その簡単便利な使い勝手と共有サービスであることから、「Scribd」は“文書版 YouTube”
と言われる。
"Scribd" is called "Document version YouTube" because of the easy and convenient
usability and its nature of contents sharing.
基本的に文書をアップロードして値段を設定するだけの簡単操作で文書を 販売できる
「Scribd Store」は、文書の新しい流通方法として注目を集めている。
Basically "Scribd Store" which enables users to sell documents once they just upload
documents and set prices in an easy operation gathers attention as a new documents
distribution method.

“Scribd”の読み方について日本のブログなどで話題になっています。
First of all, a pronunciation of “Scribd" became a popular topic of conversation among
Bloggers in Japan,
何と発音すればいいのでしょうか?
How we should pronounce it?

Mr. Adler:
米国でも「スクライブド」と発音する人もいますが、「スクリブド」と読んでください。
Please pronounce it "[skribd]" though there are people who pronounce it "[skraibd]"in
the United States.
なぜこのサービスを作ろうと思ったのかから、教えてください。
Why did you intend to make this service?
Adler 氏:
Mr. Adler:
私の父は外科医なのですが、父が専門書を出版するのを見て大変そうだなと思っていま
した。オンラインならばもっと簡単にできるのに、と思ったのです。
I saw that my father who was a surgeon faced difficulty to publish medical books and
thought it was easier to publish “on line”.
父だけではなく、祖母の料理のレシピや学校のプリントなどもパブリッシュできるように
なれば、もっともっと多くの人たちが便利になるだろうと思いました。
I thought that it became more convenient for not only father but also more people if
grandmother and everyone can publish her recipe and a handout of the school on line.
Scribd の現在の状況を教えてください。
Can we ask current status of Scribd ?.

コンテンツは、350 億ワードのテキストと多くのビジュアルがこのサイトに登録されていま
す(データはいずれも 11 月時点)
。
As for contents, 35 billion words and a lot of visual images had been registered on this
site (both of data are as of November 2009).
これらのドキュメントは完全にソーシャルに共有されていて、お互いの文書にコメントを
付けることもできます。
Those documents are fully shared in social manner and users can put comments on each
other‟s documents mutually.
一番の特徴は「ソーシャルであること」

一番はソーシャルであることです。
“Being Social” is the first feature of Scribd.
プロフェッショナルでない素材・教材なども、書籍・雑誌・新聞などの商業コンテンツと
同じように蓄積され、ソーシャルアプリケーションで共有できます。
Unprofessional Documents, materials and etc are accumulated just like commercial
contents such as the book, magazines, and the newspapers, and it is possible to share
them by a social application.
つまり、グーグルやヤフーなどのサーチエンジンでもこれらのコンテンツにアクセスで
きるのです。

In a word, those contents can be accessed via search engines such as Google and yahoo.
また、Facebook、Twitter などのソーシャルアプリケーションとも連動しています。
Moreover, it works with social applications such as Facebook and Twitter.
さらに、Kindle、iPhone、ソニーリーダーなどのモバイルデバイスでもアクセスすること
ができ、そしてこれらのコンテンツはプリントすることもできます。
In addition, it is possible to access with mobile devices such as Kindle, iPhone, and Sony
leader. And those contents can be printed.
また、パブリッシュのプロセスが簡単なことが上げられます。
And the process of publication is easy.
ワンステップの操作でパブリッシュすることができるし、パブリッシュされたドキュメン
トは簡単な手順で誰とでも共有することができます。
It‟s possible to publish thorough one step operation, and those contents can be shared
with everyone through easy operation.
対応しているファイル形式について教えてください。

アップロード/ダウンロードフォーマットともに、PDF、Word、Execl、PowerPoint、
テキスト、オープンオフィスなどをサポートしています。
PDF, Word, Execl, PowerPoint, text, and open office, are supported formats for upload
and download.

ePub フォーマットは出版社では流行っていますが、一般ユーザーにとってはそうではな
いと思います。
I do not think the ePub format is popular among ordinary people though it becomes
popular among publishers.
まずは一般ユーザーに対し、用途に応じてさまざまな形式で扱えるようにしたいと考えて
います。
First of all, I want to support various format according to different proposes for ordinary
users.
ファイルの拡張子が.epub のため、一般に「ePub」と呼ばれる。
In general, it is called "ePub" because of the extension of the file.

コンテンツホルダーとの取引条件は?

ちなみに、Amazon.com との違いは価格付けと内容を、コンテンツホルダーがいつでも変
更できることだと思っています。
I think the difference from Amazon.com is that the contents holders can change price
and revise contents any time.

