BASIC ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS

Course Syllabus
Course Code

BTHERM

Course Name

Engineering Thermodynamics

Course Description

This course deals with the study of the fundamental principles of heat as a form of energy and its
transformation in a macroscopic level or classical approach. The study involves the investigation
of the governing laws of thermodynamics, ideal gas concepts (processes and cycles) and other
concepts that bears relation to heat energy conversion such as: basic unit of measurement,
properties of substance, property relationships etc

Course Credits

2 units

Course Prerequisite

Chemistry and Physics 2

Course Corequisite
Objectives

General
The student will acquire a strong foundation on laws and concepts of thermodynamics.
Specific
After successfully completing the course, the students should be able to:
Define Thermodynamics and articulate its definition
Distinguish Classical from Statistical Thermodynamics
Understand the governing laws of Thermodynamics
Define properties of substance and understand the property relationships
Solve property relationship problems
Apply the concept of Work, Energy and Heat in solving engineering related
problems
