of perspective. Ask questions
and share insights with an open heart.
Avoid dismissing the ideas of others, even if they do not
align with your personal beliefs.

Our agenda features a number of trainings and panels that

challenge us all to create a truly inclusive movement. Be sure
to check out these sessions:

Moving Beyond White Guilt: How to Talk to Whites about

Systemic Racism
Rejecting the Pale, Male and Stale Leadership Pipeline:
A Roadmap to Building Inclusive Organizations
Moving into Action: Raising the Bar for Co-conspirators
The Progressive Movement Has a Sexual Assault and
Harassment Problem. Now What?
Forming Your Squad: Fighting Gender Bias in the Progressive
Tech/Data Space
Living and Working Our Values: Dismantling Rape Culture
in Progressive Spaces and Ending Sexual Harassment and
Violence at Work
We also have several rooms blocked out for self-organizing.
These rooms can be used for caucuses, roundtable discussions
or small group sessions and can be designated as open sessions
or closed spaces. Just look for the sign-up board outside rooms
230/231/232 to reserve a room and time.

LGBTQPOC Chill Space

For the first year ever, there will be an LGBTQ people of

color (POC) safe space for the duration of the conference.
The LGBTQPOC Chill Space welcomes LGBTQ people
of color for coffee, snacks and drinks throughout the conference. The broader community and allies are invited for
curated conversations critical to LGBTQPOC communities
every night at 5:30 p.m. The LGBTQPOC Chill Space will
provide a safe space for queer, bi and trans people of color to
heal and grieve with each other after #Orlando, while also
providing a space to self-organize further solidarity among
LGBTQIA leaders of color via a new LGBTQPOC only
mailing list, Slack channel and Facebook group.
The LGBTQPOC Chill Space is co-sponsored by The BiNet
USA Bi Stories Project, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance/
Institute for Asian Pacific American Leadership & Advancement,
QPEN, The Strength in Numbers Project, and the Working Families
Party People of Color Caucus.

COMMUNITY GUIDELINES

Ground Rules

Protecting low-income taxpayers

from injustice in our tax code.

Exposing corruption in the tax

system and its enforcement.

Join the Revolution

www.TaxRevolution.us

Netroots Nation is committed to creating a safe, inclusive

space for all our attendeesregardless of sexual orientation,
gender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion, age, physical
limitations, immigration status or economic status. We strive
to create a community grounded in solidarity, equality and
respect.
It is our collective responsibility to ensure that each member
of that community feels welcomed and respected. Harassment,
discrimination, violence and bigotry create feelings of fear,
uneasiness, humiliation and discomfort. Even if our actions
are not intentionally hurtful, what we say and do can hurt
others or make them feel uncomfortable.

We want our attendees to have a great time, but please

remember that sexual consent is always essential. And if
you use alcohol, please do so safely. Alcohol use is never an
excuse to disrespect, harass or harm others, and someone
who is intoxicated may not be able to give their consent.
If you need to report an incident to the police, please call
the St. Louis Police Department at 314-231-1212. You can
also call RAINNs National Sexual Assault Hotline at
800-656-HOPE (4673), and SurvJustice.org provides legal
guidance to survivors of sexual violence.
Netroots Nation reserves the right to revoke, without refund,
the credential of any attendee not in compliance with this policy.

Sexual harassment is a form of sexual violence. Sexual

harassment is any unwanted attention of a sexual nature.
Examples may include remarks about another persons
appearance or dress, unwanted flirtations, touching someone without their permission, unwanted sexual pressure,
verbal abuse and name calling.

Bi/Pan/Fluid/Queer (Bi+) Etiquette

Being openly supportive of the bisexual community helps
create a space where we can all be our full selves. Here are
some pointers on being an ally:
Use inclusive language. Instead of gay rights or gay
marriage try equal rights and marriage equality.
Respect peoples privacy and boundaries. Accept you might
never fully understand someone elses sexuality, and thats OK.
Recognize that bisexuality is often invisibilized/delegitimized,
so bi/pan/fluid people usually have to come out over and
over, sometimes to the same people. And many face similar
discrimination and obstacles as gays and lesbians with regard
to issues like job security, healthcare and adoption.
Keep in mind that bisexual transgender individuals can
experience intersections between biphobia and transphobia
and also report higher levels of violence, poverty and poorer
health in their lifetimes.
Do not insist that a gender non-conforming/trans person
or their partners must discard their bisexual identity label
and use another label. Do not accuse someone of being
transphobic or non inclusive of transgender and gender non
conforming people for using the label bisexual. This harms
and erases trans/gender non-conforming bisexuals.
Recognize the way that specific relationships function is
independent of sexual orientation. Be positive about all
relationshipsmonogamous, polyamorous, or anything else.

Transgender Etiquette

Please do not assume anyones gender, even people you may

have met in the past. A persons external appearance may
not match their internal gender identity. Pay attention to
a persons purposeful gender expression. Its polite to ask:
What pronoun do you prefer? or How do you identify?
before using pronouns or gendered words. Or better yet, ask
for their name.
One way of acknowledging transgender peoples needs is to
designate restrooms as gender neutral. In bathrooms, many
transgender people face harassment, so please let everyone
pee in peace.
We have designated some bathrooms in the Convention
Center as gender neutral. These restrooms are located
on the first floor in the back of the Town Square near
concessions. On the second floor there are two sets, one
behind Room 232 and the other in front of Room 220.
Please listen to transgender peoples needs and stories when
they are volunteered; yet please respect peoples privacy and
boundaries and do not ask unnecessary questions.
Lets join the many hardworking allies who are working
to respond appropriately to transphobic situations. Respectful allies who learn from and with transgender people and
then educate others are important for successful transgender
liberation.

Donald Trumps candidacy threatens our communities and
our values, and we must respond to him and what he is stoking
as suchwith a nonviolent movement grounded in love and

near the White House.

This election, with progressive partners across the nation,

MoveOn members will work to ensure that there will never be
a President Trump, and perhaps even more importantly, make
clear to every other politician and every person in the United
States that racist, misogynist demagoguery is a dead-end
political strategy that most Americans reject.

The Daily Show co-creator and LPJ co-founder Lizz Winstead has
gathered some of the most hilarious comics working today to create
a multimedia comedy show that uses stand-up, sketch and videos to
expose the sexism and anti-abortion extremism that dominates our
political and social landscapes. The LPJ team hilariously reminds us
of the challenges that come with walking the earth with a uterus in
2016. Starring Lizz Winstead, Leah Bonnema (IFCs Comedy Drop),
Joyelle Johnson (Wyatt Cenacs Night Train) and UCB theatres
sketch group Buzz Off, Lucille.