これはテストマーケティングに使えるし、データ更新も気軽にできます。
This can be used for the test marketing and the revision of contents is very easy.

Mr. Adler:
現在では多くの出版社に利用していただいています。
A lot of publishers are using now.
また、MIT の出版部門やシカゴ大学などアカデミックのお客様も重要だと考えています。
And I think academic publishers such as MIT and Chicago University are important as
well.
また、有料コンテンツの割合は?
And how about the ratio of pay contents?
Adler 氏:
Mr. Adler:

商業出版社の比率は正確には調べていないのですが、小規模なコンテンツプロバイダー
が圧倒的に多いので、それほど高くはないと思います。
I do not think the ratio of commercial publishers is not so high because there are a lot of
small-scale contents providers though it doesn't examine accurately.
有料コンテンツも 15%程度で、多くは無料コンテンツです。
Pay contents are about 15% and many of them are the free content.
Adler 氏:
Mr. Adler:
ただ、いつでも、どこでも、どんなデバイスからでも情報を共有できるということに意味
があると考えています。
However, I think it is meaningful to enable information to be shared from any device
anytime and anywhere.
これまで取材された記事が額に入れられて飾ってあった。

Do you have any plan for Japan?
日本語対応や日本での決済は可能ですか?
Is Japanese supported? and is the settlement from Japan possible?
Adler 氏:
Mr. Adler:
すでに 19 か国語に対応していて、日本語のコンテンツも扱うことができるはずです(編
集部注:実際には日本語環境では表示が崩れることがある)。
Japanese contents should be already able to be handled corresponding to 19 languages
(Editor‟s note: In some cases, displayed information collapses in a Japanese
environment).
ただ、今は米国で購入することを前提としており、他の国から決済することはできません。
However, it is required to buy contents in the United States now, and it is not possible to
settle them from other countries.
どの地域でビジネスをしたいかは、それぞれのパブリッシャーによると思うし、権利関係
の問題も存在します。

I think business territory would be depending on each publisher‟s intention and there
would be an issue regarding the copy rights.
まずは、米国市場をから始めて徐々に広げていきたいと考えています。
First of all, I want to start in the United States and extend the market gradually.
ビジネスモデルは広告がメイン
The main business model is the advertisement.

売上モデルや事業概況について教えて頂けますか?
How about the business model and the business outline?
Adler 氏:
Mr. Adler:
ビジネスモデルは広告が主です。
The main business model is the advertisement.
Scribd のコンテンツはテキスト形式が主なので、広告とのマッチングが非常によく、マネ
タイズしやすいのです。
It is easy to monetize contents because most of the Scribd‟s contents are text and those
suit well with a content matching advertisement.
一方のストアー(販売)売上はまだまだ小さい。
On the other hand, sales in the Store are still small.
現在のメンバーシップは無料ですが、将来はプレミアムサービスを開始しようと思ってい
ます。
We have a plan to start a premium service in the future though present membership is
free.

Scribd 社は未上場企業なので売上などの数値は公表していませんが、事業はとても順調
で、この第 2 四半期で黒字になりました。
We don‟t disclose the actual figure like sales amont because Scribd is not a publicly-held
company but our business is going very well and moved into the black in this second
quarter.
創業時に、約 13 億円のベンチャーファンドを受けているのですが、とてもユニークだと評
価されています。
Venture funds invested 1.3 billion yen into us when we started up because they
evaluated we are very unique.
「パブリッシャーと読者を直接結び付けたい」
We would like to connect publishers to readers directly.

ハーバード大卒とのことだが、気さくな感じでインタビューに答えてくれた。
He graduated from the Harvard University. He talked to us affably during the

今後の計画や抱負があれば、教えてください。
Can we ask your plan and ambition for the future?

これまでは出版流通などの仕組みがありましたが、デジタルデバイスを使った情報流通で
は、パブリッシャーと読者とを途中に誰も介在させないで直接に結び付けたいと考えてい
ます。
I want to connect publishers to readers directly, without any medium, in case of the
distribution of information on the digital devices though up to now, there was a
mechanism of the publication distribution.
読者が情報を買うということは、パブリッシャーと読者がお互いに結び付くということで、
すばらしいことだと思います。
I think it„s wonderful if readers buy information because it means that publishers and
readers are tied in mutually.
ただ、Web ベースでの情報流通は、一度パブリッシュするだけでどのようなデバイスでも
見ることができる、クロスメディアの可能性を示唆しています。
However, the Web base information distribution suggests the possibility of cross media
that enable readers to view contents on any device only if contents have been published
once.
これは、まだ誰も実現できていないのではないでしょうか。
No one might have achieved this yet.
