Announcing Expanded DPaaS Capabilities in

the Cloud and Increased Hardware
Effi ciencies with EMC Data Domain
Operating System 5.7
Software updates deliver superior data protection in the private and
hybrid cloud and new hardware keeps pace with explosive data
growth for continued leadership in the traditional data center

Overview
EMC continues to deliver on its promise to protect data wherever it lives by
introducing Data Domain Operating System (DD OS) 5.7, which includes features
and functionality that build upon its industry-leading protection storage in the
traditional data center and expanding its cloud offerings. So, enterprise and service
provider customers can deliver superior data protection as a service with Data
Domain in a private or hybrid cloud.
The highlights of the DD OS 5.7 announcement are:

Enhancing management, security and reliability, and scalability for Data

Protection as a Service (DPaaS) in a private or hybrid cloud

Physical capacity measurement: Enables chargeback as well as

capacity and migration planning by reporting on physical space consumed
on Data Domain systems at a file, directory, MTree, tenant, or tenant-unit
level

Secure multi-tenancy enhancements: Improved tenant management

and security with physical capacity measurement integration, quotas and
metering, tenant objects and network isolation

Scalability: Support up to 4x more tenants (MTrees) on mid-range and

high-end systems, plus 1.7x stream count increase for DD9500

Increased efficiency, lower TCO and non-disruptive migration for continuous

operations

DS60 dense shelf: New dense shelf enables lower TCO with up to 59%
reduction in floor space required

4 TB drive support: Gain 5% lower $/GB and 33% more capacity with
4TB drive support for ES30 and DS60 expansion shelves

Online shelf migration: Transfer data between shelves on a Data

Domain system without taking it offline

Data Domain Operating System availability labeling aligns to EMC best

practices

Data Domain Operating System (DD OS) 5.7

Enhanced Data Protection as a Service for Data Domain in the Cloud
DD OS 5.7 enables enterprise class cloud readiness for Data Domain systems being
deployed by large enterprises or service providers in a private or hybrid cloud. The
introduction of physical capacity measurement, plus updates to secure multitenancy and system scalability enable enterprises and service providers to deliver
superior data protection as a service in the areas of management, security &
reliability and scalability.
Physical Capacity Measurement:
This is a point in time measurement (based on when the measurement is requested)
of how much physical capacity is being consumed at a file, directory, MTree, tenant,
or tenant-unit level. To date, capacity measurements on the Data Domain system
focused on the overall logical system capacity or the representation of what is
protected overall as well as how much physical capacity on that system is required
to protect that, which shows the overall dedupe rate for the system. Now, with
physical capacity measurement, customers can see the physical capacity that
would be consumed on a Data Domain system on a more granular level. This
enables enterprise customers and service providers to manage shared Data Domain
protection storage capacity between individual departments or tenants.
Key use cases for physical capacity measurement:

Chargeback/Billing: charge tenants based on the capacity they have

consumed

Capacity Planning: determine how much capacity will be needed based on

current growth rate by tenant, MTree etc.

Data Migration Planning: identify the maximum capacity that a tenant will
consume if moved to another Data Domain system and identify assets that
deduplicate poorly

The Data Domain administrator can track and report on physical capacity
measurement through DD Management Center 1.4 or using CLI.
Secure Multi-tenancy Enhancements:
Secure multi-tenancy is a Data Domain feature that enables enterprises and service
providers to offer data protection as a service in a private or hybrid cloud
environment where Data Domain systems are shared by multiple customers or
business departments. Secure multi-tenancy enhancements include:

Management
o

Physical capacity measurement integration: Service providers

and enterprises can track actual capacity protected per tenant

(customer, application, or department) via DD Management Center 1.4

or CLI.

Quotas & metering: enables more efficient resource management by

tracking and setting limits on stream and capacity usage by tenant at
the destination Data Domain system for backup or replication.

Tenant objects: With Data Domain Management Center 1.4, the

creation of tenant objects allows service providers and enterprises to
group tenant units together, even across multiple Data Domain
systems. This provides the Data Domain admin with a comprehensive
view of each tenant in their environment.

Security
o

Replication security checks: Ensures no data is replicated across

tenants by having the replication protocol check that both the source
and destination MTrees are owned by the same tenant before
replication can proceed. If the source and destination MTrees are not
owned by the same tenant, then replication will fail.

Network isolation: Provides secure tenant administrative access by

specifying tenants IP addresses so that the Data Domain admin can
restrict data access based on these IPs. This enables self-service
reporting and status monitoring by tenant admin and tenant users.

Audi log enhancements: Enables servicer providers and enterprises

to do auditing at a tenant-level

Scalability
MTree Scaling: Increasing the number of active MTrees on mid-range and highend Data Domain systems enables the support of up to 4x more tenants on these
systems.

Increased Stream Count for DD9500: The number of streams supported on

DD9500 has been increased by 1.7x, which will benefit large scale customers that
are requiring more streams for larger workloads and a larger number of systems

New Shelf, Drives and Online Migration Increase Effi ciency and Lower
TCO
DS60 Dense Shelf: A new dense storage shelf has been designed to improve total
cost of ownership by maximizing capacity per rack to optimize floor space and

minimize disruptions in the data center. Specifically, the DS60 reduces the storage
footprint by up to 59% (compared to ES30 shelf). This dense shelf is available with
3TB or 4TB SAS drives and is supported with the DD4200, DD4500, DD7200 and
DD9500.
4 TB Drive Support: Available for the ES30 expansion shelf and the new DS60
dense shelf. 4TB drives offer a 5% lower $/GB than the 3TB drives and provide
power and cooling savings by delivering 33% more capacity in the same storage
footprint. 4TB drives are available for DD4500, DD7200 and DD9500 systems
running DD OS 5.7.
Online Shelf Migration: Data can now be migrated between shelves on a Data
Domain system without taking the system offline. Online shelf migration can be
done with minimal performance impact and without having to halt a backup that is
in progress. This will enable customers to consolidate data from older shelves to
newer shelves with more capacity in the same footprint, resulting in significantly
reduced storage requirements. This creates new opportunities to upsell additional
storage into to existing accounts.

DD OS Availability Labeling
Finally, starting with DD OS 5.7, EMC is aligning the software designation naming
convention of EMC Data Domain Operating System (DD OS) releases to be
consistent with other EMC products. DD OS releases will now be designated with a
General Availability label when they are first available to customers instead of
Directed Availability and will be using the EMC standard designation of Target
Revision instead of General Availability based on adoption metrics, defect levels
and other criteria. So going forward, customers that require the most mature code
level are encouraged to use the Target Revision release.
DD OS releases have always met EMCs GA standards at the time of the DD OS
release to DA. Per the table below, this re-label will simply create consistency across
EMC products.

This software release designation realignment has a number of benefits, including:

General Availability code labeling will be more consistent across EMC

products.

When launching new products, the initial software release will have a General
Availability designation. Therefore, software releases will be more readily
available for customers who require the General Availability designation.

Security patches will be immediately available for consumption instead of

waiting to reach the adoption criteria for GA.

The new drives and shelves will be available on Oct 15, 2015 in Direct Express and
Channel Express. EMC Sales must leverage Data Protection Solution Sales for
quoting and ordering; and engage them for all data protection opportunities. EMC
channel partners should leverage Channel Express or distribution partners for
quoting and ordering.