After our first Pub Quiz in 2007, the New York Times Katherine Q.
Seelye apologetically had to explain to her readers that our participants
were not booing Mother Theresa herself; only the fact that almost
no one had correctly identified her as the answer to a question.
For our tenth anniversary quiz, well aim higher. It started as a
simple political trivia contest among friends, but has morphed into
a raucous celebration of our Netroots community. Well supply the
refreshments, prizes, and a lot of good trivia; you bring the teams of
8-10 and the chanting, but please, for the love of God, leave the
vuvuzelas at home. Do not throw away your shot. (Dont have a team?
No problem: theyll form on-site as well.) Sponsored by the DLCC.

The systematic oppression of people of African descent is woven into

the fabric of the United States and its institutions. The uprising in
Ferguson following the killing of Michael Brown was a pivotal moment in
the ongoing movement against Americas system of policing, which is
responsible for the killings of countless Black lives. Join This Week in
Blackness to hear from local and national organizers in Ferguson and
around the country who are working to resist, empower and build.

As activism for police accountability, fair wages, just immigration, and

more takes center stage, social justice movements are using technology
to achieve greater scale and reach wider audiences. In an age of big
data and digital technology, do these strategies build power for longterm social change or are they helping maintain the status quo? Does
the Internet disrupt racism or enforce a new era of Jim Crow?

Climate Justice Strategies: Exploring the

Intersections of Climate Change

The topic of climate change often brings to mind images of melting

glaciers and starving polar bears. For too long weve failed to connect the
direct impact of environmental injustices, including climate change,
on our lives, families, and communities. The effects of climate change
are widespread: people die from exposure to toxins from coal fired
power plants and are sickened from breathing toxic ash from mountain
top removal. Drought and flooding impact the availability of nutritious
food and increase the likelihood that those in flood-prone cities will
lose their homes and livelihoods. And communities of color and lowincome communities are usually hit the hardest.
Join us for a plenary session on the intersection of climate change
and environmental justice and a look at what needs to happen to stem
the effects of climate change for our most vulnerable communities.
Youll hear from Tom Steyer, president of NextGen Climate; Jacqui
Patterson, director of the NAACPs Environmental and Climate
Justice Program; Green for All Executive Director Vien Truong;
and Anthony Rogers-Wright, Policy and Organizing Director for
Environmental Action.

The Digital CultureSHIFT: Moving from

Scale to Power to Achieve Racial Justice

Join us for a plenary roundtable on the digital politics of race as we

discuss these questions and more. Youll hear from leaders on the frontlines of the 21st Century movement for racial justice and civil rights,
including Color of Changes Rashad Robinson, Linda Sarsour
of MPower, Shanelle Matthews of Black Lives Matter, Malkia
Cyril of the Center for Media Justice, and Joe Torres of Free Press.

Not Your Wedge Issue: The State of Abortion

Access and Reproductive Justice

Abortion is not a wedge issue. Abortion is health care, a constitutionally

guaranteed right that for far too many people in far too many states is
now a right in name only. Join us as we explore the state of abortion
access and reproductive justice. Hear from reproductive justice and
abortion rights activists about their work, what's at stake and how we
can move from celebrating compromise as victory to winning.

KEYNOTES

Opening Keynote with This Week in Blackness

S E S S I O N 1 ( T H U R S D AY, 9 1 0 : 1 5 A . M . )
AFT's Student Debt Clinic [Sponsored Panel]
Room 221
In this session, attendees will be educated on the systemic injustices of
our current student debt national crisis. Participants are encouraged to
shift their perspectives and stop seeing student debt as just a personal
issue, but rather a shared national crisis that will require collective
action to address. We'll guide you through enrolling in Income-Driven
Repayment programs and Public Service Loan Forgiveness, two underutilized programs that work in tandem to lower payments and forgive debt.
Ask a Latina
Room 222
In the 2016 election cycle, the Latino and immigrant communities have
been demonized by Donald Trump. However, this framework and racism
has been driving policy in America for generations. Meet Latinas who are
challenging the national discourse and owning perceived wedge issues to
tackle the biggest issues of our time. As the Latino community continues
to grow, something is shifting and we've found power at the intersections.
Hear from some wise Latinas about how to forge a path forward.
#BlackWomenLead: The Role and Importance of
Black Women Organizers
Room 224
From the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement to the impact Black
people have on social media with platforms such as #BlackTwitter to the
rising number of Black women running for office, it is clear that Black
women's work and voices in the progressive movement are monumental
and significant. The discussion will focus on two elementshow Black
women have shaped current social movements such as racial justice,
criminal justice reform and reproductive justice; and how Black women
have emerged as the largest voting bloc in the U.S. Panelists will engage
the audience on why Black women matter in transforming our country.
Climate Messages That Work: We Did the Polling
so You Don't Have To
Room 220
We all know the right messages to get the environmental activist base
on board with taking action on climate change. Now, what are the most
compelling ways to talk to a broader audience to engage them in the
fight for a just transition to a clean energy future? NextGen Climate has
worked with pollsters, researchers and allied organizations to identify
the best messages that work for diverse audiences. By talking about a
just transition to a clean energy future, we know we can broaden the
intersectionality of the climate movement. Come hear from message
experts and organizers from the field as they discuss how we can
broaden our movement through better messaging and engagement.
Defeating Trump: How Our Side Will Unite and
Win the 2016 Presidential Election
Room 223
The Democratic presidential primary has been intense. But nothing
will be more intense, scary, and destructive than a Donald Trump
White House. We all know that. Come hear how our side will unite
and win the 2016 presidential election. Panelists include senior leaders
from the Democratic presidential campaign, SEIU, Progressive Change
Campaign Committee, NARAL, and MoveOn. Folks on both sides of
the democratic primary. People on the inside and outside. If voters hear
our message on wealth inequality, the fight for Black Lives, women's
access to abortion and health services, debt-free college, expanding
Social Security, Wall Street reform, a humane immigration policy,
and fighting Trump's hate-filled agendawe will win.

