General Course Information
The course is a biotechnology primer. It provides an overview to
molecular biotechnology as it relates to basic and applied research
studies in biomedical sciences as well as bioprocessing and
biomanufacturing practices utilized in the industry. Laboratory
techniques and technology applications that capitalize on many
attributes of biological molecules, cells and biological processes
are emphasized.
Topics are discussed in relation to pharmaceutical, agricultural and
environmental biotechnology applications. In addition, the course
provides an insight into transformation of laboratory‐based

products and service offerings in the industry.
Topics include biochemistry of biological molecules, molecular
separation techniques, chromatography, electrophoresis,
molecular interaction and cell‐based assays, nucleic acid
amplification, PCR and hybridization‐based methods, gene
libraries, genotyping, gene expression analysis, microarrays,
bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics and systems biology‐based
approaches.
If a student or an instructor disagrees about the nature of the absence
[i.e., for the purpose of observing a religious holy day] or if there is
similar disagreement about whether the student has been given a
reasonable time to complete any missed assignments or examinations,
either the student or the instructor may request a ruling from the
chief executive officer of the institution, or his or her designee. The
chief executive officer or designee must take into account the
legislative intent of TEC 51.911(b), and the student and instructor will
abide by the decision of the chief executive officer or designee.
