The Philippines is a country of

almost 100 million people

spread out over 7,100 islands.
Traditionally, our economy was
viewed as mainly agricultural
and much of the business and
investment focus was on three
key cities : Metro Manila, Cebu,
and Davao.

In reality, however, the Philippines

has become more urbanized over
time; 63% of our population live in
urban areas (including small urban
areas), according to the 2012
World Population Data Sheet. Cities
are typically centers of consumption,
resource use, and waste. But they are
also key growth drivers of regional
economies, particularly when a
number of cities and municipalities
are clustered.

LIVEABILITY

Livability refers to all the factors that contribute to a communitys quality of

life, Simply put, it is a measure of whether or not a place is a good place to
live, raise children, work and play.

We take livability to mean a city's ability to

be responsive to the needs of its inhabitants
around certain key areas.

Infrastructure and natural

environment

Social programs

Recreational opportunities

Educational opportunities

Support for mental health and

marginalized populations

We are motivated by a vision that

Davao is the city where you can
find life, a city that pushes the
boundaries of what is possible in
the Philippines- a city that thrives
for social justice and ecological
balance, a city that is capable of
thriving in a global economy
while nurturing neighborhoods
with integrity, and a city that
welcomes all wile maintaining a
sense of community.

Elements of a Liveable City

COMPACT
Livable Cities conserve land, and are of
sufficiently density to support frequent transit
service and neighborhood-serving businesses.

DIVERSE
Livable Cities offer multi functional and multi use
structures that is suited to all types of people,
incomes, provide a wide range of jobs, shops,
support local businesses and services
Livable Cities provide a mix of housing,
workplaces, and neighborhood-serving shops
and services.

SUSTAINABLE
Livable cities are sustainable in 3 aspects:
Economy, Environment, and Social.

HEALTHY
Livable Cities support the physical and mental
health of residents, are clean and safe, and
promote social inclusion and sociability.
.

GREEN
Livable Cities are well served by parks,
playgrounds, plazas, and greenways. Trees
and plantings are integrated into street
designs. Buildings are designed to provide
compact gardens, courtyards, terraces, and
green roofs.
Livable Cities are those who respect natural
areas, and try to enhance, preserve and
accentuate those areas.

ACCESSIBLE
Livable Cities support car-free living by being
well-connected to citywide and regional
destinations by sustainable transportation modes
(walking, cycling, public transit, paratransit and
taxi). Streets and public transit are designed for
universal accessibility.

A VITAL PUBLIC REALM

Consisting of places in which people
can share space without having to
share anything else. This idea is close
to heart of what a democracy is
about.
Cities foster social interaction that
crosses the boundaries of class and
culture.
These interactions, which provide the
underpinning for values of respect,
compromise and solidarity, take place
in public institutions and public
space- in parks, plazas and
sidewalks.

We cannot dictate what kinds of interactions people have. But we can make sure
the city is welcoming to spontaneous exchanges, at least inviting more people to
spend time in public. Parks and Plazas should be gorgeous. So should streets,
which comprise the larges piece of the citys open space network.

Walkability
Maximizing the number of trips which can made on foot and making the
walking experience enjoyable by everyone. Everyone, at some point in the day,
is a pedestrian. The pedestrian deserves precedence over all modes of
transportation

Connects people to the entire region

Everyone should be able to get easily to any other part of the city and the
broader region. We can have the best of both worlds: living in a city while at
the same time living in a world metropolis that gives us a huge array of options
for work and play.