Galvanizing the Forces: Moving Forward in the Disability

and LGBT Rights Movements
Room 227
We'll explore how three distinct forceslaw, practices on the ground
and social normsmust be deployed to achieve social change. Using
the disability and LGBT rights movements as examples, well discuss
the types of discrimination people with disabilities and LGBT people
face and how these movements are similar, and uncover new ways to
protect LGBT people under existing law. Plus, well offer insights into
how to deploy law, practices and social norms in a synergistic fashion to
advance social justice goals.
Personnel is Policy: Making Progress in an Era
of Congressional Gridlock
Room 226
Congress is messed up. How can activists push the government to
address pressing problems amidst political polarization and gridlock?
As Sen. Warren noted at last year's Netroots Nation, "personnel is policy."
One way is to make sure that the president aggressively enforces
powerful laws already on the books. From the Sherman Antitrust Act
and Clean Air Act to Dodd-Frank and the ACA, regulatory action
and inaction shape the country in which we live. Join us to learn how
activists can impact the direction of the executive branch.
Rethinking the Municipal Court System: How to Move
Money from Police and Courts to Services that Make
Our Communities Safe and Prosperous
Room 225
In low-income, Black communities disenfranchised by the criminal legal
system, millions are spent each year on courts and police that could be
invested in public services to meet basic needs of the community and
combat inequity. What if we could empower community members to
envision how they would like resources to be spent to promote genuine
public safety? What would it look like to hold political officials accountable to these community-led visions? Join St. Louis organizers as we
chart a path to redirect resources from traditional policing and court
models into public services that meet basic needs of the community.

Beyond the Like: Creative Content for Success on Facebook
[Sponsored Panel]
Room 223
Wondering how to take your Facebook content to the next level? How
to create and plan content to maximize your reach and impact? Join a
session with Facebook strategists to see the latest trends, understand the
newest tools, and get the most out of your time on Facebook.
Black Women and Storytelling: How Centering Black Women's
Experiences Can Move Policy and Shape Culture [Voter Pick]
Room 222
Storytelling is one of the most sought-after ways to change cultural and
political landscapes; however, sometimes the ways in which stories are
collected, shared, and used can replicate the same systems of oppression
we seek to disrupt. How can centering Black women's expertise in
storytelling and story sharing move policy and culture? Participants will
leave this session with an understanding on how to approach, respect,
and uplift the expertise of Black women storytellers.
Fear Trumping Reason: Reclaiming America's Brain
from Right-Wing Media Manipulators [Voter Pick]
Room 228
In order to break the toxic grip that Fox and other right-wing outlets
hold over so many of our fellow Americans, we need to have a deeper
understanding of how right-wing media manipulators work, what
forces enable their continued success, and how to fight The Fox Effect."
Attend this session and youll leave with insights, tools, techniques, and
motivation to help counter the misinformation and divisive influence
of right-wing media in our relationships, politics and culture.

From 'Saying Abortion Aloud' to UndocuQueer:

A Discussion of Storytelling Genres and Methods
Room 227
We've seen that storytelling can give visibility to the invisible, destigmatize experiences considered controversial, and mobilize social justice
movements. Join us as people with diverse identities and experiences
discuss their strategies for relating personal stories through art, social
media, spoken word, and other genres to achieve innovative activism.
Networked Change: Real Stories and Research from
the Front Lines of Today's Most Successful Movements
Room 224
NetChange Consulting recently released a report that maps the
strategies and practices that made todays most successful advocacy
campaigns work. The result of a deep dive into nearly 50 case studies,
the Networked Change report puts a special focus on what were calling
directed network campaigns, a model for building people-powered
movements that are centrally framed and managed in a way that leads to
staying power and concrete wins. Whats a directed network campaign?
Look no further than #Fightfor15, BlackLivesMatter, Keystone/Tar
Sands/climate and Bernie Sanders. We'll unpack the strategic and
operational elements common to these campaigns, and share stories
from the front lines of these innovative campaigns.
Refugee Rights: How the Anti-Immigrant and Anti-Muslim
Movements Target Refugees (and What We Can Do)
Room 225
This year has seen an unprecedented rise in the political targeting of
refugeesfrom bigoted rhetoric to xenophobic legislation on the state
and federal levels. Fear-mongering from Trump and other politicians
has opened up space for anti-refugee sentiment to move into the
mainstream, but the groundwork for this explosion of bigotry was
laid by the increasing collaboration of the organized anti-immigrant
and anti-Muslim movements. We'll expose the drivers of anti-refugee
policy and rhetoric and discuss how our communities can fight back.
The LGBTQ Movement: Where Do We Go from Here?
Room 226
Join us for a forward-thinking conversation about the future of the
LGBTQ movement. Now that marriage is the law of the land, what
issues will be priority in the next year? In the next 5? We'll talk about
the future of the L, G, B, T and Q movements and how each of the issues
differ. We'll discuss how we expand the circle of LGBT leaders beyond
the current crop of mostly white, male leadership and brainstorm how
we can center more of our work on the experiences of queer people of color.
The Progressive Movement Has a Sexual Assault
and Harassment Problem. Now What?
Room 221
We have a rape culture problem in the progressive movement. After
the high-profile closure of FitzGibbon Media and the rise of a survivorjustice movement, addressing everyday sexism, sexual harassment and
assault in the movement has become a hot topic. But how do we fix
it? The reality is this abuse is not just the product of a few isolated
actors, but the result of a permissive and often supportive culture in
our organizations. Serial abusers move from one group to another

for years, making our movement a toxic and sometimes dangerous

place. This panel will discuss how to address this issue, what a positive
structured response could look like and how to make our progressive
organizations and movement safer.

S E S S I O N 3 ( T H U R S D AY, 1 2 : 1 5 P. M . )
#BlackQueerMagic: Black Feminism & Pop Culture as Resistance
Room 224
This panel will center Black women and femmes who describe their
experiences, Black feminist resistance and popular culture analysis to
dissect and examine the ways in which Black women are constantly
surviving violence, voyeurism and erasure, while being the most important
demographic for political shifting and public policy implementation.
From Beyonc getting us InFormation to Love & Hip Hop politicking,
there is a power and politicization within popular culture that is created
by Black women and femmes that links to how public policy around
Black women and femme bodies is shaped. Topics addressed in this
panel include public policy, reproductive and sexual rights, consent,
#BLM and labor/wage justice.
Coalitions: The Key to Survival When You're the
Superminority in the State Capitol
Room 228
Join Progress Missouri and leaders from four coalition partners to discuss
the importance of building strong coalitions and sticking together in
the face of seemingly non-stop attacks. Attendees will come away with
new strategies and ideas for their organizations to surviveand even
thrivewhen operating in states where they are part of a significantly
out-numbered minority. This discussion will bring to light debates, strategies, disagreements and solutions necessary for carrying out the missions
of progressive organizations in the very real world of red state politics.
Economic Violence and the Black Jobs Crisis
Room 225
We have a Black jobs crisis on our handsand the impact that race has
played in our ability to obtain employment has devastated many of our
communities. From Black unemployment rates in the double digits to
the severe underemployment of Black transgender women, this panel
will discuss the history of our economy built on slave labor, the current
crisis the Black community faces as we strive for full employment, and
actions our organizations and communities can take as we look forward
to true employment equity.
Guerilla Comms: How to Organize a (Cost-effective) Plan that
Gets Maximum Exposure for your Cause [Sponsored Panel]
Room 223
Momentum is key to 21st Century movements. Whether built over years
or in days, campaign velocity necessitates effective planning and real-time
response to situations on the ground. Bridging the gap between your
offline and online advocacy efforts can be made easy with the right
technology and strategy. Budget constraints should no longer dictate the
reach or size of your campaign. Join us to hear from seasoned experts
who have developed a blueprint for winning campaigns.
Into the Hornet's Nest: How Women of Color are Leading
the Fight Against the Hyde Amendment [Voter Pick]
Room 220
For 40 years the Hyde Amendment has targeted poor women, women
of color, and young women by banning abortion coverage from Medicaid,
condemning many to unsafe procedures or unwanted pregnancies.
Women of color in the reproductive justice movement have risen up to
take on Hydeand with it, 40 years of stigma and silence. In five years,
organizations like All* Above All introduced the EACH Woman Act
and proactive state and local policies and mobilized thousands of grassroots supporters to stand up against Hyde. Learn how we're braving a
political hornet's nest and where we're going next with this fight.

Fighting Back in the Gig Economy: Strategies to Build

Worker Power from Immigrants and People of Color
Room 220
This panel will explore the exploitation present within an economy that
is moving further and further away from traditional employer/employee
relationships. Whether we call it the "gig" economy, the perma-temp
economy or just plain messed up, the fact remains that immigrants
and people of color have been experiencing this structure within the
economy for generations. They are the best source on how to build
worker power and demand change. Come explore the different ways
non-traditional workers are fighting for a new social contract.

New Models to Fund Movements

Room 227
The old funding models have stopped working well for 21st Century
progressive movements, but the new ways are still being created. Join
this session for an informative and dynamic discussion about some new
models for funding movement-building work that are being created
among progressive donor networks, individual small-dollar donors, and
social-change organizations themselves. In this moment, progressive
movements need money on a scale that matters and that allows organizations to employ the strategies they deem necessary to empower
people and winin policy and culture. Join us and help reinvent
what it means to be a movement philanthropist.
Religious Exemptions and Bathroom Panic:
How to Defeat Anti-LGBTQ Legislation in the States
Room 222
The 2015 Supreme Court decision in favor of marriage equality inspired
a backlash of discriminatory bills against the LGBTQ community from
state to state. This harmful legislation most frequently includes religious
exemption bills and bathroom regulations directly targeting the transgender community. The ultimate goal of these bills is to prevent transgender
people from transitioning, or even functioning, on a day-to-day basis.
Join us to hear from advocates and activists on how to address and defeat
these bills and how to respond if you live in a state where one has passed.
We'll also discuss how to challenge them in court.
The Past Year in Digital Testing: Where We've Come From
and Where to Go in 2016
Room 226
In the past year, organizations across the progressive space have done
amazing work measuring the digital tactics and tools that do and don't
work for a variety of persuasion and mobilization campaigns. Learn
from some of the cutting edge techniques that agencies and vendors are
building and using to optimize programsand the outstanding questions
that organizations should keep top of mind for planning in 2016.
The Poli-tech Startup: Working through Challenges [Voter Pick]
Room 221
Many of the challenges facing progressive political tech startups are
unique. VCs are inherently skeptical of poli-tech and the measure of
early success is often much different than it is in Silicon Valley. Whether
you're weighing a startup or are already past the early stage, this session
will offer insight from entrepreneurs at all stages of the startup cycle.

Flint and Detroit Public Schools: Disasters for Democracy
and Public Health
Room 223
Flint and Detroit Public Schools were both assigned the same Emergency
Manager, and in both cases, infrastructure crumbled, resulting in disastrous
impact on local communities. In Flint, residents were subject to leadpoisoned water, and in Detroit, students were exposed to toxic mold in
their schools. Democracy was subverted by law, and communities had
an unrepresentative manager who did not respond to their needs. We'll
examine the underlying issues of democracy and austerity and talk about
how to prevent disasters like these in the future.
Healing Justice, Love & Liberation: Is The Movement Killing You?
Room 220
Front-line activists face increasing amounts of stress, pressure and
violence or threats of violence in their daily work. With the urgency of
our work so acute, it can feel selfish to take care and do essential healing
work for ourselves. But love is justice and justice is loveespecially
when that love means developing practices of self-care and healing that

strategies and tools to show up for the work that needs be done, while
creating the space needed to heal, care for and resource ourselves so we

Moving Beyond Brogressives: Ensuring Economic Justice
Includes Reproductive Justice
Room 222
It's 2016. Why are we still seeing male dominance within the progressive
movement? It's not uncommon to see issues of particular importance to
womenespecially reproductive health, rights, and justicesidelined
as "social issues" while the progressive agenda is defined by economic
issues that are framed as somehow separate. Yet reproductive and
sexual self-determination are core economic issues, as is freedom from
identity-based discrimination. In this panel, we'll talk about why the
movement can and must move beyond brogressives, mansplaining and
unhelpful comments targeting activists who speak up on Twitter, and
discuss how we can work toward greater inclusion and an agenda that

Entertainment Industryand Winning
Room 224
Save Kesha!, #OscarsSoWhite and & #StopWhiteWashing are just some
of the powerful campaigns our panelists have waged to influence
Hollywood, pop music and even the comic book industry. Because pop
culture shapes the public imagination, activists are fighting for diversity
both behind the camera and in front of it. Campaigns around popular
culture provide opportunities to expose oppression that can go unnoticed
and unchallenged. Online activism is already making a difference in the
entertainment we consume. We'll teach you how to do it!
Race and Justice: Telling the Stories of Black and
Latino Youth in the Adult Criminal Justice System
Room 221
Over the last decade, a number of states have enacted laws that aim to
keep juveniles out of adult prisons and court systemsa reversal of the
tough-on-crime legislation of the 1980s and 1990s. The new laws stem
from concerns about teenage suicides in adult jails and new research
showing that young people held in adult courts are more likely to be
repeat offenders than juveniles not held in adult jails. Youth of color
particularly are disproportionately impacted by this practice. Join us for
a discussion about the long-term impacts of treating children as adults
in the criminal justice system.
Silence, Shame, Scandal: Ending Abortion Stigma
in the Media (and the Fight to Protect Access)
Room 226
News and entertainment media can act as a mirror to our understanding of abortion in the U.S. It can also be a platform for moving society
by generating programming that questions existing practices. We'll
explore how the media talks about abortion, from right-wing examples
of abortion stigma to examples of media discussing it with authenticity
and facts. Examining ways in which media can be used as a tool to shift
stigma, we'll highlight fresh efforts to tackle abortion stigma creatively
through culture and art, and share best practices on how to talk about
abortion outside of the political paradigm. And we'll touch on what's being
done to protectand expandaccess to abortion around the country.
The Future of Collaborative Data: How We'll Continue
Beating Republicans [Voter Pick]
Room 227
Over the past 10 years, Democrats and progressives have built a superior
campaign data and technology infrastructure and a more effective
ground-game than Republicans. What's been our secret weapon and
how will we continue innovating and expanding upon our "progressive
tech edge?" This panel will feature key leaders in progressive tech to
discuss what has contributed to our current tech advantage, and what
types of technology progressive campaigns are building to continue
winning up and down the ballot for elections to come.

Black Voices, Black Victories: Changing the Story on Race

in a Digital Age
Room 226
As the Movement for Black Lives increases in visibility, so do the voices
and strategies of those working on and offline to end state-sanctioned
violence against Black people. As we work to shift culture and change
the way people think and behave toward one another, we employ bold,
visionary digital and traditional communications tactics rooted in the
Black experience. Hear from organizers and communicators who work
at the intersection of race, digital strategy and communications about
how they organize and mobilize people to broaden international conversations about the impact of state violence on Black communities and
drive critical conversations from the 'hood to the White House about
an authentic transformation of American democracy.
Changing the Face of Criminal Justice: Why Women of
Color are Crucial to Criminal Justice Reform [Voter Pick]
Room 221
In 2015, a report from the Reflective Democracy Campaign found that
79 percent of the 2,437 elected prosecutor positions in the U.S. are filled
by white men, and only 1 percent by women of color. When it comes to
sheriffs, women are only 1.3 percent of the 3,081 sheriffs in this country.
It is our duty to elect representatives who reflect the diversity of our
communities to ensure a truly just application of the law. This panel will
share strategies and approaches to recruiting womenspecifically women
of colorto run for elected law enforcement offices in order to dismantle
racist structures within our judicial system and police departments.
Keep It in the Ground: Getting the Federal Government
Out of the Fossil Fuel Business
Room 224
Over the last several years, we've seen grassroots organizing turn the tide
and deliver victories on several key climate battles, including the Keystone
pipeline and Arctic drilling. Now, the Keep It in the Ground movement
is building on those victories and turning to an even-more ambitious goal:
ending all new leases for coal, oil, gas and tar sands extraction on our
citizen-owned federal public lands. Sen. Jeff Merkley, lead author of the
Keep It in the Ground Act, will join others to discuss the successes of the
past few years and how progressives can work with grassroots organizers,
Congress and the Administration to take even bolder steps to save our planet.
Letting Members Lead: The Mess and Magic of
Distributed Organizing
Room 228
Distributed organizing has proliferated across the advocacy space. Far
from the early create-your-own-petition sites, many organizations are
running programs that give members a larger role in campaigning strategy
and execution. The benefits are huge, including list growth from people
engaged in heartfelt causes and a powerful leadership pipeline. There are
also challenges: balancing the needs of growth and impact, wrangling
campaign support resources, avoiding brand damage and finding the right
technology. Join us for a conversation with about what's working, what's
not and what's next as we move toward more participatory campaigning.

Living and Working Our Values: Dismantling Rape Culture

in Progressive Spaces and Ending Sexual Harassment and
Violence at Work [Voter Pick]
Room 227
Though it's long been an issue, recent high-profile incidents have highlighted the persistent problem of so-called progressive people, businesses,
and organizations that ostensibly fight for justice and equality, yet sexually
harass, assault, and abuse their fellow colleagues and employees behind
closed doors. How can we address this through organizational accountability
and restorative justice models? How do we balance the need to keep
peopleparticularly girls, women, and members of the LGBTQIA
communitysafe, while making space for people to overcome mistakes?
Moving into Action: Raising the Bar for Co-conspirators
Room 225
Solidarity is easy to find on the internet, but co-conspirators can be
harder to find in the streets. How do we move people with privilege up
the ladder of engagement to riskier actions? How do we get them to
show upand is showing up enough? In order to build more powerful
movements, solving the puzzle of turning out groups that aren't the most
affected by our issues is critical. Panelists on the front lines will share lessons
learned from turning out co-conspirators to protest, donate and lead.
Right to Work and the War on Workers in Missouri
[Sponsored Panel]
Room 223
Anti-worker advocates in the Show Me States Legislature have in recent
years tried to push through bills that would curb workers collective
bargaining rights and their ability to contribute to their unions through
so-called right-to-work and paycheck deception legislation. Those efforts
have been fueled by corporate dollars. But Missouri isnt the only state where
this is going on. This panel will discuss the struggle for workers rights.
Taking Bernie's Political Revolution to Congress
Room 222
When Bernie Sanders calls for a "political revolution," he isn't thinking
just about the race for the White House. Bernie knows that the political
revolution involves millions of people standing up to transform our
country by electing progressive leaders up and down the ballot, especially
candidates for Congress. This panel will explore how we can elect bold
new candidatestaking the political revolution to Congress.
Telling Winning Stories When the Opponents are Really
Loud: The Fight for Clean Energy and the Clean Power Plan
Room 220
Despite the Supreme Court's recent decision to put a temporary hold on
the Clean Power Plan, climate and public health advocates and activists
are still making one thing clear: it won't revive the fortunes of the coal
industry, slow the transition to clean energy or disrupt progress toward
meeting the climate commitment the U.S. made in Paris last year. As
the Supreme Court legal process unfolds, something else will continue
unfolding as wellthe steady progress of activists to retire dirty coal-fired
power plants and replace them with clean, safe energy sources. Learn
about the judicial process related to the Clean Power Plan and how to
keep telling positive, progress stories that beat out the noise of opponents.

#transTRUTH from Trans Youth: Challenging Media

Narratives on What it Means to be Young and Trans
Room 225
TRUTH, a collaboration between Transgender Law Center and GSA
Network, is a national storytelling and movement-building campaign
led by transgender and gender nonconforming young people from
across the U.S. Through videos, selfie campaigns and other creative new
media projects, TRUTH empowers trans and gender nonconforming youth
to share their stories as a way to challenge media narratives, create
community with other young people and build empathy. This discussion
of youth leaders will allow the audience to hear directly from trans and
gender nonconforming young people about their experiences and work
building an intersectional movement.

Bold Strategies for Achieving Political Equality through

a New Supreme Court [Voter Pick]
Room 228
The unexpected death of the Justice Antonin Scalia has opened a rare
window of opportunity to undo perhaps the most despised Supreme
Court decision of the modern era: Citizens United. With a new 4-4
divide on the high court, and with the hope of a progressive court
majority in 2016 or early 2017, the time to chart a course for reversing
Citizens United and its doctrinal predecessor, Buckley v. Valeo, has
finally arrived. It's time for campaign finance and corporate power
reformers to move from defense to offense.
From Selma to Ferguson: Voting Rights in the Digital Age
Room 226
More than 50 years have elapsed since the passage of the Voting Rights
Act, and communities of color are still fighting for their right to vote.
This panel looks at how the SCOTUS decision in Shelby County v.
Holder opened the floodgates for discriminatory voter suppression laws
nationwide, what's being done to fight back, and what it means to fight
for voting rights in the age of #BlackLivesMatter. Leaders from the
movement to #RestoreTheVRA will discuss both defensive strategies
that protect voters and offensive strategies that seek to secure the right
to vote and increase voter turnout. We'll also cover how to push back
against harmful narratives that support voter suppression.
Israeli Apartheid and Palestinian Civil Rights [Voter Pick]
Room 227
It's time for progressives to have a serious discussion about how Israel has
become an apartheid state. For nearly 50 years, the Palestinian people
have lived under a military occupation by a foreign government that
limits freedom of movement and equal access to water, forces the usage
of segregated roads and buses, and allows for the murder of tens of thousands of Palestinians in what the U.S. State Department has described
in its Country Reports on Human Rights Practices as "institutional and
societal discrimination against Arab citizens, in particular in access to
equal education and employment opportunities; societal discrimination
and domestic violence against women."
Justice at the Ballot Box: How Holding Prosecutors
Accountable in Elections is Key to Criminal Justice Reform
Room 224
Prosecutors may be the most powerful people in our criminal justice
system. Too many refuse to hold police accountable when they kill Black
people while over-prosecuting and incarcerating Black folks for far less
damaging crimes. Most prosecutors are chosen by the people, but who
do they really serve? Nationwide, there are nearly 2400 elected prosecutors,
yet more than 70% run unopposed. Prosecutor elections offer a chance
to make voting feel more meaningful by holding bad actors accountable.
How do we shift the narrative in prosecutor races and create a framework
that truly responds to our communities' needs? And where are the best
opportunities to unseat bad prosecutors in the future?
New Politics for the New American Majority
Room 225
Our political system is out of touch with an electorate that is more diverse
and demanding than ever before. This session explores bold strategies
such as engaging new voters, providing alternative candidates, and
revamping political structures that hold back nontraditional candidates.
Through specific examples and data, the panelists show that it's possible
to reclaim our power even in the face of expensive campaigns, special
interests and entrenched incumbents.
The Racial Policies that Built Ferguson (and Baltimore and Flint)

how this racial landscape was created.
For Our Future: Uniting and Mobilizing Communities of Color,
Millennials and Working People in 2016 [Sponsored Panel]
Room 223
During this election season, weve seen insults and offensive rhetoric
pitting various groups against each other. When working people are
divided, corporate interests win. The wealthy few focus on our divisions
to encourage working people to attack each other instead of fighting for
new rules that will level the playing field and make the economy fairer.
The outcome of this election cycle will determine union rights, voting
rights, campaign finance reform, free speech rights, corporate rights
and reproductive rights for years to come. This panel will focus on how
to unite working people around an agenda that will level the playing
field for all Americans and fight for a more inclusive democracy.
When We Fight, We Win!: The Role of Art and Culture
in Movement Building
Room 220
What is the role of art and culture in movement building? How are we
developing artist leadership in cultural organizing? How do we create
structures which support cultural work in our organizations? Based on
their book When We Fight, We Win! 21st Century Social Movements
and the Activists that are Transforming our World, Greg Jobin-Leeds
joins forces with AgitArte, Paulina Helm-Hernandez of SONG and other
organizers and artists to further the discussion on the role of cultural
work within our organizations, communities and movements. This panel
will consider the mutual impact that arts and social movements have on
each other and explore how the arts contribute to social transformation.

will be explored in this panel.
Ending Campus Rape: How Survivors are Creating a Winning

national crisis, but we are finally at a tipping point. We'll explore how
survivors from across the country have transformed the conversation
about sexual assault and turned student activism into a national movement. As we have gained momentum, the backlash has grown. From
George Will's "survivor privilege" to Rolling Stone, we'll explore media's
contribution to rape culturein particular, the alarming trend of victimblaming and rape denial and how it impacts survivors of color. Panelists
will discuss how students are leveraging social media and online advocacy
to change the conversation and hold their institutions accountable.
Forming Your Squad: Fighting Gender Bias in the

they navigated the minefield of white tech bros, overcoming impostor
syndrome, negotiating effectively, fighting bias in the workplace and
building a necessary and supportive data lady squad.

Making Progressive Issues Presidential: How Debt-free

College Became Central to this Election
Room 220
Could debt-free college be to 2016 what healthcare reform was to
2008? A huge grassroots push in 2015 put debt-free college center stage
in the presidential debate and political lexicon. Clinton and Sanders
both endorsed it, and it has come up in every Democratic presidential
debate. This panel will explore the history of student debt activism and
discuss how debt-free college became a huge issue in 2016. We'll discuss
how to build bridges between lawmakers and the grassroots, so we enter
2017 with a mandate and a strategy to pass debt-free college into law.
Money in Politics in the Year of Trump and Sanders
Room 227
On the left, Bernie Sanders built a movement against the buying of our
democracy by billionaires like the Koch brothers, and a broad coalition
of groups fighting for free and fair elections staged mass mobilizations
in April to ratchet up the pressure for change in DC. On the right,
moneyed, establishment candidates backed by the Koch network fell by
the wayside to self-funding billionaire Donald Trump, defying the media
narrative around money in politics. Hear from activists building the
Money Out Movement about strategies that are working on the ground
to harness the energy of this anti-establishment election cycle.
Strategic Communications for Black Lives
Room 221
Behind the scenes of the Movement for Black Lives, strategic communicators work to amplify the movement's visibility and maintain a national
dialogue about police brutality and the criminalization of people of color.
This panel discussion will offer a unique opportunity to hear directly
from these strategists about the most effective tools and strategies they
employ in their work. The panel will emphasize the movement's focus
on amplifying the voices of organized communities of color from the
local to the national level and explore the innovative, next-generation
tactics they've used to affirm the lives of people of color.
The Next Supreme Court: 2016 and the Fight for the
Soul of Our Constitution
Room 225
This election cycle is a pivotal moment for the Supreme Court. For
decades, the Court has been profoundly conservative, standing against
progress on issues from voting rights to guns to racial and economic
justice. The bitter lesson is that it matters who serves on our courts,
particularly the Supreme Court. Now, in the throes of a political battle
over one vacancy, we must remember that the next president will likely
fill three additional seats, controlling the Court for a generation. Join us
as we discuss the issues at stake and how activists can make a difference

Beyond Bars: Feminist Perspectives on (and Alternatives to)
the Criminal Legal System
Room 222
The criminal legal system has drawn wide condemnation from progressives, including both democratic presidential candidates. Yet its impact
on individuals and communitiesBlack, queer, Muslim, woman,

to the system, one which has historically been built and fueled by white
men for their own financial gain. What do today's feminist leaders of
color say about this racist and hyper-masculine capitalist enterprise?
What alternatives to prisons are they proposing to hold our communities
accountable for harmful behavior, such as gender-based violence? What
other solutions can we imagine? And how can we build alternatives
without recreating racist and sexist violence
Grassroots Power: How to Beat the Koch Brothers at Organizing

How Progressives Helped Pass the Iran Deal and

How We Can Keep Winning
Room 224
The Iran nuclear agreement was a huge accomplishment for the
Obama administration, for the U.S., and for a progressive vision of
foreign policy. In contrast to the Iraq warwhich cost trillions of
dollars, killed more than 4,000 Americans and 100,000 Iraqis and was
disastrous for our securitythe Iran agreement advanced our security
by working with international partners and putting diplomacy first.
But the work isn't done. The battle over the agreement in Congress
was hard fought. Building a more progressive foreign policy requires
supporting those members who supported the deal and blocking the
right's efforts to undermine it. We'll discuss that, and what's needed to
develop and strengthen a progressive foreign policy vision.

How to Have a Conversation About Race Without Everyone

Running Out of the Room
Room 225
This nation and, more importantly, our unions have always been uncomfortable when it comes to addressing racial inequalities in an honest and
solution-oriented way. In this workshop, union leaders, educators and
community organizers will present strategies on how to approach the
conversation on race when interacting with different ideologies. Our
unions are agents of change, and we should not be afraid of having
tough dialogue. We'll share tools and tips for how to lead your union

The Rise and Fall of the GOP Gerrymander:
The Fight for Progressive Redistricting Continues
Room 227
In 2011, Republican state legislators drew outrageous partisan and
racial gerrymanders, while Democrats in the biggest redistricting
states were forced to watch from the sidelines as future elections were
rigged to favor the Tea Party. In 2016, Democrats are fighting back.
State and federal courts have struck down Republican-drawn maps in
Florida, North Carolina and Virginia because of the extreme measures
Republicans took to enshrine partisan and racial discrimination into
legislative and congressional districts. Join us as we talk about the
Democratic plan to prevent GOP gerrymandering after 2020.
What Does it Mean to be Progressive on Israel and Palestine?
Room 221
In the spring of 2015, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
revealed himself as a partisan Republican in a way that he hadn't
publicly before. This created the space for "mainstream" progressivism
regarding the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Put another way, it became
more comfortable to identify as an American whose progressive values
apply to U.S. politics as well as the situation in the Middle East. But
what does that mean? From Israeli settlement expansion to the BDS
movement to human rights, the progressive space has paved several
paths toward the common goal of peace. This panel seeks to have a
constructive conversation about the merits of various approaches.

and Michelle Obama is still our First Lady. Marilyn Mosby is still prosecuting six police officers for #FreddieGray. Erica Garner endorsed Bernie
Sanders while her mother and other "mothers of the movement" endorsed
Hillary Clinton. The Supreme Court has an opening. Will a Black woman
finally be appointed? Meanwhile, Black women are the largest democratic
voting bloc, yet remain inadequately represented in online and offline
campaigns. Now in its sixth year, you'd betta #AskaSista.
Authentically Engaging with Trans* Leadership in
Progressive Organizing

in 2015, and at least 6 have been murdered in 2016the vast majority
of whom were trans* women of color, and many of whom were immigrants, people with HIV and/or trans* disabled people. One in 4 trans*
people have experienced violence, and 47 percent of trans* people have
attempted suicide. Trans* people across the U.S. are leading the efforts
to end this violence. On this panel, organizers who are trans* people of
color, trans* disabled people, trans* immigrants and trans* people who
are HIV positive will share their work. Well also address hate violence,

policy while neocons and war hawks have set our countrys agenda.

the Middle East and around the world. Join us as we discuss practical
solutions and organizing strategies to counter U.S. militarism and
transform U.S. engagement with the world. Well talk about how to

Model Minority Mutiny: Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders

Center Our Racial Identities and Solidarities
Room 222

racial justice and stereotyped as the model minority. Despite this, people
are standing up, taking action and organizing to advance worker, immigrant
and civil rights. Join us for a discussion about the opportunities and challenges facing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in movements for
racial justice. How are Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders amplifying
their racial identities especially in a time of demographic change? How
are they asserting and centering their solidarities with other communities
of color?
November 9, 2016: How to Translate Millennial GOTV
to Millennial Power
Room 228
Young people continue to be a lightning rod in politics. Some believe
they're the future of the left, while others point to their unreliability in
electoral politics as a reason to not invest in their long-term political
power. Four young leaders of different organizations and movements will
shed some light, offering insight on how we can ensure demographics are
destiny for the progressive movement. They'll challenge the audience and
the larger movement to integrate the next generation into their work as
powerful actors while supporting Millennial-led organizations and movements to translate mobilization to sustained power. What can we do leading up to and post November to entrench Millennials as a political force?
Welcome to the Police State: How Islamophobia
Became Everyone's Problem
Room 221
Since 9/11, officials have used the specter of Muslim terrorists to justify
an ever-expanding police state. We're fed a stream of FBI-manufactured
plots, exaggerated threats and blanket otherization of Muslims. In the
name of protecting us from these vague yet ever-present threats, governments have implemented policies that affect all Americans, including
omnipresent surveillance, draconian immigration programs and the use
of counter-terrorism resources to intimidate and silence activists. The
level of government authority to spy, abuse, detain and disappear has
never been greater. We cannot effectively campaign against the police
state until we dismantle the Islamophobic and narratives that underpin it.

use the power of their experience to create dialogue and understanding on an issue as complex, divisive and difficult to broach as death
and dying. Join us for a look at lessons learned in recruiting, training

potential is left on the table. Make It Work has developed an engaging,

Action into Being: Growing as an Ally
Saturday, 3-4:15 p.m., Room 101
The struggle for liberation is beautifuland hard. We may intellectually
understand or spiritually believe that, as Desmond Tutu says, "My
humanity is caught up, is inextricably bound up, in yours. But when
it comes to joining hands and locking elbows, there are groups of people
we often dont include. We might share/retweet or have an intellectual
conversation about intersectionality, but we dont always show up
when it really counts. What does it mean to value those with whom
we dont share identity? Join us as we examine the places in which our
attachment to privilege and power is getting in the way of creating
the kind of world we want. This training is intended for white people

Powermap Your Way to Victory
Saturday, 1:30-2:45 p.m., Room 101

than your opponent does. However, the hallmark of a great coach is
the ability to figure out how to do that. Do you focus on defense and
deny your opponent points? Do you focus on offense and running up
the score? The answers to these questions transform a run-of-the-mill
coachor organizer!into a great one. In this training, well teach you

you or your allies struggle to keep the lights on, buy supplies and get
paid. We all know this work takes money. But far too many funders

We're Here and We're Queer: An LGBT Cultural Sensitivity

Conversation Going Beyond Best Practices
Friday, 9-10:15 a.m., Room 100
Join us for a community conversation about language and intention.
In this training, well move beyond the usual LGBT 101 to how to
best affirm and honor LGBT community members we interact with in
daily life. We'll look at how multiple identities intersect, and how those
identities impact LGBT community members in unique and varied
ways. We cannot create change until we have dialogue, and we cannot
have dialogue until we have a language to use. This training is for
those who might say, "I don't know any gay people, and also great
for more seasoned LGBT advocates.

Thursday, 10:30-11:45 a.m., Room 102
Improving your fundraising is critical, whether you're running a small

new tools is changing the way we think about engaging our communities.
Join us for an exploration of how traditional cornerstones of grassroots movements can be accomplished more quickly and effectively
than ever before. This training will cover the latest technologies in
civic engagement and how those tools can help you collect powerful data
through direct communication with your communitydata that can
be used to drive growth, participation, fundraising and awareness
while measuring impact. The training is intended for those curious
about civic technology and how it can help amplify a cause, as well
as those looking for new ways of approaching an industry that is ripe

You Can't Buy Our Vote: How to Center Black People
in Political Organizing [Voter Pick]
Friday, 1-2:15 p.m., Room 101
The votes and support of Black people are imperative to winning
any election. But appropriating Black culture will not make us vote
for you, nor does it make us relate with candidates who have proven

political agents accountable, this training will provide consciousness
raising around how Black people must be centered in political engagement within organizing and public policy. What is anti-Blackness and
how does it affect political systems and voting? Learn how to actively
disengage from anti-Black politicking and political organizing. Youll
leave with a better understanding of how Black people can be centered
in political campaigns and organizing. This session is for all audiences.

the lens of her WWII vet father who changed from a life-long,
nonpolitical Democrat to an angry, right-wing fanatic after his
discovery of talk radio on a lengthened commute to work. In trying
to understand how this happened, she not only finds this to be a
phenomenon, but also uncovers some of the forces behind it: a plan
by Roger Ailes under Nixon to create a media for the GOP; the
Lewis Powell Memo, urging business leaders to influence institutions
of public opinion, the media and the courts; and under Reagan, the
dismantling of the Fairness Doctrineall of which helped to change
the entire countrys direction and culture, misinformed millions and
divided families and even the country itself. The film will be introduced
by Charles Chamberlain of Democracy For America, which is planning

Screening: Dear President Obama

The film takes a cross-country look at drilling, highlighting its variety
of contaminations, the stories of its victims, and the false promise of
an economic boom, with a focus on clean energy solutions that would
allow us to proceed toward a future that does not rely on yet another
dirty fossil fuel extraction process. Interviews with scientists, economists,
health professionals, geologists, and whistle-blowers provide the core
information we think will convince the current President and those
who will follow to join the anti-drilling majority growing across the
United States and call for fossil fuels to be left where they belongin
the ground. An Oceans 8 film written and directed by Jon Bowermaster
and narrated by Mark Ruffalo.

Laughter with a Reel Punch: Comedy and Political Video

You forward your friends funny clips online, but rarely do you
forward political ads. Most of us talk with colleagues about the latest
movies with much more excitement than we talk about the latest
candidate forum. The fact is that good videos and good laughs are
two ways to cut through the noise this election season, get your message heard, and expand the audience hearing it. This session looks
at creative ways to link the two: how comedians are using the world
of video to deliver punchlines and punditry with progressive punch.

Screening: Abortion: Stories Women Tell

In 1973, the US Supreme court decision Roe v. Wade gave every
woman the right to have an abortion. Since 2011, over half the states
in the nation have significantly restricted access to abortions. In 2016,
abortion remains one of the most divisive issues in America, especially
in Missouri, where each year sees more restrictions. Award-winning
director and Missouri native Tracy Droz Tragos sheds new light on
the contentious issue, with a focus not on the debate, but rather on the
women themselves: those struggling with unplanned pregnancies, the
providers who show up at clinics to give medical care and the activists
on the sidewalks hoping to sway decisions and lives.

At the CENTER FOR MEDIA JUSTICE,

home of the Media Action Grassroots Network, we believe that the right to communicate
belongs to everyone. When we oppose media consolidation, we take
a stand for the rights of workers whose jobs are being eliminated

for reduced services. When we fight for media representation, we
counter the stereotypes that help regressive policies flourish, and win
better coverage of our communities and issues. Community ownership of media infrastructure leads to robust local economies and
stronger, more engaged communities. When we hold those in power
accountable for our rights in a digital age, we counter the surveillance used to cripple our communities and our campaigns. For these

economic justice.

NETROOTS NATION ON YOUR 11TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE.

As union members, we are all fighting for every family to succeed. Together with our partners,
supporters and all those who believe in the irrefutable cause for justicewe are unstoppable.
We look forward to working with you to create the next forms of worker organization;
build a wider movement around our common struggle for economic, racial, immigrant
and environmental justice; and innovate in our union so we can use our collective
strength to win for our families and communities.

The Foundation for

Middle East Peace
is a leading voice seeking a peaceful
resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Through education and advocacy, we raise
awareness about how peace can work - as
well as the threats that terrorism and military
occupation pose.

WITH THOUSANDS OF LIVES RUINED

AND LOST, AND NEW VICTIMS DAILY,
PEACE IS NEEDED MORE THAN EVER.
Peace doesnt just help Palestinians and
Israelis. Its an American interest, too. And as
Israels closest ally, the U.S. is in a unique
position to bring the two parties together to
help them find a just, equitable, and durable
solution to a conflict that has dragged on for
too long.

If I were not president but king in America,

I would abolish all teachers lounges where they
sit together and worry about woe is us.
John Kasich

Fortunately, John Kasich is not king. And, better

yet, at Netroots we have the best teachers lounge
the AFT Lounge. So stop by, relax and recharge.
Were not saying you cant come and complain
about the state of the world, but our lounge is more
of a place to share ideas and help us fight for our
students, our schools and great public services.
We call it reclaiming the promise of America.
And well have snacks!
If you cant make it to the lounge, you
can still join the fight by becoming
part of the AFTs rapid response team.
